There's been a lot of discussion about if this should be a black run so I have uploaded a video to discuss th-cam.com/video/LSwz46cG3S4/w-d-xo.html
Very nice all the best
Na that’s a red
It’s only near black with the bugles. The way you went down it’s hardly red.
What skis did you ski on..??
Rossignol pursuit 16
i´ve skied at 100km/h and there is no way the speed on this video is right
Franco Ferraris I was thinking the same
Yep, I agree
Franco Ferraris yup
with the smoothing from the GoPro it looks like 40km/h but it could actually be 100
LT Spice nah. I’ve filmed runs with hypersmooth and going the same speed and it looks faster still
Him: walking*
Speedometer: 30kmh*
Lmfao
Exactly.. very suspicious speedo, and I'm not talking about the chalet hot tub.
it´s gps in the mountains.... what do you expect
Looks like he is measuring wind speed which is why the reading is so high while he is walking/the arrow is pointing in the opposite direction he's traveling/the direction is off by a few degrees generally/the speed fluctuates at a high rate. Granted the title says his "speed" and he has a sponsored link to a GPS product so clear intent to mislead or lie. If he were really tracked from GPS the "ground speed" would represent significantly slower as you're traveling along both the X and Y plane of dimension Y increasing with incline and GPS would only represent change in X.
@Flightstuff Exactly my though aswell
Okay after doing some rough calculations I worked out it is actually possible he is going 100 km/h. At one point in the video he is going around 100 km/h average during 10 seconds while passing 18 ski poles in total. Rearranging the S=D/T formula we are left with D=SxT. 100 km/h in m/s is around 28 m/s so if we multiply it by 10,51 seconds (time taken to pass 18 poles) we are left with a total distance of 294,28m. Divide that by 18 and you get the average distance between poles, which is 16,34. If you have ever skied you will know that the poles are more or less this distance apart.
So he is going 100 km/h.
Does it look like it?
Absolutely not. When skiing yourself you know 100 feels a lot faster and that is maybe due to the increased wind noise and adrenaline going through your body. In the video it probably doesn’t look like 100 because of how wide the track is, the smoothing of the GoPro and because you are not actually there.
Also, the video is not synced correctly with the gopro speedometer, explaining why it said he was going 22 while walking.
I hope this cleared a few doubts and arguments in the comments lol 😂
I'm curious... Are you a mathematician or a physics teacher or something along these lines?
@@movingonandup322 you dont have to be a mathematician to take distance and divide it per time
@@icmi5974 And I didn't say you had to be. Honestly, I only asked that because if you are a mathematician, then it might make sense you'd do all that writing and math to prove up your theory. If you're not, then I think I could safely conclude you have no life and need to get one ASAP.

I've boarded this ... it is not a black really, apart from a few small sections. Having said that, it is a very steep red which frankly is sooo much better. Truly one of the greatest runs in the Alps (apart from the long flat traverse to the village of course).
I tried it and it’s like a really hard blue. Something like balcons actually is a black.
Skii'd black double diamonds , and this looks like a blue compaired to those , very wide , smooth, zero moguls, pretty weak imo, it's not a black
This is why I love skiing, it makes you feel so free. I had to cancel my Christmas trip and my spring trip this year. I’m so excited to go skiing in 2 weeks!
Beautiful run, but dude there is nothing black about any of this footage.
Check out my other video and the discussion as to whether this is graded correctly: th-cam.com/video/LSwz46cG3S4/w-d-xo.html
The rocks are black.
yeah - lots of very novicey skiers there
Those steeps off the right look luscious, especially with all that powder. I want to see those runs.
4:12 I went there and I believe this actually is marked black I just don’t know why
something is wrong. It shows 50 and passing slowly a guy who is cruising at leisure at max 15. max 20-25 at that moment
The speed has a delay
Bibba no, it is simply wrong for me
He rly isn’t going that fast tho because it’s in kilometers as well
It’s because of the FOV of the GoPro.
yea if you look around 1:28 it doesn’t make sense neither, he goes down a steeper part and loses speed
Oh wow , this brought back so many memories and the lactic acid . I’m 64 now and not been for quite a few years I do miss the fresh air , laughter and sleep . And the smell of those log cabins thanks . You’ve got me all fired up now ? I was a BASI ski instructor and at one point raced in the Martini championships slalom came 3rd back in 1974
this is probably the best ski video... just the noise from the wind and nothing else. No cuts, no cool music, no nothing, just ski :D
Me and some of my family go every year. We board the Saranne maybe 3 times in the week that we go and im devastated that this January we wont be doing it again. This video bought back all the good memories and adrenaline rush from dropping down that first cut. Hopefully 2022 we can get back there!

