  • How to install Longtube Headers LS1 Trans Am Firebird Camaro WS6 SS
    New video I made on how I installed headers on my 2002 WS6 Trans Am. During the video I talked about using a section of coolant hose between y-pipe and floor. I did this but didn't take a video(dumb I know) Before doing this I wrapped the y-pipe with heat wrap. I used a set of headers that are not the best fitting that I bought used. I know that American racing and kooks fit way better than this. The process is the same no matter what header you use. Some bigger headers do require you to lift the motor some to install. Most 1 3/4" do NOT require this.

    That bolt he talks about at 2:52 made me pull my whole motor out lol we didn’t have any ratcheting wrenches.. I ended doing a mild rebuild anyways so 🤷🏽‍♂️

    It takes you a few hours to do all that work, it will take me a few days by the looks of it. I am planning to get a 98 through 2002 trans am in the near future so I can see what is in store for me. Great video.

      I cap off that area and leave diaphragm off

      2001 and 2002 don't have egr. You can plug yous with a freeze plug

    You dont need o2 extensions. You can just break the o2 wires out of the harness to make them long enough to reach. Did it on my 02 SS. Been fine for 5 years now.

      JazzedHellcat you can and I have done that in the past but wanted plug and play option here. I like the fact when you make them you can Taylor the length to your application.

    I did mine by myself, just like you I had to have my son hold the headers from the bottom while I put in the gasket and bolts.

    Just as I assumed, your instructional on this is clear, to the point, and a great follow. Makes me much more confident on attempting this to my 00 ws6. Very nice work man! Love the ws6 content. I too was hoping for a start up I'll admit haha. Is it much louder even with the stock muffler? Do you have plans for an aftermarket catback? I have a GMMG on mine, absolutely love the tone.

      DarrenWS6 thank you. I know I should have done a before and after on sound. It is quite a bit louder. If I do exhaust it will probably be magnaflow or corsa

      TWA Motorsports nice. My friend has a black 02 fully done up except for heads and cam, has kooks longtubes carted, magnaflow catback. Clean sound but the cats kill the sound. My GMMG is just as loud. Corsa still make exhaust for these cars huh?

      DarrenWS6 yeah cats quiet it down but I had kooks with no cats and magnaflow on my last one and it was nice. Gmmg looks awesome but is a little raspy with longtubes and no cats

    Im assuming that you just plug off the small vacuum line removed from the back..And the air pump doesnt have a belt ?

    can you explain the heater hose and wrap for the exhaust, also is it possible to use hi flow cats, i already have the long tubes installed and I think the pipes clank with engine movement. Hoping to quite mine down some and loose the fumes smell as well.

      Absolutely. Heater hose was to solve the y pipe hitting the floor. Wrap was to keep the rubber from getting too hot. Probably need motor mounts but this is a quick fix. I will replace motor mounts when I do a k member. Only way to lose the smell is add cats or switch to e85(better smell)

    This video is more than enough if you're familiar with this f-body. FYI the driver's side (with these particular headers) are a slight pain, if you don't pull the steering knuckle, you hit the fire wall! And you better grind off the entire frame lip cause the outside tube WILL hit!
    Added note: If your motor's not built, I suggest staying this 1 3/4" not 1 7/8" BETTER FIT

    Have you pulled the manifolds out with the catalytic converters still on them? If so how difficult is it? My 3 “triangle” bolts are pretty rusted so I an expecting to have to pull manifold and cats out together. Also, did you sell your originals catalytic converters? Is so how much did you get? Thank you!

      You can if it's high enough off the ground. I did sell but don't remember.

    Just curious how the 3 inch y pipe hooks to stock 2 3/4 pipe, I have something similar on order some say need a reducer?
    Also did you have it Tuned?

      yukonejc c it is built to slide into 2 3/4 so no reduction is necessary. I will be tuning it soon. Ses light is on now due to air injection and rear o2s

    Hey there, Im just about to do this. So some questions. For the 02 sensors. Do you have to run the ones after the cats. I am running a catted Y pipe. Can I omit the post cat sensors and program them out? Is this a problem? will it cause some issues? Should I do this or NOT? And will using the longer rear sensor wires on the front sensors work with long tubes? Thanx.

