- By 2009, Alphadream had finally figured out how to really make a great DS Mario & Luigi game. They would use that knowledge and experience to make the best game in the studio's history, and one of the best in the Mario RPG canon.

Mario and Luigi, we assure you, it is imperative that you stimulate Bowser's prostate to revive him.
I’m guessing the logic behind the pipes in Bowser’s body working is that they’re, yknow, “warp” pipes. So it actually makes perfect sense that theyd still be working in his body
I mean disconnected warp pipes from planets can connect to each other.
Such a missed opportunity not calling that warp zone
Midbus felt like a weird name to me, even by series standards. Are they saying he's "mid"?
And then I heard it as "midboss" and it made all the sense.
Also I don’t know if anyone else saw it but the lowercase D and B in the center of his name looks like a pig snout in some fonts.
@@Hyper_Drud Whoa.
I'm so sad Alpha Dream is dead, maybe they could have made a new series
Well it was commissioned work by Nintendo. Let's just hope Nintendo sees the potential and gives the IP to another studio in the future
Same
@@MrRiverJudeI'm sure that will go well. Remember what happened with Mario Party?
dont say dead say bankrupt
is Alpha Dream the Nintendo TH-camr? How did he die?
In the final is such a jam, probably one of my favorite final boss themes of all time
Yoko Shimomura doesn’t miss with her music!
Thousand-Year-Door🤝Bowser’s Inside Story= Being the best Mario RPGs of their respective series!
And Partners in time and Super Paper Mario being the most underrated
@@triumphfork9268 Partners in Time🤝Super Paper Mario= The divisive black sheep of their series with the darkest stories!

From what I know, Bowser's Fury status is also triggered by taking certain amount of damages based on your health, or the amounts of attacks you took in a single enemy turn (Dark Bowser's Dark Minion ball is an almost guaranteed trigger if you took all hits), it's a very ambiguous boost status alongside Sick (which he can only get from 3 enemies through the whole game.)
Although there's an equipment called Fury Fangs, it increases the chance by 1.5x to trigger the status.
Fury is also a "glass cannon status, because, while it DOUBLES your damage, it also HALVES your defense, so if you dont wanna risk it, curing it might be a good idea
29:33 They probably aren't called Bros Points because Bowser also uses them so that name wouldn't really make sense in his case.
BOWSER POINTS!
the remake does call Bowser's version of Bros Attacks "Brawl Attacks"
@@goomyiscute777 oh, so it is BP again?
Mario and Luigi have the best Bowser, while Paper Mario has the best Peach by far
@@breadandcircuses8127 yeah, this is something a ton of Mario media but I never loved Bowser’s crush on Peach.
@@breadandcircuses8127 I bring that up to say that the movie is the most aggravating in that regard
This is my favourite Mario RPG. The story, gameplay and art style is the best. I loved playing as Bowser too and the DS capabilities were used well here
i never had issues with the mic, in fact i think people are blowing too hard to the point the sensor doesnt register the intensity. I get much more consistant results by gently blowing into it. The sensor doesnt need much to activate, just enough to get a signal.
I definately noticed in mario kart DS that the balloons filled faster if i blow softly than if i blow in full force.
Or maybe im just lucky i dont know.
you're not alone, i also had a lot more fun with the fire attack by blowing the mic just right without making it peak.
had no idea so many people had problems with their mic, and was sad when they removed this mechanic in the remake cause it took away from the immersion of really playing as bowser.
That was always my problem as a kid blowing too hard, I also think it needs to be concentrated I noticed that when I blow with a more open mouth it doesn't work but when I tighten my lips and concentrate the air coming out in 1 spot it works perfectly
On the fury effect: it sometimes happens when bowser takes a lot of damage, not necessarily when fights last too long. It doubles his damage but also halves his defense, so its a kind of risk vs reward thing. And yea i think its mostly a cool little nod to his character more than anything
Yeah, my only complaint with the characters in this game is just Starlow being unnecessarily mean to our main man in green (Though I'm not sure if she was really all that bad in this one or if my memories of the next game are overriding things). I'm honestly surprised that Mario doesn't get more cross with her over this and she only gets worse later.
After playing the entire game again, I can confirm that Starlow is not mean to Luigi at all in this game, the Shroob cutscene is the only time it can be considered that she said too much but she even apologizes to him after Mario defended his brother. So your memories are wrong, Starlow in MLBIS isn't a jerk.
@ivanzone7538 but in both dream team and paper jam she is terrible to him. It honestly ruins her character for me, even though I've played this one the most of the 3
Yeah, Starlow is really only in Dream Team just to touch Luigi's face in dream worlds.
