- The quickest way to make money in Football Manager is through transfer sales. Selling a player in FM is a fickle operation though, one that requires timing and comfort with how the transfer system works. I put myself to the test to see how much I could get for five different players on the spot, at the beginning of the FM transfer window.
I typically advise patience when selling but for the purpose of this video I pushed on to prove a point. Timing REALLY matters to sell high. Value seems to mean different things for different positions on the transfer market as well. Thanks, Football Manager for sharing a few more of your secrets. The Zealand investigations continue. Factors I consider consider when selling:
- Value fluctuates based on a variety of things such as: attributes, rep, age and potential , how long is left on their contract, the rep of the league they play in and whether they've just won a major trophy, etc.
- Values for most players are highest at the end of the season, especially if they've won a major trophy. They tend to drop after 1st July when the new season starts and the game recognises they have a year less on their contract. An exception to this is if you get promoted then their value will go up in July when the game recognises they play in a higher league, so consider waiting until July if selling players after a promotion.
- I also think about the buying club. Just because they're interested doesn't mean they have the money to buy him, so sell when clubs are at their richest. This is normally in May/June when they've just got their new budget for the coming season.
- Another good time to sell is if a club that's showing interest has just sold one of their players for serious money. This means they have a large wad of dosh burning a hole in their pocket. Take it off them - it would be rude not to!
- If a player has a lot of clubs after them I try to start a bidding war as Zealand did in this video.
Other tips:
- Loaning a player out , especially to a top league may increase his rep (especially if the club wins anything) and increase interest from other clubs in buying him.
- Having trouble selling a player? Try loaning him out as above. Consider adding a clause to buy him. This can be optional, mandatory or if he plays a set number of games. The down side is you can't add a clause to get a share of any profit of any future sale.
- Sometimes a player will attract no interest because:
i) He's signed a new contract within the last 6 months. Wait until the next transfer window and try again.
ii) He's on a high wage. Happens most often when you're at a major club like Man Utd, Real, etc. You may have to bite a bullet on this one and either sell low, offer to contribute some of his wage, loan him out or worst case let his contract expire.
- If you add clauses this can sometimes net you more money in the long run. Make sure they're ones the player is likely to meet. e.g. plays a set number of games, international caps, goals scored for strikers. You can do the reverse when buying players by offering clauses they're unlikely to meet or that your club can negotiate a buy out of.
N.B. The editor is a good learning tool for stuff like this as you can see more of how the game works. e.g. you can see the players rep, or how big a transfer budget interested clubs have and what proportion of that they're prepared to spend on one player, etc.
Using this in a serious save might be considered a cheat as you have more info than in the base game even if you don't actually change anything, but that's personal choice. I strongly recommend having a play on the editor to learn more about the game mechanics though. Consider having a second save you can use to experiment, try things out and generally play about with to learn game mechanics.

A good tip for if you’ve just signed the player and wants to sell him is to demote him to the u19 team. They’ll accept pretty much any offer and bids will come in.
I do this a lot when I get big offers from China too since players usually don’t want to leave unless pushed.

Best transfer tips for FM
For players not getting interest / high enough bids, tick the box to add them to transfer list and they pretty much always get bids. Often higher than when they weren't listed.
And for players not selling for over £1.5m you can pretty much loan ANY player for a fee of £150k per month (£1.5m per year) with 100% wages paid by their club which can harvest so much money over the length of a contract (which they are often willing to extend cheaply)

One thing that I've noticed about offering players to clubs: For some reason I find that if I offer them one at a time, and wait until I hear back about the offer from other clubs before I offer other players, I tend to get a lot more offers. This doesn't necessarily do much to push up the value for transfers, but I usually get much better loans by offering them one at a time instead of offering multiple players in the same day.
You'll struggle to sell because you're a team with a low coefficient ranking in a league with the same issue. Players valuation will be lower as the clubs league and general rep is lower, also when selling players, put them on the transfer list, mark/tick them as available and depending on age you can also mark them on the loan list as that generates further interest. The coefficient issue can't really be solved unless a huge club comes in for one of your players, that seems to trigger other clubs, they sort of recognise he's a better player than it seems and bids and interest then increase. Goalkeepers will, for some reason, always go for way less than their actual value, I often have low ball bids, even for up and coming high end youngsters.

