HI I LOVE YOU. I forgot to mention the brand of my winter boots (not that they're vintage or anything), but they're "Spring Step". Also didn't mention any thermal wear since I don't have any, but that would definitely help too! If you guys have any tips on what you guys wear to combat the cold, be sure to leave them in the comments!

I have no experience wearing vintage style in winter (or any season) but I recommended knitted wool socks. I think every one in Finland have at least one pair of them, but I don't know are you familiar with these. I'm sorry for my bad english, I'm just 13 years old girl from Finland who would love to start building my vintage closet but all vintage (or even vintage stylish) clothes are too big for me. Btw I love your videos💞

Great video ! I never comment on anything (too shy, and English is not my first language, please be kind) but there are some tips that my grandma and mama gave me too keep warm and look fabulous in Parisian winter :
If you are wearing a skirt : a slip and has many petticoats has you can fit under your skirt, without looking funny. Wool, thick cotton, velour or cashmere is the best to keep warm. On a regular basis, fabric from natural fibers are usually the best. Even if it make clothes more expensive, they usually last longer. (I can still wear the linen and cotton dresses from my great-grandma, and she was not kind with her clothes)
Gloves : I wear two pairs ! I get some thin undergloves from winter sports shops and I add my pretty winter gloves on top, when it starts snowning.
Multiple layers : For everything, really. I do the same thing with socks that I do with gloves ! My grandma would make me change if I did not were a tanktop under my shirt, and then my sweater and jacket/coat. On a very cold day I can wear up to 5 layers outside and 3 layers when I'm Inside.
Shoes : invest in a very good pair and take care of it. I took me way too many shops but I found a pair of ankle high leather boots that I love. They were a bit expensive but I've been wearing then for 3 year (expect in the summer) I clean and wax (is it the good word?) them every month or so, and have the end of the heel replaced every year.
Always carry an ombrella, especially if you do not own a good raincoat ! Winter fabrics are thick and take a lot of time to dry, getting then wet during the day is your worst ennemy, if you cannot change you'll end up sick ! And there is nothing worse than leaving school (or work) and noticing that your coat is still wet from the morning.
My mama general advice on clothes : when you can spend money, you should buy expensive clothes if you are sure that they will last you ten years. You'll stop wearing a good suit when it no longer fits, not because it is falling appart at the seams.

In my books, if you need an umbrella, it is not winter but autumn or spring. Winter equals freezing. But I do agree on the clothing part.
Also to keep your shoes in shape, get two pairs. If you wear shoes for some hours, they need to rest one day before next use.

I dress Edwardian and sew my own clothes and trust me nothing feels better than putting on a camisole, than corset, than corset cover, than blouse. And layering thighs. And a long wool skirt. And I don't ever get cold. Like walking through knee high snow and taking off my coat because I was hot. Friend thought I was crazy when he saw me like that. But it's so comfy😊

4:26 the best thing ive ever learned about historical fashion is that in the 19th century and before, women would wear quilted petticoats- literally a blanket made into a skirt!
I’ve been trying to incorporate moire “historical common sense fashion type stuff” into my wardrobe- which means basically making all of my clothes with natural fibres wherever possible (especially because I live in Queensland, where it gets really hot and humid in the summer- it’s what we are known for, apart from that massive coral reef). But cotton and linen in summer means that even if I were to layer up and clothe myself from neck to ankle like the Victorians (time period, not Aussie state), I’d still be cooler than I would be in a polyester anything. And I put that to the test this summer, making myself cotton and linen nighties (which I practically live in because I’m disabled). And oh boy! What a difference! I reckon I only sweated half the amount of buckets!
And for winter (ha!) I tend to go for long skirts (even if I have to be super careful with the wheelchair- I HATE pants. Just hate them). Now I used to live in the one area of Queensland that actually does get a winter (a winter compared to the rest of the state at least- my house would get to minus 6 Celsius, as opposed to Brisbane, where it’s rare for it to get below double digits even once, even right before dawn). And I still kept to my long skirts, but paired them with thermals, knee high boots with big fluffy socks, and a couple of petticoats, which really helped. I think a quilted petticoat would have been a bit much for Highfields weather- though maybe for the first two winters I lived there, before I got used to the cold.
But I did also love the infinity scarf headscarf trick, though I did have a few people in town ask if I was Muslim? No, just cold. But now my lovely scarf sits unused, having not been used even once since I moved down off the mountain. The same can be said for my pretty princess coat that swishes and basically has a circle skirt in the bottom. Very sad.