It's actually hillarious that I never had issues with the fire breath... I didn't just breathe into my mic, I full on *roared* into my mic. Like I was actually bowser, and every single time, excellent on the fire.
Partners in time was always my favorite growing up. I see that it’s probably the weakest of the original three, but the darker story really appealed to me when I was younger.
Same, I always like partners in time more, but I always played inside story more because I must have lost my copy of partners in time, even today I love partners in time a bit more but you can't deny that inside story is the better game
Bowser also takes double damage in Fury mode as well so it’s like that accessory in superstar saga.
Third time is truly the charm that people like to say. I remember getting this game when I was young in the early 2010s. My mom bought it for me when we were at the mall, but the game was a blast but then I got stuck at the carrot part, I think. It was a really long time ago, but I enjoyed this game. Bowser inside is my first Mario and Luigi rpg game then dream team was my second. Bowser inside is my favorite Mario game.
I’ve never noticed that Vineshroom in the background of your videos before, neat. It’s a shame Binyot has yet to play any of the M&L games past Superstar Saga yet, but here’s hoping he gets to the others eventually given how much he enjoyed Superstar Saga, Prince Peasley’s “gift” aside, I still can’t believe something so perfectly timed happened live, but that’s his passive for you.
Loving the longer videos. Let's get this man's Patreon to $50. I wanna see the SMRPG video.
Damn not even a mention of the challenge medal? Yes its annoying to get every playthrough (150 greenshells gets harder as my hands get more tired) but buffing every enemy stats by at least 1.5x and you have to sacrifice a bros slot to even wear it was so fun for me. The other challenge node gear was also very fun to use like the daredevil boots or the bros wear
I haven't played the original yet. But in the remake you can get the challenge medal but only after you beat all the challenge bosses which means you can't get it until the end of the game which is really dumb. I love that Dream Team has a legit new game plus hard mode!
@@chrisjohnson9542 oh it is a complete shitshow. The remake reworked the challenge medal to just be the great force in superstar saga. In the original the challenge medal can be obtained in plack beach as soon as the green shell challenge is available. I cut the mediocre stuff like the enemies if both the bros and boweser having speed def and hp buffed by 50% and 150% for pow but yeah. You also have to sacrifice a gear slot for it too. The reason the remake has ot so late is because since its the great force now it doubles all damage.
Genuinely thought that you had like 500k subscribers when watching, this is a really high quality review on a game near and dear to my heart! Great stuff!
I went to replay the game on my 3Ds couple years ago, only to be inescapably softlocked by my broken microphone. I’m still sad that I was never able to finish my playthrough.
58:52 so there is a way to speed this up. In the toad hangout inside Bowser you can talk to the blue toad and he will mention having a dream where he is having tea and he heard a series of button inputs. It’s something like ABXYYXBA which if you input those buttons here it speeds this part up.
I honestly love ur chill presentation and personality. U should be wayyyyy more popular
I've been waiting for a proper retrospective for years now, it was about time someone covered this game. Thanks!
I got this game when it came out as a kid and I was so excited. After trying for weeks to beat the carrot tapping level I just couldn’t do it and I ended up having to quit never beating the game to this day.
That snorlax gag got a laugh out of me. subscribed
53:51 Good thing that Dream Team made Luigi the main badass
This or original version of SS are my favorite of the M&L games.
DT and PiT are great too, but have more notable issues. Especially DT's padding and overall slowness.
PJ I don't hate, but I don't love either. It's very middling in terms of quality... Really missed potential, honestly.
The remakes are okay, I just prefer the zany spritework of the original games, and also the fact that original BIS runs at 60fps compared to its remake's 30 which feels so off if you had played the original.
I sincerely hope the series gets revived someday, though. I grew up with it, and it means a lot to me...
Anyways, thanks for the review. You did a good job talking about this classic!
One of my gripes with the remakes (which I haven't played, make of that what you will) is the timing of the music in the final bosses.
1. In SS, there's the moment where Cackletta freezes time, screen turns white, and her eyes indicate where the laser beams will attack. The original completely pauses the music for this moment, while the other doesn't.
2. In BiS, after defeating the Dark Star/Fawful, the music comes to a soft end, making Bowser's final five punches that much more dramatic. The remake for whatever reason decided "hey let's keep it going" all the way through that, completely ruining it.
How do you only have 5000 subs?!?
