History of Power Rangers is a series where Linkara looks at every season of the show and offers critical analysis!
The History of Power Rangers finally continues with the Rangers getting a worthless princess and a woman who punches new recruits. Romance and environmental terrorism all around! Wild Force concludes with everything in the red.

I feel seeing carter using his gun in the unmorphed fight of Forever Red is just an absolute fantastic example of "show don't tell", which was present throughout the entire fight. Every ranger in that scene was fighting differently, in a way that perfectly fit them as characters and how their personalities/experiences have shaped them as rangers/fighters. Tommy is a very fast agile fighter, TJ was going for powerful hits, Wes adapting and using the enemy weapons for himself, Cole's fighting still felt more "animalistic", etc. It's honestly impressive how well done it is.

For those who don’t know wild force is a series that deviates very little (in most cases) from the sentai (big differences being princess shayla, jindrax & toxica and cole) as was relatively common of some sentai the group only referred to each other by their colour, this is because they basically had to give up their civilian lives to become rangers, which is where Taylor faking her own death comes from (her counterpart similarly being an air force pilot) this gives announcing their names in the final role call a little more kick because this is the first time they really announce who they are.

But here he's putting his arms at his side, hands out like he's ready to aggressively tickle the monster into submission while making probably my favorite noise and face he's ever made. No way Linkara is gonna see this, but on the off chance he does:
I love history of power rangers because of you. When I discovered the series (and ultimately your channel) I loved your sense dry humor and wit. I liked the retrospective, learning about a show I only occasionally got to see as a kid and how it has a surprisingly devoted following to this day. But I loved it for you. Your enthusiasm, your trivia, and just your two sense about what you like in a story or music or tone and so on. This show in a lot of ways is unfiltered, sincere to you. And even if I may disagree on it, I love to hear your perspective and enthusiasm.
I’m sorry that, if even joking, your enthusiasm for this project has waned and turned more into a work project. Or even if understandably and gradually the love and creative spark just fades (we all have that it we’re honest). Especially I’m sorry that people may harass or just pester you over this project.
I fell in love with the retrospective, and frankly all content from you and others, when it comes from the heart. Sincere and from a place of caring. And while I hope that enthusiasm and love is still there (and fans be patient and respectful), I hope more you follow what makes you passionate. What brings you joy and fuels your creativity, your soul you could say.
No project like this worth your happiness and joy. After all, that is key to making this amazing. Making you amazing. :D

About Merrik's characterisation: It is possible to be a loner but still help a team. Being a loner doesn’t necessarily mean only working alone, just that you’re more content in your own company rather than the company of others. I would know being a loner myself. There’s a difference between being a loner and being antisocial, something I think too many writers forget because it’s just easier to write a “I work alone” character to add conflict. In reality one can be largely a loner but still work as part of a team if need be. While I won’t say this was the mentality of the writers on a show like Power Rangers going into some deeper psychological understanding of the mindset of a loner (especially on a season with a VERY basic environmental theme) and will chalk it up to just narrative convenience of matching the Sentai stuff, it’s still nice to have them break loner stereotypes, accidental though it might be. One can be a “lone wolf” and still have friends, heck if anything they make for better friends because they don’t often let people get close to them so when they do they keep them VERY close.
Anyway, great to see another remastered episode and seeing it so soon after the last one. Keep up the awesome work sir!

