  • History of Power Rangers is a series where Linkara looks at every season of the show and offers critical analysis!
The History of Power Rangers heads to the Lost Galaxy, where the Rangers join the mobile infantry to stop the bugs. People lived, people died, but at least we’ll always have magic tears.

Can I say that the actor portraying Skull not only was one of the highlights of the series but also went on to become a teacher is one of the coolest things ever? Seriously, nobody ever wants to talk about the positives concerning the actors when they leave the show, only the drama. Kimberly's actress was at least on more than a number of popular cop shows like Flashpoint. Heck, I seldom hear anyone talking about JDF's mma career. He may not necessarily be top tier, or he is I'm not an expert on the subject, but come on. Give some credit where it's due.

The final scene of this show hits me emotionally more that any other moment in the series, and feels more like the true finale of the Zordon Era than Countdown to Destruction did.
In Space ends the Zordon era with a cast of characters we’ve met along the way from the beginning,
Showing us the power of people.
Lost Galaxy ends the era with a entirely new group of people, save for the main villain of the last series, carrying on that legacy, not to pay homage to the ones who came before,
But because it was the right thing to do.
A story that began with five teenagers chosen for this journey because of their potential.
Ending with seven grown adults choosing to go on the journey because they knew they had to help.
Mike didn’t have to jump into that portal to fight a threat he had no knowledge of.
Leo didn’t have to take Mike’s saber.
Kai didn’t have to overcome his own stubbornness to jump into a portal to help people who broke the rules.
Damon didn’t have to trust some douche he didn’t know and help him find his friends, let alone get involved.
All of these characters are on this journey purely by choice from the start.
All of this is perfectly bookended with Kendrix saying to Karone:
“Thank You, for everything you’ve done.”
Karone, who as Astronoma once nearly decimated all of humanity in the name of conquering the world,
    Now Replying with:
“I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.”
The moral being, striving to be better than yourself is is far more fulfilling than being better than everyone else.
The ending shot, not highlighting the people, but the Galactibeasts, and the light in the sky, or the Greatness in the world waiting for us to pursue.

I mean, To Be fair the Lost Galaxy Series Decpite it has it's fair share of stuff on offer and not having a set script or the theme. The thing is it's a Continuation of Power Rangers Space Which Amazingly tho Not the Best Starts than i have seen but it went better from there on the Karone's Episode where she becomes the Pink Ranger and Owed up For the Mistakes She has done. That Teared me abit as like you said it sums up perfectly. Fittingly at the time it was 1999 when the Lost Galaxy Series came out. Their Ending was in the Middle of December so Nearly the end of the Millennium and a start of a New Millennium. Which is "The Greatness in the World waiting for us to pursue." Fits well in the End of the Millennium Which I can say possibly the greatest Power Rangers Series I have Watched is This One. It's Not the Start That Matters in The Start of a Great Series. It's About How Go On With the Character arc as the show progresses to get a well made ending Interms of the Greatness in the woeld waiting for us to pursue for the next generations living in the new life in that planet in the final episode.

This is why I like some of the more mature or darket aspects/themes of certain Power Rangers season. Like with In Space, Lost Galaxy, and other seasons, it really showed that power rangers can be a show for all ages and not just for kids. They also don't treat the younger audience like they are dumb but in a more respectful and efficient way, which I appreciate.

    • @Jdogg1022
      @Jdogg1022 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

And that's probably the biggest difference between Super Sentai and Power Rangers. While its still a kids show in Japan its not afraid to show more mature themes and even death. I have no idea why Power Rangers refuses to try to appeal to more than just kids. While I know they'd never be able to get away with showing close to anything that they've done in the Sentai, but they can tell more serious stories to appeal to both older fans and younger fans.

