This whole space is only interesting for form factor and size because why would you pay so much for some of those models when you can get a refurb steam deck for less than $300
I love my RP4P which I also ended up purchasing because of your recommendations. And while it has been an absolute blast to replay retro games, I underestimated how much use I get out of it from cloud streaming! I exclusively played Dragon's Dogma 2, Skull and Bones, Unicorn Overlord, Hades 2, and now Shadow of the Erdtree on this little beast and the experience has been nothing less than exactly what I wanted. Absolutely recommended!

Yesterday I read RetroDodo's "best retro handhelds of 2024" article. It included devices like the Analogue Pocket (2021), Playdate (2022, doesn't play retro games), original AYN Odin (2022), Evercade EXP (2022), RG351V (2021), and Funkey S (2021)... but it didn't mention the RG35XX H/SP or RG Cube. And the article was published _last week._ So ... I just wanted to say thanks for making your 2024 list actually list 2024 products.
At first I was confused about your quotation marks, but then realized it was just an informal use case for one (about) and the other is you actually using the apostrophe correctly on a name ending in S, 😅
There are so many great Android based emulators - but I just cannot stand using Android. I bought an OG Odin Pro and RP4P. The performance is great - but Android kills the experience for me. I hope we can get some more powerful Linux powered devices.
The community keeps bailing out Miyoo, doing the company's work for them. Miyoo should have at least released source code, as required by the licenses of the code they're using... but they don't even do that.
Redemption arc driven by community. Similar to how the Miyoo Mini was successful due to OnionOS. No company (Miyoo or Anbernic) should be rewarded for releasing half-baked products. They should release their source code, or just use the same SOC as Miyoo Mini Plus. Anbernic screwed up by not making the face buttons of 28XX bigger. I'm waiting for the next handheld in this space that combines the best of both A30 and 28xx (hopium).
@unrequitedhate I'm huffing the same hopium, but I'm also starting to think they deliberately never release 'the' definitive device so they can keep dropping more lol
Odin 2 mini or RP4P Russ please I don’t know what to do or what to buy 😢, I only want to play ps2 horror games and smash bros melee and be not super bulky 😭😭😭😭 Odin 2 mini is so badly priced but it’s so portable and powerful 😭😭
Wait if you're literally willing to make unlimited categories and you can literally recommend every top model out there. I figured I would get it here. Five devices max on here and I think you covered about 15 😅😅🤣
i just ordered a Trimui Smart Pro from aliexpress for 45$ shipped to door. i have a deck but its so bulky that my one hand goes numb. and a lot of times i ust want to emulate GBA rom hacks. so deck was to hefty. the smart pro dont come in till the first but i already got my roms setup for it.
that budget handhelds video was really great, but I was definitely looking forward to this one! always great that you release several videos reviewing multiple handhelds with a different focus
I originally wanted to get an RG35XXSP and Odin 2 mini, but got the RG35XXH and Odin 2 instead because of your recommendation and I couldn't be happier with my purchase ! Being able to play PS1 at 480p on a device that I can just slide into my pocket has been such a game changer for me, I actually feel inclined to play games again ! As for the Odin 2, I've only had it for a couple of days but this might be the best purchase I've made after the Steam Deck, it's such an incredible machine, and the fact that I can play switch on it is just incredible. Your channel has single handedly made me fall back in love with gaming again. Keep up the great work Russ, big fan of your stuff !
If I have an Odin Pro (not the 2), is the RP4 Pro an upgrade? Should I save up and get an Odin 2 instead? I would actually prefer the Mini over the original 2 because of it's size, and it's even more expensive. I want it for gen 6 games, which the Odin does fine (mostly, with some concessions). But the analog sticks have gotten finicky, so I want something with those hall-effect sticks.
It's great seeing some recommendations with how frequently these things seem to release. I have been loving the RGXXSP and the RG Cube, which your videos and setup guides have been a great help!
Every time I am tempted by the Odin 2 mini, I am reminded by how amazing the rp4 pro is at half the price. Really doesn't feel like the price difference is worth it (even more so as a steam deck owner too)
Can I use the rp4p to play android games instead of my phone reliably? That's all I care about. Also I like its size too- odin 2 seems too big and is also almost twice the price
I’ve always enjoyed watching your videos, it’s the reason why I got into the Retro Emulation Market. My Favorite by Far is the Retroid Pocket Series. Of course there are other Brands but never bothered getting them. Miyoo is a Linux OS and I don’t have Linux. Of course Retroid’s Rival: Anbernic, that Brand always Released Numberous Handhelds that I don’t know which one to pick. It’s annoying how Anbernic always have Newer Ones that has Different Look or Performance. Finally I’m considering getting the Ayn Odin 2 which is Stronger than the RP4 Pro & has a 6-inch Screen. There is an Odin 2 Mini but it’s Pricey. Then there’s the Holy Grail Steam Deck which is regarded as the Best but the MOST Expensive and Biggest. I’ll still do some Research and Save Money while I’m at it.
