You didn't mention one of the best ways to narrow results...perhaps you don't know about it. You can input keywords you're looking for like 'wool skirt' and bypass massive amounts of results by typing a dash or hyphen and then typing a keyword for what you don't want. So if I'm shopping for a wool skirt I would type "wool skirt -black -blue -pleated" to indicate that I definitely want a wool skirt, just please not black or blue or pleats. The hyphen informs the database to remove any entry with that word. I believe this also works for Google.
+++ Thank you! In a related note, "collared" made me pause. I don't use the word collared. Maybe because I'm Australian and Australians tend to butcher words, haha. So I've been searching using "collar." This made me wonder if Etsy does stemming like Google (when it automatically includes variants of the word, like: pull could also be pulling, pulled... Bill Pullman). Anyway. I tried searching collared blouse vs. collar blouse. Apparently Etsy doesn't do stemming. You get thousands more results with collared. Collared ftw
When we first adopted my dog Ranger, he would walk up to my mom and take her hand in his mouth to comfort her. He was so gentle and sweet about it, it was sad we had to tell him mouths don't go on people. We've also had to explain that they aren't for walls, clothes, carpet, rocks, dirt, leashes, the pantry, shoes, cell phones... but he's a good boy and never goes back to a bad habit.
Hahaha I kinda have the same problem over here though! I always have to check off "in the US only" because I always fall in love with items from overseas and then the shipping is like $$$$$$ 😂😂
Same here in Germany - Though often as long as it's in Europe the shipping isn't that bad. But the majority of Etsy shops are, sadly, located in the US.
So proud of you!!! I wish that I could do this, but I am a big plus size lady and the plus sizes in vintage generally only go up to like a size 16 now or are in terrible shape. This is why I am buying older patterns to size up and make 'vintage' clothes for my size.
I opened my Etsy account a few days ago to see if I would get the courage to buy something vintage but really we needed this one ultimate guide because it's a dificult quest. Thank you and you have ma prayer 😀
Video idea! you could do a video on how you care for your vintage clothing :0 because at least for me (lol) i always get nervous about washing some of my delicate items :) id be cool to see how you take care of your stuff and give some tips!
I buy aa lot of things at thrift stores, I have a peculiar size so I can never buy tight-ish things without trying them on beforrehand. but I recently bought a beautiful id say fifties pencil skirt, and I put it in the washing mashine, it smelled kinda funky. and then it got completely fucked up and the colours bled on eaach other. I kept it because it may be good for halloween. but oh how sad I was to have ruined that beautiful skirt
today it seemed to be a depressive day but a notification of your video appears and I get out of bed in which I have been lying for more than 14 hours. thank you for making me get out of bed to eat and watch your video greetings from ciudad juarez chihuahua mexico
Lol i bought the 80s does 30s burgundy sweather from the seller that was constantly showing, she's very lovely and clothes from her store are in really wonderful shape and quite cheap
Rachelllllllll. I love your video it was beautiful. 10/10 So a bit ago you quit your day job to be a TH-camr full time. Which really inspired me as of 3 days ago. Why? I don't know but it did! And now I'm writing and getting the feels out. And thank you for being you and sharing. Now maybe my poetry will take off! Wish me luck🤞🏻!
I'm very proud of u my vintage aesthetic queen also second hand shops are fucking AMAZING for awesome vintage pieces. with a little TLC and some fixing up and it looks good as new
I once bought myself the cutest blue vintage dress from the 50's, it fit me perfectly and it had amazing pockets. I forgot to pack it up when I was moving for college and my parents got rid of it. I still think about it and mourn its loss even though its been almost 4 years...
Rachel: "I wanted to make this Video for a long time but i didnt wanted to buy anything and I now remembered: I dont have to buy something" Also Rachel: *buys something 5 minutes into the video*
It had been a long time since I had used Etsy... and now, I have been reminded of the joy, and severe amounts of hours I can sit and procrastinate on it.
I’d love to see a video of your vintage essentials-your favorite pieces that you couldn’t live without and that you feel define your style. Maybe makeup and hair looks, too!
"I want to buy them all." I feel you on that completely. Me every time I'm searching or even just browsing for vintage Victorian bodices, skirts, and ensembles.
I just want to say thank you for this video. I have been subscribed for a while and admire your style. Finding vintage items on Etsy can be daunting, and as you’ve said expensive, and I appreciate seeing how others search for items to build a vintage aesthetic. Even though I have a vintage accessory shop on Etsy, I shy away from the clothing because I have a hard time picturing how an outfit will come together. I love the idea of trying to recreate a look from a photo.
I'm glad! Looking at old photos helps a TON to just get an idea of what can go together and such, and then you can kinda mix and match with different colors and patterns!
Oh, I know how much searching goes into finding the perfect vintage clothes! I have four pages of notes on my phone, filled to the brim, of links to clothes I was trying to narrow down😂 I have been saving my money from birthday cards for years (at least five!) so I bought a plaid skirt, petticoat, ruffled shirt, and a pair of shoes, all from the 1940's or 50's! Plus, I received two hats and a cardigan, all authentic 1950's, as gifts!😁
I have an Etsy shop and even though it’s not vintage, it’s still cool to see you showing how to use the site ❤️☺️ most of the shops on there are pretty small and every little bit helps
Oh my goodness. I was standing on the precipice of devastation there thinking this video was going to be Frodo free. I think you're great. I love your content but I'm a hardcore Frodo addict.
Loved seeing the process of how you draw inspiration from pics to the actual outfit composition! 💓 Also, the epiphany and 36 edits made me laugh out loud. Alone. With earphones. So...😂😂😂 If I may suggest, a vintage skincare routine video (era-appropriate practices, but not the unsafe ones of course!) that's a goooood contrast to how far we've come! (also will watch if it's your personal skincare routine!) 😊
This video is great! You showed me how to search for a specific look rather than searching for a specific time. Let's face it, some sellers don't know the exact date because that is hard.
5:25 "sometimes it takes a lot of digging, it's not just a simple typing in something and falling in love with it." ....... Me over here sighing whilst I fall in love with everything you searched. *inhales & exhales slowly*
It’s been 84years.... but worth the wait! Awww Frodo so cute and such a dainty paw what a gentleman though when you record he should be in his fancy clothes really hehe xx
Yes I need this! I am trying to add more vintage things to my wardrobe. I only really where black but I’d like to find some vintage staples! Thank you 🙏🏻
I always look at Etsy for vintage dresses and skirts but I have never actually bought anything! I’m bad at putting outfits together but I loved this video, you make it look so easy
I actually used a similar technique to find my first true vintage piece (a gray 1940s wool suit with a velvet collar.) It was the first thing that I sought out for a specific event. Normally I just kind of but whatever I can get secondhand as it strikes me from either Etsy or a handful of other online vintage sellers through Instagram.
I watched this video this morning and, because of taht, this afternoon I went on Etsy and there was a dirndl (which I’ve been looking for since you mentioned them in a video ages ago) IN MY SIZE. The stars aligned!!! 😂
& just like that its 3AM ... just found your vids and couldn't stop watching apparently cuz it's been 4 1/2 hours. Love your style & LOVE your dog even more ..🤗
I shop on Etsy a LOT. I still learn things about narrowing a search though. Interesting video. I wish all sellers included 1) measurements, 2) fiber content, and 3) lots of pictures. It's so frustrating when one of these is missing.
When looking for vintage ALWAYS type Vintage in the search box before anything else. Ex. Vintage wool skirt or Vintage white blouse. That way it will weed out all of the "new" products. Each time you type in a new item, it resets to showing "All" so you have to make sure you always use Vintage every time you type in a new search. And of course, you can also click "vintage" on the sidebar but you have to scroll a lot just to find it.
I super love your channel ❤️ But I was hoping for much more detail! What kinds of features and cuts and fabrics do you look for when you shop, how to be accurate about sizing (I was like, an inch too small?? Would never work for me haha), do you also have favorite shops that you go back to a lot, what types of items do you have the most luck with, how to get the most out of search results, etc. 🙂 A couple of the things, like narrowing search by size, were confusing, bc 1) you said you don’t actually do that and 2) number sizing makes no sense so someone would miss a lot of potential results that way! Anyway, if you ever did a sequel video to this with a lot more detail that would be great-plus I *would* love to see the results of Etsy shopping and if they fit you, anything expected/unexpected about them, etc ❤️
Ahh so excited for this video, your style is so cute and I want to buy more vintage but it can be expensive and I still haven't exactly mastered the vintage look
I'm not a vintage purist and I'm poor so I almost never search by time period. I just search for the actual item I'm looking for (length, pleats/no pleats, color, fabric) and regardless of what time period it's actually from, it ends up looking how I wanted
I love Etsy!!! At least 85% of my vintage wardrobe comes from there. I follow slot of my favorite shops on Instagram. Its a good way to get sneak peaks at what's new before it gets added to Etsy. Repeat customers are always welcome.
I love Etsy. Anyone can run a small business from Etsy, with a bit of effort and have passive income, but also genuine artisans can sell crafts, collectors can get coveted pieces out to the world to enjoy. It's just perfect. And the customer service rivals that of Amazon.
Well aren't you a doll! Random find, very exciting! I've subscribed, no pressure or anything but....... You better not let me down! 🤣 Looking forward to binge watching your videos and leaving a ton of odd, yet appreciative and hopefully constructive comments. Welcome to an epic friendship for the ages! ❤️❤️
Rachael, if you are ever in Tampa Florida, you need to visit a shop call La France. It’s a gold mine for vintage clothing, and they have lots of sizes.
For people interested in 40’s looks I believe the seller that turned up constantly does The Closet Historian channel on TH-cam. She has some pretty interesting videos on building a vintage collection.

