since you asked about viewer's experience with rangers.. i bought a 96 2.3 auto 2wd. it was broke down and honestly should have been scrapped. my uncle bought it and dumped some money into it and gave up. sold it to me for $500 with the claim that it only needed another flywheel and starter.. it was replaced already but he couldn't get it sorted enough actually drive it. turns out the firing order was off, going by the book btw. the timing belt was also off a couple of teeth, also him. it was kicking back when it was cold but would start if it was above 80f outside. he also put a head gasket on it and a load of other stuff that had went bad from sitting (with a blown head gasket). didn't tell me that engine was full of rust and he had to "clean up" the cam and all that, it was pitted pretty bad, springs were thinned out, ugly. i got it home fixed the problems and then find the truck developed a miss. a compression check was less than impressive, should dropped a valve looking at the broken springs i found. i end up putting another engine in it and the trans lost 3rd and 4th like 2 days after i started driving it. i went out an bought a valve body assembly from the closest pull a part and slapped it in there old dirty fluid and all lol. she's been going good enough since. minor stuff, brakes, alternator, purge valve and solenoid is all i can think of more than oil changes. the trans is about done at about 200k pump whines and it shifts fairly hard when cold. the motor with unknown miles needs lash adjusters/lifters if you'd rather, it just chatters and can run rough when cold, i can here the "lifter tick" till the oil starts thinning with heat. i know that truck inside and out now and after all that, i still have it. it's been a trooper going on 4 years and some change now. it's pretty much my car with a bed at this point, work commuter. it's better than my 2500hd is on gas. only by about 50%, $20 to drive the ranger all week to work and $30 to drive the gmc. i suggest one to anyone needing something small to get around without kids. it's great, fires right up and goes every time but she ain't very fast. thinking hard on a v8 swap but idk..
My first vehicle is a 2010 2.3 manual 2wd Ranger that I got last fall @ 200k km. I paid $5000 for it which seemed good at the time. The first thing to go was the steering rack which started leaking black tar after a very cold week. I don't think that it received any maintenance since the factory given the state of the steering fluid. That was by far the easiest major fix that I'll probably ever do on a vehicle. It was super easy to get at and only had a few bolts holding it on. Honestly I don't think I could have asked for a better thing the get my hands greasy for the first time on. A few months later the starter began majorly acting up, and only working some of the time. Things simply didn't work out to get it fixed at the time, so I got some experience bump starting it for about a week before I was able to get it rebuilt. As I was pulling the starter, I noticed some play in the upper control arm next to it. Turns out that the upper ball joints were shot on both sides and I needed to replace both arms. It needed a steering alignment since I replaced the steering rack, but it wasn't that bad until I messed with the control arms. Now the front tires are pointed slightly toward each other, and I have an alignment scheduled. I also suspect that the differential is failing because when I do tight-ish turns there is a loud grinding noise coming from the back and the back end feels like it's pulling. The last part I find really weird since it's a rwd. In spite of everything that I've written above, I do absolutely love my Ranger, and I don't regret buying it. It's a ton of fun, and I fully intend to continue fixing it for years to come. Frankly I suspect that it hasn't been maintained very well, but it's also been in a lot of minor collisions before I got it so that doesn't help.
97 ford ranger 2.3l 5spd I get 34mpg in my area all highway miles around here no leaks 2wd I love it has all the luxury items installed in it like no cruise control, no power windows, door locks. Doesn't get any better than that. I'm going to be putting a turbo 2.3l from an 88 ford turbo couple thunderbird
Yeah I got a Ford Ranger. Bought it for 1,000 bucks 12 years ago. It's a 1996 with the 2.3 four cylinder. I've done all the work on it, and she keeps on going.
I have a '98 Ranger XLT 3.0L that I paid $700 USD for over a year ago, and it doesn't owe me a dime at this point... 309,000 miles on the odometer, and all I've had to replace was the shifter tube, and an oxygen sensor... I've had 28 vehicles over the past 10 years, and none of them have even come CLOSE to what I've put this little truck through over the past year. I usually buy a cheap beater, drive it until it breaks, and then scrap it for half the price toward my next heap. I bought this truck as a last resort, and it's never left me stranded no matter how much I've beaten the absolute SHIT out of it, and I really respect that... to the point where I'm actually putting money into fixing it up. I really want to see just how many miles it can ACTUALLY do! If you find a good running Ranger, then BUY IT. You won't regret your decision. ❤
You got it bro. I bought my 2002 in 2008 with 55k miles , and now at 190k it still keeps trucking along- absolutely no difference in engine performance nor do I expect there will anytime soon. Fantastic little truck with a few electrical quirks and definitely a few rust issues but other than that, just really can't say enough about this super duper little machine
I have owned two Rangers. My first Ranger was a 99 3.0 V6 4x4. My current Ranger is a 2010 4.0 V6 2wd. Both were/are great trucks. Like you have said, they have their quirks and issues but if you maintain them they are great for what they were designed to be, which was a fleet work truck.
