    what fun. I work a lot on older bikes. So of course 1.75" width is not 1 3/4", and the 26" inch diameter is a different 26" for each. Some kind of translate table from you folks would be lovely. The good news is that bikes last a long time. The not-so-good news is that tech Tuesdays tend to cover today and tomorrow bikes, not so much the 'proven technology' (read 'old') examples that are most of what I see.

  • @bluestraycat

    Interesting video, and yes there are too many confusing standards. But I'm still confused. For MTB tyres at least, I know that if I buy a 27.5" tyre it will fit my 27.5" rim, regardless of what the ETRTO numbers are. Obviously a wide tyre will not work on a narrow rim, and a narrow tyre on a wide rim won't work too well either. Kinda common sense though isn't it? The only annoying thing is that tyres from different brands have different widths when fitted, for example a 2.4" from Maxxis and Schwalbe fitted to the same rim will be different widths.

    Still a little lost. For example. I don't want to replace my Giant Revel 54-622 with the same size. I want a less aggressive, narrower tire with a higher tire pressure than 65psi, so I assume I need to find a 622 tire with a smaller number than 54 which is the width. Am I right so far? The tire says 29x2.10 & 54-622 but when I go to buy a tire, I don't know if a 28" will fit since nothing for sale is in mm that I can see. I do know that my rims are marked 622-17 which is the reverse of what you showed. So basically I need to make sure that I get a tire compatible with 677 diameter and 17 rim bead width but it has to be narrower. So basically what the hell do I need? I am on the road more than dirt but have to go through grass and sand every now and then to go around obstacles. Figure this one out and then I will understand...

    IN India Vast majority of Bikes are of Old design (single speed some call them 'roadsters') and have 635(28 x 1.5) and 584(26x1.5) tire seating diameters. this is many many millions of bicycles. 635 more popular i would say. A popular tire maker is Ralston! whose brand(amongst many others) makes these sizes in heavy duty versions(rough roads) in India. the bikes weigh 40 to 55 lbs all steel, steel rods, rack. Step through or shorter versions woudl have the 26, but perhaps 75% are taller and horiz top tube and use the 28 inch version! These things when balls new and grease fresh and adjusted correctly, really cruise.
    I have some india Rickshaws with even bigger wheels. cant remember off hand their tire sizes!

    Great video thanks guys, I'm totally confused by my 37-406 (20X1.35) recumbent tire, A 20" tire doesn't fit because the 406 is a 16" rim outside diameter, so the actual size at base of flange would be 386mm, I wanted to use a fatter tire like a marathon plus but what size do I order, confused !!

    • @parktool
      @parktool  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The industry has not made this easy. If your tire is a 37-406, that is the common "20 x 1.75" tire family. Is your rim also marked 406? It must be if the two originals fit. This tire family is nominally 20" outside diameter at the tire, not rim. There are at least 8 other tire sizes with different non-interchangeable bead diameters claiming to be "20", but actually a different fit. You need a tire marked 45-406, or 42-406, etc. You can change with width but not the bead seat diameter.

    • @lindsaycantrell2612
      @lindsaycantrell2612 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks@@parktool, rim is marked ETRTO 406-19 which seems to be 406 diameter at bead & 19mm wide inside across rim, with a 20" outside tire measurement, Now to find the tire.

    my rim is a wtb dual duty with 19-559, the Schwalbe Marathon Plus tire is 47-559. It should fit, but the tire does not fully seat even using the soapy solution method, or the temporary over inflation to 100psi. I will need to mill down the rim bead slightly. The same situation on a Kenda tire.

    Very informative, thanks
    Here an experience: Same tire (Maxxis Ardent Race 52-622) measured 53mm width on a 21mm rim vs 56 on a 24,5mm rim. It seems that in most cases the first number on the ETRTO (MTB tires below 2.4) is corresponding in width with the first number of the nominal ETRTO.

    I bought a cheap rental bike that has 57-622s on a 18mm rim. Did they not know what they were doing, or is that not too extreme? The main problem I have with them is they bust cheap innertubes like there ain't no tomorrow, so I have to buy thinker ones.

    This is only about understanding tire labels. What's more interesting to discuss is how different tire sizes affect the ride & feel of the bike.

    @Park Tool, my wheels are 622x20 and my tires are 42-622 (700 x 40C). Does that mean I can buy tires from 622-20 to 622-40 ?

    ETRTO all the way. It's basically millimeters and since live in Europe it's kinda the way to go. That said, I do know what the other measurements mean as well.

      It's basically millimeters that don't actually measure the wheels accurately

    My rims: 622 X 19 ....I currently have 700 X 32C tires on them. My question: how wide I can go before it becomes unsafe?

    54-559
    26/2.125
    This is my current MTB tire size
    I'm planning to make it road use by adding 50-559
    26x1.90 slick tires
    Will comment with the review
    I was told to use 0.4 and 0.8 division to find out the suitable tire size for rim. Hope you guys know about that method already. It looks like a easy way to choose a correct tire size

    All four of my steel road bikes are 622 for interchangeability, ranging from 28 to 38 nominal width. I wouldn't run anything under 32 if my frames could take them.

    Can I put a maxxis tire that’s intended for a MNT Bike on a 29” GT Performer, replacing the Slicks that come stock?
