In order to build fast twitch muscle fibers, you have to develop exercise in short bursts. Using alternate picking on random repetitions is a great way to do this while working to develop alternate picking technique capable of cloning the downpick sound. When you master this, then you are Master!

Ya know, Mozarts father had him compose music out of the best parts of well known pieces of the day. Interesting thought, I would call it an upscale medley. Here's a thought, look at bombastic outros. Malmsteen is great at that, haven't since noticed what metalcore bands and the like have bombastic outros yet. But the bands best at composing would put effort into song endings, a part often overlooked and inspired as a part of backchaining method learned, which means learning a songs ending first. Just a thought.

I could play Master of Puppets decently well when I was a beginner with down picking. Then I spent like 2 years practicing alternate picking and actually got so used to it that I screwed up my ability to down pick. I can barely do it now...I'm worse at that riff than I was as beginner. It's really frustrating. Now I have to go back and retrain my hand/arm to be able to down pick fast.

Just think of a beat in your head and down pick only to the beat add some ups every now and again or set up a metronome at about 100 and down pick or whatever speed to your liking g
I like to consider my downpicking as one of my highest level skills. It’s all thanks to trivium and me forgetting what the tempos were and doing them way too quick. But it was also Metallica and a bit of slipknot. But obviously it’s not perfect yet and I’ll still need to work on it through my career

Thanks for the vid Jamie. I was getting all OCD over the past weekend because I had a riff or two that I played and was mad at myself for struggling to alternate pick them. Btw, one of them was Master of Puppets coincidentally. Edit: After actually watching the vid (LOL for immediately commenting) I saw that 4 out of 7 of the riffs I have played throughout my guitar 'career' :D
Love playing ember to inferno, for some reason (I really don’t know why) but the bridge riff in Like light to flies by Trivium, that riff always burns my forearm haha! It’s a strange one because I don’t really get that problem much anymore!
since i started guitar, i always tend to use downpick instead of alternate- or economy-picking... it was kinda funny to see how my friends couldn't keep up when we started jamming like light to the flies by trivium back in the days ^^
Man downpicking has always been my weakness. I'm really more of a galloping guy, but there's something about that sledgehammer force and tight sound from downpicking that makes me practice and practice.

TBDM slayer and tritium i don't agree they there intended to be solely downpicked, except maybe the chugs. the trivium riff would of been much easier to alternate, I believe that was how they wrote that. but still great choices. master was my favorite cause I too found the best way to pick was by down stroke. great playing none- the- less
Yes i know the downpicking in Master is amazing but, i always miss the Disposable Heroes's downpicking in these videos. It is definitely one of the greatest of all time, in my opinion... by the way the video awesome anyway. Great job dude
I'm glad Waking the Demon was on this list. Most times I see it covered it is played using alternate picking but watch any video of them playing it and you can see them play downstrokes.
Jaime Slays ive noticed you have a few ibanez, a solar and ltd and a schecter. Out of all of them in your opinion which do you find to be better as far as quality and bang for your money. I really like schecter. But that ibanez and solar you have are super sweet. I'm gonna be in the market for a new guitar soon.

Great sound! what usb interface do you use? I have a line pod gx for many years.. or is it worth buying a different one? I'm not happy with the sound it makes
Three things. 1) The guy that introduced me guitar 35 years ago told me that if you only play downstrokes, you are only playing half of the guitar. 2) That said, how is Paranoid not included? That song is a perfect example of how a downstroke only technique lends to a heavier tone, as well as displaying how playing at the 12th fret of the E string vs the 7th fret of the A string makes a difference. Playing that song in it's entirety (with the exception of the solo) with downstrokes only is a great example of the point you are trying to prove. This one song, through it's simplicity, can teach a lot. 3) When you are playing "Angel of Death", why are you playing the muted E chord with your index finger, when the next chord is an F? You could save yourself the trouble of changing fingering by strumming the E with your middle finger and using your index and ring fingers for the change to the F (I guess you haven't tried to play and sing this part at the same time).
I clicked on this video solely in hopes that Waking The Demon made the list. I'm actually blown away by how many people alternate pick that main riff, and it doesn't sound nearly as aggressive as it should.

Slow down your picking, until your fretting hand can catch up. As is most likely the case, your fretting hand is your left hand, correct? Let me guess, you are right-handed. Learning the mechanics of playing guitar was easy for me because I am left-handed, but I play right-handed. My fretting hand didn't have to catch up to my picking hand. They both developed at the same pace. Take your time, and don't get discouraged.
Ive considered my self a skilled guitarist...but i realized my down picking was shit so a month ago i set my metro to 140 bpm and a hour a day down down dow lol
The BFMV riff really depends on which guy in the band you watch play it. Matt does the whole riff down picking, but padge does alternate picking during that riff.
Hard for me to down pick at home, when going over songs. But at band rehearsal, I can down pick everything; think it's because of the volume, because we rehearse very loud.

was one of the first metal riffs I learned when I started electric guitar. My poor Fender Bullet Strat at the time did not know what hit it.

@@JamieSlays because having to kinda jump up and down fast with your hand to palm mute adds to the difficulty (at least for me)