"Price to performance" i would give to Odin 2 Base 🤔 299$ is 50% more from Retroid Pro price while ~140% in 3D performance and 80%~ in CPU (those are rough numbers, but 8Gen2 is indeed much more powerful SoC that you can also use to emulate Windows games)
@@jsb-619atl mostly on sites like nanoreview, versus, etc. They usually show benchmark numbers, game fps, etc. Those are rough numbers, but obviously 8Gen2 is way more powerful chip than 1100 from a price-performance point
@@jsb-619atl SD 8 gen 2 in Odin 2 is 1.5M in antutu while D1100 in retroid is 750k. Although I don't think it translate that much on emulation cause every emulator I tried works well on both devices (except for Switch since I haven't tried it). But for future proof its better to shell out extra bucks for Odin2. By the way Genshin Impact in max settings kinda lags in retroid but very smooth on Odin2 (for reference if you also play android games)
I think the problem in any case with Odin 2 is that it is approaches the Steam Deck in price without offering the same matching performance and the user experience of a Steam Deck.
An FPGA powerful enough to work as 3DS hardware would be extremely expensive still. I don't think people have fully reverse engineered 3DS hardware anyway.
I been waiting for this I have the steam deck and Nintendo Switch oled. So Iam trying to see which android I should get that’s bigger than the rg sp and H . And psp so I need just one more console
Going to have to take issue with the claim that the H700 can play PS1 "perfectly." Can it play PS1 WELL? Absolutely. But it doesn't have enough overhead to turn on performance-heavy anti-latency features like runahead without negatively affecting performance, and in order to get the performance it does get, Threaded Video is enabled by default, which is one of those settings in Retroarch that is marked "not recommended unless it's the only way to get full speed on underpowered hardware" because it can introduce emulation inaccuracies and, you guessed it, more input latency. Now, if you are someone who isn't bothered by input latency-- as Russ has described himself-- then this might not bother you and that's fine. But by definition, if there is any room for improvement, the word "perfectly" does not apply. Maybe that's a pedantic distinction, but in a roundup video that is going to be viewed by beginners to the scene, I don't think it's good to give them the impression that this is as good as PS1 emulation gets, because it's not.
The RGCube would have been my pick over the RGB30 if they had put the D-Pad on top and used Linux over Android. Also, the screen on the RGB30 is much better than the screen on the Cube.
The screen on the RGB30 is the exact same display panel as the Cube, from the same manufacturer and everything. The issue with the Cube is an assembly issue on Anbernic messing up and putting too much pressure on the screen for some of the current stock, it’s not the screen panel itself that’s the problem.
retroid pocket 4 pro and a miyoo mini plus has been my favorite combo of devices to own. Covers almost all use cases that are useful, and the blind spots are better suited for just using the og device (aka 3ds, psp, vita, switch.) it's hard to recommend a device other than the rp4 pro at the price. anything more expensive starts running into steam deck territory, and anything cheaper you're better off sticking to miyoo or rg35xx devices.
@@varunt5 Pretty straight forward and works great. I use RG35XXH as a console, and use my old PS4 controller to connect using bluetooth. I even hook it up to my projector and blast Raiden 2 on 90 inch wall which is great for my family gathering as everyone can play retro games and remember our younger days.
This makes the Miyoo A30 such an easy buy… not perfect but ergonomically better than the RG28XX. They’re quite cheap too so there’s no pain in splurging some money there. The SP is also a killer device imho. Those two are going to be long time musts.
Anbernic is really doing some good stuff. The RG Arc is perfect for genesis sega CD (saturn needs more power). And the RG Cube seems perfect for gamecube. They have a micro one, one for GBA sp. Just need an SNES one with NO ANALOGS.
I currently own a Steam Deck OLED and a recently purchased RP4P after deciding that the RP2S wasn't for me, mainly because of the screen being too small and ultimately giving me headaches after long uses. Loving everything else about the 2S, the 4 and 4P were on my radar and I decided to bite the bullet and go with the Pro. I couldn't be happier, even with the Odin 2 Mini releasing shortly after my purchase, which also looks solid. Overall, the pocketability, power, and price of the RP4P is still more appealing to me than the Odin 2 Mini, as well as any other emulation device. These two are my all time favorite gaming devices now, and they are perfect companions. Thanks for the rundown on your favorites, too!