Quilted skirts also made a comeback in the fifties with teenagers. I own one and can attest to the fact that they are very warm. (then again, I live in Georgia where it doesn't get very cold)- however, mine still proved to be very insulating during December in the North Carolina mountains.
I live for your style. I love that you wear vintage and it isn’t costumey. Like, you don’t go for the huge petticoats, you exemplify wearable vintage. It’s not like the girls who do go for the more costumey stuff are bad or anything, it’s just that it’s not what I like, ya dig?

Indeed, not everyone had huge petticoats. My mother did not have even one puffy one, just moderate ones, closer to slips.
Those petticoats were just a blip in the 50's, weren't they? Nobody wore them in the 20's, 30's, and 40's.
Layers. That's the answer to everything in winter. Here in northern Sweden we still layer like crazy, but with slightly altered materials. Back in the day it was mostly cotton, linen and wool. This is a translation of a text from the Nordic museum about what women wore after the second world war in winter:
"An adult womans wardrobe could look something like this: A woollen winter coat; a filt hat for the head; a pair of brown, half-high leather heels; a pair of galoshes in brown or black rubber with a flannel lining to wear over the shoes in case of rain or snow. A woollen, straight skirt in a single colour or a woollen skirt of a wider model with pleats; a blouse in wool flannel with long sleeves; a hand knitted cardigan of Swedish wool yarn; a slightly fancier dress in a thin wool cloth. They knitted a lot, everything from stockings to two-pieces. Undergarments(tank top and pants with short legs) in silk charmeuse(mostly salmon pink). Full length socks in light brown rayon. A slip was worn underneath the dress."
This is most likely a description based of off the standards in southern Sweden where winters are more soggy than snowy. I know that northerners worn, in addition to the above list, knitted hats, scarves and gloves in thick wool. Warm shoes, probably the same they used for skiing, and thick woollen socks were(and still are) a must when the temperature drops below zero.
Hi! Love your vintage looks. Being older, 67, I remember some of your vintage years, and have memories of Mom, Grandmother, and aunts telling of keeping warm in winter. I really think the main reason you don't get many winter pics to help guide you is because they were taking mainly pics of being dressed up, which they did less often in the winter. In the main, they dressed up less often/took photos less often (as little as possible!) in the winter. They usually dressed much differently then the special occasion pictures--and more warmly. Many women wore much heavier knit hose or stockings in the winter, often with wool in the blend, usually black (ugly according to my family sources.) My mother simply despised the long, itchy, hot black stockings she had to wear every winter until she was a teenager. [At least she was not sewn into them and her "combinations" (a loose, short legged, short sleeved union suit with a drop seat). Some of her classmates in the 1920s were! Mom said by spring their stench was pretty
awful. TMI?] Her Grandmother wore the wool blend black stockings every winter as an adult. Whenever work needed to be done outside, Mom wore wool trousers over the stockings and/or long johns. I think her mom wore the wool stocking and/or long johns under long skirts, if some showed, so what! They lived in northern Illinois and Wisconsin.
I remember in the fifties wearing heavier tights or stockings with dresses as a child, were often in colors to match the outfits. We girls in my classes also wore slacks under our dresses to school, took them off and hung them with our coats. Mother and my teenage sister wore hose with dresses, but often put long wool socks and warm boots on over the hose to travel, and carried dress shoes in a special bag--both to keep warm and save the shoes from damage.

as far as I know did vintage ladies layer up like no tomorrow when it got really cold. Since clothes were a lot more expensive back then, that could also mean grandpas old trousers underneath, or an old mans coats over everything else. They layered with what they had. But I guess they were not keen on getting fotographed like that, so most pictures seem to be of the rare occasions where they dressed up and cold be damned, because what will the in laws think if I turn up wearing winter boots!
But one can save a lot the outfit with an awesome coat, so I really agree with you for that it is the most important :)

Your total right because having you photo taken was not like today as film was price so there did not photograph the ever day lives it was more to remember a special day and no one wants the photo taken when they don’t look there best so like today photos they probably staged to look nice and then they all probably put back on there warm less nice looking clothes

Sometimes I even layer skirts to keep my legs a little warmer. My favorite combo is a ruffly cotton skirt underneath, which provides a lot of air pockets to trap heat, and wool on the outer layer. I've heard the key to staying warm is providing small air spaces (avoiding skin tight stuff aside from tights) around your body which can trap the warmth you make and keep you cozy. As an habitually cold person, though, I'm just going to have to be okay with looking like a cute sausage in the winter with all my layers.

yes! silk (or poly) slips work the same way and are perfect for the warmth plus the non-itchiness, if a wool skirt isn't lined!