      If you run a cat ypipe why not run rear o2s. You can program them out but most don't run cats when doing that.

    Just installed a set on a LT1 ws6. You didn't have to keep the headers loose then install the 3 piece y pipe? We tried with headers snug to the heads and the Kooks y pipe will not go in. Debating to just loosen it all up and try that way. Heard some day they had to do this with slip fit headers but your video you don't mention that and appeared to go on easily.

      Sometimes you can leave the headers loose to give more movement. I have never had to do that however. Ls cars do go easier than LT cars.

    Nice Video..However what happens with the air injection hardware..Belt that drives the air pump?? Hoses on top ? Small vacuum line ? Just plug them off ???Thanks in advance

      Michael Baughman thank you. No belt on air pump. All hoses and lines are removed. Plug vacuum line in back.

    What about 02 simulator? I had those installed and they don't seem to work because service light comes on. I clear it but comes on. I have a SLP Diablon Tuner but never got into learning how to use it.

      You can use o2 sims but I like using hp tuners to delete the codes. o2 sims are fine however

    Hello, So if I delete the airpump, egr stuff and delete the rear O2 sensors. I can delete the codes and rear O2 and with some O2 extensions I will not throw any codes? IL has obd2 scanners with no sniffer or visual. Will I still be able to pass emissions scan? I guess you could also buy headers with the egr stuff attached to the headers and bolt it up...

      I'm not sure. If the light is turned off it should not show an error.

      Header has no rear hole

      No egr here. Air injection plug is still under the driver side fender well.

      They were kind of thought up by detroit speed and engineering . Most call them DSE wheel stands. They are 16" long 2x4s glue and screwed together to desired height.

    Man I tried to get texas speed headers and y pipe and since I'm in California the website wouldn't allow me. Got MDS mass airforce intake, slp ram air box and Texas speed catback with electric cut out. Also have TSP hot cam

    I have a C5 and I just got Pacesetter Long tube headers, but they are 1 7/8", do you think I'll have any fitment issues? I'm hard pressed to find any TH-cam videos and reviews of Pacesetters but I see them for sale everywhere.

      Yes 02 extensions sometimes and depending on year maybe egr delete plates.

    Did you just delete the and plug the egr? Did you tune the ecm to delete the egr and rear 02?

      2001 and up hand no egr. I did plug and remove air injection and removed rear 02 in ecm

      Not sure what you mean? It plugs in and bolts under the front driver side fender well.

    If you run cheap headers, make sure the header flanges are nice and flat. Mine weren't and I had to use double gaskets.

      Good call. I had that issue on cheap ones before. I actually checked that on these and they were flat. Flanges were a little thin but flat.

      TWA Motorsports cool to be active bud😎. Did you also have issues with the y pipe fittings. Use a strap to pull my headers in together just to slide my y pipe on. It's been hell keeping it from comming off. Also how is your clearance? I bottom out all the time, hardly make it over speed bumps. Mines a 3inch till the cat back.

    So just to clarify. Lock tight on the studs and anti seize on the plugs.
    And do all long tube headers hit the frame like that??? What’s up with that???

      Anti seize on plugs and I put nothing on the header bolts. These cheap longtubes did hit the frame.

      Lucky Goose most people do poly or solid mounts before headers and say that helps the banging on the frame and bottom of the car idk if op has or has not done that but just mentioning cause that could potentially help

    Did you have to unbolt motor mounts at all! I used to have an LT1 and I had to remove bolts to raise engine up?

    man, i can NOT get to the rear bolt for the coil pack on the passenger side. i dont want to remove the heater hose, but i may have to, is it worth it?

    What do I do about the hose that plugs in right behind the throttle body that branches off of the passenger side manifold? Do I just leave it open without the hose?

      That is egr and no you need to plug that if equipped. 2001 and 2002 models didn't have that.

