WHO AM I?
I am a Harvard Graduate School of Education alumni '16 and a current PhD student in the Department of Education Studies at the University of California San Diego. I produce videos about the graduate school application and my journey through a PhD program. Subscribe to follow my journey through the PhD experience and to gain insight on how to best prepare for the graduate school application process.
I created this channel because I did not have access to many resources when I was applying for graduate programs. Now that I have been through two graduate school application processes, I want to share my knowledge and the helpful information I have gained through those experiences.
Additionally, for the past four years, I have been working as a Retention Specialist and Director for a federally-funded program at a higher education institution. I spent these four years helping over 400 students to apply to four-year institutions, attain scholarships, and navigate the higher education system. I created this channel in order to share my knowledge of college access as it pertains to graduate school.

Hi Ivan. I have a master's with a non-publishable thesis at a non-research state school. Is it still possible to get into phd program w/o formal research experience?
Yes! Your masters thesis is considered formal research experience even though it wasn’t published. Make sure to include that in your statement of purpose and application. When you are writing your statement of purpose, write about other experiences with a research lens.
Hi Ivan, what attachments should I send to the professors, when I am emailing them for the first time? SOP and Resume?
Faculty are busy people and receive a lot of these request. So, in your email communication keep it succinct and to the point and only attached a resume or CV.

Do withdraw grades W's look bad on a graduate school application
If it’s one maybe two, it should be an issue. If the committee thinks it’s a patter then most likely yes. It also depends when you received these. So if it was in your first year of undergrad and then you performed better then it shouldn’t be. Either way you should still apply and see what happens. Use other components of the application to offset those W’s.