I own an '89 Ranger with over 320,000 miles. Rearend lasted until 310,000 transmission/transfer case until 317,000. The motor (2.9 L) is still original and doesnt smoke, tick, knock or hesitate. Best truck I've owned
I don't know if it's been mentioned in the comments but the water is coming in from the third brake light. Change it the gasket on it. There's actually a guy on you tube that sells some he makes on ebay relatively cheap.
I'm on my second Ranger. The first was a '95 that had over 330k miles. I wanted to refurbish, but the estimated cost was about $6K US so I bit the bullet and got a 2010 extended cab XLT. Came with all the bells and whistles available on a truck back then, and everything still works. The first owner handled this thing with kid gloves, keeping it for over ten years. The second and third owners only kept it for a few months. I plan on keeping it until it falls apart, just like the first one.
Got one 1994 ranger 2.3 5 speed 350,000 miles still runs. Daily driver 1999 2.5 5 speed 270,000 miles. Luv these trucks. Only problem is rust does too in the Chicago area. Cant beat these
With my truck (99 ranger 3.0 4x4 5 speed with 220k miles) I hauled another ranger on a trailer (5,000lbs) up and down the mountains of West Virginia with absolutely no issues. Never got hot, never complained and cruised just fine at 65mph (highway speed here) and even stopped pretty well too. I paid 1700 bucks for it 2 or 3 years ago, beat the hell out of it and it just kept going. Now I’ve grown pretty fond of the thing so I’m doing some upgrades like a v8, new interior with power leather heated buckets, full console, hud, sound system, small lift and some other goodies. I highly recommend a ranger to anyone, they’re great little trucks. That’s why I have 4 now lol
@@MontanaDirtRoads no sir. mine has 31x10.5r15s atm, and it's not as slow as people make it out to be but that's partly due to the 5 speed, when I get the motor swapped and whatnot I'm thinking of stepping up to a 33 but no bigger. I already have a ranger with 35s and it's abysmal
@@DylanC828 I call them a 3.slow cause they will never be a "fast" truck with that motor..their an economy motor that's durable as hell lol, they get the job done some with 145 lbs torque lol
@@MontanaDirtRoads true, mine averages about 26-30 mpg. I've seen some turbo 3.0s outrun older hemis but they don't last long lol cast crank gives out at about 300 horse or 6000 rpm but nothing like a small block can, which is why I'm dropping a 5.0 in it
Owner of a 2008 Ranger, 4x4, 4.0 liter, 5 speed manuel. Had a 2005 Mazda, 3.0 , 5speed manuel. A world of difference in power.. I've always been a Ranger fan. Very reliable trucks and can handle heavy bed loads and tow real well. The only issue you may have is the timing chains. When you need them replaced, you're looking at about $2,000.
My 2004 ford ranger has all original accessories and bulbs, except. for the third brake light. At 105,000 miles 2 years ago, the last of the catalytic converter blew out. Now I get 22 mpg city, before the cat blew out, 17 mpg. Runs perfectly, paint is still very good. Replaced a shifter cable, basically nothing else but batteries. Amazing daily driver.
My first vehicle was a 95 Mazda b2300 that my parents bought for me had 86000 miles on it I still drive it only problem I had on it was the heater core 300000 miles later it still runs take care of your vehicles they will last.
We own a 2011 Ford Ranger XLT super cab 4X4 with a 4.0 V6 , a 5spd automatic transmission, tow pkg, LSD. We bought it in 2019 and it had only 20K miles. It’s Silver (we hate silver, grey or black), but we bought it for $4K less than KBB. I had it 2 toned out with Red metallic. I added a K&N intake and a Flowmaster 3” exhaust, custom wheels, running boards, custom red and black interior, LineX spray in bed liner, air shocks for the rear, & skid plates. We had to go to MT 2 years ago to get a load of items from my wife’s family farm. I put 70# of air in the shocks so the pickup would ride level and 50# of air in the Cooper Discoverer A/T tires. I set the cruise on 75mph and consistently got 25mpg. Our Ranger currently has only 34K miles. I’m a maintenance freak. I change the oil every 4K miles with Mobile 1 full synthetic. When it hit 30K miles I had a transmission flush, changed the front and rear differential, transfer case grease. This is our 4th Ranger and is only used for work around our property and going to my favorite fishing hole. It will probably out live us. They’re great lil pickups.
In a span of 22 years, I’m on my 4th Ranger. ‘98 2.3 stick, ‘03 3.0 auto, ‘05 4.0 auto and now ‘11 4.0 auto - got hella miles out of all - my current ‘11 is the best I’ve had, rear disc was a GREAT upgrade. Between that and the Class 3 tow package, this thing is a beast towing. I pulled an ‘18 ft travel trailed from Louisiana to San Diego through hella mountains - yeah I had to slow down to 50 going up steep inclines but with the trans cooler that comes stock with the Class 3 tow package, it didn’t strain the truck very much. I’ve since pulled that trailer all the way to Miami and all over the southeast. I’m at 125k and baby this one so I can keep it on the road as long as I can. Ford should have never stopped making these in the U.S.
