Civil Thinking well snap shoving KK is stupid there.... you want calls! Tank for 2mins then shove to make it look like you might have a way worse hand. Or slowplay it a bit....
matty dodd e said he tankked to help, him bubble since they weren’t hand for hand. Actually a nice gesture.but he still had a guy after h8m so it also might have been to mess with him too.
1. Stall the game a bit for the obvious reason that your own tourney life could be on the line and there is a 40k USD payjump if someone busts in the meantime 2. Stall to make it look like you have a tougher spot than you have, like (TT), JJ, QQ, AK Snap all in just seems so stupid in so many ways. 40k is still 40k if you are having AA vs KK or in another way gets bad beated
he was tanking so that another person could bust out before the payjump. because if he calls quick against aces, hes going home. 40k less than he could have.
Pobody's Nerfect he had the short stack guy covered though by a huge margin, so for the hand at play and even subsequent hands considerations it is irrelevant for him. In fact, his speech is arguably collusion: by confessing he time banked in order to help THIS specific opponent ladder up instead of someone at another table, he is guilty of collusion. Because of the unique situation and the fact that that didn’t happen (nobody else busted) nobody looked into it further. Had they, it could’ve been grounds for a penalty. Since the original 4better had him covered, tanking would be a legitimate decision against him for pay jump considerations for himself, which is obviously just fair strategy. He will be up against AA from a cold 4bet enough that it’s not an instant all in (plus if he gets called with AK or QQ or whatever he can still lose between 20-30% of the time approx.) so he might’ve considered folding, but I doubt it. IMO he was telling a lie to the guy saying he tanked for his benefit to make him feel better, which is still technically against the rules but based on the situation, I don’t think anyone would put up a fuss. They would have to somehow think it was a chip dump to Gerrits to seriously pursue anything IMO.
@@leftphilange69 Except the guy who 4bet had him covered, so he tanked for his own potential pay jump in case Phan had him beat (or called with the worse hand and sucked out). He's just telling Sousa that tanking ended up benefiting him too.
idc what the reason is, he tanked WAAAYYY too long. he has 3 decisions, 1 of them a 1% or less chance of making (folding). so basically it's either call or all-in. and as doug alluded to, phan has garbage a lot of the time, so calling invites him to suck out or bluff garretts out. i know ppl take longer than they need to make decisions at big moments, but nearly 5 minutes is hurting everyone else by not allowing them to see more hands, and it's quite doubtful it's gonna help him any. we don't "help" other players, that is shear collusion as zach said.
@@ketchup143 seeing more hands also means higher chance of getting coolered before 40k pay jump. Only person it could possibly hurt is an aggressive mega stack who was running everyone over. Phan would have snapped called his all in with AA or AK and would have got there. He could have called him with QQ or JJ and sucked out. Why play for days in a huge tourney and in biggest spot assume opponent has no hand? Tanking only helped his own cause. He wasn't doing it to help Souza so there is no collusion. You'd be a dumbass to get this far in a tournament and not use everything possible to get further.
its garbage.... even suited. hes not shoving for fold equity, hes actually adding incentive for other players (previous raisers) to continue light and and hands probably still better than 98.
Doug, as soon as he was eliminated he gave an interview to a Brazilian poker site and he said that he had 3 blinds so it was a good spot to try to make a comeback. That was his mistake, he thought he had only 3 blinds, he actually had almost 9. It wasn’t a technical mistake, he miscount his stack. Huge mistake anyway.
Gabriel Junio ok that makes a lot more sense. I thought he might have had a personal emergency or something. He looked exhausted, tired, and worn out regs4dless
Damon Hargrave I think he would never call that bet if he knew he had 9 blinds, there was only one player left for a $40k payjump, and he certainly could wait for a better spot
With 8 or 9 BB's at a 7-handed table, there will be way better spots in the near future to double up and get right back in the game. 89o is not a hand that gets lucky multiway; he needs a suited connector or a pocket pair or even Ace-rag. He picked a lame hand in a lame spot when he could have waited literally another 15 or 20 minutes for both a payjump AND a better spot.
Gerrits was covered by button so he was tanking on a 4 buyin payjump. Obviously the SB has no clue about anything going on in relation to the tournament so he further lights more money on fire by calling the clock on him
I really don't see, given the pay bump in real money why go in at that point? Yes, this is a bit results oriented history, but still if you know a real money pay bump is on the way, become a rock, try to make it to the next pay bump and then jam instead of going all in with a hand against a 4 bet.
Top content as always. Just one point though...if the game show is 'Who DOESN'T want to be a millionaire?' then surely the 'correct' answer is to call. As those who DO want to be a millionaire would do the normal thing. And fold.
Nah as folding would mean you stand no chance to more than quadruple up, which you need to take that risk to become a millionaire. If he folds here he barely ever gets to the last nine players. Therefore folding is the answer for not wanting to be a millionaire.
