Gen 8 update: In gen 8 Nat dex staraptor dropped to uu again. Staraptor was this close to staying in uu thanks to the additions of skarmory and celesteela who walled it completely and were metagame staples. Unfortunately magnezone dropped to uu and it immediately created a disgusting star-zone core that demolished every steel-type that gave raptor problems, thus getting its technical 4th UUBL placement as it was banned from UU national dex
yeah too bad gamefreak gave it a 10 point sp.def boost instead in gen 6. It's a glass cannon thats either draining it's own health with recoil or dropping it's defenses.
I've always maintained that Talonflame was a lackluster bird who coasted by on such an amazing ability. Gale Wings Staraptor is scarier because it actually does have a good Attack stat, while Talonflame is outdone by freaking Doduo in that regard.

Magnezone will be returning for one of the expansions, which would have given any Staraptor struggling with Corviknight a perfect teammate to tag out to with U-turn. Personally, I think this metal bird owes so much to the dex cuts blocking a premier Magnet Pull user.

It doesn't have to worry about having its fast attacker role be taken by stuff like Greninja, Tapu Koko, Dragapult, Kartana, and Sand Rush Excadrill, and Megas like Charizard Y or Swampert under Swift Swim, as examples. 3. Reckless gives it an extra boost to its power, allowing it to hit damage thresholds it couldn't before with Double-Edge and Brave Bird when it only had Intimidate. 4. Buffs to Rapid Spin and Defog make hazard clearing easier than ever, allowing Raptor to get in safer, and momentum switch moves aside from U-Turn exist now so it has even easier times than before, particularly pairing well with Rotom. 5. A last side but about Rotom, in addition to pairing well with it, the changes to the Rotom appliances to no longer be Ghost gives Staraptor an additional Pokemon to check and hit hard, no Rotom wants to get hit by a 252 EV+ Attack boosting nature Brave Bird, let alone Double-Edge.
UU is terribly weak to flying/fighting. In fact a lot of things are.... The only reason talonflame wasn't OP is because fire/flying is easier to manage. If they gave Gale winds to staraptor in gen 6 it would have been in Ubers after the ONE THING that can tank it went (Aegislash)

BL needs a new tier at this point just because of how many Pokemon are in it. It used to be that it was a UI banlist with only 3-5 mons but now there is almost as many UUBL mons as OU mons...
Gen 9 Update : After a decade and a half of constant effort, Staraptor has finally been allowed into a main gen UU for the first time in its lifespan - and though it is not the world-beater it once was, it fits in very comfortably in the metagame as an excellent offensive threat that one needs to keep in mind for teambuilding, or else they will find themselves torn apart with only a little prediction. It took a long time, but Staraptor finally has a home.
Another thing that could be mentioned.... Staraptor was a terror in AAA (Almost Any Ability) in Gen 6. Gale Wings Staraptor shows all that Talonflame could've been but wasn't, it was stupidly strong lmao.
Best bird starting Pokemon* As the gen 7 rework of gale wings made clear, gale wings is an amazing ability strapped to what would otherwise be an ok Pokemon. I shudder at the thought of what staraptor could accomplish with it.

Talonflame needed Gale Wings and plummeted after the nerf, while Staraptor kicked tail no matter its ability. Personally I thought Staraptor was always better.
In recent news: June tier shifts has Staraptor fall to RU. Staraptor just recently got banned from RU. Welcome to BL hell, we missed you. How this guy is now officially in a higher tier than Blissey and Weavile is insane.
They should add a move called “Hawk Dance” where it’s a physical type Quiver Dance, boosting your: Attack, Defense, and Speed. Staraptor would be a _POWERFUL_ candidate tbh
I think calling it Hawk Dance might be putting a bit too much bias on something that can be beneficial to not only staraptor, but it's still a good idea. Though, I can also imagine an ability that's like Gorilla Tactics, but it's a Choice Scarf. That would be cool.
I see what you mean by putting too much emphasis; however, we do have to take into consideration that Quiver Dance translates to “Butterfly Dance”- since there are Pokémon who aren’t based off butterflies that can learn the move. “Hawk Dance” can open viability doors for other bird Pokémon as well too- mostly the regional birds- allowing the lower tiered birds such as Unfezant, Dodrio, Toucannon, etc. to get more shine. Bird Pokémon have a reputation for not being the most viable anyways. An ability that’s like a choice scarf would be good too.
Lamier Anthony Okay, I can see your point. Though, the translated name doesn't exactly convey the English name, so it can be more generalized to allow more than just the birds to learn it. For example, calling it Whirl Dance or Flutter Dance could make it work on the Birds, but other fliers too through the name alone.
Staraptor has been one of my favorites since DPP. I've always had a softspot for early route pokemon and it was a joy to have one that was actually powerful all the way in the late game.
The real message of staraptor being uubl for so long is that the flying type has actually been sneakingly op ever since the beginning (especially physical ones). I mean looking at the current gen uubl list, we see things like salamence, dragonite, and gyarados. What do all of these mons have in common? The ability to abuse z bounce/fly after setting up a dragon dance or two and then nuking something with a high powered stab move with few resists, which can be easily accounted for with something like eq. The fact that flying coverage pairs so well with steel-killing coverage (eq z fly ddancers, staraptor`s cc, tornadus` focus blast/superpower) really speaks volumes as to how much potential the flying type has (as mega ray showed us a couple videos ago xD) Hell in gen 5 I believe tornadus incarnate apparently kept bouncing between uu and ou all because of that flying typing. Staraptor having essentially one of the best coverage moves to pair with it`s flying stab is what really makes it so strong, on top of it`s good attack and speed of course. Anyhow here`s to hoping the next gen can make the regional bird somewhat strong as well!