2007 Ford Ranger Sport. 2wd, 5sp, 3.slow. 250,000km. Had to do first major maintenance on it this year, had to change out the timing cover gasket because of a coolant leak. So figured it was a good time to do a timing chain and guides as well. Rear end whines like a cheap hooker, but its solid. Starts every time. Does its work without complaint. No power options. Nothing to go wrong. Alberta truck so its still good underneath. Solid 18mpg on the highway, every time- just like its original window sticker says. Doesn't burn oil. It just works. And that's what I love about it.
Fellow Canadian here. Alberta. I have a 1998 Ford Ranger with the 2.5 4 cylinder with 5 speed manual and although it's gutless, I love the fuel economy 23-25mpg. Helps being just a rwd and not having the additional height or weight of 4wd and bigger motor Mine is an extended cab with a pretty similar canopy to yours. I have about 370,000km on mine
Mine is a 96 B3000 with the 3.0. Got it in 2014 with 97000mi, now it's at 150,000. I did end up with a cracked head but my cousin who owns a shop put a pair of rebuilt heads on from a ford windstar. Also had the clutch replaced due to the slave cylinder sticking. Those repairs were still cheaper than making payments. And they're easy to work on when doing minor repairs. Mine has the manual 4x4 with lock hubs and I put a set of BFGs on it. I see around 20mpg out of it. And believe or not, it books for about the same price I paid for it years ago. Definitely recommend these truck for anyone wanting a cheap daily truck.
Mine is a 95 B4000. Water pump went out at 311000 miles, but it’s still on the original clutch. Bought it in 2003 for $5500, best money I’ve ever spent. Still have it. As capable off road as a stock Wrangler.
I have a 98 XLT flairside bed with cap has every option. Has twin bucket factory seats. Its in show condition, no scrathches dents or rust. Original paint got it 5 years ago with 80k original miles was garage kept. Only paid 4000.00 too I detailed finish back to new and its garaged just turned to 105k miles 4.0 . Has manual 5 speed and we basically use it to pull behind motorhome. It is the perfect truck to tow behind to hold all our extra stuff when we are on the road with camper. I have inflatable 12 ft motor boat In a container slides right in bed takes up 25% of bed area, along with 2 bikes mounted to rear hitch and extra stuff we use out of bed. In winter when traveling I keep 12lb propane tank as backup for Rv so we dont run out and its easier to refill in pickup then moving the RV out to refill. I then run propane hose to RV if needed. The extended cab is perfect for the dog to ride in when we are not hitched up to RV. With all the toys in Bed once we unhitch from RV we are set to go to lake or bike trails. Its a great truck will out live me with on 100k miles. I keep it very well maintained. Just replaced rear wheel seals and bearings, new Motorcraft shocks. I use only motorcraft replacement part as well. I average 18 mpg 5 speed helps. With 4.0 and 5 speed she can pick up and go. Added Flowmaster Stainless cat back exhaust gives it a little growl. Other than that its all original no rust. I treat the frame as well to keep rust from forming. My daughters BF just bought a 05 Ranger with 3.0 225k miles runs ok still , they just keep running if they we cared for be previous owners.
Just got a 99' 3.0L super cab ranger, and i am surprised with all the work that needs to be done, but man... Even though it needs the work, this thing still is running and taking the toll. I bought it because it was the only truck in my area for the budget im on. 146k miles, and she runs fine!
I have a 99’ 3.0L as well and it’s 142k. All sorts of issues popped up but nothing crazy. Only thing I am really worried about is my seals will start to leak at some point and the rear main seal might be a bit pricy to replace but I will get it done. Vehicles are crazy expensive and our trucks are cheap to insure haha
Bought a 1996 Ranger 5 speed 2wd bought it from a farmer. Its in mint condition only work I’ve done to it is serpentine belt change the oil tint the windows everything was stock not even tint on it. She’s perfect for what I use it for. Gas is decent power is okay gets the job done
I have a 5 SPD 4 cylinder 2.3L 1995 Ford Ranger with 304,385 miles. Only done basic maintenance and I've used it for my landscaping/lawn care business for the last 9 years. I even tow a 6x10 trailer with it. They are indestructible.
I just got my 97 b4000 4.0 with the manual going, it’s a 2wd tho. It was my dad’s first car then it sat for years until I asked if I could fix it and use it as my first car. I will say that after sitting for years she gets down and boogies, hearing the wheels chirp when going into 2nd and 3rd gets you going.
I owned a 2000 ranger 3.0 4x4. It was a great little truck. The electronic 4x4 module worked when it wanted, the 3.0 in 4x4 was an underpowered pig with bad MPG, but besides that it, it always treated me well.
Got an 06' Ranger, 3.0L, and everything in it, blown up or not, from the rusted back end right down to 284,087th km on its stock alloys is home to me. I love that truck
I have a 2011 Supercab 4x4 with the 4.0 and I LOVE it!!! Shitty mileage (especially with me driving it, lol), but enough power to pass pretty much anything when I need to, and reliable as hell. The only things I've done is replaced a stuck thermostat and a couple of burned out light bulbs...best truck I've ever owned. I knew it will get shitty mileage before I bought it, but I wanted a Ranger simply because there are still so many still on the road around here...9 yrs later I still see Rangers EVERYWHERE!!! Around here, you go 20 miles, you're going to see 10 Rangers driving around, in fact, you see more old Rangers than old Toyotas.