6:54 - From what I read, apparently the original plan for Bulk & Phenomenus was to have comedic subplots with them screwing things up Terra Venture's scientific division. But that didn't end up happening due to season's infamous production issues. We know why Skull didn't go with them, other than the fact that his character accidentally slept in. Jason Narvy decided to leave the show to go to college.
But quite frankly, considering the fact that Bulk & Phenomenus were only in 4 episodes out of the season's 45, I can't even believe they bothered. I think what might've been a better thing to do with them would be this. Have just Professor Phenomenus be the one to go to Terra Venture. When he's at the airport getting his passport approved the worker asks him, "Didn't you have two assistants working for you?" And he replies, "We mutually decided to part ways. But don't worry. I gave them quite the severance package."
Cut to a quick little scene of Bulk & Skull driving around in the Professor's old alien hunting van that they've converted into a traveling food cart to start their own business. In nobody other than that wacko professor was willing to hire them, then they'll be their own bosses. This would be the business that would eventually grow into "Club Bulkmeier's" that we see in the 10th Anniversary Episode "Forever Red".
Of course I came up with that idea with the benefit of heign sight. But I personally think that would've been a decent send-off for the characters and a decent explanation for why they're not going to be part of the show anymore. I don't know. What do you guys think?

There was a lot of dread and buildup to that moment, from limping to where he needs to go after being blasted around, then transitioning to him holding hands with his son's spirit - being at peace with his decision and being reminded of his inner nobility. He then walks to the precipice, dedicates his last moments with Zika, drops the flowers given to him, and saves the colony from the destruction he caused.
Kendrix's death was certainly worth mentioning, and Zika's child voice actor wasn't the best. But I still think the death of the 'first' Magna Defender was just as noteworthy and well-executed a moment in the series as any other.

My theory about Damon saying the ship is "a museum not a spaceship" is that he was likely told that the ship had essentially been converted to no longer fly when it was made decided to make it a museum. His job was likely just to maintain the general computer systems and stuff like the AC or whatever, rather than the engines. Which would make sense to believe since why would they still let that thing be able to fly if it was now meant to be open to the public, seems like a recipe for disaster.

Terra Venture does look like the love child of the Dark Fortress and the Astro Megaship.
    - It might have been better if they'd introduced the Galaxy Book early, perhaps having it be a relic from Maya's village that she had to take with her. That fills in the plot holes of the rangers seemingly knowing about weapons and abilities (eg, Trans daggers and Galacta Zords). The pages could just contain vague depictions of these elements so we keep the idea of the rangers still having to figure this stuff out along the way. Maybe there's a drawing of the Galacta Zords with the Trans Daggers or one that just depicts five hands reaching for the Lights of Orion.
    - This might not be popular, but I really wish they could have done Jackie Marchand's idea of using the Dairanger suits to tell the story of the ancient warriors who wielded the Quasar Sabers three thousand years ago in the conflict with Scorpious. A lot of these elements were missing their backstory. It even ties into the fact that they were already using the Dairanger morpher for the Magna Defender. It's clear the galaxy powers were incomplete and had their various pieces scattered to the wind centuries ago. Perhaps that's what the Charlie Brown scribble across their torsos symbolically means. A power set torn asunder.
    - I'd always wondered if perhaps Maya's people were not native to Mirinoi. Given their abilities and way of life, perhaps they were descendants of Animaria and travelled through a portal into another galaxy to keep the Lights of Orion/Quasar Sabers from evil.

the only POTENTIAL problem would be people connecting the dots between the design of the Dairanger suits and Tommy's White Ranger suit.
That and the fact that the DaiRangers didn't use swords.
But overall I do like the idea. Alternatively, they could have borrowed the same idea used in Gingaman. That the powers are passed down. So, they would in a sense be able to use footage of Gingaman fights and such, but have them be like "Flashbacks" in a sense detailing how the previous wielders were heroes and such.

I believe the explosions when the two Ranger teams morph tie into the "too much pink energy is dangerous," thing. It's probably not as dangerous as attempting to replicate the exact same Ranger powers, thus why you can have a whole bunch of Red Rangers transforming at once, but Zordon refused to countenance having two Mighty Morphing Pink Rangers.

After watching future PR series, I think the reason Kendrix came back at the end is that she wasn't truly dead. In PR Ninja Steel, after brody and levi's father destroyed the original power star the residual blast injured him and the prism absorb him inorder for him to heal, releasing him at the end of season one. Looking at Lost Galaxy, it seems like that is the case here especially when think about that we don't see Kendrix's actual body or death. After the blast she is in a spirit form that is absorbed into the quasar saber. And like with the father she is release from the sword at the end of the season.