@@Roscododger Keep in mind that sometimes this means that you won't be able to sell the player as they will reject the contract with the new club. So it is a bit of a risk/reward thing.
I do the same but sometimes still get offers including a wage contribution. it's wise to sometimes accept it though if the transfer fee is higher than those not asking for a wage contribution.

In my exp transfer windows also play a major role. Selling player in first transfer window will get more bids and better price because at this time clubs have better transfer budget and are building their team. I sort out my team on first transfer window, I use second window just to loan players that get less playing time, signing youth players or getting the very best deal for a player like when he is transfer listed.

Hey Zealand, I'd have another idea for a whole bunch of videos: You could show how your perfect player for a certain position/role/duty would look like, but you have two conditions: a) each attribute has 10 points to start with. you can shift attributes around, but for every point that you put into one of them, another one needs to go down. b) you can pick at most 3 traits for the player.
It becomes even more interesting if you'd let other streamers like Benji do the same and compare if you came up with something similar.
I'd love to see how your different roles for the same position would look like. Poacher vs Advanced Forward, DLP versus Mezzala. What do you think?

Have you got any advice on how to sell/offload highly influential players without disrupting the squad too much?
In my previous FM around 2009 i spent almost 10 seasons building port vale to near invincible status. Along the way always faced the situation of selling a wonderkid because of a ridiculously good deal.
EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THOSE FUCKERS SCORED AGAINST ME
One thing you didnt mention is the right time to sell. After winning cups, especially unexpected cup wins, if your player wins stuff for his national team or if your player is massively on form his value will spike for a short amount of time. So sometimes it´s worth it to offer out players before the start of the next season because they still have the extra value from their recent achievements, that value might be gone once the next transfer window rolls out. I just managed to get 53m € for Ellyes Shkiri and 58m € for Jhon Cordoba after an upset DFB Pokal win and second place League finish with Cordoba winning the Bundesliga "Torjägerkanone".
This info is absolute gold.... managed to get 750k for my GK worth 17.5k! Amazing!

This never happens in my games, when i offer out 30m+ players for unspecified i just get silly non negotiable offers for 0 from rival prem clubs like liverpool, chelsea, city and united.

Anything you recommend for a good save? I've always done a Borussia Dortmund save every year, but once you dethrone Bayern and win or contend for the CL every year it starts to get stale. Been looking for a new challenge. Considered MLS being American as well, but I hear you can exploit the AI pretty hard with the MLS rules.

7:55 If you keep rejecting offers, the player becomes unsettled.. at this point you can't promise him that he'll be sold at a certain price because the players won't accept a pricetag that is too greater than his value. you basically have to tell him to suck it which lowers his morale, and you sort of have to make sure he's sold in the same window or risk him being unhappy for the next few months.

How do you handle rotating players that are fringe/not good enough to be true first team players so that you don't squander their value. Part of it was probably my being too sentimental with guys that got me promoted/won our first league title but I've had several guys with mid-teens valuations keep getting low offers while playing and during the summer and eventually leave on a free with low value after falling out of the squad.
Does this still work? I tried everything Zealand did, but it’s not working. In my save as Brøndby In Denmark. I got an offer for one of my players. Initially he is worth 3 million, but he had a fantastic season. The bid was around 6 million euros, so in order to generate more attention and offers i rejected the bid and offered him out unspecified. 20 bids came in, including from the club i rejected. All bids at 3 million. I then rejected them all and offered him out again asking for 4 million and all of a sudden there were no offers - am i doing something wrong?