Mine is a year 2000 Dual cab Ford Courier with 4 cylinder 2.6 litre MPi engine. I only just got it and I am giving it a make over before I put it into use as my daily driver.
I have a 2004 ranger. 4.0 auto supercab with 334K miles and I daily drive it and I love it. Bought it for 200 dollars and I've driven it about 3 years. I've replaced the spring shackles, alternator, brake line, brakes front and rear, tie rods and upper control arm/ball joint. Gets about 15, 16mpg. It's old and beat up but still goes, it's quite impressive. Looking into a b2300 4x4 5 speed which brought me to your video. Going to semi retire the old ranger but I won't be getting rid of it. Cheers to clapped out trucks!
Great video.. I have a 2000 Ranger Supercab, with the OHV 4.0 and four wheel drive. I've owned it since '05. It now has 193,000 miles on it. It's been great. Very reliable and capable. I haul a lot for construction. I have overload springs and my largest load is 2,436 pounds worth of block, concrete and rebar. I could get a bigger truck, but I love my Ranger. I can get supplies onto tight sites that an F-350 couldn't dream of getting into.
Ok i just got one this year for my first car and I love it so much its so fun its my daily all I've had to do is replace the starter only complaints I got is its a stiff ride and it has a whine somewhere from the drivetrain but tether than that I love it to death
Love the video. I just picked up a 96 b3000 2wd 5 speed and the 3.0 sips fuel. 26 to 29 mpg im averaging , so not sure why everyone is saying its bad in fuel. I shift around 3k rpm and my trips to work are 45 55 mph 15 miles a day. I do let me truck warm up for a good 10 min before I drive it. I change the oil every 2 months and a new air filter every other oil change. I also drained the gear box and put in the new synthetic stuff. Did the same for the rear diff full synthetic. Motor oil full synthetic, running shell 87 octane , and I put 2019 18 inch factory mustang wheels and tires on it. Not sure if that helped my fuel economy or hurt it. But I drive allot and fill up every 7 days
My 93 super cab 4wd is Temu version of a Tacoma. It doesn’t have the perfect body of a Toyota but the second gens look pretty good. Got lift coils on the front , fenders painted black & it’s lowered 1” in the back. DiY windows tinted w rain visors . Got it for $2k amd it’s been running good for 6 years at 130k. AC works just good enough & it’s ready for some 31.10.50’s. Get a tickle evrytime I drive it .
I have a 94 ranger, 4x4 with the 4.0.. I've had it for over 20 years. 102k miles... So far, the only thing that has gone wrong is the MAF sensor... Twice. My wife keeps telling me I should get a newer truck but I love my Ranger and want to keep it. I enjoyed your video...
Wow sounds like it’s been super reliable for you so far. I don’t see a need for a new one 102k miles, you got tones of life left! Glad you enjoyed the video.
There is a drain channel (trough) that runs under the wipers u may need to unscrew the plastic that covers it as well as remove the wiper arms. Run some silicone around the perimeter of that trough. I had water coming in to my cab too and i did that and fixed the problem. Very common on older cars. Do a google search on this issue and you'll find lots of resources.
I love my ranger, 2000 model v4 5speed, A.R.E camper top with tool box on the driver side, passenger side has a windows with security brackets as well as the rear. Everything locks too which is great because I use it for my lawn care business. Replaced the clutch a month ago and it’s torquing. 31x10.50 15s American racing wheels with Goodyear wrangler duratrac tyres. New Monroe shocks as well, but installed those when I first got the truck, but want to switch to a bilstein setup soon. Bought my truck for 3500 bucks, previous owner replaced the engine so it has around 50-55k miles on it. So far I’m happy with her and what to do a lot more to make it reliable and planning on switching to a v6 in the late of this year or next.
That’s awesome! Sounds like you got a nice project/work rig. The ARE canopies are the bomb. I’m jealous because I’m running out of room for tools in this truck and will eventually have to get a full-size or a van. I wish I could keep it. You should send me some pics on IG @liamdrives
Nice truck..I have a 1999 Ford Ranger that I refuse to sell even though my F150 is my primary driver. Yes it is a great truck that has over 223,000 miles and still going strong. I have done nothing to modify it and except for oil changes and occasional tune up my Ranger is a great work truck.
I have a 94 ranger with the 2.3 4 banger and 5 speed. All its ever had done is basic maintenance. And it's at over 350k miles. Been very reliable. Still drive it 50 or miles a day
The reason your truck is still running is its age. You have the older pushrod version of the 4.0 engine, which is bulletproof. You also have the reliable 5-speed manual. I know because I have a 2000 B4000 - the last year before they switched to an overhead cam design that is well-known for self-destructing. The 4.0 is a true truck engine with most of the torque coming at around 2500 rpm. The 3.0 is the same engine they put in the Taurus - a high-revving car engine. Check if your back window is leaking. Water coming in there will end up in the foot well. Years ago I put a neat bead of silicone around the outside window frame, and it never leaked again. Mine will drip a drop or two of oil from the rear main seal, but only if it is parked facing up a grade, not if it is flat. The only serious problem in the last few years was the brake lines, one day it peed a puddle of brake fluid while parked. I had the whole system re-done in stainless. Speaking of stainless, it still has the original exhaust, at just under 200k miles. The only real rust in in the front bumper. What you have there is a great truck that is worth whatever it costs to keep it going. Today's trucks are over-priced over-designed under-built junk. Including the new Ranger.