It's really interesting to me seeing this series recapped now considering a couple of things that have happened with PR now.
One is of course Boom Comics showing off the origins of Terra Venture during the MMPR days, and the people behind it.
And then you have the fact that Super Megaforce missed a good opportunity to incorporate more Gokaiger elements. This series flat out had a lost galaxy, with its own rangers AND PIRATES, but they still couldn't come up with a good enough origin for the pre-zordon Era ranger teams.

"it bugs me that they just forgot Skull."
As someone who has not been invested in this series for a long time, it still bugs me, too. Like, the show frequently used people leaving the show as an excuse to touch on the way things change and life sometimes pulls us in different directions. Given that Bulk and Skull were the last of the original cast to separate, I feel like they should have done something more with that. Like maybe Skull found something that he was doing on Earth that he couldn't just leave, while Bulk struggled to find his real purpose in the adult world, so he goes off with the colony and you could have a really nice farewell between the two so that the series keeps up the tradition of final goodbyes not being a terrible thing, but just a natural part of life and always carrying with them a hope for a good future for those who move on.
Just forgetting him is an utter waste.

Linkara, you've put a lot into this series. You've kept this going strong for such a long time. You even are adding things to these video revisions. But eventually, you will get to the Wild Force review and I just want to say this. Completely ignore your old intro for that video. Don't reference it, just leave it alone. I get what it became. I get certain people are obsessed over that moment. I'm telling you to give them nothing. They are clearly just stuck in a mindset best left in 2005 forums, but yet some of them have dedicated a whole decade to being jerks. If you had that rant in 2021, significantly more people would understand. Modern audiences know that content creators can have a lot on their plate in terms of work and mental stress. The ones who, even a decade later, refuse to understand and think content creators are machines solely to make what they specifically want, are hopeless. And the ones who enable that behavior, only make the internet worse. The whole thing never even made sense anyway. Before that rant even happened, you vetted through 9 Seasons of Power Rangers in a year. I can't think of a modern TH-camr going through seasons that fast these days. These people talk in bad faith. Don't give them any more leeway by bringing it up anymore. Have a great day.

Though he'll likely be mu h less angry about it, we all know that like with the people who keep bugging him about the next episode despite him constantly telling us NOT to do, he said it because he cares like everyone else does and what he said still stands once you look past the irritation.
Besides, underneath that rant is an explanation as to how development for the show goes for him so in case anyone wonders why it takes a while, there you go. It made sense for him to complain, simply put since many folks tend to not to watch or read the updates for one reason or another.

Actually, "Journey's End", Lost Galaxy's 3 part finale was more like Endgame in my opinion since for me, this season should've been the end of Power Rangers because by the time it's finale aired on December 16, 17, and 18, the '90s (and the 20th Century overall) was coming to an end as we were about to enter a new century... Millennium if you will. Maybe PR should've been that one kid show relic of the '90s that should've stayed in the '90s.

I miss the Power Rangers era where series like In Space, Lost Galaxy, Lightspeed Rescue, Time Force and Wild Force have more of a mature theme, the rangers are actually adults or college students with a bit more character to them instead of 5, 6 or 7 teenagers with attitude, the monsters are voiced by some of my favorite voice actors like Richard Ecpar, Neil Kaplan, Derek Stephen Prince, David Lodge, Lex Lang, Kirk Thornton, Barbara Goodson, Mona Marshall, Wendee Lee, Richard Cansino, Michael Miconnhie and Late Bob Papenbrook, the villains have a lot more layer and dimension to them, the stories have some maturity to them, the music has more of an epic and yet serious tone and the battles have a lot more choreography to them.

Their suits. Charlie Brown zigzags. Thank Toei for that when they did Gingaman. They may be the least popular Ranger/Sentai suits among the fandom, but who cares? The helmets was fine. The suits could've been reworked to be less Charlie Brown-ish.