Some things never change, no matter where you go. It's not the run which poses any kind of threat, it's the unskilled flailers...you've got to anticipate their moves at least
50 yards away. This looks like a nice, easy cruiser.
When you're going at this speed it becomes much easier to pass people. They almost look like they're going in slow motion. I find the faster I go, the easier to avoid the traffic because the time in which there can be a potential collision when passing someone decreases and you don't have to predict their movements as much.
Woooo!!! That was great nice and fast but in complete control just like I like it. That was fun!!!!😅
Thanks for sharing. For all the Americans commenting, it's marked as a black because there's a fast narrow section at the top with a steep drop off to one side and there are usually 2-3 sections that get very mogully. The reality is that most of the run is a red/blue with a long section of green at the bottom through the valley. But they have to mark the whole run as black because there's no other way around the tricky bits. On this day, however, it was nice and flat and fast.
I actually got chills watching this, words cant describe how much I miss this feeling
Normally I don't like wind noise in a video, but in this case it perfectly adds to the sense of speed. Well done!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed.

Beautiful! The worst are those moments of the play of light and shadows. Then those who drive from forest to forest.
Love this track and love l'Alpe d'Huez. No matter the color, it's such a nice moment, starting at 3300m down to 1800, 15km of pure beautiful mountain. When, like me, you don't want to take the risk of skiing out of the limits.
You can conveniently enjoy deep snow in the fields right to Sarennes track at 1:18
Love the video - I was there a few days ago. Sadly you seem to miss the start of Sarenne - right turn at about 1:05 (several skiiers standing looking down the steep bit). You did Cassini and then joined Sarenne at around the 29 marker. I did the same - twice! It's hard to find the entrance. The whole valley is lovely though. I agree with most commentators - it isn't really a black, it just has a couple of tricky bits - I think its creative resort marketing. They also say it's 16km when it's more like 10 or 11km.
So what is Sarenne like? It could be a tough one!
@@bekind7083 really hard blue to medium red. Depends on the conditions

He said that its lagging because of a new update
the overlay is like 3 seconds ahead of the video that's all. You can predict his turns by looking at the compass so I don't think there is anything wrong except timing
Go pros can make footage look slower than it acc is
This brought back so many memories from my time there. the run looks familiar. Nice vid!
Thanks, for giving this good feeling ,since Jan 2020 ,I haven't skied anymore due to Corona sequels on my equilibrum and muscle strengh
I have never done the Sarenne in one straight line, but loved to anticipate your trajectory,
Thank you again
C'est assez impressionnant ! A cette vitesse, il faut anticiper ce que vont faire les autres skieurs. D'ailleurs, je n'en ai vu aucun vous doubler.
Ok, red at best. Mostly blue and even green at parts.
Ils sont sacrément drôles les anglais avec leur piste arc-en-ciel
Dirty Dan looked all white to me
Erwin Rommel lmao, that made me chuckle
Theres no green in europe
Wtf is red
That backdrop though! Never been to Alpe d'Huez, but certainly added to my list now
Brings back some memories of working a season there years ago. To those who say it is not a black understand that it this is the best condition you will ever see the run. Nearly every time I rode it sections of it were mogul fields increasing the difficulty. Same with the le Tunnel at Alpe d'Huez, looks easy when there has been fresh snow but more often a steep field of bumps the size of buried VWs. Also note that the video doesn't show the rather flat final section of the run to the lift at the bottom.
@Blindtomuk thanks for the comment. I am sure you had a good season out in ADH hope you had a chance to visit this year.
Wow. Amazing. Wished the video finished at the ski lift!
That is a really good slope, it’s definitely not a black run but the slope is just so flawless, no random bumps, just flat
I´ve skied just over 80 km/h and i can tell you there´s no way he reached 100
Dude it’s only 80kph-49mph. I’ve skied over 60 mph on our blue run yeah I hit 63 and it flattened out pretty quick but it’s not that hard.
I've hit 100kmh at a local hill (not mountain). TIme to up your game!
Ryan Sexton so what he was just saying the speed dial is not correct. Besides no one asked you.
Its wind speed look at the direction
In the video he goes maximum 80kph, I have skied at 100kph and even 120kph the whole speedometer is bs and besides the slope was at max a red and even green on some parts
I went down this run after watching this video. On the day I it was sunny but had snowed for 2 days straight. The whole run down was about 6ft deep snow and took me 30 minutes. Was so hard due to the moguls that had formed and the extremely narrow paths. I didn't have powder skis at all so nearly kept sinking.
Regardless of difficulty this is one of the most beautiful runs in Europe I’m sure
Doesn't come close to the marmolada. Now thats a real black one.

