Cheap and easy way to upgrade LS1 Camaro or Trans Am brakes. CTS V Brembo install.

  • In this video I will show you how to upgrade your factory ls1 front brakes to the gen 1 CTS V Cadillac brake calipers and the 14 inch 5th gen Camaro Rotors. This will work on 98-02 Camaro, Firebird, Trans am. You may find some use the c6 z06 calipers. That is not the right way to do it. The pad will not contact that rotor properly.
    The calipers I bought on ebay were a great deal. They come with the pads in the video. Also and very importantly they came with the pin kit. If you don't get these calipers with the pads and pin kit make sure the pads you buy come with them. They are expensive separate.
    See links below for all the parts you need. Please feel free to ask any and all questions. Would love to help as always.

    That looks great! I was surprised at the brake pads you chose though, performance calipers and big rotors with a ceramic pad. The ceramic pad is made for comfort and low noise but you get a lot more braking grip from a performance semi metallic brake pad like ebc yellow stuff or blue stuff if available with the calipers. Thought I'd mention this since people that watching for performance upgrade options might copy your choices and wonder why they don't notice much difference in stopping power.

    • @BillClay88
      @BillClay88 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      He specifically mentioned aesthetics. That's what 95+% of ppl have these BBKs for. How's the noise level with aggressive pads? Coz I see a lot of annoying squeaking (not sure I trust the drilled and slotted rotirs either) with ppl spending 2Gs or more. That's unacceptable.

    Super glad I found this channel keep up the good work. I flatter myself that I know a thing or two about most things automotive. The video was filled with nothing but good info. You provide enough information for the reasonable competent enthusiast to do the job. What adds to my comfort level is you give enough explanation of why without getting too involved again reasonable competent. Should have no trouble what so ever.
    I performed a similar up grade to my old 3rd gen 92 formula 350 WS6. using C-5 13" with the stock 4th gen Rrs PBR and 17x9 all around with a square tire 275/55 17. used the 1le combo valve the get more rear brake bias. worked well one of the best upgrades I made to the car better even than the 383 /425WHP with beefed 700R4 . Thanks for sharingt his is a great upgrade again throe explain and illustration. Happy new sub. going to binge watch a bit.

    Keep an eye on the pin kit. The ones that come with pads are often a few mm's shorter than the OEM ones. I reuse mine every time because of this. They have the possibility of backing out.

      No problem. I'm sure they're probably safe 99.999% of the time, but I have seen a forum post about it happening before with a different set of Brembos.
      You can really tell the difference looking at the front of the caliper. Mine, with the OEM pin kit, look like this.

You took the words right out of my mouth , I just did lower dust pads on my e63 amg and the pins they gave me where shorter I didn't like that , the stock ones you can see the cone of the pin stick out past the caliper for visual complete seat , another reason is the stock pins are stainless steel no stick with a magnet , the ones included where zinc coated steel equals possible rust

    • @pmotorsports8276
      @pmotorsports8276 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      ??? Almost every company makes a disc conversion for this car. If you're referring to rear brakes. The optional rear disc from Firebird (same Generation). The system was the same on the early RWD Seville. The only problem is the Seville is the big 5 (5X5" bolt pattern). So you'll need Firebird rotors. 01 and newer S-10 Blazer 2WD (easier to incorporate parking brake). 3 or 4th gen Camaro 4 TH gen best.

    Should set to front and rear to lock at the same time,
    And then dial a little more front lock.

      I gotta say that by 4 min into the video this isn’t sounding cheap OR easy, given that no TA came w 18” wheels, so right oughta the box you’re telling me I need 4 new 18” wheels and tires on my WS6 that came w the upgrade to 17”!!!! That means I’d have to recalibrate the speedometer then, too!! Then, just for a chaser, you toss in the fact that I have to get the BRAND NEW ROTORS you’re recommending specially machined to fit?!?! NOT CHEAP!!! DEFINITELY NOT EASY!!!! WTF?!?!?! Y’know what? You get a “spam flag” for sucking me in and wasting my time!

    • @CaptainThirdGen
      @CaptainThirdGen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Psykldoc for 18in wheels, a 275/35/18 tire is same diameter as stock, and does not require speedo recalibration.
      For as big of an upgrade as this is over stock, it is cheap and easy.
      If you were familiar prices of kits like Baer, Wilwood, etc, this CTSV setup is very cheap and easy
      Also, the use of OEM parts is nice for future serviceability.
      Having the rotors machined really shouldnt be a big deal, and shouldnt be very expensive.

If you’re too lazy, cheap, and not mechanically inclined, this isn’t the project for you.

      1 more thing, you didn't have to drill the bolt holes for the new calipers? Other how-tos that I've read for this say you need to drill out those holes for the bigger bolts that the cts-v calipers use.

    I'm doing the same CTS-V brake swap onto my 97 Z28 with the same 4-Piston Calipers but I'll also swap in "Detroit Speed" SKF X-Tracker wheel hubs. My Camaro needs a 1 inch or 1-1/4 spacer that has it's own studs because both my 18 inch C5 Magnesium Wheels that I use for road racing and my 18 inch C6 wheels for the street were both over a inch inside the fenders. For brake rotors I'm using C6 Z06 Eradispeed rotors from Baer which might have a tiny difference in offset. If so, a few washers in between the spindle and caliper should center the brake caliper and brake pads. Using the C6 Z06 Rotors, you don't have to have the center bore enlarged verses the 5th Gen SS Camaro...

    It’s funny that I just added a “big brake kit” to my 3rd gen 89 IROC and by big brake kit I mean the 98-02 “LS1” brakes. And dont get me wrong the LS1 brakes on a 3rd gen is a dramatic improvement over the stock 10” single piston front brakes. But what I like is that now since I have the modified spindles I only need the correct bracket for whatever brakes I want. So quick question, what power level would you recommend to justify upgrading to these brakes?, I’m currently sitting at 330 hp at the tire

      @@bhcamaro2002 / ok well I live in NE Pennsylvania so I do some fun driving on the back roads, now the car is an 89 Camaro so I think they were 3200ish lbs and I’ve only removed the steel hood for a fiberglass one (had an accident otherwise I’d have kept the of hood). The car is a T-top but I’ve added weld in s. frame connectors. Like I said I have the “ls1” brakes up front and pbr calipers out back on a BW 9 bolt with 3.27 gearing. I’m in the middle of a power train swap right now with an Lq4 running 862 heads, so 10.5:1 compression, drop in truck cam for the 6.0 so power wise on paper at least I think ill be sitting at around stock ls3 power with everything coming in early because of the truck cam (using a truck cam because this isn’t a race car and I wanted my hp / tq down low). I have the opportunity to get a set of 2012 Camaro SS brakes for practically nothing and from what I’ve read my car will be 600-800 lbs lighter than the 5th gen. So what do you think about only running the front 4 piston brakes and leaving the rear as is or should I swap the rears out as well, oh and should I bother with an adjustable proportioning valve? Thanks for the help n sorry to be long winded

I’m a fucking rookie when it comes to this stuff so there may have been some obvious mods needed that he didn’t need to mention that i just missed.