Lost Galaxy is a series that really grew on me over the years. At first I thought it was just overall okay but after rewatching many of the episodes I realize how surprisingly good the series was with very memorable episodes, an epic team up with the space rangers, very good character episodes, some really good villains with trakeena, vilamax, and deviot, and a pretty epic three part finale. Sure it has its flaws like dragging some plot like the lights of Orion arc, certain villains being meh like Furio and captain mutiny, but I really liked Lost Galaxy as a whole mostly.

I consider Magna Defender an "Extra Ranger". While his design is closer to Ninjor and the Blue Senturion in terms of Armor; he still morphs, he maintains the same "Charlie Brown" design with his belt & shoulder armor, and he still fits with the series as an animal themed swordsman.

My headcanon for the sparks has always been that the Ranger suits only LOOK like spandex but are in fact some super advanced metal (Possibly Eltarian metal) fibers that act as armor. The morphing grid's power is channeled via technology to "morph" the wearer's clothes into these suits and strengthen these metal fibers. Upon impact, a powerful enough blow will slightly damage these metal fibers, actually chipping microscopic bits from them (such as sometimes happens when some metals strike other metals), which is instantly repaired/restored by the Morphing Grid energy being channeled through their morpher devices. Enough damage can surpass the grid/morphers' capacity to effect rapid repairs which is why they only rarely have visible rips in the suits, or holes made in the helmets. (When not causing a complete demorphing.)

I said this on a mirror of this video so I'll say it here, too: my theory is that the Galactibeasts and the trans daggers are tied to the same powers as the rangers, that the trans daggers are kinda the Beasts' quasar sabers. That would explain why the daggers transform the Galactibeasts: they're morphing.

15:01 all joking aside I actually feel like this is one of the grimmer moments because well you get the impression the security forces think there aren’t rangers to help them(suddenly hearing Krillin screaming “We don’t have dragonballs, Trucks”). So the desperation is quite nice. Also I don’t know if it’s just bad acting or good acting but when the rangers do show up and the guy says “This should even the odds” I like that delivery because if you think about saying the odds have been evened is not a positive statement because it’s still acknowledging you could still lose. Also the music played before the rangers shows up is quite a good choice.
But I’m probably wrong or looking too much into it

The battlizer of this season is basically a heavy weapons platform. The boots would actually be necessary to keep him from being knocked down whenever they fired. The suit might be strong enough to protect him from the harm that the cannons would do to his body, but super strength and durability doesn't give you leverage automatically. You need flight for that from most super heroes. In this case I imagine the boots act as mag boots, sealing him to the ground whenever he's firing from the weapons platform.

Magna Defender IS a ranger, though.
He's part of the team, he has his own morpher, he has his own zord, he's counted as one in official merchandise, and he has his own Ranger key. What more do you need?
Plus, Masked Rider...yeah he was meant to be a different sort of hero apart from the Rangers since he was getting his own spin off show and wasn't connected to the Morphin Grid while, since in PR the ranger keys are a thing, plus the other factors I mentioned, it's pretty obvious Defender and other characters like him (Solaris Knight, Robo Knight, etc) are in fact connected to the grid and thus, are rangers.
I never got this whole confusion thing. Again, Masked Rider was clearly established to be his own hero not connected to the grid, while Defender and other similar characters are just by having morphers.
This whole debate is honestly stupid, imo.

Something I’m surprised the producers didn’t think of: Why not have the Lights of Orion be on other planets? That way we wouldn’t have to scratch our heads and figure out how the hell Terra Venture took cave systems and mountain ranges in its domes.
Just have Scorpius kick Furio off his ship and onto a random planet where he finds the Lights.
Hell Terra Venture has shuttles as we see in the finale they could’ve used those to scout other planets for potential colonization.
Heck since this is a post Countdown to Destruction series, it’s a little surprising they didn’t try to head for Triforia.

Regarding the sparks, I’ve always thought that they were the result of hitting hard surfaces. In universe I imagine that the monsters have pretty thick skin and the ranger suits serve practically as armor for the rangers so striking the suits or the monsters hard enough causes sparks to fly. Mind you, it doesn’t explain why sparks fly when the rangers are sometimes hit unmorphed.
On another note, knowing that Cassie was originally meant to become the Pink Galaxy Ranger after Kendrix, it seemed like “The Power of Pink” was trying to hint at it a little bit. You had Cassie get on top of Kendrix’s Galactabeast. Then in a group shot of the Galaxy rangers looking at ghost Kendrix, Cassie joins them in the group shot. Both seemed like nice details that ultimately didn’t go anywhere since Cassie ended up not joining the Galaxy Rangers.

