  • Join Ian Royle as he introduces us to a young mum Emma Shaw, who's on the market for a newer car, preferably something more roomy, and has a maximum budget of £7,000. Richard Hammond explains that you don't necessarily have to buy a normal medium sized car, and that there are alternatives on the market, such as the Land Rover Defender, as he explains why.
    [This clip is from Used Car Heaven: Series 2, Ep. 1, originally aired 26/03/2002. The full episode can be watched here: • Used Car Heaven: Seaso... ]

    We had a two or three over the years, growing up, and were immensely proud of them. We were complete nerds, but our Land Rover was brilliantly cool to be seen in and we didn't know any differently when it comes to "luxury", so its wipe-down military interior was great for kids.

    Cool looking beast but let's face it, the Chevy Blazer is a better vehicle in every category and the fact that it cost less up front and less to operate/maintain means the only justifications for owning the Defender are looks and "pedigree." Well, as for me, I'd rather sacrifice the "pedigree" and pocket the cash difference, which is enough to buy a brand new Yamaha WR 250 and enough gasoline to fuel both the Blazer and WR for decades and still have enough left over for spare parts and maintenance. So...

    • @oldcargeezer
      @oldcargeezer 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed, you have a point. As l said, it was never designed as a car, it was designed as a working vehicle for farmers.
      People use them as cars for various reasons, the newer ones are better but still no Audi/BMW etc.
      Land Rover produced the Discovery and Range Rover for those people who wanted tbe best of both worlds.
      On paper the Defender makes a terrible car, but l still prefer driving it to my BMW. It's just a thing....and not for everybody.

    An aluminium bodied, steel framed car, designed for off-roading and an absolute death-trap in a crash? Good solution for a family romp-around vehicle.
    Also who gives a shit about the fuel economy, right? It's not like you have to consider money when you're buying a family car.