My grandma, who was born in the 20's, was working in the city when she was in her twenties, and since she came from a rural area, she had to walk 45 minutes to go to the train station. She was not allowed to wear pants, i don't think she had access to any thick Nylons and i truly don't know how she did during the winter! (I should ask her about the shoes!) She used to tell me : "The path was going down all the way, so we used to run to go to the station... it was quicker and we were less cold. But coming home was something else..."

I live in Canada and it's minus 20*C. Outdoor fashion goes out the window when it's this cold.
I wear fleece lined winter pants over top of my indoor pants/winter tights. Then my knee high clunky winter boots that have a removable thermal layer on the inside (so it's easy to dry if it gets wet).
Once I'm indoors again at my destination, I take off my outer layers and put on my regular shoes.
I'm sorry she wasn't allowed to wear pants.
People would be more used to the cold back then. These were the days before everyone had central heating so ice on the inside of windows was a thing. I'm glad we've got luxuries like heating and air conditioning but it does mean we're used to being at a constant temperature. I'm a pampered softie and I'm not mad about it. 🙂
Fun fact, they used to have those overshoes that went over their cute regular shoes to keep the cute shoes clean and dry. I saw a lot of winter overshoes with fur rimmed tops and I NEED THEEMMMMMM. LOL also that last blooper is me every time I’m filming when the mailman comes to the door.

I.know this is an old comment, but the company Royal Vintage Shoes (very reputable and trustworthy) have just released some boots with the fur like you describe. Hope this helps!
They are called Pampusher in Sweden, fun fact, they are all different style so they probably fit just one pair of your shoes 😂 1930’s ones are made for those particular shoes 1940’s onese have more space for the heel.

OK so I used to live in the cold tundra snowlands. The very first layer on the skin was silk long underwear. Wintersilks makes the thinnest lightest warmest! I could wear that under the rest of my clothes and I was ok. As long as my feet stayed warm and dry. First layer needs to be long sleeve, or I would freeze.

Try bloomers, they are not that hard to sew yourself, they look cute and are an extra layer to keep you warm

Bonus, if you make them from satin or a similarly slippy kind of fabric they help stop your skirt sticking to your tights when you walk which is always annoying

It's so interesting that I have the opposite experience. I live in the south where it gets much too hot and doesn't get that cold in winter, hardly ever snows or gets below 30 degrees in winter but we have plenty of summer days well above 100 degrees and high humidity. It is easier for me to dress stylishly (dandy/vintage menswear) in colder weather because I like to layer! Sometimes on the hottest days, wearing a short sleeve dress shirt and a vest and tie is just too hot and I don't like shorts so I'm stuck with jeans or slacks. But I can always add a cardigan and blazer over my dress shirt and vest (maybe even a tank top under all that) and put warm leggings under my slacks in the coldest weather. But I know if I wore dresses or skirts they would be so practical in summer, but I am just not a dress girl whatsoever!

I know, right? Where I live it gets over 100 degrees and just stays there. It’s impossible to be cute no matter your style in temperatures that high.
Some people are always cold and can't get warm enough. It is like the cold goes down to their bones. But I can always add more layers, blanket, heating pad, etc and be fine that way. At some point it gets so hot, but I can't take off any more. I cannot take my skin off!
I feel your pain (though I love my skirts, mostly because I found out at an early age that most pants are not made to fit me and I’ve hated them all ever since). But I do live in Brisbane, Australia. If there’s one thing we in Queensland are known for, it’s the heat. And the humidity. And probably also the massive coral reef.