Your Retrospective Videos are great! I think I watched this one like 20 times
Hey dude i dont usually even comment on videos but I just wanted to say these videos are really well written and entertaining and the way you present them is really good. I hope you get attention you deserve soon dogg keep up the great work
I always used the excellent badge and bonus badge to boost my exp especially for bosses.
They most likely wherent called bros attacks because Bowser gets special attacks as well.
I have never played this game, and this video was still very entertaining. I might give the Mario and Luigi series a shot now. Thanks for your hard work!
It's 8 months later, did you ever get around to playing them? If so what did you think
19:12 "Inflate himself, just like a balloon"
...
I see what you did there
The "Giant" battles in Inside Story and Dream Team are the biggest reason I don't ever replay these games. I beat Inside Story once, and one of these bosses made me rage quit Dream Team for good. Don't even regret abandoning that game sadly.
Zeekeeper boss?
@@Hyper_Drud I think it was the giant boss after the dream version of the Massif brothers that killed my last playthrough.
@@K-C-D-A yeah that one. I thought about it after I mentioned the Zeekeeper. It was pretty annoying.
I prefer the 3DS version of this game because it doesn't require you to blow into the microphone with bowser. Instead, they have you touch the screen to have Bowser breathe fire.
I also like how the composer made unique music for the dark star and dark fawful fights because it is more appropriate for the action going on compared to reusing the regular boss theme.
I'm also bummed that you didn't cover the boss gauntlet in Bowser’s stomach because it's fun to re-fight stronger versions of pre-existing bosses.
Greetings, esteemed interlocutor! With the utmost enthusiasm and profound elation, I extend my sincere salutations and offer an exquisitely elongated expression of goodwill and amicability towards your distinguished presence in the realm of our textual discourse. Harkening to the ancient traditions of linguistic grandeur, I hereby unleash a veritable torrent of syllables and phonetic vibrations, painstakingly woven together to form the semblance of a simple, yet magnificently protracted greeting, tantamount to an auditory odyssey of epic proportions. Prepare thyself, for the moment has arrived to embark upon this formidable labyrinth of verbal gymnastics, as I summon the vast reservoirs of lexiconical prowess to birth forth the following phrase: "Salve, salutations, and salutations once again, noble and esteemed individual, whose magnanimous existence graces the electronic medium traversed by these lines of symbols and characters! May the celestial bodies align harmoniously, and may the gentle zephyrs of fortune and prosperity caress your every endeavor with a tender touch of felicity. I beseech thee, accept this humble and unworthy salutation, offered with the sincerest intentions and the utmost exuberance, as an emblem of the boundless respect and goodwill I harbor within the deepest recesses of my being. Greetings and salutations to you, O venerable paragon of conversational engagement!"
I fear no man but **that thing,** it scares me...
Great video 🎉
Ok, so I fully watched it again and here are my thoughts. I played this game so many times over the years, is my most replayable RPG ever and I think this game accomplishes what it was set to do really well, but to be honest, about the entire series, I still enjoyed Superstar Saga more, the world in Bowser Inside Story is kinda bland to be honest, with not a lot of people to talk and meaningful things to do, the inside world is a standout though, its feel like an alien setting and thats way more cool than standard themes like beach, grasslands, lava, forest that this game mostly have outside Bowser. The battle system is great, the mana being called Special Moves instead of Bro Moves is because Bowser isn't a bro so they made a different name for these points, the ranking system is good but grinding for Level 40 isn't fun at all, specially with Bowser who becomes very underleveled after the cage incident.
Mario & Luigi moves outside battle are underwhelming, I agree with you that they are just reciclying ideas, but they could have been interesting if they showed flashbacks of the characters who taught the moves to them in Superstar Saga instead of just simply remembering the moves like they got now (This isn't a stretch, this series is very consistent, Fawful being the forefront of that, I just wanted more of this consistency), but more importantly why Mario & Luigi don't have a upgrade for its speed? The Bros Ball in PIT was really fast and cool, they should have kept it, the game feels so slow without it.
Also the story is very much a mess like you pointed out, major plotpoints like the Blorbs being a afterthought, most of the areas have no lore or anything significant to them, half of the Bro attacks being handed to you in the last quarter of the game annoys me a bit, but despite all this I can't deny this game sure has its great moments and a enjoyable fights and because of this its a game anyone could get into and have a good time.
42:44-42:45
I’m genuinely curious if this works or not. I’ll report back with my findings if/when I replay this portion of the game!
Amazing video, as ususal!
"You should know the drill by now"
*shows Mario and Luigi drilling*
HA. I see what you did there.
