    ...good video, but to add a couple of tips: 1. I know its just a demonstration and just a minor point, but while deburring, I hold line such that deburring chips and debris does NOT fall into line (in hydraulics, cleanliness is crucial...it doesn't take much of a metal chip to slice a rubber seal!). 2. Before reshaping line, its better to lube contact area of line and die, to minimize die wear, and also allow line to slide along surfaces as it reforms line (clean off lube with solvent to prevent brake fluid contamination...bleeding will flush out any minor remaining contaminants).     If you're a reloader, a cartridge case neck deburring tool works perfect for brake lines.

    Just ordered a couple extra of the 3/16 dies for my flaring tool. Those ones are a bit delicate and although I haven't broke one I wanted to get a couple extra.
    Yes, my hand is up - I indeed have made the best looking double flares ever only to realize I forgot to put on the fitting.

    I know its an older video, since then I've long since gone to ni-cop lines for fuel and brakes. Much easier to work with and has held up well.

    I decided to try out the Block Flare kit like is used in the video. My stepson made about 20 practice flares, with about an 80% failure rate. I explained to him that unless he could make the ends 100%, he shouldn't plan on using any lines he made up, to then be put on a vehicle.
    Because of the fact that here in Michigan, the use of salt during the winter, causes all of the underbody lines to rust-out & can turn into a nightmare. Especially in areas where both the fuel & brake lines are bracketed together & run from the front to the rear of the vehicle.
    I opted to buy a Hydraulic Flare Tool. The one I picked is made by MasterCool, ($350). One of the main reasons for getting this type of flaring kit is because it has all the correct Dies & Adapters, so we can make any type of line that needs replacing on vehicles. Brake Lines, Transmission Lines, Fuel Lines. The kit has all the dies & adapters required to do all those mentioned. Like anyone, I didn't like the fact that I would be starting out with a $350 investment but like I mentioned above, 1 we live in Michigan & that winter slush, salt brine is a line/underbody killer, 2 being able to be under the vehicle & flaring the ends helps out a great deal. A friend of mine who was my mechanic had a Mastercool hydraulic flare kit & I'd say it only took an hour to do our 1998 Honda Accord back in 2014. Since he had to retire from wrenching in 2018, it was either start taking the vehicle in to a shop for the repair, or do it here at home.
    And after my wife told me she called some shops & the best quote was $1,500 to replace all the lines from the Proportioning Valve-Down to the Calipers/rear Drums on our daughters 1996 Pontiac Grand AM. I told her no-way & please stop calling anymore shops because they're probably going to use the same tools I have, actually will have. Plus one of the last times one of out kids had an issue with their vehicle, she called a local repair shop, then the guy talked her into doing the repair, so she had her son take his car there.
    Great video by the way. I'll have my stepson watch your video so he can see how it should be done & how the flaring should turn out (every time).....

    That first bending tool looks like Harbor Freight's best bender. They have another for a dollar cheaper but I've heard bad things about it. I wanted to see this model in action to see if it flattened out the bend but it doesn't. It does look scary at the 0:50 mark but that's because the tubing is sunk down into the groove. Looks like Harbor Freight is going to get another customer soon. Now, I've got to watch the rest of the video to see what more I can learn.

    I never had any luck with that type of flaring tool. The flares were always off center and leaked.

      @@Glaucidium810 Look for KD Tools pt# 2190. The only one available at this point are used on E-Bay these days. Make sure it comes with all the bits. I have one of the larger Mr.Cool hydraulic flaring tools and honestly it doesn't work as well, and costs a lot more money.

    I tried doing this. The clamp I used did not want to hold the line and pushed it out. I tried so many times and tighten the clamp so much I stripped it.

    I got one flare tool but does not have that little part, can you do flares with out it ? I mean has only the cone that press down.,nice video very clear and simple to get it.

    You didn't say what the second die is that you used to make the "full flare". Is it a general one without a size? The same die flipped over? What?

    Bending a tube anywhere in a tube is easy. But how do you get your bend in an exact spot so you aren't too how or high?

      Hello!
      Depending on how tight the radius is on the bender the exact measurement can change from tool-to-tool.
      So I recommend getting familiar with your bender first before making a critical bend.
      grab a piece of scrap tubing and use a sharpie to make a mark on it, now line-up the little crossbar on the bender with the mark and make a 90-degree bend.
      Hold the bent piece of tubing on a flat surface and measure up to the mark made earlier as this will tell you how tight of a radius you can make.
      On the bender I use in this video I believe the radius is 1-1/2" inches, so when bending a line I measure back 1 1/2" from where the bend needs to end up and make a mark on my line, then bend.
      Okay, now the rest of the story, I have used benders like this for many years now and seldom mark them anymore as I can just "eyeball it".
      Although for critical places where multiple lines will be next to each other I still take the time to measure each line.

    does the degree of the bend really matter?I ask because my brake lines are completely destroyed and I don't have nothing to compare the bend toso I figured as long as it doesn't crease and it connects fine it should be okay? what do you think any help thank you in advance

      For those who are overly concerned with every detail... it might matter.
      But for the rest of us, as long as you have good connections on both ends, the lines are routed safely away from moving parts and heat, and are secured well... that's all that matters.
      Of course, it's advisable to plan out your lines so they appear neat, not haphazard.
      Many classic cars do not still have their original brake lines and prebent lines can be difficult to install in a fully assembled car.

      The cutter is just a tubing and pipe cutter. When you buy a complete flaring kit it usually comes with it. Most basic kits like that one are about $25

    Well, that's not an inverted flare, for starters, it's a double flare. An inverted flare is bubble shaped, and not used on brake lines.

      There are many different types of flaring tools, the one I like is offered by K-D Tools, here is the model number: K-D Tools Automotive Flaring Tool Kit #41860
      It’s nothing fancy, but can be counted on to get the job done.The little blue tubing bender is also nothing fancy, but it really is one of my favorites for bending small tubing. I have other benders costing nearly 6x as much, but I always reach for this one first.     FYI do NOT use that style of flare tool. If your looking for a quality dependable flare spend the money and get a hydraulic or something designed for brake lines. That’s a cheap all around tool he’s using

    Those flaring tools are by far the most useless "one time use" pieces of junk ever invented.
    Buy the mastercool hydraulic flaring too. Its pricey but the best under the car, tight space, etc tool .
    I swapped over the entire ABS system on my car and had to make a good 10-16 flares in tight places, perfect flare every time.
    I broke at least 4 flaring kit things trying to do a line, bent the line, ruined the lines, just crap all around.

      I swapped an L67 supercharged 3800 series 2 engine, tranny, etc into an older oldsmobile silhouette minivan as a project. The ABS didnt really need to be swapped over but the brake lines were all in bad shape. So new lines, newer abs module, and funny enough the 2004 generation Cadillac CTS-V brembo brakes fit the pontiac van/grandprix/regal spindles so she got some brembo calipers during the swap. Rear brembos may go in this summer, I just added the rear carrier to allow for disc brakes vs the original drums on the van.

      I wish i made a time-lapse but it was a pretty lenghty project trying to get it all done.
      PM me on youtube and I can send you the google drive link of my progress on it. I have pics along the way and the full swap steps. I kept an excel file in the making of the wiring harnesses since the original van wiring was kept in place with the motor bringing its own PCM. Got into a bit of PCM programming as well which actually applies to your Vortec PCM as well :) I still have the programming tools as it was needed to update the vin and engine properties for the van, and disable security on the key or it wouldnt start.