Ironically the three examples of plants 'going to war against nature' that Linkara provided are all examples of plants that humans moved to new ecosystems without the communities of organisms that have evolved to deal with those plants' quirky behaviors or capabilities, thus allowing those plants to overwhelm the healthy ecosystems they were allowed to infest. Within their own native ranges those plants are not exactly 'obliterating nature'...though when given again human assistance can be a nuisance.
Similarly I've found that typically when people complain about 'overpredation' it is one of two things. Either humans have degraded prey habitat or prey populations themselves so badly that it allows predators to become an existential crisis as they are allowed a level of over-efficiency in searching for said prey species (something I run into with game species...and landowners wanting to cull coyotes....when the real problem is you want those game species to produce offspring in a patch of habitat 10s of acres in area, an area that a predator like a coyote can grid search in a night) or we're again dealing with an introduced predator species taking out naïve populations such as with say brown snakes in Guam taking out the bird populations there or....non-flying placental mammals in Australia decimating marsupial populations. Again the predators aren't the ones 'going to war with nature' they are capitalizing upon something humans have done (either habitat fragmentation or being moved to a place where none of the prey animals understand the nature of the predator or have millions of years of evolution to deal with its tricks and strategies).
Whilst I'm sure some predator ate the last of some species somewhere in geologic history because yes there's a lot of extinction in geologic history, I would presume that predation was probably the last in the list of 'bad things' happening to that hypothetical species.... Cataclysms happen yes, and nature is not kind...
And whilst humans are 'part of nature'....we have also insulated ourselves pretty well against the worst that we've wrought...thus allowing ourselves to become somehow worse.... Whilst other cataclysms of nature are generally sourced to abiotic events (volcanism, Milankovich cycles...asteroids....etc)... We're kinda the first ecological disaster that can think and choose....which makes us different than past 'nature got mean' events. The only other example I can think of, of a biotic-sourced mass extinction was the oxygen revolution when photosynthesizers oopsy-doodled a genocide of the obligate anaerobe biosphere that was present in the early ramblings of a biological Earth....
The above being said....this show is indeed....cloying in its Gaia-hypothesis sensibilities and utopitization of nature. It is far too down the Muir side of the conservation ethic...which is well meaning but functionally impractical as it strives purely for preservation without harvest or extraction.... And whilst one can overharvest and over extract there is a conservative approach to that that can sustain the extraction and harvest. It is not easy, and requires humanity to exercise restraint, reduce our resource needs (preferably without reducing functionality but....that's a conversation in and of itself). But then, we got to 1:05:26, and you realize that the thing literally does jut out of her head, unlike Master Org, and then it seriously makes you question how she was able to keep that thing to stay put.

My personal opinion on Merrick and Zenaku at the end is that the Zenaku that is seen then is not really there it is the representation of Merrick’s wolf spirit. Somewhere in his travels Merrick meets the order of the Claw and never reveals his name to them. During this time he meets RJ and teaches him about the wolf spirit.

    • @wchan39
      @wchan39 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

Oh, that would make so much sense, especially for RJ.
See, Merrick runs into a young RJ, who is absolutely miserable due to his father's strict teachings and having to live up to his expectations and forced to learn the Shark style.
But meeting and getting to know Merrick is what leads to RJ wanting to do things his own way, learning the Wolf style instead and possibly end up developing his 'surfer dude' personality.
This ultimately causes a big fallout with his father but passes the exam to earn his master stripes.
Then, RJ left and started his own pizza business but let the Order of the Claw know that if they need his help, just call him.
Which is why before he died, Master Mao sent Casey, Theo and Lily to RJ.

@wchan39 That could alsp explain how RJ got ranger connections to make his Solar morphers later on, also explaining the friend of a friend comment he made about them since Wild Force's morphers were already made and none of the team is overly technologically inclined like we see in other teams (Danny and Alyssa have more biology based backgrounds based on thier careers and interests and Taylor might know engineering given that she's a military pilot and that kind of degree is quite common but that's not the same thing as Cam or Billy or Dr. Fairweather being shown working with ranger technology)

