      I really hope they do all the seasons for OP but man, if you guys think Nami's back story was the saddest of the crew, wait until you really see Sanji's...... I'm at episode 996 of the anime and if they do manage to pack everything in for the live adaptation, then you guys are in for a treat. But if you ever wanna check out another anime or Netflix show with short amount of episodes per season that have a wonderful back story and great action, then give Demon Slayer and Castlevania a try. 🤗the anime community will go ballistic

      Really want this known too - while not to take away from the way the writers here have helped to adapt it to TV/Netflix, all the major story points/beats and emotional impact written came from Eiichiro Oda. That's why it was so easy to make a great show - all of it was laid out already!

    While Bellemere's (Nami's mother) decision to not lie seems a bit pointless at first, really, as a former marine she knows fully what pirates like Aarlong are capable of. Even if she had lied then, they would've found out later anyway and then killed all three of them for lying. I think they mistook Nami's map drawing skills. Nami was reading books on how to draw maps not seeing just maps and copying. So she could draw maps by people's stories about their journies very accurately. E.g. I would go somewhere are say i saw this, I experienced this kind of weather etc and from that info she could accurately draw maps. There are no real maps in One piece world so travel is extremely difficult in OP world.
    So drawing maps is an amazing ability.

    Oda the creator is a magician. He can make you laugh one minute, suddenly make you emotional the other. He can be called a sadist because throughout the series you keep on getting more attached to characters that dont even exist. Not just heroes, but also the antagonists. Everything makes sense when imagined from their perspective.
    Thats why one piece has no villains, only antagonists. You would be surprised how many times these antagonists switch from being enemies to allies to enemies, based on situation.
    Thats just something Oda does so easily and perfectly.

    Nami essentially makes Rutter's. Which are a combination of nautical charts and maps. Back in the days a lot of land and islands were not mapped out fully. So they needed map makers and navigators to make accurate maps as well make nautical charts that explained the distance between coasts as well as the direction. Nami is talented in this. The one piece world is not fully mapped out especially past the grand line, so they need navigators and mapmakers to be able to sail to destinations.

  • @yuukinoyuki9064

    The reason (imo) that the emotions strike so much stronger in OP is that, despite the world being so fantastical, the story does an amazing job at making you feel like you're part of the crew.
    Arlong didn't just mess with some little girl named Nami, he messed with YOUR friend, YOUR navigator. When everyone backed Luffy to march into town, YOU are right there with them.
    A lot of shows are emotional but there's this inherent wall because you're watching a story. One Piece always feels like you're living a history. And so it causes the same sort of disgust you see when watching historical movies and having to reconcile with, "people really DID that?!"

  • @Aviertje
    @Aviertje 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +87

    In the original, the story is slightly different. Most of the emotional pay-off is the same, but Nami's sister knows, as does the village. There, the stabbing scene is not the result of her losing the money -she intends to regather it all over again- but because the villagers are done seeing Nami slave away for their sake. She's done enough, and they want to free her of her self-assumed responsibility, and she's unable to stop them from marching to their deaths. The scene where Luffy gives her his straw hat ties directly into that: I will go and protect your treasure (=the villagers), while you will protect mine. It is not about saving a damsel in distress (Nami is a damn bad-ass, obviously!) but about friends caring for one another and not being afraid to rely on a friend for something they cannot do on their own.
    They clearly had to compress the storylines a fair bit throughout the entire season (ep. 8 has rather little in common with the original material) but as a whole, the same story was still told. It is just some of the narrative nuances have gone slightly missing. The pinwheel, for example, is closely associated with the village mayor. You can actually see him during one flashback scene wearing a pinwheel on his head, but that is actually a permanent thing. Young Nami used to be afraid of him, so that was his way of making her smile, and he really was her father figure, which is a nuance that was pretty much lost in the live-action. But they still preserved the pinwheel in another way.

    • @jellyfishbeans94
      @jellyfishbeans94 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      Yea the anime where the villagers were understanding was much better. And they should also explain Nojiko’s tattoo, she did because Nami have one and she wouldn’t feel alone. And was Nami’s support throughout her life. Also give the creator of the orange+pinwheel a RAISE! It’s so creative to put two together and makes sense! it also ties to Nami’s final tattoo!

