    In this video I give you a very brief 10 min review of the Mk8 Golf R considering its benefits over the Mk8 Golf R hatchback and its value for money.
    I didn't mention that the Golf Estate has 50mm more between the wheels (wheelbase) than the hatch which may equate to more room for rear seat passengers. I didn't mention it because VW's media technical info document only lists width, height, length.
    Additional optional equipment on this vehicle:
    - Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) - variable suspension settings with choice of modes. Individual mode allows fine-tuning of the dampers with 15 different settings (£840)
    - rear-view camera (£310)
    - alternative alloy wheels - four 8J x 19-inch 'Estoril Black' with 235/35 R19 with anti-theft wheel bolts (£880)
    - panoramic sunroof - electric, glass sliding/tilting including integrated roller blind (£1,165)
    - winter pack - heated front seats, heated washer jets and low washer fluid light (£300)
    - side airbags - side airbag system for front and rear seat passengers (£360)
    - Harman Kardon sound system - 9 speakers, 12 channel amplifier, subwoofer and 480W total output (£660)
    Retailer fitted Vodafone S5-VTS GPS Tracker - including 1 year subscription (£540.19 incl. fitting)
    Colour and trim: Lapiz Blue (£825) with Black ‘Sardegna’ cloth upholstery;
    Price as tested: £50,415.19

      I had a Golf R mk7 - great car. So much so that I logically looked at the mk8 R. Didn’t like it at all. Interior did nothing for me and the lack of buttons etc plus the media infotainment system seems to be problematic. In the end, I bought a fully loaded M440i which was £65k new with only 4000 miles on it for the same money as the Golf. I much prefer the looks of the 440 plus the brilliant B58 straight six engine - which does 49mpg on a run and appears to have more power than BMW claim……quite a bit more as it happens……😈😂

      Purchased a used 7.5 estate and deliberately chose a lower spec to avoid too many extra motors or electronics having had bad experiences with all this stuff causing problems with other VW group cars.
      The 7.5 is a compact estate that’s possible to find parking spaces for and personally I like the looks and the very upright back window.
      I found a powered tail gate mainly to be a pain in the A@@ and a big battery drainer when repeatedly using plus lots irritating beeping noises which in the confines of a city isn’t great if one wants to load and unload stealthily.
      Is that beeping in the video because the sunroof is opening or notifying the fault.

    I know cars are getting more expensive but £50k is too optimistic for this. I’m a huge fan of Golfs, and fast estates in general so I should be all over this but it just leaves me feeling completely cold. Massively reduced interior quality versus the 7.5, terrible touch screen, awful VW customer care, electronic and software glitches galore, no powered tailgate (hygiene factor at this price point) and despite some dynamic gains it doesn’t move the game on significantly from the 7.5. And like all Golf Estates, it’s a munter. Ahm‘ oot!

    Interesting vehicle. I have been driving VWs since 1973, gtis and my Corrado from 83-2017, and a golf sportwagen/estate since 2017. VW doesn't sell sportwagens in the US anymore. But I would love a car like this if it came with a manual transmission.

      @@volkswizard I know. We like fuel efficient station wagons with manual transmissions, not SUV boxes with automatics. We had a 2009 Jetta Sportwagen and now have a 2015 Golf Sportwagen, a 2017 Alltrack, and my 1992 Corrado SLC. Unfortunately, VW has written off the US and 49 year dedicated customers like myself. We aren't getting any more station wagons and they will stop sending us manuals in 2 to 3 years. After nearly 5 decades of VWs, its over for me.

  • @andrewmcivor42
    @andrewmcivor42 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    A review I've been waiting for you to do for ages! I've always thought the Golf R made more sense as an estate than as a hatch - but I'm biased as I've got a 7.5 R Estate (if I'd wanted a hatch, I'd have probably bought a GTi PP).
    Noticed there was no space saver spare - cheapskates.... I got a space saver & full kit with the 7.5!
    Would I trade my R Estate for the Mk8 version? Not a chance! That Mk8 is specced pretty similarly to mine (Lapiz blue, DCC, 19" wheels, pan roof, premium audio) & I paid nothing like £50k - not even £40k for my 20 plate car (although I did get a good deal, as it was a "pre built" one, to be fair). I was only about £60 per month more than for my old Mk 7 GTD (& that was only about £27k). The options came out at just under £4k, so wondering what else that Mk8 has on it to take it to £6k of options?
    The styling? No, I don't particularly like the back of it - a Golf should be as practical as possible, that's the whole point. That swoopy rear end looks a bit "contrived" (reminds me of the Mk6 estate) - it suits something like the Arteon shooting brake, but not a Golf. I like the "boxiness" of the 7/7.5, it says "you CAN have performance as well as the practically of an estate" - for the person that can't justify a separate "weekend" car. I don't think the luggage space is any less than the 7/7.5 though.
    The black wheels look "wrong" too, agree with you on that. The Spielbergs I have on mine are decent (even if they aren't as smart as the Brescia 19"s that were a GTi option wheel), match better with the silver trim.
    Not a fan of the seats either - light coloured seats are not particularly practical (especially if you have a dog) & the blue trim looks tacky. Not a fan of the integrated headrests, but that's a personal thing (harder to clip on a hammock cover for the back seats, to stop them getting covered in drool & dog hair 🤣).
    I can vouch for the capacity of the estate though - managed to get 2 desks & a large storage unit into it from IKEA! It's also had a fridge freezer in the back...
    For the sort of cash that VW are looking for for a well specced Golf R Estate, I'd probably just push the boat out & get an Arteon R Shooting brake instead, as I tend to use mine for everyday driving & some long distance runs too.
    One final point: I do laugh at how the styling of the premium audio is a "thing" - I really couldn't care less what it looked like (the chrome tweeter surrounds are handy if you're looking at used Golfs online though, at least you can tell if it's fitted!), but the door cards really aren't an issue for me. I wonder if the Harmon Kardon system is as good as the Dynaudio (which is excellent, for a manufacturer system - makes such a difference & I wouldn't be without it)? I also think it works better in the estate than the hatch (I had it in both my Golfs), probably due to the greater interior space).
    Excellent review though - helped me make up my mind once & for all to buy my current Golf at the end of the PCP, rather than trade!

      The Skoda Superb Estate Sportline I drove in late 2021 had the worst chassis I've ever driven of a modern car so needs some upgrades for sure! The biggest problem I had was traffic sign recognition controlling the cruise control. I switched this off in the end after it sent me to 80mph in a 50mph average speed zone. Now the car annoys me a lot less. Just worrying this new R Estate presumably with latest software logged parking sensor faults on start which my GTI did on the day I collected it 14 months ago. How disrespectful, off the back of the hatchback golf r you say similar to the r-line!! There is also no sense in why you'd have a gti over an R. I think you must secretly like the R cos no man woman or child would have a gti over the R & very few would have the estate R. What's your thought on the 20 edition? Don't tell me you'd rather have an R-Line🙊

      Covered this so many times before but R has very little on GTI apart from in a straight line drag race. After that all that weight penalty slows it down especially in the dry.