The Kite berates the rangers for their aleged "failure to stop pollution" IMO is very reminiscent of how Alex came back out of nowhere in Time Force and berated the Time Force rangers for the changes in timeline as well as their mission to capture Ransik. In both cases we have a related to the plot figure that was presumed to be gone is homehow alive/revived and once the reveal is made this figure is more or less being a d*ck to the rangers. But then they realize the error of their ways (Alex finding out the team has gelled well with Wes as the Red Ranger and the dedication of the Wild Force Rangers to Kite/Animus) and everyone is back on good terms. The thing that irks me in Kite's case is that it as all a part of some bizzare test - uh hello, they had plenty of time to prove their worthiness up until this point and they did.
Also, Dr. Adler's turning into Master Org makes him the first villain to be evil by pure choice rather being evil by design (like Rita, Lord Zedd, the Machine Empire, Divatox, Scorpius, Trakeena and Queen Bansheera), raised evil like it was with Astronema or as a result of a freak accident and rejection like with Ransik.
Oh, and Cole's "I'm a guardian of the earth" scream is miles better than Troy's "Robo Knight, you have a mission to fulfill"

I think the handling of talking about Medinas criminal history was done well, on average the red rangers get more focus in power rangers than most any other character, so for the lead of this series to now be a convicted murderer it would be incredibly tricky to dance around that important fact.
I’m wondering if the same will be handled about Pua Magasiva who plays Shane in the next series as his death in 2019 via suicide is itself not without controversy as he had been convicted of domestic assault an overall less serious (but still serious) charge and allegedly did so the night of his suicide, and whilst both are heavy topics for Power Rangers, it’s a good chance that everyone watching these videos and reading this comments are mature enough to understand why some of these things are necessary to talk about.
As for forever red I think an interesting way of getting both Jason and Rocky in would be simple and could work within the continuity of the series, Jason could yell “Tyrannosaurus” and Rocky “Red Ranger power” since they’re both separate powers and Mighty Morphin is a title as opposed to a power, and to distinguish them both in battle have Jason summon the Dragon shield implying that he retained it after Tommy lost those powers.
Also I met Steve Cardenas and actually asked about forever red and according to him he was asked to Take part and he was ready to do so, and they then filmed without him and didn’t give much time to respond, although there were plans to feature him anyway even with Jason, those being that he was going to be Tommy’s Butler and heavily imply he was still Zeo Ranger III Blue, as he never gave up those powers

With all future controversies aside, Wild Force is a pretty good season and it very well could've been a LOT better if they didn't have to go through some "growing pains" after having to transition to another parent company. Don't get me wrong, certain ideas are pretty cool like the zords being more than just giant robots, the hierarchy present in the orgs being part of the monster's designs, & my personal favorite, Merrik being a "corrupted champion" that later has to struggle w/ a clear sense of guilt over his actions when he wasn't in control.
While there's a lot more good things I want to talk about there's also quite a few plot inconveniences, some things that didn't age well due to the time it came out, & probably a lot more that I can't see through my rose-colored nostalgia goggles. Overall, I think the season is in the top 10 of the entire franchise (though I'm not sure how hard that is considering there's only about 25 or so seasons, some of which are "Super" seasons which are basically only the 2nd half of another season) but there are still quite a few that I'd rank far higher. Still a pretty cool & crazy finale though, 8/10 could've been less hammy

9:26-That random narrator is voiced by Michael McConnohie whose done a lot of anime/video game voice overs like Uther from World of Warcraft, Astaroth from Soul Calibur, Kano from Mortal Kombat 9 and X, Enma from Naruto and Emperor Charles from Code Geass. He’s also done a few monster voice overs in Power Rangers during the Fox Kids Era.

