  • Hi! I'm Jojo and I just wanted to share my experience at UC Berkeley and hopefully help you decide where to go! If you are deciding where to go for college, just remember that it's not what college you choose but what you make of your college experience. Feel free to comment any questions you may have. Good Luck!

    So, I am from the bay and I grew up running around on Cal’s campus waiting for my dad to get out of class. I remember many eras of Berkeley. I worked my butt off and got accepted into the College of Engineering starting this fall, and have been wondering about housing. Until you voiced the issues at Cal with old housing, and it ultimately sucking, I have decided to take the money for off-campus adult apartment funding and stay the eff home. Driving the 30 miles each way, might find a way to spend the night nearby. You made me even more thankful to be accepted into Cal, made me realize how lucky I am to have my financial aid, and have made me so excited to learn - it’s going to be hard, but I can’t wait to finally wear a cap and gown. High school dropout in da house and on her way to Cal…. GO BEARS!

    Like you I was stuck between colleges too. I felt absolutely zero affinity toward Cal. I was *this* close to committing to UCLA, where all my friends were going, but I ended up being the odd one out in my group and picking Cal because EECS. I've spent a lot of time wondering if I made the right choice, and this video offered some nice assurance that things turn out well in the end.

    So many people can’t decide between UCLA UCB USC, would going to USC give an advantage for more resources as a private school for more exclusive internships and better career resources with exclusive opportunities

    • @jojochen38
      @jojochen38  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great point! Personally, I think that the vibe of each of those schools are very different and picking a school based off of your personality and what you value is the best way to go. USC would have more resources (lower faculty to student ratio, smaller classes, more direct help) but whether or not those would translate to more exclusive opportunities depends on the individual and their career path. These schools are all "known for" different things, I would suggest looking at what each of these schools offer for your specific major/field. But also keep in mind that METs, EECS at Cal would have an "advantage" over a CS student at UCLA for a tech career, but the UCLA student might get more "exclusive" internships at UCLA instead of UCB simply because it's an environment she thrives in. Hope that made sense haha

  • @sallygoose
    @sallygoose 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I'm also looking into pursuing a combination of design, tech, and business as a CS major! What do the opportunties look like at Cal? Are you double majoring or minoring in anything else?

    • @jojochen38
      @jojochen38  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am hoping to double major in CS and either business or economics! I know a lot of students interested in design who are studying cognitive science, so a double with that is pretty common as well. I would say though, most of the design opportunities are going to be through clubs since there really isn't a design major. (check out Berkeley innovation and innovative design) You can also work on design in tech clubs such as cal hacks or blueprint. I think working on design in business/tech spaces will allow you to better understand how you want to combine the three fields!

    OMG HI IM A FRESHMAN AT CAL THIS YEAR AND I HAVE THE TEMPORARY QUAD IN UNIT 2!!!! can you tell me any more about it??? im super nervous about it so if you have any advice please let me know! also can you get housing through the greek system?

    • @jojochen38
      @jojochen38  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! I had the temporary housing in Unit 3 and eventually moved to a suite in unit 1. I'm not too sure if anything has changed, but for me, they basically converted the study rooms on each floor to be a quad. You get a lot more space compared to the triples in the units, so it's definitely not a bad thing! For my year, they moved people out of the temporary housing as soon as other spots opened up. Every week, they would send emails to us about the housing options available and it would be a first come first serve type of thing to try to move to a better permanent housing. I would try to move either at the very beginning of the semester or around winter break. You'll likely have more time to move and it's easier to meet people in your building. All greek life I've seen don't offer housing to freshmen and people generally try to live in house starting sophomore year. Hope this helps!

    • @jojochen38

      Hi! I didn't really learn how to code until college started. Since students declare CS after coming to Cal, the only thing that matters is doing well in the intro CS classes. These classes don't assume you have any CS background and a lot of people don't!

    Is your major CS,which usually people say that of course general education classes are big lecture halls but when you get into your major the classes are like 30-40, but is CS the same or not?

    • @jojochen38
      @jojochen38  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I am a CS major. I think for most majors, the gen ed classes are around 200-300 or so students and the major specific classes are around 20-40. However, for CS, the gen-ed are around 1,000-2,000 students and upper divisions can range from 30-200. With that being said bigger classes are not necessarily a bad thing, when you take a course, there are discussions which are taught by TAs, which are always going to be around 30 people. (This is where most of your question will get answered). Lectures are generally recorded for larger classes as well.

    • @TechVHD
      @TechVHD 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      lainksbu so it’s not like a usual major at a CSU UC where after you pick a major and the classes get to 30-35 people for major classes? For CS At Berkeley it always is that many people and not 30-35? Like for example CS at a CSU or some UCs?