I am at Kidderminster at Vanarama National League, promoted first last year from North. I have many players who I want to sell because the club is going slowly bankrupt because lower leagues has no proper income and players asking for even 500 bucks weekly is considered a luxury. So far, no luck as teams either come with %0 loan offers or just wait until the contracts expire and try to get my guys for free >_>

I sign a lot of wonderkids at my B team’s level in portugal but i often want to train them with my first team and often switch their positions. I reserve them for the B team but i think only 3 can play for the B team at a time? How do i set up staff when there is no board requirements for the number of staff? Thanks

Does the work permit disable/unlock trick work in FM 2020 like in prev versions? I was told that in FM 2019 if you signed 15-20 international players who required work permits, you got an Achievement notification and work permits were no longer reqd. going fwd. Has anyone tried that in FM 2020?
in FM21 I sold Sadio Mane to PSG after 1 season, their initial offer was £113 million, they don't seem to get offended like every other club when you come back with ridiculous counter offers which I did of £200 million. We negotiated and settled on £177 million. An aging Sadio Mane single handedly funded Haaland and Odegaard, I also picked up Camavinga with my normal transfer budget and began a very powerful rebuild.
So i just got Lecce promoted on a journeyman save and i am trying to clear out the dead wood who wont make it in Seria A so i can bring in some quality. All decent players, 0 interest. How do i make people purchase my unwanted players?
Z-man pls use a Limiter on your audio track or something, the audio varies too much volume between sections!
Not sure if this is still valid but it used to be. Don't offer more then one player out for sale per day. This will generate more interest as the other clubs are not overwhelmed with messages. When taking over a club and clearing out a lot you can offer out multiple low value ones but save the big ones per day.

Ok i have told this before ... but if you're struggling to sell a player .. and he got more than a year on his contract .. loan him to a club with good finance .. and near at the end of his loan you can sell him at least for a double of his value .. I sold bremer to a german club for 40 Mill and when he joined there he was valued at 20 and was a red ones in the recommendation for the team . I also sold Kramaric when he was valued at 13.5 for 30 mill to Norwich when he was 31 .. it's amazing how most of these players will be bid for by that club and for so much money
How do you sell player I have a player, Andrija Zivkovic in Red Star his value is 4 mil and I can't sell him for 15 m, you manage to sell you the player for 90 m. I open more than one league and still nothing from big clubs, he is really good.
FM 19, 3rd season with Real Madrid i want to sell Benzema because he is homesick but no one is ready to buy him. Benfica and Sporting CP who want me to pay 150K p/w wages and are only paying 11.5M euros max. Juve and I agreed a 8M+Benzema deal for CR7 and i accepted Portuguese offers as well but he rejected them all. I didnt registered him for my squad, made him angry, he just wants to leave now 1. no one wants him and 2. even if someone wants him he rejects them. What should i do??? Anyone?

I was managing in the Norwegian League and got my team to back to back europa league finals. My highest valued players was only at about 2-3 million euros and I struggled to get clubs to pay more than 20 million for my star players, but when I left the club to manage Lazio I tried to sign some of my old stars and noticed their values had gone up to 20-30 and even 40 million in some cases. I went in for my old star striker who was now worth 20 times more than he was before and the club demanded 80 million for him. A weird and annoying quirk of the game