Okay, one I'm happy we finally got to Lost Galaxy as it's my personal favorite season. Two, I like all the new addition to this version, like the whole Epilgou part to the Zordan era, even though I prefer the older one with longer clips. Three, glad to see you call the wild west world by its name Onyx. It gets named dropped a lot and is basically a hot spot for the purchase of things on the space black market, it is where Broodwing went to buy the Dino Thunder Gems in SPD. It's basically a hot spot for any business deal for anything important to the Power Rangers history, I theorize some of the villain's weapons that that guy from Beast Morphs had he just bought on Onyx because it makes sense in-universe some of that would end up there. The planet might not be as well known as say Eltar, but it's still decently up there I'd like to think. Fourth, still not a fan of these longer videos as it means I have to say all my thoughts on the video as a whole instead of spacing them out in multiple comments on different parts, making for huge comments, as I can be a pretty big windbag(LOL). And finally fifth, while I enjoy the video immensely, I'm still kind of disappointed you didn't touch on another overlaying message of Lost Galaxy, the concept of loss, sacrifice, and how people deal with it differently. As such I will give my own take. Hunker down everyone this is going to be a bit long. XD.
A lot of different characters go through the same feeling of loss throughout this season. The big three being Leo when it came to Mike at the start, the Magna Defender when it came to his son Zeka, and Treekina when it came to her father Scorpius. And they each deal with it differently.
Leo: He doesn't let it consume him. Sure he's still pretty angry and has a rivalry with Furio since he's the one who "killed" Mike and he defiantly wants to kill Furio for this. But he never lets that get the better of him and lets his anger consume him. Sure he wants revenge, but he doesn't let it consume him and blind him to everything else. And after Furio is killed, he manages to get a little closer and still move on with his life, trying to honor Mike and all the goodness he believed in by being a good Ranger and helping those in need. Even later trying to convince the Magna Defender not to let his anger consume him because he knows how it feels to lose someone, but that despite that anger you still have to temper it a bit and have some degree of control. Also, choosing not to kill Magna Defender even to save Mike because he knows it isn't right, since despite what the Magna Defender had done he knew he wasn't evil and didn't deserve it.
Magna Defender: The death of his son drove him to be consumed by revenge. Revenge had become his entire life and reason for living. Unlike Leo who could move on with his life, the Magna Defender could not. Even the death of the monster, Fish Face, that held his son captive so Scorpius could kill him and the end of his rival Treacheron, who put him in the crevice for 3000 years, wasn't enough to make him happy. Unlike Leo, this was not a healthy way of dealing with his grief. Fortunately, for him, Leo, Mike, and Zeka all managed to convince him that he could still change and go back to who he was before revenge consumed. Even going as far as to pass the Powers on to Mike so he could use the Powers for good like he did before he became consumed by revenge. Happy to be with his son again and to have someone serving the legacy of the Magna Defender with the honor and goodness it use to be.
Treekina: The death of her father drives her forward to get revenge and became a great villain in her own right. Now, I'm not 100% sure it completely consumed her like it did the Magna Defender, at least not until her merger with Devoit. It still wasn't the most healthy way of dealing with things, but it hadn't gotten as bad as it did for the Magna Defender until the merger. After that, any restraint and other feelings in her were overtaken by Devoits desire for power at all costs, no matter what she had to sacrifice, which leads her to sacrifice her entire army to gain a tactical advantage on the Rangers, even destroying two Megazords in a way no other villain has done before. And it's at this point her grief and anger has consumed her, which is why Villimax can't agree with her acts anymore, as it's no longer at least some form of honorable desire for revenge and closer, its became as bad as how the Magna Defender took things. And this anger and desire for revenge that has now consumed Treekina leaders her down a path of self-destruction.
And those are just the big three. There are numerous other examples. Kendrix's death being a sacrifice to save others and how her death affects the rest of the Rangers, as you see them going to extreme lengths to get her Saber back. They threaten to their knowledge, as we know it's actually Devoit in disguise, a defenseless alien to tell them where he sent the Saber, they pretty much throw out Zordan's rule of not escalating things. Furio blows himself up a sacrifice for what he believes in, helping the forces of evil. Devoits general character of willing to sacrifice anyone and everyone for his own goals. Leo ready to sacrifice himself to stop Treekina's evil once and for all. And many more.
Lost Galaxy, despite its flaws, is really good and a lot more complex than some give it credit for.

