This video is a full 30 min review of the very rare Mk8 VW Golf Black Edition with 2.0 TSI engine and 4motion all wheel drive which joined the range as an afterthought in September 2023.
There is a Golf R 333 which is not available in the UK, not sure on numbers of the Black Edition but I bet there are fewer 2.0 TSI 190 4motions with DCC than there are R 333s ;)
This is the last review of the last non-GTI Mk8 Golf on VW's press fleet so it marks the end of the Mk8-point-zero era, which has been brilliant to share with you guys, from my first review of a Style back in 2020 to this car, with all the ups and down of my Mk8 Clubsport ownership in between. I need your support to encourage VW UK to invite me to Golf 8 events, so please say if you want me to via the comments, thanks!

Really annoys me when they use the R badging on none R golfs.
Isn’t the “R” a line though and not specific to golf R? Like polos with strimmer engines in but have R line badges
@@conorf8091 No! A golf R is what it is a Golf R. You aint getting the RS line with Audi, a RS is a RS.
@@conorf8091
R is Volkswagen’s performance division. The R Line is simply a styling pack. It’s the top of the line trim for the non-performance Golf.
It’s the same with S Line, M Sport, AMG Line, etc.
@@conorf8091
It’s essentially getting the looks of the performance variants in an affordable package. But the Mk8 R Line doesn’t look much like the R to me. More like the GTD, GTI and GTE, in terms of front grill shape.
The Mk7.5 Golf R Line looked a lot more like the Golf R. Only difference was the R Line had honeycomb grille, whereas the R had slats. R Line obviously had R Line logo and didn’t come with LED lights as standard. And from the rear, the R Line has fake exhaust tips, whereas the R has quad exhaust pipes, two on each side. And they’re real. 😊
Boo hoo
Have had my GTI 8 for almost 2 yrs now, alot of hate for them over the internet, but unless you own one, only then will you understand how dynamically well they drive, especially now that i have just put a set of Bridgestone Potenza Sports on it replacing the terrible Hankook ones
Definitely the best handling GTI i have ever owned
The Bridgestones will always improve handling Potentzial.
Exactly! Having a fair amount of experience across all brands of tyres on all my vehicles i choose Bridgestones all day everyday, their sidewalls are unique for performance orientation@jamesead9095
My wife has had this running gear in her T roc for 5 years, she likes it. Does this use the gen B engine that uses the Budack (Miller) cycle for valve opening and closing ? It's the econo version of the EA888. Runs out of turbo early though and pointless holding on to gears. I can't see a MAF sensor on this though, so it may just be a detuned EA888.
I bought a used GTi about 6 months ago (love it btw) and these were just coming onto the market. I fancied testing a 2.0 tsi one, but only found about 3 for sale in the country and all had the smaller engine
Those new engine covers were fitted earlier this year on cars that had the old one removed
My polo gti engine has a nicer tsi lid
What a nice golf,it doesn't need the R to make it better ❤
The R makes it worse, wouldn’t drive a car pretending to be something it’s not
I've really warmed to the mk8 now. I'd buy one
I’m a few months away from purchasing. I’m interested in a 7.5 performance pack or R. I’d need to check insurance cost on the R.
Do you still sell cars? If not is there anywhere you’d recommend to purchase one? I’ve got a polo worth between 8 and 9 k. I think I have about 4 k in savings with a few months around September have another 3 to 4 k saved. If there’s any recommendations it would be greatly appreciated
Would of made a decent estate as they have no interesting wagons anymore unless your spending £40k+
That is a good point Karl! Maybe it exists in Europe somewhere as they love estates. I can imagine it being a Swiss spec.
38k for a run of the mill Golf. Who’s buying that really?
Seems to me it’s a parts bin special or maybe VW are testing the water for the MK8.5
Parts bin special how?
Great review Andrew - this drivetrain used in A3 40 TFSI in Oz along with 1.5 in A35 - I’d be ,ore interested if more bhp as 140kw from a 2.0 turbo engine in 2024 is underwhelming and not sure 320nm of torque compensates when GTI has 370nm however AWD is the big gain here especially on slippery winter roads
Interested in this review specifically because my formentor is a 190 4WD set up, and most Formentor reviews are 150 or the 310. Would be good to learn more about what the E888 190 engine is in relation to its more powerful offerings.
I think the DNN engine could well be the GTI 245 engine with different software. The EA888s with higher output will all be a different version with bigger turbo and uprated internals. You’ll enjoy your Formentor 👍
Black is much better
Hi Andrew. Followed the Mk8 highs and lows same time you had your CS. You guided me through its "foibles" but it's still a great drive, to me anyway. Yup, shame about the IT etc but the Mk8.5 is like mine but a bigger interface screen sans gremlins.Well, at almost 50K not for me.
This model really did have a quiet unveiling when it could have had more of a press launch. Looks a great all round car for the masses, call it the people car if you will 😬. I only wish they would badge the cars as R Line.
Great video again Andrew! 👌, this model does rather intrigue me tbh!