Bigga Winna Crapsa the logic being to become wealthy you need to take risks. It does fall down however because the risks should be sensible. You don’t risk in situations you are very likely dominated. You wait for a spot that aren’t.
Damon Hargrave He had over ten bbs left, could have waited for better cards than pure trash. He even admitted he made a huge mistake because he thought he had only 3 bbs left
@Damon Hargrave I know this is an old comment, stop thinking you know it all and go study more, this hand is not even a debate to any decent SnG/tourney player.

Gotta be honest, I don’t play poker but really enjoy your videos. You make everything so easy to grasp. I prolly wouldn’t want to be at a table playing against you though.
He says very clearly, albeit in broken English, that he took so long because of the pay jump. Meaning that if someone from another table were to get knocked out before he makes his decision, that jumps his payout up another $40,000. So there was 40,000 reasons to take a long time.
Souza really taking a few pages out of Vanessa's book here. Both men such massive fan favorites it really hurts watching them get burned on what can only be described as just very unlucky boards.
Full disclosure I don't play poker, because I hate betting my own money regardless of flop odds or playing the person across from you strategy, but I love watching the WSOP. Doug Polk makes watching professional poker hands more interesting than they already are. Thanks for the insight and logical assessments of the hands you break down and good luck to you sir.
17:30 the commentators are clueless. Hes not soliciting a thank you. He’s mentioning it because the idiot with 98o called a clock on him meanwhile he’s only slow playing trying to give the guy a chance at a $40k pay jump.
I dont get it, how could souza make the payjump just because gerritt tanked? if phan hade called, and gerrit still won the pot wouldnt souza still get eliminated?
Someone in an other table might get eliminated ( keep in mind there are three or more other tables playing and if someone from those tables busts than the 9,8 guy might get a pay jump , 40 k pay jump).
Doug can't tell you how much I appreciate your poker insight into these hands. Great to see how the pro's play and their thought process! Keep it up!!!
Doug I gotta say. I watched your video's when you were brand new to youtube and didn't think you were funny. Every single video you make now though is absolute gold! Brian B, I don't get all these wild "favorite" hands of the pros. I REALLY don't. Somebody, I forget who, mentioned awhile back the my favorite hand should always be AA. Not A8. Lol I noticed a few years ago, I win 75% of the time when I play this hand. IDK why. I just seem to. Suited or not doesn't seem to matter.
Usually, some of those pros have those hands bc those are the hands they won championships/tournies with or won big hands with them that gave them a large lead at some point in their lives.
I can understand wanting to shove when you're on the short stack before it gets too small to scare other players, but that just didn't seem a very good hand to do it, especially after a 4-bet.
So people tend to play tighter on a pay jump Buble, so you counter this by playing loose. And that can be countered by playing tight, or loose. Any questions?
"I really think you should've asked the audience. Those guys always know what's right after the hand happens." That might be the best thing I've ever heard. Well played Polk!
As a fairly new poker player.. been playing regularly online for about 9 months, I think your analysis of these plays is amazing. It scares me how much thought process there is to each hand but is comforting that I dont seem to think about the process in the depth that you go into yet ultimately my instinct seems to align with your conclusions in real time. Really appreciate your content Doug
Souza's move certainly didn't help the reputation of the average Brazilian poker player LOL. I think Polk used to salivate anytime he saw a Brazil flag at his online table lol.
You know what, Doug? I HAVE been enjoying the content lately and I have therefore gone ahead and subscribed. Honestly, I should have done it ages ago but alas - I forgot. Keep it up.
Hey, Doug! I'm from Brazil, just like Souza, and he is speaking portuguese between 08:26 and 08:44. It's confirmed that he was just on tilt. He said something like "I have no word to describe the call I got there [in the last hand])". He also said: "the price I got for this hand now makes me triple up if I win". @Doug.
He had just lost most of his chips on a pretty bad hero call iirc, but it's still a terrible shove. With 9 BB you can certainly wait for a better spot... bc literally any spot is better than this one. That being said though, I think Phan's move is even worse. If he's trying to isolate Souza, there are far better hands to do that with, and given that Gerrits 3-bet, he likely is not folding.
Love the usual content Doug but I think this vid could’ve been edited down during the portion where Gerrits tanked for 5 mins and nothing was happening. I do appreciate you throwing in a strange hand to review and it is definitely enlightening to see that Souza’s play wasn’t as bad as it looks at first glance.
All the previous hands they've been watching on the delayed stream have clearly influenced the play here past the point of idiocy, Gerrits folding his QQ must have been on Phan's mind. His tanking should be punishable by death. Interesting that he says he's trying to help 89 guy ladder....implicit collusion. Although I was hoping he'd fold the kings and rethink his clothing attire.
Yes let's berate the bad player for the bad play he made so he learns, adapt, and becomes a tougher opponent in tourneys to come. That's good for poker! This community is broken

Doug crankin' out content to surpass Dnegs subscriber count. Good Luck Doug!