yooo I have the same truck! 94 mazda b4000, just bought it at 190km, got a full tune-up, replaced the rad, got the same rovelo tires (they're perfect for bush roads) and she rides like a dream! I'm about to throw a truck camper on the back for the summer
So Down to Earth and refreshing to hear the comical banter in the beginning! Subscribed! I have a 2005 Ford Ranger 5spd, 4 cylinder and it’s awesome. 😎
I have a 01 mazda b3000 rwd manual. Had it for almost 2 years now, Good little truck my slave cylinder did the same thing, I had to get a new steering rack, and the brake lines rusted out so I had to get them replaced. Ahhh the maritime province's salty roads
2023 here...amazing how just 2 years have changed things. A 95, b2300, 2wd, base, single cab with sub 200k miles can go for $3k or or more these days. More for rangers, 4wd versions and such. Nothing is cheap now.
I have older truck models..... Mazda B2200 1988 extra cab and a 1994 Range 4X4 4L extra cab. Both run great with no issues. I do live in California where we have strict emission laws so the Mazda didn't pass smog a couple of times due to the carburetor. Since the carb has been rebuilt I haven't had problems. As far as the gas mileage the Ranger uses more because it has a bigger engine and it's higher up (4X4). I love both of them and have no intention of letting them go. Both pick-ups are 5 speed. Peace.
I just literally 94 Mazda b3000 two-wheel drive. 170k on the clock.$1,900. It appears to be in pretty good shape that I can tell. I think it needs u-joints battery probably should be replaced here soon. Spark plugs spark plug wires coil pack wouldn't hurt... Don't really need a truck. But they come in handy. I hopefully I made a good choice... But for $1,900 so far I have no regrets
What is the best year B4000? I think it made 207hp a few years later not sure but want the biggest pulling mazda or ranger. Ironically the automatic shows a higher pulling capacity, wonder why? My dad got a 61 gmc new with the v-6 and it rode so well on rough farm roads, now has almost a million miles with a 3/4 ton rear end. This is when America made good stuff...
Oh also I Pulled a 35 ft Holliday rambler. Yeah motor home. 7 ton s. 14000 double her pulling. 6 ft ball feilds back and the. Again attached to the bumper pulled it back out of the interse tion we were stuck in. No smoking cluch that time
Have a 2000 ford ranger 3.0 automatic. It runs strong with a 6-cylinder engine, 4 door with matching black high-rise canopy. Black with double red pinstripes and OEM chrome ford rims on white lettered tires. Not a 4x4 but just need to know how to drive in the snow. Paid 3,900 for it 5 yrs. ago with 204,000 miles on the original engine. Just put in a new built 3.0 6-cylinder engine in it last year. Less than 15,000 miles on it so far. It's a daily driver to work, hope I can get another 200,000 miles again. Not new, but hey! It's a work truck.
I have owned three Rangers in the last three years. My first was my late grandfather’s 2000 auto with the 4.0L. Then I purchased a 2005 with the 4.0 and a manual transmission that I’ve been daily driving since December 2019. My most recent Ranger is a ‘99 4.0L auto that I am using as a trail truck. None of them have ever let me down. It has just been regular maintenance and the normal wear and tear of parts needing replaced at a certain mileage. My 2005 had a similar issue with the clutch slave cylinder. I developed a poor clutch pedal and it was hard to shift into almost all gears (nearly impossible to get into 1st and 2nd without slamming it in there) so I spent a few days pulling the trans and replacing all clutch components since it was hitting the mileage that it needed to be done. . I’m surprised to see someone reference the GM IFS from 1960. Not even GM referred to it when they were celebrating 100 years of Chevy Trucks. As the owner of a 1961 Chevy Truck I’m glad to see it get some recognition. Even better when it’s in a video about Ford/Mazda.
Got my 99 Ford Ranger super cab in June of 99. 23 years later it still runs and drives like brand new. 3 l V6 engine and I only use Mobil 1 full synthetic oil
I owned many ranger in the past and i still owned one. They are The Best Reliable Truck For Your Hard Earn Money. At least, I get what i paid for. I love counting numbers.
Sweet video i have a ford ranger it is an 04 edge with the flareside bed. it also has a 4.0 v6 with 4x4, unfortunately it is an automatic but still shifts pretty well. It is actually my first vehicle. It has around 147k miles on it, still runs like a champ. I also have 31’s but they are coopers and so far no issues. I also agree that 31’s are perfect for mid size trucks well at least non lifted ones.
That’s awesome I love the flare side bed! Sounds like you enjoy it. Coopers are sweet tires, my buddy just got some coopers for his Cummins. They’re really nice.
@@LiamDrives Same I like the flare side as well comes in handy when I need to get something in the bed and also do you know where I can get seat covers? I am having trouble finding some I have the middle seat that connects to the drivers seat with the fold down center console.