FYI, the product code for the front discs on the 245 GTI is [ 1LG ] these have a diameter of 340mm, not 312mm. 🙂
kinda surprised they allow you to put it up on a ramp, what if you damaged it?
Kinda surprised they allow people to test drive cars, what if you crash it?
I bought a Golf 8 1.5 TSi recently (my 4th Golf in total) and I would love to get my hands on this Black edition! It looks beautiful! One to look out for 4 sure! ❤❤❤
Wish they put this powertrain in the mk7.5 like the same gen A3, would have jumped on one as soon as. Hopefully they'll do this for the Mk8.5
Wish they didn’t stop making the manuals
It's a crying shame really. VW does a great manual in the non- performance model golfs
Nearly £40k😂😂. Seriously?
You can spend that on a Corolla now.
@polopowered Possibly. But prices for the Corolla start at £29,500. For £40k that's going to be a top specced bells and whistles car. Not a base spec with primer paint, no scuff plates, cloth seats, Golf with a few badges stuck on!!
@@iantaylor620 true, I do agree that VAG Group pricing is bonkers, but people will pay it. Goodness knows why?! I'll stick with my Corolla Touring!
I have the rline in same colour prefer the diamond cut wheels. All black look like had a cheap refurb, great vid and statement best golf ever.
Great video Andrew.👍
Hopefully the price does fall
My parents had almost a full spec one on order, AWD, 190ps, Pano, winter, etc.
There own words were "We bought the GTD because it was the same spec but had the IQ headlights, it's a shame the option wasn't there for this model".
It's amazing that VW havent allowed this option on more model as in today's world of "headlight wars" that manufactures seem to be pushing, a lot of people take this into consideration.
They did test the car and said it drove really smoothly and was quite fun, although they are used to the engine and gearbox from there Tiguan R Line Tech with the same running gear.
Effectively this is an Audi A3 2.0 Quattro 8V.
😂 26:21 go on son🤣🤣
What a great car ! Would be the perfect upgrade from my Golf 8 1.5 eTSI with DCC. Best option I ticked, along with iQ light. The 1.5 has plenty of liveliness but doesn’t like higher rpms.
Cheers, Tom
Crazy how much really obvious cost cutting has been applied to the back seating area! Almost seems like a different trim level in the back compared to the front. Saying that I’m still not keen on the front area or the mk8 in general.
Great comprehensive video again. Look forward to you getting your hands on a 8.5
Great review as always..
Northamptonshire roads are the worst! The car fills the performance gap nicely between 150 ps r line and gti
In haldex 6gen,like in this video and audi s3 8y etc, there is no ECU module.Haldex pump its ecu control unit.
Good review, looks as if it’s a “best” all rounder Golf. They still sell Golfs by the bucket load, although maybe a year old S3 might be a sweeter spot.
Ahh but that A3/S3/RS3 interior is 🤢
I think Australia gets the Mk8.5 next year. But supply will be a factor and price also. Mk8 still fetching over $63k, if you could find one. And I don't want to. I like the moonstone grey. But actually purchasing one. No thanks.
Shame these were not produced for mk7 and 7.5 like Audi did with the A3 8V Quattro. Nice stealth alternative to an S3
It’s not a performance car. How can it be stealth. Just get a GTI Club sport or R you’d be very disappointment if you bought that thinking it was a Golf R or S3.
Was waiting for someone to review this. Good Job!
Thanks! Pistonheads did a review which unlike some I don’t recycle the sentiment from, my own opinion was that it was a great real world drive
8:57 That exhaust looks awful. Look better with gtd twin exhaust
Got the black pack on my 24 T-Roc R line and that too has the fake exhausts in black rather than chrome….thankfully
Lovely that like, be a bargain in a few years time once the prices settle
looks like it arrived at VW Tunbridge Wells.. (just under £39k)
Looks really basic.. Rather have my GTD 7.5 ❤
A great review of a Golf model that I never knew existed. What lovely well rounded package this car is 😍
Rare? It’s a Boggo golf with no real appeal whatsoever
Vw needs to stop with all this electric nonsense and get back to making powerful petrol cars that sound nice
No chance of that unfortunately, it's milk floats all the way from here on 😢
🤞🙏
Awd is rare
I havent got time for fake versions of fast cars
They are all it, we even had a look a like version of the Mk1 GOLF GTI called Driver. Big difference now is these fake versions are still actually fast cars
@volkswizard but the Driver never had a fake GTI badge. And all cars were slow in those days, unless it was called a Countach or a Super 7.
@@volkswizard actually, why haven't they revived the "Driver" badge... that would be much better than fake Rs
its strange how VW could make the m8 so damn ugly, im sure it drives good but that damn look on that car just make me think... hell nooo
VW should have made the UP! R.
36k 4 a 1.5tsi 😂😂😂bag of shite just buy the full fat golf r not the wanna be 4 simlar price
It's a VW, so it's tedious, unreliable shite. That's all you need to know. 😂
Great comprehensive video again. Look forward to you getting your hands on a 8.5
