      Hey guys some quick facts!
      1. Every Island has a different level of isolation and progress, hence why the technology levels are very inconsistent in the show.
      2. This season covers the first 45 episodes of the anime, with some plot structure changes.
      3. Usopp is based off both Pinnochio and Aesopp from his fables. He tells stories to entertain and shake up his village. A big difference between this and the manga/anime is Usopp has 3 kids who are his "crew" of the "Usopp pirates".
      4. Season 1 is just thr prologue. The plan for the show is 6 seasons currently, but if the show stays successful, it would be around 12 seasons total or so.
      5. The current large sea we are in the East Blue is very large but very safe and normal. The Grand Line circles the planet along the Equator. It is an isolated strip of extremely dangerous islands, both civilized and wild.

also one piece world is no like "old pirate times" its more lot of isolated islands with huge "progress gradient" among them. some ancient up to dinosaurs and tribal culture some semimodern. and ofc all this spread across with sailors. so makeup, printed t-shirts and neon signs in sorta middle ages pirate age setting are common

That's not entirely true ... in the manga itself, they wear the same stuff most of the time (can change depending on weather/climate) ... but what they wear on the cover pages, that changes almost every new volume and that's where the outfits are from ^^

About the aesthetic and clothing : the manga is filled with pop culture references, in clothes, names etc (like the Freddy Krueger gloves) so it's all very unique, and not set in a specific time period, which is one of the reasons the manga got so popular : you never know what you'll get. Fun facts:
Usopp's name is a combination of the Japanese word uso, which means lie, and Aesop, an story writer from ancient Greece who wrote fables.

A note about Kuro's speed, in the show they didn't really have time to explain this but Kuro, the main villain of the episode, is not using a Devil Fruit power. He's actually using a specific technique that has a lot of limitations. When he uses it, it makes it difficult to see or move with precision so he can only really push or slash while using the technique. He doesn't have a superspeed power or anything. This will make the fight in the next episode make more sense as a lot of people who watch only the live action, often wonder why he just doesn't use super speed all the time.

Possibly a small correction. I've interpreted it, and have seen other people comment this, that Kuro has control over his speed except for when he uses his Out of the Back (Shakushi) attack. That's when he goes so fast that he can't control his trajectory.

In one piece, there is no time or era it is set in. They have everything from pre historic islands with dinosours and tribals to futuristic islands. So since pirates move through all islands, they use all kinds of techs including TVs. Also the techs are different from our world, like the snail phone. Those snails apparently have telepathic abilities and are caught and domesticated to be used as transponders and they are willing to work thus in exchange for food. They are called transponder snails / den den mushi. They can also record videos, so people can livestream.

Devil fruits are pretty rare. A lot of people just have skills and techniques through training. Kuro doesn't have one, he can just dash around, but not that well. He has to regain his balance after the dash, and can't see while he is doing it. Otherwise he would just kill everyone. I love how he adjusts his glasses. That is really iconic to the character. Before it is revealed who he really is, he kept adjusting his glasses with the palm of his hand. Then you see here who he really is and why he did that, because he is used to adjusting his glasses with the blades on his gloves.

The props used in the live action are reflecting the Anime / Manga and even though it might not fita "traditional" pirate story this is a world Eichira Oda is building and the further the story progresses the more of it is actually explained / put into context of the world itself. Oda is a master of world building and making things that may appear incoherent at first actually make sense much like he flashes out his caharacters and giving them motivation.

2:49 Their world isn't our world, so I wouldn't worry much about modern things from our world being in theirs. Their oceans and maps are of some other world and some other time that has nothing to do with ours =)
31:59 Exactly, they are members of the Black Cat Pirates. Buggy and his pirates doubled down on their clown/circus themes, right? Well, the same thing is happening here with Kuro and his lot. Kuro's claws, speed, personality, etc. are cat-like.
35:01 And now you know why Usopp did what he did. He grew up without a family or a parent figure really. His father was a pirate, a member of Shanks' crew, Yasopp the sharpshooter you saw in episode two, and since they went to the Grand Line, they can't return. Usopp's mother is like Kaya sickly, which is probably why Usopp is drawn to her. Usopp truly believed that if his father returned his mother would get better and that he could finally be like all the other children on the island who grew up with a family.
It seems pretty clear that Usopp grew up with his delusions of grandeur and he can't let them go because that's all he's got--everyone else on the Island hates him ='( Kaya at least fancies his stories, since she's sickly and has no friends of her own, Usopp's stories allows her to live adventures outside her estate. Both of their stories are very sad.
35:12 No, he doesn't. He lives in his own prison of his own mind. Usopp needs to leave and have actual adventures so that he can actually start living.

In the One Piece universe there are people who does have super powers without necessarily eat a Devil fruit, the show will clearly say when a Devil Fruit user appears, Luffy and Buggy clearly said on early episodes.
Also the pirate crew names usually describe some superpowers/characteristics of the crew,
the Black Cat Pirates for instance, as the name say, they have "cat characteristics", (Fast, silent, well groomed, etc..)
that's why they were hissing when Usopp was running, and the buttler is so well groomed that Mason said that he looks like plastic.
some other crew names are funny to see how they were presented on the Anime/Manga.

