  • Fiberglass repair is like sculpture. Can I get the boat to look good again? Can I get it together enough to move from Florida to Maryland?
Thanks for joining my on my adventure as I restore a hurricane damaged PDQ Antares 44 Catamaran. Come along as I learn about fiberglass repairs, and everything else I need to know to live my dream and cruise the world.
    Special Thanks to:

They say if you love your job you never work a day in your life. Your advice is so true, you don't have to love it but it really helps if you actually enjoy working with the materials etc. I would add that it really helps if you have plan and your are reasonably organised. My brother bought a beautiful fixer upper, it didn't really need an awful lot doing to get it ready sail oceans. Four years later having spent a small fortune he has given up and bought another boat on which he has promptly ripped off the old teak deck and now trying to get the deck refinished. He's my brother and I love him but he is hopeless. I wish he spent more time watching channels like yours.

Yup. I have to start with small jobs that I can actually finish within two days and then the bigger ones don’t seem so daunting half way through.

The weather is such a catch 22. Florida gets too hot in the summer and Maryland is so cold in the winter. Fiberglass, paint and glue can take the heat, but not the cold. Tough call.

glad to see you Bryan . your getting there . while you have the boat dry docked , id get all the exterior finished and then do everything so you can at least get it up to maryland and finish the interior at home . if the exteriors done it can be kept in the water without having to pull it back out . you've been doing a great job and looks awesome so far . your very meticulous with your repairs but down the road you'll have no worries . 😊

I have now seen all of the video's, and have enjoyed them all. I take that you are on the east coast of Florida. I have a second home on the west coast. But as I near retirement I have a passion for learning how to sail. But my wife does not have enough adventure in her to do anything big so I'm just going to have to settle for being a weekend sailor. But I still need some experience!!!!

As you said, just like to fix stuff. Guess that is why we have watched from the beginning. Actually miss the channel a lot when you do not post. It has been an amazing rebuild. I actually have made some changes to my boat from the inspiration and know how gathered here. Moved my companion way out 6 inches and made room inside for movable stairs that made excellent access to the engine.

Hope you get the boat home before summers over to work on it up there. When you first started I did think your boat building skills were a bit of a joke and soon you'd stop making videos and write the project off, but through your hard work and perseverance I can see a nice boat emerging out of the quagmire. Keep at it we are watching with great interest. Cheers

If you need a sail while you're up here in Maryland, give me a shout. I have a C&C 30 that was a project and is coming along nicely. She is about 20 minutes north of Annapolis. I also have the summer mostly off, should you decide to bring yours up this summer and need a hand.

    Gday Bryan,
I’m very impressed with your attention to detail, for instance chasing those cracks to get the best bond on the side deck.
I also really appreciate you explaining about your cnc router in an episode or two back. That’s something new to me and what a time saver over pattern making if you have the skill. Hats off to the original designers too for supplying you with the cad info on the various parts. That speaks volumes for them. So many designer/builders wouldn’t do that. Wow, what class individuals they are.
I better get to bed or there will be no work on my projects tomorrow 😁
    Cheers 🍻

James Baldwin of atomvoyages owned an F27 and sold it and bought an F24 which he recently refit which resulted in some nice YT videos. You might consider contacting him regarding the differences in the 24 and 27 trimarans. Generally, his knowledge and skill regarding sailing, cruising and refits is very high.

Bear in mind Bryan, if you brought her to Maryland now you won’t be able to grind her without full vacuuming of all your dust. I know that because I live in Maryland and work for a yard. The local counties won’t let you grind in the open like this for very long! Although I’d love to come help you at your house in Maryland.

Thinking aloud I would move/keep the boat where it is easier to work and to achieve best results. I guess all the exterior would be easier to finish while it is in the dry. The rest, interior, navigations systems, electrics can be finish anywhere. But well, I don´t have a boat, so take my opinion with a pinch of salt :D

Great video Bryan - I always enjoy how informative your videos are .. between you and Colin I have increased my knowledge 10 fold .. I’d have to say the time spent traveling between Maryland and Fla could be better spent on the resto-work and I would not be the guessing game of weather cooperating with you - if it’s nice - go work on the boat- if it’s not, do your normal day to day stuff..
plus if your kids wanna chip-in and learn something they could .
The draw back is parts and supplies in Fla are plentiful- not so sure about Maryland but maybe you can find some sponsors up there … just a thought.
Keep the videos coming and I’ll keep watching from land locked mid-Ga .

The thing is that most likely he would only be able to work on the boat during the summer in Maryland. In Florida he could work on it through the winter, even if only a week or so a month. So like he was saying, if he cannot get it up to Maryland until after the summer, it really makes no sense, because it will sit there over the winter because he cannot work on it. Might as leave it in Florida until next spring, if he can continue making the trips down to work on it during the winter.

Nice work and good advice... The area on the deck where there was the crack you are repairing there is non skid. When you are all done, will you try to repair the non-skid or will it be smooth? and if smooth, how will you transition from non skid to smooth? Thanks