The backstory of the main villain's (Master Org) of this series makes him became the very first example of an incel on fictional media before the word incel became a well known term on the internet (Thanks to a certain website I know for that info). No, I think calling Benta out for the banner thing is warranted. We have to be aware of these things.
I'll defend CGI tooth and nail, especially since as the technology has improved, I'd argue that the rubber suits and blocky costumes are ever less useful and practical. I'd also argue that it could better enable Power Rangers to grow more separate and distinct from the Sentais. Creating original all American Zords. Possibly even creating a Power Rangers show that has no source Sentai. Besides, animation is not bound the same way practical effects, costumes, and actors in live action are. Or you could be weird and inflict the illusion of those limitations on an animated show like say, Gridman. That's also a thing. For some reason. Ultimately it comes down to the quality, direction, and implementation of the animation.
I'm not sure why, but the red zord orb initially reminded me of a doomsday device's catalyst from one of the pokemon movies. The one in not Venice.
I don't mind a cell phone morpher per say, but the way this one is held and used to morph is dumb. Not quite as dumb as pull trigger to morph and spin cylinder to shoot, but it just looks so awkward. Depending on the series, I think there's an argument to be made for making the morphers more discreet and less likely to draw attention. I also feel that it's too technological for this season from what you've mentioned about it in other videos and the clear emphasis on the animal and magical aspects of the technomagic animals that zords so often are. Not to mention that the first villains have more mechanical designs.
"Every regulation is written in blood" And really poor life choices. Like, people shouldn't have to be told not to climb on old, damaged monuments or take chunks out of an ancient city, but here we are.
Well clearly the orgs were from aliens dumping their garbage because the past was perfect and never bad and we should just regress to whatever I say was the golden age. Blech! The past sucked, and more people need to acknowledge that.
So a giant streamlined pair of a fireclaw and frostclaw? Horizon Zero Dawn joke. You fight robotic fire grizzly in Yellowstone in the DLC, and it is substantially meaner than the ice bear robot that has a grizzly build despite the polar bear association. Oh and the fire grizzly is actually more a volcano grizzly.
I don't know whether the idea of Princess Sheila reading industry catalogues and fashion magazines or modern team jackets existing in ancient times is funnier. Maybe it's like how the Mighty Morphing powers took on local characteristics in the days of the old west, but that's not as fun.
I'm going to guess that the writers either realized that they couldn't have good emotional scenes with villains shrunken as action figures, or that freezing someone in that state for the duration of their sentence is actually inhumane and unproductive. If they're aware in that state, it's probably torture, if not, then there is neither punishment nor redemption. Just a pause button while the world around them changes.
Nice to finally see why you Reinforcements From the Future in such high regard. A pity that a certain video platform's krriffing policies make further demonstration untenable.
"Nature is not some perfect and harmonious utopia in and of itself!" Thank you. Also there's the point that seeing humanity and nature as separate can lead us to underestimate the consequences. If we're gone, or industry will collapse into a hideous mess, nuclear power plants in particular. And on the other end, deluding ourselves into thinking that an environmental collapse is something we can shrug off. Mind you, the tech advocate in me says we could potentially survive, but that's a pretty sucky state of survival with incalculable losses.
"where science dies due to alcohol poisoning."
Forever Red sounds pretty great, and we know the real reason why only the reds were summoned. They are the leaders and get the most toys and powers outside of the 6th* rangers. I do wish that Disney was a bit less stingy here.
    That's a messy finale.
Ah, Zacker showing some early warnings. This is the answer wo why dispassionate business types or at least more subdued creative supervisors are needed. To tell creators when to dial it back.

I mean, the problem with Tzachor is that he is such a Sentai fanboy. Nothing is wrong with that in and of itself, but Tzachor is the type to not make necessary changes to fix issues that can arise in translation or comply with American censors or certain ideas that don’t translate well, or change things that don’t work here because of other changes that he made to try to appeal to kids and parents. Case in point, Mike’s character in Samurai. His Japanese counterpart was constantly rebellious and opposing the red ranger and others, so in the episode where he is given command of the beetle Zord, his first attempt where he takes it takes on a different tone. In the Sentai, it’s part of a continuing pattern of behavior that shows green as irresponsible and not mature enough to take the power. In Power Rangers, Mike is yet another goody goody like the others, so this comes out of nowhere. Tzachor wasn’t willing to change things, making things worse.