As always Doug, great analysis, comedy and discussion, keep the videos coming. And good luck in where ever your pursuits take you. JC
I think Polk used to salivate anytime he saw a Brazil flag at his online table lol.
this guys videos are just great, thank you !!
That 4-bet with 10 7 offsuit on the button... something I do with fake chips online lol wtf
of course wtf, fortuneteller loses ,lol
You know what, Doug? I HAVE been enjoying the content lately and I have therefore gone ahead and subscribed. Honestly, I should have done it ages ago but alas - I forgot.
Keep it up.
Shit i picked B. Guess i am fish
Peter S here fishy fishy
cheer up! you can be the next Bachelor!-Chris Harrison
@Doug.
That tank from Gerrits is absurd.
No its not. He was doing it purely for the money jump which is without doubt the best thing he could do.
Yes agreed, So its a form of collusion then, we dont know how well the Dutch tanker knows the Brazilian do we
Not really. If called by the big stack, Gerrits was potentially at risk too right?
If Phan as Aces, it's just bad luck! I think you just go with it!
Wow.... I can't TH-cam anymore because I get so mad reading the comments and seeing just how idiotic you people really are.
Not going to lie. Half the time I have zero clue what you are talking about, but damn it's entertaining 😂
D - Call is the right answer for the game "Who DOESN T want to be a millionaire" :P
You’re originality is really something. Love your vids Doug, keep em coming!!
why is kevin spacey playing 98 off???
What’s the stadium at the upper left?
He had just lost most of his chips on a pretty bad hero call iirc, but it's still a terrible shove. With 9 BB you can certainly wait for a better spot... bc literally any spot is better than this one. That being said though, I think Phan's move is even worse. If he's trying to isolate Souza, there are far better hands to do that with, and given that Gerrits 3-bet, he likely is not folding.
my b, commented this b4 doug got to phan lol
Awesome vlog yet again.
Gerrits ftw, how nice of the my fellow dutchman to think about the wreckless fck's pay jump. not even a thank you :0
Maybe the wreckless fck thought our fellow dutchman did that thinking about his own pay jump. Phan was behind Gerrits and had him covered.
So, did he blow $40k by calling for the clock? Would love to know how much later the next player busted.
three tables moved to the next day'
oh... so that was the last hand of the day? I guess we'll never know :-(
He bubbled the final table
Always love the videos dude. Hope to be able to meet you at next years wsop
Gerrits wasn't just trying to help the SB, he was the effective stack between himself and Phan.
he didn't give a shit about helping the 89 guy.he wanted to help himself in case he busted.
@@tfu4434 thank you for having a brain!!
Mr Polk, great analysis as always, but did he consider scenario number 3 which is 3 better jams and 4 better calls?
Yes let's berate the bad player for the bad play he made so he learns, adapt, and becomes a tougher opponent in tourneys to come.
That's good for poker!
This community is broken
Berating only triggers bad players to play even worse.
@@beorlingo No it doesn't. If anything, it makes them NOT want to play anymore at all.
@@Original_Muffin well, depends on what typer of bad player it is. An overall aggressive donkey Will only be triggered. A fish calling station, maybe not. But you rarely feel the need to berate others than those "raise/3-bet every single hand and 3-barrel".
Ok, reckon you're one of those sweet calllers, since not replying. Keep up the the good calling away!
Really liked this one - thank you, Doug! Forgive my ignorance, but what does "ICM" signify"
Doug, I had secks!!!
good for you, Cedric
It only counts if she's above 160. Doug's rule

VAMO BRAZIL
Belgium > Brazil lolololol
Your boy f’d up.
Q. Seen a friend put a video up earlier.. BB has 5million+ first to act has 150k 2nd to act has 2.5million and my mate has 750k in the small blind, blinds are 40/80k and the diff between 3rd and 4th payout is £2000.. it’s folded to my mate in the small blind who has AK, he shoves. BB calls with A10 and hits runner runner straight. Is my mate doing the right thing pushing all in or is that a raise? Flop was K blank blank..
Thats sooooo fuckin funny!!
Were they ITM? What position did the guy bust out in?
WHAT A BORING IS TO WATCH WSOP NOW !!!! In comparison with WSOP 2010 or less what happend with NORMAN CHAD AND LON McEACHERN? SO SICK SO SAD IS POKER NOW...SICK!
Norman and Lon commentate on ESPN. This video was PokerGo, which is commentated by Ali Nejad with Norman or Lon as guests.
I've been wanting Lon gone for a long time.
Ali Nejad is really a very irritating commentator...They pair him up with Nick Schulman who can't stand Alis stupid off-subject comments. They are trying to create another Lon Mackerron/Norman Chad like duo...But the new ones are just too iffitating ..., but then so is Norman Chad
😂 nice content are getting more and more creative 👍
Isnt it hand for hand on pay jumps ?
How to weigh in the payjump? That's gotta take some time to figure out over the felt.
How deep have you gone in the Main Event Doug? This guy is on another level than you.
Gz on 200k subs
this video pure gold. so funny, good work
