31 Hidden Damage. Cracked Keel Catamaran Repair.

- Back in Florida working on the boat, one of the major things left to fix was the crack in the keel, which reveals some hidden damage.

I have had numerous occassions to advise owners regarding keel repairs after arguments with coral but this is the first time I have ever seen a view from the inside of the keel assembly. You and Capt. Kirk bravely go where no man has gone before. Good work.

Bryan, I can see that the amount of work you do is amazing. Please don't get discouraged while working on this boat. One day there will be a great feeling of joy as you smile sitting on this boat somewhere have a nice cool drink of whatever you drink. I really enjoy watching you as well as "Good, Bad and Ugly". You guys are keeping the right amount of having a good time and trying to keep the engineering down to a level that you can handle. Be safe while you are working alone. Hi Bryan,
I had a boat building business with my Dad here in Australia. We use to build 30ft fibreglass centre consoles and sport boats. (Like your Miami go fast boats).
I’m probably late to the party as only found your channel recently, but thought to mention in case it helps someone else doing a similar crack repair like seen here on the keel. By starting your lay up of the laminate with the small pieces first, then allowing the next larger piece to go on and overlap by say 3/4 of an inch, then each layer has an edge bonded to the original laminate. It makes for a stronger repair.
In areas where there is possibly a little moisture still in the laminate like on the bottom edge of your keel, dabbing a cloth soaked in acetone will help to remove moisture from the laminate as the acetone evaporates, carrying away the moisture with it (great for when repairing osmosis blisters that you grind out and re-glass like Bryan is doing here). Sure it won’t remove all the moisture from further into the laminate, but it will allow you to get the best bond to those exposed outer areas you are repairing.
When doing the “tabbing” we always used a cove of filler before applying the layers of glass. We used a mix of resin and micro balloons filler powder to mix up a “bog”. You applied it along the 90 degree material joint with a 2-3 inch putty knife. Then we used a short 5” off cut of plastic electrical conduit pipe. You run the pipe end edge along the filler and it leaves a perfect quarter round cove shape (like a ceiling cornice does on a houses ceiling edge). You then apply a narrow strip of glass that overlaps each side of the cove edge onto both pieces of the 90 degree bond. Then the next layer of glass is wider again and so on. This allows each of your layers of glass or “tabs” to bond directly to the original laminate.
I’d also recommend using a bristle roller or smaller grooved aluminium roller used for rolling out the glass after resining it, as this ensures all the air is rolled out which makes a neat strong bond.
When you finish glassing, I recommend placing all your glassing tools in a tall bucket, with a sealing lid, with say 6” of acetone in it. Wipe the worst off onto a rag and just drop it in. That way they are ready to go next time you need them. Even the wooly glassing roller covers can be reused in this way if of a reasonable quality. Place the lid on the bucket and can sit for weeks, no problem. You will be surprised how “dirty the acetone can get in the bucket and the glassing tools are ready to use with minimal cleaning effort such as a quick wipe with a rag.
Just a couple of tips that I hope make sense and I hope you or someone else may be able to use.

Great job bryan. For every problem a solution ! This is the way when you are repairing a boat. , no matter how large.
We also had a crack in our hull under the v berth, we think because the glue to the bulkhead that supported the water tank created a hard spot and a full water tank pounding into waves put uneven force on the hull. We didn't know what caused the crack until we had finished grinding, we are so lucky to learn though you!

The fiber glass layers should always be applied from small to large because if the first layer doesn't stick wel (for whatever reason) you can lose everything.

Getting to the inside of the keel looks like a job for a contortionist! Good luck on that one. Your work looks great, and you are doing the ultimate recycling. Except for you, that boat would have been cut up and thrown in a landfill.