If you noticed in episode 2 in the beginning, when nami opened the safe, along with the map, there is a wanted poster rolled up with a clear name of Kuro and a bounty of 16,000,000 berry bounty, when nami picked up the map, you can see zoro picking up the scroll but was not shown that zoro opened it... so you can see here that zoro is skeptical of Klahador a.k.a. Kuro...
Also, during in episode 1, when captain morgan's arm was shown with scars, that is from kuro, and saying he killed kuro which was a lie, thus keeping his bounty on the safe...
And another thing: if you noticed the way Kuro fixes his glasses, he uses his palm, it became a habit because during the time he was still a captain, he always use that cat claw gloves so when he fixes his glasses, he used his palm...
Again, not all characters you see here are devil fruit user, in One Piece world, people can attain abilites and skills through rigorous training, there are people who are more stronger than devil fruit eater...

The game garp and corby are playing is called Go in japan, wei qi in china and Baduk in Korea. People like to compare it to chess, but it is a whole lot more abstract and complex than that. You can learn the rules in a matter of minutes, but it will take you a lifetime to get good at the game.
The goal here is to claim territory on the board and exert influence from it. You need to strike the right ballance between not outstretching beyond your means and securing what you already have, because territories can be lost and stones taken. I'd say it takes the average person about a month of playing daily to start using their heads in this, so Corby beating Garp, a man with a significant amount of life experience in a speed game, which relies heavily on experience , is a testament to how quick his mind and intuition works.
It's a game that requires you to think 10 steps ahead. and because it is so abstract, in multiple variations. Unless Garp is really terrible at it, he should have tore corby a new one. There would have been no stone of his left on the board.

the cool thing about Usopp's character is that he is supposed to be the one that your average person can relate to because he's the most human. he doesn't have flashy powers, he wants to run away whenever they're in danger, and his shortcomings are more obvious to the audience. because of that, people tend to think he's annoying in the beginning of the story, but that also makes his character growth more satisfying in the long run, especially when he has some BADASS moments wayyyy down the line (fingers crossed netflix doesn't cancel this after two seasons).

For some context for those who are confused or didn't catch it.
But Kuro is the same name that Axe-hand Morgan said he 'defeated' in order to become famous and in the position he was in.
Oh don't get me wrong Axe-hand Morgan wasn't lying, he truely believes he defeated Kuro, the problem with the Netflix adaptation is that a character in the manga/anime, named Jango, hypnotized Morgan to believe he defeated and captured Kuro.
Some spoilers ahead, so don't read further if you don't want anything spoiled.
However in this adaptation that's largely over looked, in part due to the limited time they were stuck with as Kuro's plan involved a violent 'Pirate attack' on the town to Kill Kaya instead of poisoning her. Kaya was a sickly girl in the manga/anime, but it wasn't due to poison. The Pirate attack doesn't happen in this adaptation, in part because that fight could easily be an hour or two long on it's own, thus they broke it down to two important fights. Luffy vs Kuro, and Zoro vs the 'Nyaban' Brothers (both 'cat pirates' zoro fights in this episode are males in the anime/manga version, though in this adaptation they seemed to have changed one brother into a sister, so more like the Nyaban siblings in this case).
Oh and a couple of things that are different between the Anime version and this, Syrup village isn't known for it's shipbuilding, that wasn't a thing in the anime/manga. The ship actually belonged to Merry, he designed the ship, (Merry also survives Kuro's attack in the Anime/manga adaptation), in response to defeating Kuro, Merry and Kaya gift the ship to Luffy and his crew.
Also in the anime/manga adaptation, Buggy and Arlong have absolutely ZERO interaction, the whole point of changing this aspect of the show bringing in Arlong so early, and yes it's early to be introducing Arlong, by the anime/manga's standards. Netflix only had 8 episodes to make this work, and they're trying to squeeze in something like 60 Anime episodes worth of content and context into these 8 episodes, not an easy thing to do. So the reason Buggy was sitting there and taking it was because they needed to create a smoother introduction of Arlong and (rightfully) introduce him as the big bad of the season. But BaddMedicine is correct in that there's very little Arlong could do to Buggy to actually hurt him, but they needed an excuse to bring Arlong in, and to keep buggy in the world as well so they didn't leave everything that happens to him off screen. Though this resulted in a lot of story changes, the spirit of the story largely remains the same.

Interesting to see, how fascinated you already are from this whole world building. The strength of the show is, that Netflix NAILED the adaptation of the anime. Yes, they made some certain changes to accelerate the pace. Mainly cutting some side characters, and therefore changing some plot points here and there (or actually showing things way earlier). But besides that, it almost is like the manga/anime. Like on a shockingly precise level, with many little hidden details. (Besides: my favorite three roles in this whole season haven't even shown up yet. And that's because these 3 are playing their anime counterparts PERFECTLY. Like it can't get any better and they even elevate some scenes.)
Hell, they even have the same voice actors from the Anime on languages like Japanese or German. It's crazy good, since the actors are all fitting very very well.
So the show actually attracts fans and "newcomers" alike. Nice.

I've been a fan of One Piece for more than 10 years now, and it is surprising how I keep on learning from this show. After all the fascination around the snail phones, from the people just starting this journey, I've decided to research a bit and found there is actually a story behind them. In the 1850s a French"scientist" believed that snails create a permanent telepathic link when they mate (Called it Pasilalinic-sympathetic compass)...