98 XLT 4X4 extended cab 4.0 manual here. Only 108k. Best pickup I've ever owned. Just got rid of the vacuum locking hubs and installed manual. You're correct, awful thirsty, but I love her.
I have an 2001 b4000 with 545,000km I do the maintenance but it just keeps getting me through life. I have other vehicles that break all the time, this thing keeps kickin'!
Your check eng light can be fixed with a cuetip. Locate your mass air flow sensor and unscrew the 2 screws . Careful not to loose o ring. 2 internal sensors you find cake up oil from bipass. Gasses. Careful take cuetip and remove caked up sensors.
The 4.0 liter V6 is a thirsty beast. I have a 1999 Ford Ranger XLT with 221000 miles on the 2.5 L4 engine, automatic. Very Easy on Gas. One thing you might want to do is install a remote oil filter relocation kit and use it as a coolant filter. Mine is on the inlet line of the heater core and you ought to see the gunk it has caught. At least the core will no longer stop up. These trucks are BAD for that.
My first truck was a Mazda b series that had no A/C, no power steering, no power brakes and a 5 speed transmission. I drove that truck from Virginia to California and back. I wonder if it's still on the road.
i have a red 08 ranger 2.3 4 cyl. 5 speed standard trans. regular cab. i get 30 mpg. hwy. i put a limited slip worm-gear style diff in it, made it better for winter. I have 87.000 k on it now. it had 46 000 k when i go it in 2013. it is the most basic no frill truck you could get at the time, i do not think the new trucks have so few options. I hope it will last longer than I will. I also got the rear leaf springs rebuilt and added one more leaf to the pack. just in case, I bought a spare engine from the wreckers, same yr make etc, 70,000 k on that one. I figured in the unlikely event the engine fails, may be the most expensive part to replace. cab is small, but not a deal breaker. the most expensive repair so far, diff upgrade. I might review mine one day for fun.
I have 2 other Rangers, but neither has a Ford Engine as I bought them as wrecks. One is a 2002 I dropped a 1983 Nissan SD-25 Diesel with the 5 speed into. Low HP (80) but can't beat the mileage. The other is a 2004 4X4 with a 3.7 Jeep Liberty engine I salvaged and rebuilt from the July flood disaster here in Easter Kentucky. Decent Mileage with some tweaks like the coolant filter rig.
I searched high and low for a low mileage fx4. Ended up with a 2011 sport 4x4 with 17,000 miles. 3.73 gears vs 4.10 ratio but I mostly do city driving so gearing is adequate. Did all the fluids and a tune up two years later zero issues other than a thermostat that I should have done with the flush. I am gonna drive this thing till the wheels fall off. Love it. If you got one of these make sure to check for airbag recalls. They will grenade under inflation on the front side. Only con is absolute pig on gas as you said. I am at the pump a lot but I knew that going in.
You are absolutely correct ... simple and very reliable truck. I bought it brand new in 1994 (B2300), still runs great after 397,000 miles. Do I have to say more about this little pickup... lol.
just bought a '99 B4000 5speed w/ 185k on it a month ago. My first For...Mazda 4x4 I have owned. I know Toyota and Jeep so just trying to get it sorted now. it is certainly thirsty!
I just got one and it is so damn thirsty, way beyond what it should be. Everything is serviced so i might get the injectors cleaned ans see if that helps. Do you find it a little stiff to change gears?
Older vehicles had a key that opened the doors and trunk, and another for the ignition. This was for the sake of valet parking. Because two keys better prevent dishonest parking attendants from opening the trunk
Have a 2006 4.0L Ranger with 175k mi. Runs great, but also had to get the clutch swapped out. Runs great otherwise and keeps on ticking as long as I give it a little love here and there.
If your not running antifreeze in your coolant system and just using water, your leak is from the heater core. That era truck is super easy to change. If that's not it, remove the door panel and pull the weather guard away and look for the moisture. One last thing on that, the windshield seals go bad at the corners and may be leaking in behind the dashboard. I hope you have this problem fixed by now but I just thought I would give it a shot. '83 Ranger (wrecked with 197,000 miles) 2.3 4cyl '94 Ranger (traded in with 412,000 miles) 2.3 4cyl '00 Ranger (wrecked with 170,000 miles) 4.0 4X4 and now an '02 Ranger (still going with 245,000 miles) 4.0 4X4 I'm currently looking for another 1st gen for a ranch truck.
Thanks for all comments and support guys! I love hearing about your Rangers/B-Series. If you liked this video please see my latest upload!