Man, I love Staraptor. It's just such an amazing nuke mon. I used to use it a fair bit in gens 5/6 but haven't given it much love lately. I can't tell you how many times it'd tear half the opponent's team apart from the get go since so few trainers were properly prepared for that monster. And yes, I think that's the best summary for Raptor, monster.
Aside from Pidgeot and nostalgia, this guy is perhaps my favorite bird out of all the generations. He was always a solid and reliable choice to run with and had a great design. He is indeed the best bird.
One of my favorite mons to take into BSS! Reckless with Brave Bird, Double Edge, Close Combat, and U Turn. Double Edge mostly for electric types like rotom. Really fun to use!

My favorite pokemon of all time. My ace and pretty much starter (I was 8 and didn't know what release meant) in Pearl. My first level 100 and the Pokemon I always used to fight my little brother's ace (A level 100 WC Gastrodon). The pokemon who helped me beat Cynthia in Pearl, Cynthia in Platinum, and was traded to Heartgold just to fight and beat Red. My best friend.
The most awesome thing about Staraptor is that it still uses the same technique that he used back in his debut generation. Most Pokemon have to adapt to compete in the meta game.
Next to Talonflame this bird is _baller._ Yea yea yea I'm one of THOSE trainers that prefers Talonflame over Staraptor but....god damn that bird is awesome.
Talonflame (HA) was OP. Priority brave bird with choice band, U turn, flare blitz. It could kill anything with 2 brave birds, it was banned in mono types due to one shotting anything not rock, then ability got nerfed. Talonflame Aka the janitor (may he rest in peace) was the best.

4. Buffs to Rapid Spin and Defog make hazard clearing easier than ever, allowing Raptor to get in safer, and momentum switch moves aside from U-Turn exist now so it has even easier times than before, particularly pairing well with Rotom.
5. A last side but about Rotom, in addition to pairing well with it, the changes to the Rotom appliances to no longer be Ghost gives Staraptor an additional Pokemon to check and hit hard, no Rotom wants to get hit by a 252 EV+ Attack boosting nature Brave Bird, let alone Double-Edge.

Staraptor is one of my favourites ever. Never knew it had such a VGC presence, which makes me happy! Way to go, bravest bird.
Gen 9 Update : After a decade and a half of constant effort, Staraptor has finally been allowed into a main gen UU for the first time in its lifespan - and though it is not the world-beater it once was, it fits in very comfortably in the metagame as an excellent offensive threat that one needs to keep in mind for teambuilding, or else they will find themselves torn apart with only a little prediction.
It took a long time, but Staraptor finally has a home.

I see what you mean by putting too much emphasis; however, we do have to take into consideration that Quiver Dance translates to “Butterfly Dance”- since there are Pokémon who aren’t based off butterflies that can learn the move.
“Hawk Dance” can open viability doors for other bird Pokémon as well too- mostly the regional birds- allowing the lower tiered birds such as Unfezant, Dodrio, Toucannon, etc. to get more shine. Bird Pokémon have a reputation for not being the most viable anyways. An ability that’s like a choice scarf would be good too.

A New Pokemon Movie: B For Borderline
Staraptor has been one of my favorites since DPP. I've always had a softspot for early route pokemon and it was a joy to have one that was actually powerful all the way in the late game.
The real message of staraptor being uubl for so long is that the flying type has actually been sneakingly op ever since the beginning (especially physical ones). I mean looking at the current gen uubl list, we see things like salamence, dragonite, and gyarados. What do all of these mons have in common? The ability to abuse z bounce/fly after setting up a dragon dance or two and then nuking something with a high powered stab move with few resists, which can be easily accounted for with something like eq. The fact that flying coverage pairs so well with steel-killing coverage (eq z fly ddancers, staraptor`s cc, tornadus` focus blast/superpower) really speaks volumes as to how much potential the flying type has (as mega ray showed us a couple videos ago xD) Hell in gen 5 I believe tornadus incarnate apparently kept bouncing between uu and ou all because of that flying typing. Staraptor having essentially one of the best coverage moves to pair with it`s flying stab is what really makes it so strong, on top of it`s good attack and speed of course. Anyhow here`s to hoping the next gen can make the regional bird somewhat strong as well!

Man, I love Staraptor. It's just such an amazing nuke mon. I used to use it a fair bit in gens 5/6 but haven't given it much love lately. I can't tell you how many times it'd tear half the opponent's team apart from the get go since so few trainers were properly prepared for that monster.
And yes, I think that's the best summary for Raptor, monster.

Aside from Pidgeot and nostalgia, this guy is perhaps my favorite bird out of all the generations. He was always a solid and reliable choice to run with and had a great design. He is indeed the best bird.

The most awesome thing about Staraptor is that it still uses the same technique that he used back in his debut generation. Most Pokemon have to adapt to compete in the meta game.
If beating them up doesn't work, it just means you have to beat them up even harder.

Talonflame (HA) was OP. Priority brave bird with choice band, U turn, flare blitz. It could kill anything with 2 brave birds, it was banned in mono types due to one shotting anything not rock, then ability got nerfed. Talonflame Aka the janitor (may he rest in peace) was the best.