This is the first game I've ever 100%
The video is great so far but something you said didn't make sense to me. At 24:22 you say that the main drawback of beans is that they're late game, which is true. However you said the reason for this is that M&L get drill in the 1st half of the game and can't leave Bowser until the late game, which is not true. M&L get access to the Pipe Yard and can leave Bowser before they get drill as they unlock drill in Energy Hold (which is when they're looking for the star cures). Beans are fairly late game yes but the bros. definitely don't get drill before they can leave Bowser.
BiS is an interesting game to me.
In one hand I find it fun to play, and aside from Superstar Saga, BiS was the one that I replayed the most... once in the DS, and once with the 3DS remake.
On the other, I can't remember anything about this game and I don't know why??? It's like I went into Castle Oblivion everytime I beat it lol.
At least I can play and have fun with it all over again, but makes me wonder why this happens with arguably the "best one" in the series... hell, I can remember more stuff from PiT than BiS, which I've only beat it once when I was 10 years old!
Regardless of that, I should replay these sometime! :)
this was actually my first mario RPG, I wanted to get dream team first but the shop didn't have it and I was upset, but then one of my siblings found a copy of inside story so I got that instead and I had a blast, even if the carrot minigame and the fawful express game made me very angry (idk if carrot game is hard or I'm just bad)
Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story: the original Multiworld game.
Of course this game was big and well liked. you could play as Bowser!, everything is better with Bowser, Especially when he is basically the Protag.
This video is very well put together. I really do appreciate how polished Bowser's Inside Story is, but I've never really liked playing as Bowser himself, and the game always gets dull around the midpoint for me because of it. Regardless, it is really well designed, and you've hit the nail on the head as to what makes it better than the others.
What I find interesting about its sequel is the way it attempts to retread this game's ground by recontextualizing its mechanics and polishing them. Dream Team is overall a worse game, but its structure makes it feel like more of a direct sequel than the other entries in the series. Bottom line is, I can't wait to see your thoughts it, both good and bad. Looking forward to the next video!
Dude I love your setup, the xenoblade vinyl? 👌
One of my most prized possessions! It came from the European XC:DE special edition- it wasn't available in Canada, so I had a buddy of mine import it for me.
I wish the remake of this game removed that you could get the challenge badge early on to where you could only get it very very late in the game rendering it useless other than making the challenge node bosses harder and the last couple bosses. I haven't played the original BIS yet. I go back and forth whether this or dream team is my favorite in the series.
Namco should take over for Alphadream.
13:23 I know it's a different game, but still.........BOWSER'S ARMS!!
Reviewing an old game you never played is the complete opposite of a retrospective. You can’t speak in retrospect without an experience to look back on.
Dont think i had any trouble with the train boss. I did play on a New 3DS XL though so maybe the microphone improved between models?
This is hands down THE best Mario game.
@breadandcircuses8127 Yes, it is
This is the very 1st Mario and Luigi game I played. I actually wanted to play Partners In Time, but got this game instead. A school mate of mine told me that he already had beaten the game so and as I was not in the mood to constantly read the text boxes I allowed him to sit next to me as I was playing the game so that he could tell me what the story and plot was all about so long as he didn't spoil anything. It was actually really anoying having him constantly tell me that because I'm mashing through the text boxes that I'm missing all of the jokes and emotional moments. I guess he got opset over the fact that I was mashing the dialoge that when I got introduced to The Elite Trio he told me that they work for Fawfull, which resulted in me actually reading the text boxes and figureing out that I've just been spoiled and so I told him to bugger off. After I had beaten my 1st giant battle my game crashed and because I didn't safe all that often it resulted in me rage quiting.
If they ever make another Marionand Luigi game they should team up with Sonic
52:01 so you could say Bowsers a smart-ass?
I will say, at least for this game, Luigi is definitely *not* trying his best. Mario and Starlow are constantly having to force him to help fight bosses, so honestly, I can't blame her for not respecting him. He's a bit of a loser in this one.
Ok sound off. Who here also put Mario on hammer duty and Luigi on jump duty?
48:49 “Oki Doki……” I think tgis is a pun….given that it’s not spelled as “dokie.” In Japanese, “doki doki” is onomatapoeia for a heartneat quickening (usually, it’s seen in romantic manga).
Still my favourite Mario RPG to this day. (:
Bear in mind that I haven't played Thousand Year Door... yet. Soon enough, I assure you. #SwitchRemake
This guy sounds exactly like antdude
9:06 superstar saga*
I'm so confused. How do you mash X so fast for the vacuum?