since you asked about viewer's experience with rangers.. i bought a 96 2.3 auto 2wd. it was broke down and honestly should have been scrapped. my uncle bought it and dumped some money into it and gave up. sold it to me for $500 with the claim that it only needed another flywheel and starter.. it was replaced already but he couldn't get it sorted enough actually drive it. turns out the firing order was off, going by the book btw. the timing belt was also off a couple of teeth, also him. it was kicking back when it was cold but would start if it was above 80f outside. he also put a head gasket on it and a load of other stuff that had went bad from sitting (with a blown head gasket). didn't tell me that engine was full of rust and he had to "clean up" the cam and all that, it was pitted pretty bad, springs were thinned out, ugly. i got it home fixed the problems and then find the truck developed a miss. a compression check was less than impressive, should dropped a valve looking at the broken springs i found. i end up putting another engine in it and the trans lost 3rd and 4th like 2 days after i started driving it. i went out an bought a valve body assembly from the closest pull a part and slapped it in there old dirty fluid and all lol. she's been going good enough since. minor stuff, brakes, alternator, purge valve and solenoid is all i can think of more than oil changes. the trans is about done at about 200k pump whines and it shifts fairly hard when cold. the motor with unknown miles needs lash adjusters/lifters if you'd rather, it just chatters and can run rough when cold, i can here the "lifter tick" till the oil starts thinning with heat. i know that truck inside and out now and after all that, i still have it. it's been a trooper going on 4 years and some change now. it's pretty much my car with a bed at this point, work commuter. it's better than my 2500hd is on gas. only by about 50%, $20 to drive the ranger all week to work and $30 to drive the gmc. i suggest one to anyone needing something small to get around without kids. it's great, fires right up and goes every time but she ain't very fast. thinking hard on a v8 swap but idk..
@@blueovalfan23 that’s crazy! Sounds like you know your way around a vehicle that’s for sure. You should totally do a v8 swap!
Hey, I'm that guy that want a pickup truck just to listen to country and help a friend move when he needs it !
Yoooo I’m that guy 🤟☝️💯
me no country, HAIR METAL! lets gooo
Death metal and sofas.
Was the shifter tube easy?
You got it bro. I bought my 2002 in 2008 with 55k miles , and now at 190k it still keeps trucking along- absolutely no difference in engine performance nor do I expect there will anytime soon. Fantastic little truck with a few electrical quirks and definitely a few rust issues but other than that, just really can't say enough about this super duper little machine
Had my Ford ranger since I turned 55&shes still going 11 years later ✋🤠👍
Looks like you did have fun making this, you're very natural on camera.
Sure did! Thank you!
Scotty Kilmer doesn't recommend many vehicles but he does recommend Old Ford Rangers. Ive had an 1987, 1988, 1991, 1999 , and a 2011 I love Rangers.
I have a 1993 Mazda B-2600 extended cab......it has never seen winter and is in MINT CONDITION and 72,000 miles on it. Bought it new. Love it !!!!
That’s awesome. Can’t beat a vehicle that has been bought new and well treated!
The 4.0 engine paired with a Manual transmission is sooo much Fun.
I had a Short bed 4.0 5 speed in high-school. That thing got down!
Owned my 2000 3.slow ranger for 15 years....never left me stranded even with me driving it like a rental everyday
Man that’s impressive! And sounds like a sweet project it’s gonna be sweet especially with the 5.0 in it.
Have a 2000 3.slow with the auto..230k on it all but 80k with 33x1250 tires..can't kill these 3.0 rangers
Just bought one of these in automatic. I'm already in love with it. Hope to get bigger tires like yours sometime soon.
Congrats!! These tires are pretty cheap and I super happy with them.
What's the brand ?
@@anthonydallaire3397 They are mentioned in the video. Rovelo Ridge Track
Amazing daily driver.
i just purchased a 2004 2 wheel drive 5 speed 4 speed truck. only 125k for 3800 bucks.. i know i bought a great small truck!
Learned to drive in a Ford Currier 2wd 4 cyl predecessor to the ranger. It was light, fun, and could take a pounding.
My first vehicle......Loved that truck.
I just picked up a b2300 for 5k no rust owned by an old man literally cosmetically perfect I’m pretty happy with it
In a span of 22 years, I’m on my 4th Ranger.
Helps being just a rwd and not having the additional height or weight of 4wd and bigger motor
Mine is an extended cab with a pretty similar canopy to yours.
How many miles now?
Got an 06 ranger with 4x4 about a year ago, currently has 168k miles and running very strong!!
I have a 1994 Mazda 4x4 with 123,500 miles on it and YOU ARE RIGHT!! It absolutely does NOT get the gas mileage I thought it would!! 🤣🤣
I like how the rear wheel moves forward when you drive off in the very beginning
I have had 4 Rangers, I still have 2 , a 1997 with over 230,00 miles on it ,and a 2005 with 172,000 miles on it. All 4 were great trucks!
I got a gold 1999 Ford Ranger 4 cylinder 3.6 liter and I’ve had it for almost 2 years and it has been good to me I love this little truck.
That’s awesome!! They are great trucks,
I see them everywhere here too, always a good sign if you see a vehicle often on the road.
Have a 2003 Ranger 3.0L 5 speed. 150,000 miles and runs great. Some of the 4.0L trucks have timing chain problems.
I have a Ford Courier 2.5l turbo diesel ( Mazda b2500) rwd. So far so good.
Same here, they're surprisingly capably vehicles. I did do a head but that's cos I ran it low on coolant.
Great video!!! I have a 2011 2WD with 24000 kms! She is mint and other seems like it hardly ever saw snow. Good Trucks! 👍
Mine is a year 2000 Dual cab Ford Courier with 4 cylinder 2.6 litre MPi engine. I only just got it and I am giving it a make over before I put it into use as my daily driver.