Well to call that part, 37:31 the Original Character Who Played has Kendrix ( Valerie Vernon Suffered From Lukemia and Had to be treated for that basically cut her scenes entirely until the very last episode of the Lost Galaxy ) While Karone ( Melody Perkins aka the Person who played as Astronemia in the Power Rangers Space Series Knew Her True Self and Decides to Help Out for the good.) Which in Hindsight Covers Nicely and is the first time and the Only time there were two Pink Rangers in the Same Series While The Original one Died in Action. Karone Took Over as the Pink Ranger and Did the Job Well. Which Had a Fitting Ending. THE FUNNY THING IS KARONE'S Character Arc was Completed Despite Being Born as a Normal Human being to the bad guys killing her parents and blames the Rangers who have killed em which Grown her into the Villain Arc. When She Starts to Realize that Her Actual Story Comes back and Literally Joins the Lost Galaxy Rangers in order to save them ( not really as she stole the Pink Quassaber. ) But the Arc is She Fought Trekina and tho Karone was going for the Mortal Death. Spiritual Kendrix Saved Her and Gave Her the Power to be the Pink Ranger. Which Amazingly after the next Episode the Characture arc was completed. DESPITE NOT BEING THE ORIGINAL SCRIPT. This Contingency of a script is where Lost Galaxy Series is the best I have seen.

Honestly, I'd say that From Lost Galaxy to Wild Force should be called the Post Zordon Era, or the Transition Era. Why Transition? Well, it feels that from Lost Galaxy onward to the start of the Disney Era feels like a transition from the original tones and neuonces from MMPR - In Space to the more child friendly-yet-mature story tellings of Lost Galaxy - Wild Force.
It doesnt hurt to actually consider the aforementioned seasons should have their own era, since Super Sentai and Kamen Rider have thier own set Eras.

Lost Galaxy was first planned to be another space-themed series to follow up the success of Power Rangers in Space, only for the crew to find that Lost Galaxy's source material Seijuu Sentai Gingaman was themed around wildlife and nature.
The Lights of Orion arc, early in the season, turned out be nearly incomprehensible because episodes were still being filmed a week before airdate.
That arc would have been followed by the Galaxy Book arc, which would have tied into the Galactabeast carrier Zords, and the Pink Galaxy Ranger Kendrix Morgan would've been heavily involved in the story. But then her actress Valerie Vernon developed leukemia, so the writers had to find a way to write her off the show to allow her medical leave and the Galaxy Book arc had to be rewritten in a hurry. Worse, the Galactabeasts themselves hardly showed up in Gingaman, so there wasn't much to work with.
The original plan was for Patricia Ja Lee (Cassie Chan, the Pink Ranger from the 2nd half of Turbo and In Space), to take over, and for that, Saban filmed a hand-off and an entire episode without Gingaman footage sometimes called "Air Force One on the Megaship", but Patricia soon walked out due to a pay dispute. She was quickly swapped in with Melody Perkins (Karone), which required two more episodes with a lot of US-exclusive footage.
Still trying to do something resembling the original plan, the final arc had Terra Venture sent to the Lost Galaxy the series had been titled after: it turned out as essentially filler, likely shoving in as much Gingaman footage as possible to save money for the finale. To add insult to injury, the series was pulled before the finale could air; it was later put out as a "special presentation" with little promotion.
It's likely that Saban suffered some serious financial losses from Lost Galaxy's production - the second season of The Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nóg had been cancelled and its budget reshuffled towards Lost Galaxy, and it still didn't help.