Im from southern california so we dont really get “winter”. When I went to London and Paris this past winter it was about 30° F while I was out there (plus a freak wind storm) and double layering nylons actually kept my legs pretty warm when I would wear a wool skirt that hit just below the knee (all under the pearl coat from collectif or a hell bunny coat that was a bit lighter than the collectif one). Hope this helps some of you out ❤️

GIRL. Winter vintage is so hard. I am from Boston, but live in DC now, and layering is the only way to survive the constant "oh crap it's so cold the wind hurts my face/oh my office is a thousand degrees" struggle!
For shoes - invest in insulating soles, which you then can change between your shoes for warmer feet ;)

I had my mink shawl coat design 1950 vintage and a 1920 mink hat to match, my reversible bomber jacket is made vintage 1941 with mink on one side and lambskin on the other side and the hat I design myself, I also have another mink French beret hat with a vintage design shawl sweater. I really did not think about vintage clothing but love the 1950's design coats and everywhere I go a lot of older people ask if my mink coats are vintage. A beret hat style will really look great on you and it is a vintage style which will compliment your vintage coat. Now, I am taking up sewing my own vintage garments; a 1940's blouse which looks just like purchased at a vintage store. I will be sewing a 1941 dress out of rayon knit with flowers which were popular in that year. I only have been sewing for 3 months and collected vintage patterns; I can purchase vintage fabric which is great. great video

I love vintage clothes, too, and, like you, I have trouble keeping warm in the winter. I fell in love with your wool riding coat!! Such style, and grace! Loved the full skirt on that coat, too! Where I live we don't get a lot of snow, but we do get some pretty raw windy weather! Since I work outside, it is difficult to stay warm and dry. (it rains a ton here) I can't carry an umbrella because I have a cart to push, so I simply get wet. (I live in Canada, on the West Coast, so it's very rainy) Your humour always makes me laugh. You're so cute and funny! You remind me of myself when I was in my twenties! I'm 61 yrs old, now, and a bit creaky in the joints, so winter isn't my friend. I spent 5 years in Yellowknife, NT. I had to give up all sense of style when it came to warmer outerwear. When it's literally -40 you give up. Thankfully I live somewhere with normal winter and I love my peacoat for layering under and keeping toasty.

I live in Oklahoma City and it doesn't often get too cold but occasionally we get arctic blasts like the one we had last week. It got down to 7 degrees F in the mornings. Brrrrrr. I like to use leggings or tights under my pants then a nice thick pair of socks and then boots. I'm not 100% vintage but like to give little nods to vintage. If I do wear skirts or dresses I wear maxi ones with leggings or tights as well.

If you make a video on this, could you please explain what do about button-ups, so they don’t gap and show bust/bra from the side? I really like the look of button ups, and you show a lot of outfits with them, but honestly they freak me out because I don’t want to flash people!
bookworm1412 I tend to add in secret backwards-facing buttons to my shirts in between the regular ones in the chest area. Like so the button is on the inside of the overlapping bit and I add new buttonholes between the original buttons. It’s a bit of a faff, but it’s a more permanent solution than pinning the gaps together or using Velcro strips which aren’t very vintage and also lose their stickiness over time and can catch in your hair or other layers if not stuck together perfectly
Isabelle Barrett that’s a great idea! I’ve been safety pinning my shirts for years! Though I did find one very amazing button up that has a double button at the bust line. That definitely does the trick! If only all button up houses had a double button that came with!

Don't forget about wearing a thicker dress under a skirt! Wearing two skirts can really help keep you warm. That's what I always do on much colder days. It also expands my wardrobe! And as far a tights go, fleece lined is a must!

Also I now understand that part from "Swing Time" (1936) so much better, when Fred&Ginger go to the countryside in winter, the snow is almost knee high and she's wearing the *thickest* fur coat but basically pumps with it. And then she's like all romantically "I'm cold..." 😟 And Freddie's like "You know, you'd wanna be wearing galoshes." 😳

Have you tried sheepskin insoles? I haven't tried them (YET) but I did get a couple of pairs of wool socks this winter and my feet are finally snug and happy!! I got some merino wool ones from sierra trading post and I'm usually allergic to wool but my feet are ok with these!
Oh! Would you be into doing a posture/posing for pictures video? (I scrunch up like a lil snail and it ruins the line of my clothes. Then i remember and then I have a bunch of weird creases)

I know it's a bit pricey but I have silk undergarments, a tank top and leggings so that's always my first layer (on top of my underwear of course) so comfortable and keep u warm. If it's very cold I have a pair of thicker leggings on top and wool over knee socks with a thinner pair of socks under. Haha, layering is key. A nice wool sweater and skirt... I don't have a nice coat tho, I love your coat but me I would feel so uncomfortable in such a feminine coat, strange I know since I wear a dress / skirt under it. Anyways. Love you style 😍