For the Cell Phone morphers, it's surprisingly not as common as you think. Zhane from In Space, Wild Force, Mystic Force (Core Team only), Operation Overdrive (Core Team only), RPM (Red/Blue/Yellow), Samurai, Robo Knight (for switching between Zord and Regular form) and Super Megaforce. @@FixTheWi-Fi The Samurai one's a weird case. Lauren's was the calligraphy brush (It was actually one of the ones used in Shinkenger), while the others used theirs more like they were light writing since they swapped out the brush for a laser pointer. Antonio's was entirely digital, effectively texting to use his symbols. Either way though, it was one of the cases where they looked like phones, but mostly weren't used as such to morph (Antonio being the exception there).
The Sentai version of the Gold Samurai Morpher, the Sushi Changer, was even more unique. Genta (Antonio's counterpart) had designed it to pair up with his foldable secret discs (the ones he used to morph or call his zords). When one of those discs was folded up and placed on the top of the Sushi Changer while it was closed, the whole thing was designed to look like a piece of nigiri sushi.

If there's ever a reboot of Power Rangers like Hasbro seems to want to do after Cosmic Fury... well, firstly, I think that's probably a bad idea, but secondly, *if* they're going to do it, I wish they'd compress some of the stuff that happened in the ancient past down a bit. A lot of these events feel like they should be connected - the great battle where the Galactabeasts lost their powers, the war between Orgs and Animaria, the Beast War, etc. etc. - but besides the connection between Lost Galaxy and Wild Force's timelines, the timescale's all wrong.

The last episode of the Animus arc is tainted by Animus' actions, but I do like the message behind it that was very relevant at the time and I'd say is even more relevant now: Humans are not inhertiently evil. Most humans do care about the world around them and want to save it. Humans moreso suffer from apathy and short term memory, they don't necessarily care about things until they can no longer ignore the consequences (by which point it may already be too late to do more than limit the damage).

My Personal feeling on why Merrick felt responsible for Zen-Ali’s actions and guilt is actually two fold:
    - One Zen-Aku’s initial actions when he first put on the mask that resulted in so much damage and death,
    - and second, and more crucially, it is the fact the rangers are so empathetic and kind, and willing to forgive him, and allow him back into the group that makes it worse. He feels so much shame, anger and self hatred for what was done because he chose to put on the mask, and the rangers forgive him without a second thought. That easiness to forgive it making it all that much worse. This being a point that a friend of mine who served in the army said he went through himself, that guilt at actions outside of his control and being one of those to come back from a tour when others didn’t and the forgiveness he got from families he even though there was nothing truly to forgive made the guilt worse

It's also interesting how (at least based on what I see on this HOPR and what I remember of Wild Force), how much there's an undercurrent of what exactly it means to be a human, what humanity means to beings that are literally born from something "evil" and how it can change them.
11:16 The Org shown in here claims that he and other Orgs only exist to wreak havoc and cause destruction, yet this stands in stark contrast to Orgs like Jindrax, Toxica, and Zen Aku.
The latter 3 are prime examples of being extremely human in their mindset and methods, expressing complex behaviors and beliefs that most other Orgs don't show, can care deeply for others and make sacrifices for others despite their supposed nature as "beings of destruction", and the latter 3 ultimately change towards the side of good and decency to varying degrees. It kinda makes you wonder just how much of the destructiveness of Orgs is inherent to their nature, and how much of it is due to them simply being conditioned into thinking like this, being evil because they've never bothered to try to go beyond that, and thus rendering them "heartless", while humanity would eventually give them a heart. And I'd say this has precedence, given that Jindrax and Toxica are noted to have hidden themselves among humans, and are decidedly some of the most human in their behavior, while Zen Aku was the result of having his identity mixed with Merrick's for the longest time, and it could be argued that this would probably also have a humanizing effect on him.
By stark contrast, there's also a very strong showing of how humans to varying degrees can choose to express their darkest impulses, to abandon their humanity or express the worst aspects of humanity that makes them more vile than any Org, which is expressed through Viktor Adler (aka, Master Org's current form). All of his vile actions being born from his twisted sense of entitlement and inability to face how many of his own misfortunes were due to circumstances that had nothing to do with the people he blamed. Cole's mom didn't know he wanted to marry her, and yet he chose to blame her for it, and his work being underappreciated was due to the reporter, not his friends' accomplishments. And this rotten sense of entitlement and vengefulness resulted in him becoming one of the most monstrous characters in Power Rangers, basically causing destruction and misery for extremely disproportionate reasons.
It also kinda puts him in stark contrast to Cole, who honestly has every reason to want to destroy Master Org for how much misery he's caused to him, but ultimately due to finding the value in his life outside of that hypothetical vengeance, and the support of others, he ultimately can move on from that personal tragedy in a way that Viktor Adler refuses to do.
EDIT: There's also an element of identity as well, with Cole trying to find his heritage, Taylor denying her past as an airforce pilot, Merrick's own identity issues, Jindrax and Toxica and Zen Aku's duality between their human behavior and their Org heritage, and so forth. A big part of this is built on them facing or at least confronting these identity problems, with the rangers declaration of who they are at the end against Master Org being a major culmination of this.
And I especially think this also provides more insight into Master Org as well, because it can be argued that when he killed Cole's parents, he also likely assumed the Master Org identity as a means to avoid facing what he really was: a bitter broken old man who fucked up his own life and destroyed the only people who cared for him. His whole Org persona was his way of denying his past identity, his own humanity and the consequences of his own actions and cruelty.