    One of the things that kinda gets skimmed past real quick in the LA is the one rule with Arlong's crew is never lying about or messing around with money. It's set up a bit clearer in the anime so Nami has every belief that Arlong is going to honor his agreement because that's basically the one rule. Arlong using Nazumi to "steal" her savings instead of doing it himself(or just flat not honoring the agreement) is a workaround of the rules so he can claim his hands aren't dirty.

    A correction: Zoro was not holding buggy's hat, it was his hair wrapped in that cloth. Buggy has really long, beautiful blue hair and he keeps them away from his face, either wrapped up in a cloth or above his hat.
    Nami scene was where people actually started to watch one piece closely. And this was just a beginning step. After that each character's story goes harder and the series keeps getting better.
    This east blue saga before the grand line is just a teaser of a trailer.

Not to mention very few ever come back form the grand line, and those have by some miracle come back and plotted some parts of it tend to be secretive and none sharing of their information. That's why there's very few of it around. I think part of why One Piece is able to hit so hard when it gets sad or serious is because comedy, goofiness, and fun are baked into its core. It IS disarming, and when you're used to these high highs it means that you fall even greater distances when you reach the low lows. And then, after you've really felt those deep, impactful emotions, those core positive elements of the show are able to bring you back up and prevent you from just wallowing in those depths. And, by doing so, it sets you up for the next deep emotional moment to flatten you like a mack truck.
    The original author, Oda, is a MASTER of storytelling. After all, he's been writing and drawing the same comic, telling the same story for over 25 years, and it's still incredibly good and more popular now than ever. And it is a testament to the writers and show-runners that they've been able to adapt such an immense story and be able to capture the essence of it to still be able to convey that story well.
    Also, in case you want to see how Nami's backstory played out in the manga/anime and through the hat scene, that would be episodes 35-37. If you want, give it a watch and you'll see why so many fans of the anime/manga were desperately hoping that they nailed these scenes. And, for the most part, I think they did. And it'll also showcase how dark and serious the anime/manga can actually get (despite the goofy-looking art) because, yeah, the live action actually toned DOWN those scenes.

In the manga and anime you'd see even more how connected everything is and also as a Tolkien lover, Oda is keeping up with this complexity I've seen no where else. One Piece also made me cry a thousand times probably about diverse backstories and stuff happening in the story and it gets me every time, even with rewatching or watching reactions about those scenes hhhh

    but thank you for your great reactions to this live action, I always wait for the day you upload these videos. :D

    The Nami crying scene is THE One Piece scene in the anime as well. It's wildly known to be THE episode of One Piece that, if you make it that far (wanna say episode 34ish?) you will be hooked.

    Aside from pirates, and people that work for the world government (like the marines) most people dont travel outside of their island or country unless they “need” to. Maps are only relevant to sailors. Islands (if they care) may have a map of the island they are on or maybe local areas, maybe. Having a reliable map maker is a god send in some parts of the world

    Yeah, when it comes to the anime, Arlong Park is typically a strong hook to get the fans to stay. Though, in the anime, it didn't reveal the reason for his supremacy ideas. The live action shows this early instead of being revealed in the later arc. It helps you understand why he became that way, but still doesn't excuse the evils that he did(Arlong, I mean).

    Appleton Oak, with the anxiousness you feel for how it ends, you now know what it means to be a One Piece fan!

    Arlong turning his back on his agreement with Nami was really messed up. And then Nami being held down by the Marines and stabbing her arm with the sawfish tattoo was so emotional. I haven't watched the anime yet but I really want to. The Netflix series was so so good. I enjoyed it so so much.

    I knew they would really like this episode. Even going in fresh, this moment, this storyline nailed the emotional feel and the tension building up to the climax.
    The squad posing at the end was just hype for the final fight.

    well, nowadays maps are cheap and we have the whole world mapped, but that was not only the case, and also is the level of detail and precision, think about it, the one with better maps have a huge advantage, you wouldn't just give away; this is also established in the first episode, the whole mess was just to get a map. Of course there are more common maps, but again, the detail and how updated it is are important factors.

      Yes, but grandline map plot are kinda stupid, its not really secret path, n arlong not really need that because he dont want back to grandline for moment.

    In the anime, this episode and it's emotional impact are where a lot of people truly fall in love with the story. And believe it or not, in the anime it hits about three times harder, due to some small changes in the live action.