I did a lot of Metroid Dread speedrunning, I had to get really good at mashing really fast for that.
dude, youre gonna HATE dream team cus of all the tutorials, im playing it on citra with a fast forward feature (trade off being the gyro controls sucks) and its so much better
Lore of The One Everyone Loves | Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story Retrospective - ScionVyse momentum 100
When you talk about the future of the serie, are you talking about paper jam ? Because the company producing the serie went bankrupt, there will be no new games
3:52 is it even possible to emulate bis on wii u?
This game was aviable for the virtual console on Wii U, just like a lot of other older Nintendo games from the DS or N64 etc.
38:31 What does that symbol mean?
Wait wait wait, who tf was playing Mario kart ds. WHY AREN’T YOU DRIFTING
Can I just say the effort you put in your videos surpasses a lot of popular TH-camrs yet you barely get any views :(
I'm glad you addressed the train boss because tbh that fight ruined the game for me and I to this day never beat this game because of that fight. I tried both on a 3DS and regular DS and could not get the stupid fire attack to work consistently enough to win the fight. I enjoyed what I played of BIS but that fight alone killed any desire I had to finish the game. Even if I wanted to though I don't even know where my copy of the game is at this point. Screw that fight though.
Weird I never had much problem with my mic..but I see a lot of people here that doesn't have alot of patience...
Dream team was like the better version of this…
Hard disagree, I still think Bowser's Inside Story is the best in the series, and did alot of things way better than Dream Team, the mic was never a big issue with me, but the gyro controls were in Dream Team giant battles, Bowser I think is the most fun to play as, he perfectly contrast with slower but more powerful attacks to the Bros more quicker and athletic like attacks, the music is still the best in this game imo, Fawful is still the best villain, I think this game has the some of the best scenes and other things I like more in BIS
Idk if telling people you'll only review a game if you get 50$ a month on patreon is a great idea. 😅
The video starts at around the 5 minute mark
Honestly its good you went with the original as the remake... Apparently sucks on a technical level. I've never played it so I can't actually judge though thats what I've heard.
Mario and Luigi Bowsers Inside Story: Best on DS horrible on 3DS
I think your comment is understandable about the tutorial stuff, but you gotta remember this stuff is marketed towards kids and it might be someones first time playing the series. I myself started with bowsers inside story
I have to say it. Why is everyone recording or, even worse, playing these games without enabling the DS screen gap? Is it more comfortable to you people, or does it look better to you? I just don't get it!
Also, while Starlow is witty, is focused on the current problem and talks to Bowser, I hate her because she bullies Luigi too much, without a reason, and not even as a joke. It gets worse in Dream Team, where she's more of an asshole than ever, and not only towards Luigi. The "focused on the problem" thing becomes a bad one too, because she doesn't want to help anyone, no matter their situation or need for help, if she and the bros don't gain something in return. I like Stuffwell more personally. Yes, he gets less screentime, yes, his tutorials are many, but he's more useful and certainly better than a mean, piss colored ball with a star on top to have a bit of personality.
this may have been amazign regarding gameplay etc, but could never hold up to the story of PiT or humor of either of the 2 previous ones. Felt somewhat uninspired ...
Humour from here on felt much more dull...
So ths one is my personal place ...4
Starlo was annoying unlike the BAG in Pit in my opinion...
But honestly it felt rather boring and Not Special. The Gimmick was Bland even compared to dream Team... So
The tutorial-problem is not really a problem you know.. Just because a lot of people have played with these mechanics in previous games, doesn't mean that there won't be new players that start with this or that game as their first. It would be much more of a problem if there WASN'T tutorials, even for simple stuff.
I agree with this. In a perfect world, it'd be best for the choice to hear the tutorial to be in the hands of the player, but between oversharing and undersharing, I would prefer that a game do the former rather than the latter because it's less frustrating for the game to repeat concepts you already knew than for the game to choose not to tell you things that you would rather have known.
53:37 Which is why I don't like Starlow much; she's just far too rude to be likeable, in my opinion, especially as a female character.
I appreciate her sass, she would be more boring otherwise. Also, “especially as a female character”? Bro
Am I rxtarded that I created two TH-cam channels at Sept 2021 and Aug 2014?
Any game that brings back Fawful immediately loses my interest. That annoying laugh and douchebag grin from the first game made me want to see Mario and Luigi break the family friendly nature of the game and commit murder. Bringing him back was the worst possible choice for me. Should have left him on the cutting room floor.
Who ruined your cheerios? Buzzkill
@@breadandcircuses8127What about Princess Shroob? Her motivation to leave her home planet for new land does seem like a reasonable motivation?