The Funny Playing Game Boy is something I jumped on very fast once I saw the video Russ made. Arrived fast, easy build, and honestly, love it. Went all black myself, but now they have different coloured PCBs and all. Seriously, if you like GB and GBC, go get it. Worth it.
Waiting on the Odin 2 mini but I'm tempted to get a RG Cube for Mame and PS2 games. I'm waiting to see if they will sell them without free light bleed as a feature. 😂
Good video! Yeah, I picked up the Retro Pocket 4 Pro awhile back and it has been my absolute favorite pocketable handheld! I was looking for a handheld that went beyond the Dreamcast into PS2/GameCube territory and the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro really fits the bill nicely! The price is pretty amazing for the value of what you're getting! The only other device I own that I generally prefer is the Steam Deck, however, I never travel with my Steam Deck, so the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro is a great travel companion!
I built my FPGBC last night and absolutely love it. I love actually playing cartridges because it gets me to stick with one game. But down the road I definitely wanna get an ever drive cart.
that being said I agree with pretty much everything stated, I just don't have a micro handheld from this year to have an opinion one way or another. Glad to see my two newest acquisitions made it into the top spot of their respective categories!
Love my RP4Pro. Even with the shoulder button issues on pre-orders retroid's team had great customer service. So Glad I saw your review end of last year. It's my first and was the right choice
Would love to see a similar video but for Budget handhelds - TRIMUI Smart Pro vs E6 Plus - R36S vs XU10 - Powkiddy RGB30 vs CloneRGB40 - RGB20SX vs M18/R43
RP4P is basically perfect; no it can't do great switch emulation, but that's a current gen system where the library will likely continue getting support via switch 2 for another 6-8 years. My only minor gripe with the rp4p (that doesn't seem to bother anyone else) is that the usb c port isn't centered; this would drive me crazy when docking the system to use as a console.
Completely agree what you said about the Odin 2 mini, for that kinda of price (340$ without shipping) it doesn't really make sense, that's steam deck territory and you can get refurbished decks for cheaper then that. 300$ is kind of the sweet spot when it comes to high end android gaming handhelds.
I have a rp4 pro and the rg35xx sp. Both fill different niches, and I'm glad I bought them. I was surprised how good Vita emulation is on the rp4. Played through all of persona 4 golden. There was a weird camera glitch that happened sometimes, but it ran smooth.
I just got a RG35XX H and Im super happy! I'm using muOS and is a great CFW. I'm pretty new in the retro gaming but I think that the H was the best way to start!
I have the FPGBC that I love, and the exact same Flash Cart, but it crashes when loading the game from the SD card to the Flashcart EEprom. It works on a real GBC and GBA though. Any clues? :)
Would anyone here happen to have the link to that website that loads up a device's screen size and tells you what size a different aspect ratio is on that screen? For example, you can tell it like 4:3 on a AYN Odin Pro, and it shows a little example screen and gives the size that 4:3 content would display at on that display. I think RGC mentioned it in a previous video, but I don't know which
I import many of these handhelds from China to resell, so most have at least passed through my hands. Infact I have a bunch in stock right now that I'm getting ready to sell. That said I often disagree with many of the reviewers that take a look at these. For instance having held most of these devices in my hands I think the RG35XXSP is so over hyped. It's quality in my opinion doesn't feel quite as nice as some of anbernics other stuff. The buttons are a little rough and it's super thick. On the other hand the RG35XX H is really well built, it's bottons are great, it's super sleek and pocketable and the sticks let you take better advantage of the extra power that comes with that chip. When it comes to Miyoo, the Miyoo mini plus is better then the A30. But I thought reviewers gave the A30 an unnecessarily hard time. It's battery life isn't the best but it's really well built! While it doesn't have quite the power that anbernics devices have it's plenty powerful enough to play anything you would really want to play on a device that small and the analog stick is a nice extra. All of the hate that device has received has driven the price down to almost comically low prices at times. The software isn't great out of the box but it gets the job done if your just wanting to play some retro games. And as a plus it comes in a really nice case! In my opinion though the best device that's available right now at the best price has to be the trimui smart pro. Last year's trim UI smart was a piece of garbage in my opinion. The trimui smart pro though has to be one of the best all rounders out of the box out of the lot. It's really well built, has a really nice screen, the software is really pretty good.. even stock, and with the latest update it can play most PSP games which is pretty impressive for the price. You can get this one at times direct from China for sometimes well under $50.00 if you keep an eye out.
So- I own a Miyoo Mini Plus and I'm really happy with it but I'm wanting to get a device that I can plug an HDMI cable into so I can record the games I play. Does anybody have any recommendations for this?