      Factory ones are labeled if not line up with header as the center bolts are offset.

    Going on with my headers and y pipe from Texas performance next week. How did you get all the manifold bolts out without breaking one off? I am scared to death I’m gonna have at least one bolt break off on me.

      Take your time and it will be fine. Start with outside ones and work your way to the middle. Outsides first then so on. Take to middle out first. Generally go back in is where they break because people cross thread them.

      It could be removed completely but have to cap the vacuum line it plugs into on the back of the intake

    The plastic piece with the hoses was the AIR system? Is that what the block off plates Hawks and others sell used for? I thought the 2001 and 2002 had done away with the AIR system

      That is right and yes they sell blockoffs no air injection was still on 01 and 02 but no egr

Ive been using a Hypertech power programmer to tune with but it wont tune out o2 sensors or this AIR code...I can clear them but they will come back...I have also bought the throttle body bypass but not installed as well as a 92mm throttle body and adapter to my LS6 intake. I really love my car! I just want to make it a bit quicker since now 4 and 6 bangers are putting out 300+ hurse powers...So I want to keep to bolt on's and keep all my stock parts. I have a 02 WS6 convertible in NBM with tan top and 2 tone ive had 8 f bodys including a super rare 78 triple blue hurst edition with factory munci 4 spedd with every option ws6 package hurst shorty t tops...miss it but back to my questions what do u think i shud do about my questions above

      My sons 98 Firebird T/A has huge gaping holes in the bottom of his headers, it's loud! Since he was the tig welder I'm replacing the headers. His sway bar was not connected to the car except to the end links. He was driving it like a trampoline, and bottoming out everywhere. Don't know what he was thinking. Anyway, he left the car behind so it's now mine. I decided to make a catch can under the headers to catch the leaking header fluid so I'm just gonna reuse it into the new headers. If that doesn't give me enough, it's also spewing power steering fluid out the bottom, I'll just put a catch can under the power steering pump and reuse all that fluid. Easy peasy, right. You could start your end header bolts, notch your gasket end bolt holes and then drop it in and the other holes will be lined up if doing it yourself. That's the way I do it anyway to make it much easier when installing headers. Thought I would throw that in for anyone still reading. Hope it was worth the money for all that reading you just did.

      New headers didn't have hook ups and it is useless unless you have sniff test in your state.

    well ayear ago after i collected the bbk long tubes and y pipe, slp loudmouth1, throttle body, both a vortex split cai and a slp cai, smooth connection pipe for either cai, egr block off plate, im sure im forgetting some parts...anyways a drunk guy with no insurance hit my wife in drivers rear while she was sitting still waiting to turn..he ran, cops caught him, turns out he was dui with no insurance driving someone else's truck that wasnt insured so USAA totalled it and wud only pay 10,000 and I had to pay the uninsured motorist fee.... If you google 2002 ws6 trans am convertible there are none under 30k and some go up to 60 k with just a few 1000 miles but average is around 35 to 45k..now even that is actual selling price usaa wud only pay out kbb value which dont even have the ws6 option..anyways...bought the car back...now a year later i finally got the title back (salvage) and my car has been in shop for 6 or more months being fixed because big name shops wudnt do a salvage car...So soon Ill be taking it in to get headers and exhaust done at hawk's 3rd gen since they are close, and I dont know if they will drop the engine or do it like you did as they have lifts and such...so may be looking at doing a cam while its out.. maybe heads depending on cost..Im thinking if i dont do them both at the same time as exhaust I will have to pay labor 2wice..they also do dyno and tune there..did you do a cam swap and or heads?

      @@TWAMotorsports No big deal! I was replacing my 02 sensors on 98 z28 the yesterday and I didn't pay attention to how routed the longer bosch 13111 harness on drivers side when I removed the old 02 sensors. My bad. Excellent videos. Thanks for sharing. Very similar to my Camaro.

    this is cool and all, but if you are going to drive this on the street, dont you have to have vehicle specific cats installed to pass an inspection? I know the state inspection will report you for emissions tampering if they are not installed.