Thank you for sharing this amazing view!!!!!
Sarennes was classified black in early time when snow was not worked out, so you had to do with icy snow at the top, deep snow fields in the medium section and rocky straits down the mountain. Plus the track length. With the carterpillars, the track is rather red except for the upper section where you must not fail (cliffs on the left of the track).
The true challenge in Huez is the Tunnel, on the right of Sarennes : you go through a tunnel piercing the rock and then straight down the mountain.
Alpe d'Huez is such a lovely area! And so is the Sarenne, cool video!

It's definitely a black - as its steep in some sections and once it's been skied on throughout day gets big moguls. Great run first thing in morning - major leg burn when you do it in one go. Green section at bottom is a nightmare
The camera does not reflect the high speed and slope grade. But I’d love to try this run! Awesome channel!
I did this same run in January but forgot to bring my helmet on the bus (we were staying at a neighbouring resort) so I had to wear a chicken hat that one of my friend’s had the whole way down lol. Even if it’s not a black run, this is still epic
I remembered the run while watching the video. Great place thanks for the Vid
Beautiful! As many know, they use the same hill in many of the stages of the Tour De France
No, the Alpe d'Huez climb is from bourg d'oisan to the ski resort at 1850m and the Sarenne is from the glacier at >3300m to the gorge de la sarenne at 1500m, below l'Alpe but not on thee road.
If you want to climb it you'd better take good mountain shoes.
There are many aspects affecting the impression of velocity. One is the camera wide angle, the hight from the ground, the objects distances etc...
Its not that difficult for a intermediate skier to gain 100kmh.
Imo, there is nothing wrong with the gps

Still its a red with difficult narrow parts. (I dont ski slopes in my freetime, just working on them :D)
Steep sections and ice aren't the only things that make up a black run. The lengths of a route also contributes to their grades. Provided you don't take sandwich snacks every 50 metres and you ski the whole piste in one run it would actually be very tiring. Hence why it is graded as black.
Wow didnt know it felt so calming watching this..
1:11 Lol the narrow runs with the steep drop offs on the side, quality gnar gnar!
Well, to each his own, but crowded narrow trails are my least favorite place to ski fast. All it takes is for one yahoo below you to do something unpredictable for it to turn into disaster.
The only yahoo is the dickface going way too fast.
Guess you don't know about ALL skiers are suppose to ski in control. Guess your another snowflake where that rule doesn't apply to you. Just other skiers.
Uphill skier/rider always has the responsibility. You crash into a unpredictable kid downhill from you, you can pay ALL of the kid's medical bills. Doesn't matter if the kid changed directions at the last second. You're the one that is going to pay no matter what. If you had left enough of a buffer around the kid, you wouldn't have collided. That's why uphill skier is always at-fault.

This slope is actually pretty good fun, but you often get a lot of inexperienced skiers who just want to be able to say they did the longest slope in the world, but end up using the whole slope doing long snake turns in everybody’s way. Here, he was lucky to not get that many. It is still definitely worth doing if you ever happen to be at l’Alpe d’Huez.
Everyone's free to use the slope. People in front using the whole of the piste are "not in the way" they are enjoying it the same as anyone else and have just as much rights as you... Remember, you are always responsible to be in full control and if you hit anyone ahead of you, regardless of whether or not they do something unexpected, it is always your fault!