Transfer values are related to reputation?
I'm so bad at selling players. I always want to give them more time and I find it hard to be ruthless, putting a lot of value on a player who is already settled and used to playing within the team (whereas a replacement will take time to settle in). Anyone have any tips on when the right time to sell is, particularly with players you have developed and you still hope will improve.... I have a 22 and 25 year old, with city and barca interested
I always go as when a team is interested, then I line up a replacement (or think about who to bring in)
I then consider how much it would cost me to replace them (similarly), and use that as a base for my negotiation
You can inflate it if the team is rich (China teams / PSG / ManCity turns that 30m into 45m)
But then it also depends on what you see the player as too - the boyhood supporter might be more difficult to shift (as well as more sentimental), than some guy you bought in 2 years ago from XYZ club
And then throw in the club's league restrictions too - a harsh Brexit means that foreign players are likely to be a premium, so can inflate the fee (see Russian teams for an extreme example - they pay megabucks for Russians due to their league restrictions)
Plus consider what leagues are loaded too - it's a LOT harder to offload to a club which isn't playing games (it's why a 35yo has-been can trot out for a biggish non-loaded club in the CL, because they generally don't bother updating their squad too much)
As Zee kind of indicated here though, other teams being interested is the key... he drove the prices up because there was a lot of interest, rather than "accept whatever" when only 1 team was interested
edit: my best story is turning a freebie into an 8m player (this was back in FM12), just by loaning him out a couple of times
and my worst is "getting the money back" on a guy that eventually turned out to play for ManCity and contend for the BallonD'or (signed from Brazil and shipped to America for what I paid for) - two years later he went to Valencia and tore up trees, before a game-high fee to ManCity (yep... it still haunts me)
Guys im offering players who have 4 star potential and currently 3 stars and value around 44 but im only getting bids of 9 mil. How do i sell them for higher prices, im sure i dont want them anymore

For some reason it seems to be harder to sell or loan out goalkeepers compared to other position unless they are outstanding players
GKs are always underrated by the AI they often are half a star or so lower than they should be. This probably is because of their low match ratings in general
Had a question regarding Reserve teams: What do they do, sometimes after a period of 1 year in the u19’s after great training and growth, players may not be able to make the jump to Ligue 2, so I utilize my Reserve squad as they play in the National 2A level, however after a short period of playing in this squad Potential Star Rating seems to drop drastically, I know this is long winded but I would love if you could address this
This means their potential ability is not as good as your scouts once thought before he played in any games but after they’ve seen him then his PA stars get adjusted this usually happens at the end of each month.
Zealand, I have a question: I am managing river plate, and the values of the players are quite low, compared to the value they have irl, and that they have good CA. Why does this happen and how can I change it? (same happens to all the other south american players, at south american clubs. and i think in your Bate squad). Its annoying because I cant sell players for realistic prices
The players have low reputation. Even if they have good CA, the reputation highly influences how much a player will sell for

Don't you ever use Additional Fees? The last FM I played was FM16 and you could negotiate better deals with them. For example, maybe a club would only pay £20m max but I wanted £30m. I would then lower the initial fee to maybe £10m but then ask for £20m over 12 months. Sometimes you could squeeze in a cheeky 20% sell on fee too.
For the low value players that you think are worth a bit more (or maybe have a bit of potential), but teams don't seem interested or only want to pay £250k or something; sometimes it can be best just to offer them for £0, but with a 50% sell on. Sure, you don't get any money but you do get them off your wage bill quickly. Then if they are sold, you can end up with £1m-£5m.
If you manage low reputation teams, throw in Arrange Friendly. If I remember correctly, you can get a nice £200k-£500k from high rep teams.

Yes you should. It also takes recent form and achievements into account, so if you for example just won League 1 and your Striker got Top Goalscorer in the League you have a guy in Top form, with recent achievements and with increased reputation due to league. Stuff like this or suprise cup wins can really boost your players Value for a short amount of time, so allways sell your big players after overachieving massively.

You can't tout your players repeatedly when they did not want to leave also you can't increase the price after your first offer out. The player will be unhappy immediately.

As far as making a profit, how do you see what the club originally bought the player for?
Go to the player's profile and click on the history tab. It should have the transfer fees paid for them next to the club names.

Last time in my save with semi-pro club from NIr i offered my 17 yo striker (cost 2.8K euros) just to see wether or not the price from his transfer will improve my finances and what this price will be. I've got instant 60k euro offer from some League Two club and you know what? My board locked this transfer and accepted it. While i expected smth like 250k and didnt even consider price below that.
Well folks...that's how i lost my top goalscorer (34 goals in 38 matches). Fail of the month for me.
