Jakob Holland, no it wasn’t. That’s not a factory winch and, it didn’t even run under the load of the engine. It ran under a secondary engine in the rear that tilted with angle of the incline. That’s just stupid.
The built in winch wasnt able to pull this off.It was too short on cable. It too was modified. They needed a bigger one to have enough cable to get him to the top. He even says it in the beginning.

I like how everyone else has a helmet and safety gear. I guess they knew it wouldn't matter for Hammond. I *am* curious what safety stuff they had in place that we couldn't see. Extra cable?
The cable is multi-stranded. If one strand had snapped, or even come close, they would've stopped winching and brought in a crane or helicopter or something to extract it.
I was expecting the Rivers own engine to do the work. He should have gone up further, exited the vehicle and released the cable. That would have been entertaining.
@@sebastiaandewit159 Actually, the normal force is what's most important here. The steeper you try to climb, the less grip your tires have simply because a smaller amount of force is holding the tire onto the surface you are driving on. If you go too steep, the tires lose all grip and you fall down. As for the stunt cars that do loop-de-loops, those are specially shaped ramps to maintain a minimum amount of normal force based on the centrifugal force created by the car changing direction (upward in this case).
high speed and with enough downforce you could theoretically do it. That being said that’s highly unlikely. However, doing it with wench has nothing to do with rover, you might as well attach a cart to the wench and you ll have the same results
8.05 that was pure pain i saw. What he went through most every one on earth hasnt gone through. And he was trash talked and disrespected. And what deserves the most praise is how he took that. I dont know what i would do in his shoes but it would probably have something too do with losing my job.
What does this have to do with the Land Rover?! You could hook a fiat 500 on a winch and have that one pulled up just as well....sorry but thats boring.
+3XX0N Watch the episode before you post something like that +Sparx632 the advert showed a rover pulling itself up a dam with its own winch, yet in reality they pulled it up with a winch attached to the dam out of shot of the camera. Here hamster's doing what they didn't, pulling himself up on his own winch
*reads comments* Wait, multiple people think it would somehow be possible to just drive up a dam without the aid of a winch? Watch fewer movies, guys. You can't defy physics by gurning and being really strong.
This was really poorly edited by the BBC but you can tell they didnt actually take the risks portrayed. When Hammond is going up the side of the dam look at the steps behind him.. they barely get smaller which would be the case as he gets further away from them but at one point he is almost on them and they make it sound like he is shitting it when in fact he is barely off the ground. Take a look.
The Steps infact are extremely big. Look at the different angles, particularly the one at 4:00. You can tell that the steps are pretty huge. There is also an angle at 6:18 where you can see the steps from the rear of the vehicle with people standing close by to them. Because of the sheer scale, it looks like they don't change much in size. It may still be falsified, but if it is, the editing is rather decent.
I take it you dont fully understand camera angles, go to coopers hill for example and it looks step but the camera can never really show you what it feels like to be in a situation.
It would be easier on the winch cause it is so much lighter. Also, a fuel injected engine would run at that angle. So my daily driver stock 01 civic I bought for $600 is perfect. Add that same winch with some structural bracing and I am ready to go. Also I would hook the winch where I could go over the top. Still good entertainment
+Evan Moon actually it depends on where the fuel pump picks up the fuel and where the oil pickup is. If you don't get fuel the engine dies if you don't get oil the engine seizes
Ya I noticed that. At the end it does look like he was shot from the top... but it seems like a huge insurance liability to have the star do this. I'm not convinced he was actually in it.
He is traveling vertically, of course you'd only see the same spot on the ground. If you look really closely, you can also see the movements of the car
So they didn't drive it, they just pulled it up with a winch. So what? That's hardly dependent on Land Rover being a well built vehicle. it's just up to the winch

laugh track is painfully obvious at the end there. nobody's laughing!
Well spotted sir!
true, if you look in the background no one is laughing
It's top gear: it's all bollocks!
No shit, it's meant to be.
.
In true Top Gear style, "Always never an easy ride" with them.
I like how everyone else has a helmet and safety gear. I guess they knew it wouldn't matter for Hammond.
I *am* curious what safety stuff they had in place that we couldn't see. Extra cable?
They would have to have edited it out
What kind of safety equipment you need when you are in a elevator? There's nothing dangerous here.
@@MyNotSoHumbleOpinion elevators have a ton of safety gear in their design (more cables than needed, runaway brakes, etc.)
Michael Hartzell
he couldn't do go further the cable was no atachd good and he couldn't do it