That’s awesome. You’ll enjoyed once it’s fixed up!
And a bt radio
what year is your Ranger? 2wd or 4wd?
@@toddbob55 94 4 wheel drive
I got a 06 2.3 RWD ranger 5 Speed with only 61K Miles ! I kinda wish I had the FX2 Level 2 but oh well !
I brought a 93 Ford ranger, 6 cylinder splash, 2 wheel Dr. Over a thousand dollars for repairs. So far runs good.
Leadfoot sir you are sooo underrated
Thanks! That means a lot 😄
@@LiamDrives just sent you some pictures bro
Nice truck..I have a 1999 Ford Ranger that I refuse to sell even though my F150 is my primary driver. Yes it is a great truck that has over 223,000 miles and still going strong. I have done nothing to modify it and except for oil changes and occasional tune up my Ranger is a great work truck.
I have a 94 ranger with the 2.3 4 banger and 5 speed. All its ever had done is basic maintenance. And it's at over 350k miles. Been very reliable. Still drive it 50 or miles a day
Crazy that’s a ton of miles!
I don't know why this video showed up for me, but man that vape comment had me rollin.
Hahah glad you thought it was funny!
Nice! Hold on to it!
This guy is awesome completely enjoyed his video on just a work truck hahaha
Haha glad you enjoyed it!
So Down to Earth and refreshing to hear the comical banter in the beginning! Subscribed!
I have a 2005 Ford Ranger 5spd, 4 cylinder and it’s awesome. 😎
Haha glad you liked it! I miss my b series. Was a good truck.
Yes my truck is a BEAST! 98 4.0 4x4 ranger xlt. No reverse , No headlights (at the moment) .paid 650. The best 650. I ever spent
31s were on my Ranger when I bought it. Later, lifted it, and put 33s on it. Oh man, that truck loves the rocks.
Nice. Did it have a lift?
I have a 01 mazda b3000 rwd manual. Had it for almost 2 years now, Good little truck my slave cylinder did the same thing, I had to get a new steering rack, and the brake lines rusted out so I had to get them replaced. Ahhh the maritime province's salty roads
2023 here...amazing how just 2 years have changed things. A 95, b2300, 2wd, base, single cab with sub 200k miles can go for $3k or or more these days. More for rangers, 4wd versions and such. Nothing is cheap now.
I just got a 2003 Ranger , and from the looks of things you must be pretty close to where i am in the Fraser Valley .
Nice! I’m in the Tri Cities
2012 4x4 Mazda BT-50 flattray diesel.
Absolute beast.
I got a 2006 B4000 SE its a beast and can get most jobs done!!!
I am having trouble finding some I have the middle seat that connects to the drivers seat with the fold down center console.
rather have the auto. The Throwout bearing in the manual versions are an abomination to automotive progress.
98 XLT 4X4 extended cab 4.0 manual here. Only 108k. Best pickup I've ever owned. Just got rid of the vacuum locking hubs and installed manual. You're correct, awful thirsty, but I love her.
That’s awesome. You got plenty of life left in her!
Got me a old 88 ranger with the 5 speed and 2.9 she's a beast no doubt love the vid brother
I have a 2021 Ranger and it’s good. I had a 1997 3.0 and it was great. They’re not the biggest truck on the road but they are tough.
I have an 2001 b4000 with 545,000km I do the maintenance but it just keeps getting me through life. I have other vehicles that break all the time, this thing keeps kickin'!
3:45 You have one key to open it and one to drive it because the ignition was replaced at some point
Your check eng light can be fixed with a cuetip. Locate your mass air flow sensor and unscrew the 2 screws .
Careful not to loose o ring. 2 internal sensors you find cake up oil from bipass. Gasses. Careful take cuetip and remove caked up sensors.
It was actually the o2 sensors!
Great vid. Loved the info. My 88 f250 had twin traction beam wasn’t half bad.
Thanks bud. I remember that truck it was sick.
Except for the reverse gear going out on the V6 auto rangers, they really are great trucks!!
Just finish installing a new clutch, flywheel, master and slave cylinder in my 1996 3.0 Ranger. Looking forward to many Ranger stories.
You are absolutely correct ... simple and very reliable truck. I bought it brand new in 1994 (B2300), still runs great after 397,000 miles. Do I have to say more about this little pickup... lol.
Have a 1999 B3000, Troy lee v6 3.0, it’s never broken down
just bought a '99 B4000 5speed w/ 185k on it a month ago. My first For...Mazda 4x4 I have owned. I know Toyota and Jeep so just trying to get it sorted now. it is certainly thirsty!
Nice! 185k thats got lots of life left!
Do you know how much you can pull? Looking for the year with most power and 4x4, thx for any tips!
'83 Ranger (wrecked with 197,000 miles) 2.3 4cyl
'94 Ranger (traded in with 412,000 miles) 2.3 4cyl
'00 Ranger (wrecked with 170,000 miles) 4.0 4X4
and now an '02 Ranger (still going with 245,000 miles) 4.0 4X4
I'm currently looking for another 1st gen for a ranch truck.
95 and up the heater core requires taking the entire dash apart. It's a PITA job that books at 7-8 hours
