    David Phreak Turley is one of the most interesting people in lolesports. One of the most veteran members of Riot Games, Phreak is quite possibly the oldest caster still active in League today. League of Legends Esports wouldn't be the same without him, so let's take a look at his progression over the years!

    Phreak is actually one of my favorite people, and a large role-model.
    What's even more amazing is that I can guarantee that he doesn't realize how many people look up to him as someone that they genuinely respect, and want to become more like.
    Phreak is like the grandfather that you always want to hang out with and listen to all their stories. He's smart, well spoken, and respectful.
    I love Phreak. Seriously.

    As someone who casts Super Smash Bros. Melee, I feel you often _need_ to be able to swap between color and play-by-play on the fly, since that game is paced so quickly without a ton of time to breathe/analyze specific situations. It's refreshing to see someone like Phreak who really can fill for either role rather effortlessly, and it's a huge inspiration for how I approach my own commentary. He truly is such a unique and talented caster, and it was so cool to see him form into his own over these few clips. Thanks for the content Gbay!

  • @ferryferry4784
    @ferryferry4784 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    First of all, thank you Gbay! I love your info-gaining videos, they are just amazing. The topics are just the best.
    2ndly, thank you that you point on Phreak! I liked him since the start of LoL. He is the most friendly guy that looks so humble and good-heartish. I am so happy that he got his place where he can be so confident, because he looks like he deserve it.
    And as the last point i would say that his carrier was fortunate also with so many coincidance. I personaly think that the E-Sport polularity raised in around the time as Riot and LoL started, the Twitch started and i think became the most popular e-gaming and e-sport streaming service on the world. That made PvP games start to invest into e-sport content ans production, which at first could also allow hire gaming specialist that liked to improve themselves. And one of them was Phreak. Accepted a new advanture that was not in gaming "neccessery" before. I believe that his knowleadge is not ony advance in comantary, but also in production.
    And about Phreak, now when i see him on the screen, i just feel like i see a friend that i know for several years, confident, knowing that he is well, just makes me feel safe, even i felt the struggle in life. This is something that i might felt only with my own friends and family. Actually when i lately saw a lcs (which is today so rarely), I was more happy to see him than the games. He is nowadays not only a caster, but also a friend to so many people that he might not ever know.
    I just wish him the best of all from my heart. And also to you Gbay, thank you that you made this for Phreak, the best honour that you just could do to the person.

    Your comment on the ability to swap between play-by-play and color commentary got me thinking on how that relates to the fgc. I’d say Sajam is probably on that level with how much he’s done. But the sheer amount of things that happen in a moba compared to any fighting game just puts Phreak on another level.

    19:50 Kixtar in rainbow six is a similar story to Phreak. He was a pro in season 1 and became a caster. He is also a big proponent of both casters of any given match sharing play by play and colour commentary. Partnered with another good hybrid caster the conversation bounces off each other in a perfect natural flow.

  • @ItsSvetsi
    @ItsSvetsi 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think the key quality of a play by play commentator when focusing on engaging the audience is dynamics. Not just having regular and excited modes, but rather a solid linear range of excitement that's able to express the real feeling of a situation. When you only have 0 and 100 those actual moments of true excitement are diminished.

    although I agree with all of this. I think a big part of this is 10 years ago esports wasn't anywhere near as big in western culture and so it seems awkward and forced to 'act' like that. Where its a huge deal now, and phreak is around his friends (fellow casters) so you would also feel more confident. Where for the new casters its easier to do this because everyone else around you 'acts' at that level now so you just copy them now and fit in. This is what I've learnt from being a teacher and learning to find my own 'voice' as such.

    Hi Gbay, great video, quality content as usual. It would have been great to include maybe some of the perks that are unique to Phreak and make him awesome - phrases that became historic in the community (this is peak League of Legends and it comes from Europe, or "Quaaadrakill for Huni" etc, i am sure there are more) since most people focus on the puns he is now famous for, his charisma and synergy with other casters (like the Dr Seuss bit with Kobe for ex.) and the exquisite borderline flame he sometimes does when he criticizes a play during his commentary, haha. Kind of like Sjokz trolling players in interviews, and how he can get away with it because of his tenure and probably having good relationships with the players by now.
    I will never forget how an entire stadium during the Worlds in Europe chanted his name just because he had come on stage shortly before going live :) he is a legend!
    Thank you for all the hard work and time you put into these!

  • @benverzijlbergen2968
    @benverzijlbergen2968 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Interesting. While I do hear how he can convey the information more clearly nowadays, I do think he sounded more excited in his early days. I don't think the higher pitch was an act - I think he actually got excited!
    But then again, I haven't spent as much time watching his casts as you have, so you'd probably know best. I enjoyed that piece. Maybe you could try to get an interview with him about his carreer as a shoutcaster at some point? I'd love to see that.

  • @Mirro18
    @Mirro18 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Also a thing that needs to be adressed cause he did not really say it like that: Every struggle, every difficulty, every bump of the road can turn around and become your blessing. Phreak had to do twice the work and now he has a unique skillset in casting. So each time you struggle a few years down the line you might look at what you are doing and you will be glad that you struggled with something. Not because it wasn't awful or something, but because what you do today is a sign of your triumph versus adversity...
    In other words, the story of Phreak and many others is a story as old as video games. If you are going in a direction and things start becoming more difficult, you are going in the right direction.

    O.k. First of all I really like your content, I'm an older guy and I probably would have never been exposed to League without the pandemic,so I've recently,last 2 years gotten familiar with the casters, I didn't know Phreak was a company man with RIOT, but as far as casting goes I'll take Cpt. Flowers any day, Phreak seems to make Azael feel really uncomfortable calling them the whatever DUO, but I've got to suck it up,I doubt he's going anywhere,keep up the good work Gbay99

    You didn't talk about the puns. And also, one of the reasons they kept him on, even though his casting was subpar for a long time, is because he did loads of other stuff for league as well.
    He's a great ambassador for league in general.
    Honestly, most casters were better than him for the longest t ime, but now he really shines at play by play, imo.