Got a Retroid Pocket 4 pro and it's an excellent system. Sometimes, people don't like to think they've bought a duffer, so will big it up. But here, after about 5 months of use, this isn't the case. I agree the screen could be a little bit bigger, it's not 100% comfortable in my hands and the controls aren't perfect, but overall, it's definitely a 9.5/10 for me.
I don't get the appeal of the RG cube. The RG405m seems like a better device by almost every measure. It's been my favourite device for a while now, and after years of buying every new device, it's the first one that has just held the crown for an extended period, yet seems to get really overlooked.
When you read this comment Anbernic will have released a new handheld.

RG 353M
Trimui Smart Pro
man, I've noticed you're really not a fan of the analogue pocket.
For anyone on the edge I bought a retroid pocket 4 pro when it released and haven’t regretted it one bit.
Anbernic is really doing some good stuff. The RG Arc is perfect for genesis sega CD (saturn needs more power). And the RG Cube seems perfect for gamecube. They have a micro one, one for GBA sp. Just need an SNES one with NO ANALOGS.
We need a powkiddy rgb30 with a touch screen. Same specs. Just a touch screen. It would make ds amazing on it.
I'm enjoying the RG35XX H. Ordered it after i saw your videos. It's been really fun playing the games from my childhood. Thanks for the reviews :)
I'm not enjoying RG35xx-H. Mine was a lemon and two months later, still no refund.
Amazing handheld, I think it's THE entry point for this hobby.
Well I know what I'm doing on my lunch break
The Funny Playing Game Boy is something I jumped on very fast once I saw the video Russ made.
Arrived fast, easy build, and honestly, love it. Went all black myself, but now they have different coloured PCBs and all. Seriously, if you like GB and GBC, go get it. Worth it.
I like this product. I'm hoping they do a GBA version, they already have the mobos and shells, they just need the chips and ram.
12:26 what launcher for rg556?
Gamma as fixed the RG Cube analog problem ;) great video btw Russ ;)
"hey everybody this is Ruster Metro gamecore"
...I'm sorry, couldn't help but point it out. 😇
Might as well get a steam deck if you are thinking of splashing 340 on a odin2
I built my FPGBC last night and absolutely love it. I love actually playing cartridges because it gets me to stick with one game. But down the road I definitely wanna get an ever drive cart.
I hesitate betweek the retroid 4 pro and the lcd steam deck (on sale now), retroid is cheaper but steam deck seems easier to use.
For me, the best will always be the Miyoo mini and a cracked New 3ds xl
It’s unbelievable we made it halfway through the year without a Retroid Flip 2 or AYN Flip. I really need it in my life.
Because horizontal devices with LED lights are the new hot
$175 for the rg556 is crazy
Man I bet that took a bit to shoot this video
My favorite is still the PS Vita ... oh wait...
Hope we start seeing more Amoled screens.
the Cube has a “unique” 720p 1:1 display? not quite true
the rp4p was a great system but after getting the odin 2 I never touch it anymore
I see a Retro Game Corps video, I click
that being said I agree with pretty much everything stated, I just don't have a micro handheld from this year to have an opinion one way or another. Glad to see my two newest acquisitions made it into the top spot of their respective categories!
Those companies need to start using higher resolution screens that justify filters and shaders.
The Retroid Pocket 4 Pro has completely replaced by cell phone. It’s kind of wild what it does for $200ish
Love my RP4Pro. Even with the shoulder button issues on pre-orders retroid's team had great customer service. So Glad I saw your review end of last year. It's my first and was the right choice
Cant wait to watch this when I get home 😁
I really think you should do a revisit video for the A30. That thing deserves more love. As always, great content, Russ.
Is the Odin 2 still your favotire device?

I’m satisfied with my 405M which came out last year.
Picked up my first retro handheld last week (an r36s I'm calling the GameGal) and found your channel while working on getting it set up just right. ❤
I only have a Retroid Pocket 4 Pro and I guess I should just stick with that for now. 😂
If I get the odin 1 would it be ok for ps1 and under
Killed it with this video. Been thinking of picking up one of these systems and this video made so easier to decide. Thank you kindly 🙏🏽
I love my Watermelon colored Retroid Pocket 4 Pro. I've been playing so many great games this year because of it!
I’m trying to install Rocknix on my 35xx h and their website doesn’t have a firmware for it, which install package do I use ?
So- I own a Miyoo Mini Plus and I'm really happy with it but I'm wanting to get a device that I can plug an HDMI cable into so I can record the games I play. Does anybody have any recommendations for this?
honestly all i need in a handheld is wii u and switch emulation
Now that we’re halfway through time to give up on are resolutions
need RG Cube guide!