Victoria Parnell That's a cool tip. Thanks for sharing.
Ooooh I didn't know that!!! That would be why I didn't mention it! 😂🙏 Thank you!
Great tip! It will be very helpful!
Nice to know Etsy uses boolean operators (-, +, *, etc.). Will have to test it out, as most sites won't accept.

Frodo’s paw placement in your hand is so gentle ❤️🥰😍

Me: doesn't wear vintage
Also me: excitedly clicks on your videos
An ni I’m only now just getting into it since I used to think a lot of the items in thrift stores weren’t that cute.
I'm always a little bit disappointed with the UK vintage offerings on etsy- all the gorgeous stuff seems to be elsewhere and have a huge shipping fee!
I feel that so often I have the opposite problem
Hahaha I kinda have the same problem over here though! I always have to check off "in the US only" because I always fall in love with items from overseas and then the shipping is like $$$$$$ 😂😂
I always have that problem! I'm from the Netherlands And all the good stuff seems to be in the UK or the US. ...or not in my size oops.
All the way here in Aussie, I feel this HARD.
Same here in Germany - Though often as long as it's in Europe the shipping isn't that bad. But the majority of Etsy shops are, sadly, located in the US.
Vintage is 25 years and older.. So 1994 is considered vintage.... I have socks older then that!
Hahahaha exactly
I’ll now refer to myself at vintage ✨
Ok I was always told it was 20 years and older. So that would be 1999.
@@LSSYLondon it can't be 1999... That was like five minutes ago
My fashion designer teacher said "vintage is something inspired in a past era"
Even more ambiguous 😂