.When I watch this sort of videos it drives me nuts that you wear so little in very cold and snowy weather.. I'm in Israel with at least 3 sweaters on and sometimes doubling on very thick tights. How are you not cold with only one warm layer beside the coat?!
Good video overall but I would love for someone to talk about doubling on sweaters and still looking nice and elegant. short sleeve with a cardigan is for Fall.
+vegishishkabab My coat is honestly all the warmth I need haha! Boston doesn't get very cold, usually the coldest is 5°F and that's very rare. Everyone's different and I'm usually good with a long sleeve, cardigan, and then my coat on top. 😎

Winter stars slowly, your body will acclimatize to the weather. Here in Canada at the begining of winter we feel like dying at -5° C, but after some days of colder temperatures -5° C feels like hot weather.
This is the closest thing to a blessing I have ever received!

See through raincoats with an umbrella.
As much as I hate them, they do work. I hate them because our rainy season is in summer, and you just cook inside the plastic! But it’s definitely rain- rain (or more accurately- monsoon/storm rain, and it does work for those conditions. And for those conditions, an umbrella alone, or a raincoat alone, just won’t cut it.
My issue now is that I use a wheelchair, so... not many wheelchair friendly umbrellas, and I have to put the raincoat on backwards to make sure I’m covered. It’s either that or just never leave the house (which definitely works too!)

I live in Boston!! And I've got some additional tips.
I don't wear vintage really but I do wear ONLY skirts, no pants, and I have to walk to work no matter the weather. Most of my skirts are wool and all below the knee at least. I have all thick knit leggings and fleece-lined tights, and I'll often double or triple them when it's particularly cold. Whatever has the smoothest surface goes inside because that's easier to slip on or off. I'm sure wearing regular pants under a skirt could work great but don't rule out wearing tights under even those, and never be afraid to triple your socks, especially if your boots aren't too insulated or you want to wear another type of shoe.
In my experience wool is significantly less insulating than goose down BUT very good with wind resistance.
I've been looking into some fleece lined tank tops and other under-layers because I know even just wearing an extra shirt can help a lot.

I usually don't watch this type of videos and even if I do I'll skip or stop watching because it gets boring. But yours are different. I love the background music, your home decor, your personality and humour, and most importantly I love love your style! They're truly a treat to watch and I feel so inspired. I don't want to do 100%(one reason being too petite and it's difficult to find fitted vintage clothing that fits me) but I love a lot of vintage silhouettes like fitted top with a line or pencil skirt, a line dresses bodycon dresses. The way you style each piece and match the colours is really on point. I always learn from you and get wowed by you. Thanks! Hope you keep making those type of videos. P.S. totally jealous of your skirt collections :p
I don't dress in vintage, but I wear dresses 96% of the time. As well, most of Australia has mild winters, except for Tasmania and maybe Victoria. Thanks for some great tips!

As a Californian, it’s actually the easiest season for me. I don’t own many nice looking shirts with short sleeves but I do own some nice overwear and such.
Hi Rachel! You are a hoot and always make my day when I watch you. I too live in Massachusetts and yes the winters here can be quite cold (especially this winter!) I am a skirt girl as well so yes I wear winter leggings(extra heavy and warm) which I got from American Apparel, and they are soo very warm. When snowing I wear boots that I got from the Bass outlet and they look like vintage Nordic boots with fur lining and they keep my legs and feet warm as well. On those cold rainy and slushy days I wear my Hunter wellies with knitted sock warmers that fold over the top and they look so cute with my long princess coat. I am trying to find more wool skirts but just haven't found too many in my size. Layering like you say is the most important way to stay warm, scarves, gloves and hats are always a must. I enjoyed your video very much, you are so cute and funny! Keep up the good work here and stay true to yourself!

I'm so glad that we don't have that cold weather where I live. The coldest it gets, and that's usually at night, is around 34F. But I do enjoy bundling up. Need a new coat after seeing yours. It is harder to dress vintage when it's cold. I can't wait for spring.

Just came across this and had to comment: my maternal grandmother told me years ago that winter time here in North East Tennessee was a colder than say in the past 40 years or so and around here the ladies actually wore flannel petticoats and like WW2 heavy cotton stockings. Plus ankle or shin high over shoes. Also rabbit fur ear muffs and hand muffs. Probably even some heavier cotton gloves that came up midway between wrist and elbow. I can remember some of those things from when I was very young, especially on women at church.