It's a "Rover",not a "River". Just saying.
if you say "i expected him to deive up, without a winch" have you taken any science classes in your entire life?
Speed is everything.
@@sebastiaandewit159 I have a mental image of Jeremy shouting "Speeeeeeeed" and crashing head on into the dam.
Can’t believe people are complaining about it being winched up, we could have lost Richard that day. So much tension, so good!
Good thing they learnt their lesson and never made hammond do anything dangerous ever again
Seeing this I get goosebumps already. I have Acrophobia perhaps that I am extremely scared of a high place like this.
Feels
like jurassic park
hope they make a huge badass park like that one day
Manolo 717 yep, but there aren't any dinosaurs exist 😂 They could use graphics
Ade ka yea it felt like jp cus of the sounds and the look.. I felt like it would snap and he would jump out and grab the end of the cable
Gotta admit, I was a bit disappointed when I realized the winch was carrying the truck… but hey physics and stuff.
This makes me feel nervous just watching...
What does this have to do with the Land Rover?! You could hook a fiat 500 on a winch and have that one pulled up just as well....sorry but thats boring.
And risk his life for nothing
It's about the advert he kept referencing, I assume they drove a Landrover up a dam in that and so Top Gear did the same.
+3XX0N Watch the episode before you post something like that
+Sparx632 the advert showed a rover pulling itself up a dam with its own winch, yet in reality they pulled it up with a winch attached to the dam out of shot of the camera. Here hamster's doing what they didn't, pulling himself up on his own winch
Thanks for typing what i wanted to say ;-) They could have attached a seat and that winch to a concrete block and achieved the same thing.
+iain rickwood It's still an arbitrary and pointless exercise in Dramatical TeeVee production. :/
i would've pissed my pants allll the way up
playyboy nyc same here
And shit my pants all the way down 😂
Why is all this old top gear so much better
More like towing a steel cage up a dam.
"I am depending so much on things made by other people."
5:53 🤕
Probably better off that way too, as other people are better at making those things he depends on
So are you...
@@TampaSupastar22 no shit ....and so are you ....
Richard “Tungsten Balls” Hammond
With a cable and winch? You could pull up a Sherman tank with the right winch.
Richard you're a brave man. No way could I have done that. Absolutely terrifying if that cable had broke... not a nice way to go!
*reads comments*
Wait, multiple people think it would somehow be possible to just drive up a dam without the aid of a winch?
Watch fewer movies, guys. You can't defy physics by gurning and being really strong.
This was really poorly edited by the BBC but you can tell they didnt actually take the risks portrayed. When Hammond is going up the side of the dam look at the steps behind him.. they barely get smaller which would be the case as he gets further away from them but at one point he is almost on them and they make it sound like he is shitting it when in fact he is barely off the ground. Take a look.
I caught that too
The Steps infact are extremely big.
Best series of Top Gear 👍👍👍
you could do this with a honda civic
It would be easier on the winch cause it is so much lighter. Also, a fuel injected engine would run at that angle. So my daily driver stock 01 civic I bought for $600 is perfect. Add that same winch with some structural bracing and I am ready to go.
Also I would hook the winch where I could go over the top. Still good entertainment
+Evan Moon actually it depends on where the fuel pump picks up the fuel and where the oil pickup is. If you don't get fuel the engine dies if you don't get oil the engine seizes
VTECH POWER!
+Evan Moon you paid $600 for a 01 civic
agree ... does the winch come with the land rover or not ????
I wish time could run backwards, one program that glued me to television 😭😭😭😭😭
they might as well have put it in a c5, and called it a flying land rover
C4
lol
a 2nd winch to connect to a secondary point when at the top, take the slack off the 1st and reposition, then use both to clear the top.
Climbing? Pulled up. -.-
The audience laughs but non of them are laughing
I like how everytime they film Hammond he's at the same spot, just look at the background
Just watching Hugh Jackman driving Land Rover over dam.
So they didn't drive it, they just pulled it up with a winch. So what? That's hardly dependent on Land Rover being a well built vehicle. it's just up to the winch
It's a reference to an old range rover advert where it pulled itself up a dam with it's winch, to pay homage to this they replicated it.
