  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 11 มี.ค. 2022
  • I'm camping in my RV in Florida working on the boat, I make a huge hole in my boat and then fix it. My Mom comes to visit to make sure I'm doing everything right.
Thanks for joining my on my adventure as I restore a hurricane damaged PDQ Antares 44 Catamaran. Come along as I learn about fiberglass repairs, and everything else I need to know to live my dream and cruise the world.
    Special Thanks to:

It sounds like everyone liked your mom just as I did. That’s what I call quality time together. When she is gone, many years from now, you can watch this video with pride.

Still here Bryan. You've become a master at fiberglass. I really liked having your curious mom. Not all moms take an interest in their adult children's projects. She loves you.

Loved the questions from your mom. I have watched from the beginning. I started with Parlay revival. and then found your Channel. I found it interesting that you built your own house. I did the same in my late 20's. Not sure why I am so obsessed with the sailing stuff as I am a bit terrified of the Ocean. But watching you work through this project has been weirdly satisfying. Keep up the great work. Cannot wait to see how this boat comes out.

I found the questions and responses on the glassing process while you were working very informative. I agree with your mom that you have accomplished a considerable amount on the boat. Glad to see that you are still keeping both the work on the boat and documenting the entire process. I can only imagine how difficult it is to document the work and continue to accomplish the repairs.

At some point in time with your reno of this cat, you may be looking at and evaluating your engines and thought I give you some info that may prove useful.
Several years back I had a problem with my 4 cyl gas volvo penta alum head exhaust ports. The exhaust gas had destroyed part of the opening and exhaust was escaping with a pop pop pop sound. Rather than taking head off, having it welded or getting a new one, I used a product called Pyro Putty. Co has version for aluminum and steel and this 2 part product (not epoxy) is good to 2000-2800 deg F. Mix parts, becomes paste, put it on damaged parts, file to shape when hardened and it has worked fine for 3+ yrs. 6 oz can costs around $70. It can't be used where water is present, but does stand up to exhaust heat very well. Just thought I'd mention for future reference.

Wet fillets are always better in every regard. Your bonds are chemical, not mechanical. You can help yourself with timing by using a slow cure system. I have a fast hardener and a slow hardener that I use with the same resin system, depending on the cure time I want. With my system, the manufacturer even allows the mixing of the fast and slow to adjust cure times as well. The slow is about 4 hours of pot life, and the slow is about 20 minutes. A 70 slow and 30 fast is about 90 minutes of pot life. The cure time is still about 12 to 14 hours of cure to 95% hardening with both hardeners. Try using slow for your fillets. It will give you all the time you need to layup your BID tapes.

Just in case you see, you said the only way you to clean epoxie is acetone. Simple vinegar is also a quick cheap method of cleaning before it's set. A quick rinse with vinegar disrupts the cross linking process and then you can clean up the resulting goo with soap and water. Great on hands, save a shirt that wasn't quite ready for the bin keep a bucket handy you can drop your tools in wh n you start cleanup.