As someone who just recently rewatched “The Princess and the Frog”, I'm honestly confident in saying that the scene at 1:06:55 predates Doctor Faciler’s death. If you're unsure what I'm referring to, I'm talking about the protagonist indirectly causing the villain’s death- Tiana smashing Faciler's voodoo charm compared to Cole shooting Toxica with the jungle blaster completely by accident. The main difference is that while Faciler got dragged to hell, here, Toxica gets “vaporized” to hell. Plus, Jindrax eventually brought Toxica back to life while Faciler remains dead. And if you do not believe me, the cutaway gag at 1:08:31 proves my point.

Part of it was aging out of the target demographic (though I really enjoyed *Time Force* so it wasn't just that), part of it was the channel hop meaning I had trouble following it, and part of it was I was just really unimpressed and underwhelmed by the story and acting in the few episodes I did see, mostly the opening with Cole and co. and the sixth ranger story arc, where I cottoned on to what was going on pretty quick, missed half the episodes, and was equally unimpressed with the conclusion.
This was a nice catharsis. I didn't hate it, exactly, either, so it's not like I want to see it eviscerated and don't want to hear about how it was great actually and I was just too stupid to appreciate it. So it's nice hearing someone enjoy something I didn't more than I did. (Though the villain's acting kind of kills the ending for me, and his lack of depth and nuance was a hard shift after Frax and, to a point, Ransik.)

In Forever Red the big line up of all the characters together is amazing, although having seen the sentai series it's hard to ignore that this shows all the adapted seasons.....and yet lacks the DaiRanger Red costume.

As someone going through Digimon...yeah Disney buying Saban did a lot of weird things for these shows.

Honestly, one of the things that makes Reinforcements From The Future so impressive is that it is something completely original to the American side of things. There was never any sort of team-up between TimeRanger and GaoRanger (GaoRanger instead doing an anniversary movie where they fought alongside what would have been Lost Galaxy Blue, In Space Pink, Lightspeed Yellow, and two they would have had to explain or replace from pre-ZyuRanger teams if they had decided to use that footage at all).
So Wild Force was basically free to do whatever it wanted as far as plot and action went. The only downside was no climactic mecha battle with the two Megazords, since the US production didn't have those suits, but even then it's still great.

Well we did get our own anniversary episode this season too and honestly I think team up episodes for Power rangers are much better when there's no sentai footage involved. Because as you said it means they can do their own thing completely and not have to work around the footage they have. Especially when sometimes that footage is from a movie instead of a 22 minute episode.

Bear in mind Disney was going to end production after this season and probably was OK for the Renforcements from the Future but not originally for Forever Red.

Another small downside was not having Jindrax and Toxica in part 2.
