You are the first one that has a black one on YT. I wanted a blue one, but the black seems more polite and modest. The blue one is hot and vibrant and kinda gets in a way. Would have loved on the black color buttons with the letters on color too.
Same bro. I have the Anbernic website page saved in my tabs with the sp in my cart ready to buy. I just haven't pulled the trigger yet. Watching all reviews till than lol
I've never commented on any of your videos but you make my favorite tech reviews in TH-cam. They are so detailed and the production quality is the best out there. Thank you!
Found this channel while watching videos reinforcing my purchase of this device. Instant subscription. Love the music, the voice and the in-depth aspect of the review 👍.
Just so you know @retrotechdad, I saw that you can press the side button on the unit to swap between analog and d-pad inputs on the fly, removing the need to go in and rebind controls!
On the sleep/power off deal. I added the stock mod option and set it to sleep on lid close and safe shutdown on a single press of the power button. Enables me to quickly shutdown if I won't be going back for awhile and still use "sleep" function if I'll be back in a few minutes. Best of both worlds in my opinion.
Hi Techy Dad first off I just want to say thank you for tearing down the device. We just love it and second of all keep up the awesome work you do amazing videos love love love and I always look forward to seeing you on Mondays on the podcast live👍🏼💙
I ordered mine in Silver 128gb and it cost less than $80. Im excited!!! I have the RG35xx and wanted the plus but didn't want two of the same. Now I'll have a similar device but better and easier to carry without worrying about breaking my screen. I never had a Gameboy growing up and so this is really exciting to me.
Why would you order 128gb? The included microSD is a generic junk card that belongs in the trash. It will fail quickly. You should buy a reputable microSD like Sandisk
I've never had a retro emulator handheld. But I've always enjoyed watching videos like these. This will be my 1st device, and I'm really excited. My original SP is broken and wanted to replace it for a long time. I also got the original gameboy and color. But changing those old AA batteries every time I want to play is a drag. This is going to replace all of them.
Very cool and welcome to the retro handheld community! The SP is a great first choice especially if you're looking to replace your original GBA SP. Thank you for watching and commenting! 🙏🤗
Got the transparent green model a few weeks ago and hardly put it down since. The form factor matters. Build quality feels nice, deep sleep works, stock OS works just fine and it looks super cool. I've had multiple random people approach me about it, enthused to see something they also remember from their childhood. If you're thinking about getting one, take the plunge, but try to order one of the new colours and that way you can guarantee you're getting the revised edition.
I'm more excited to get this than any other handheld on the horizon. You'll never believe me when I tell you, but I went for the Gameboy DMG colour scheme 🤯
Damn the buttons are super loud. Hope it can get resolved through swapping out the buttons. Thanks for the extensive review!!! Placed my order on the 17th
That's so weird, buttons here don't sound THAT loud. I ended up not buying it just because Russ and others mentioned that buttons are very stiff and loud. They didn't say anything about RP Flip's buttons for example, and I found those buttons to be VERY loud and slightly hard to press, so when I saw Russ complaining about SP buttons I decided not to buy one. So how are these buttons compared to Flips (if you have one)? I mean face buttons, dpad and maybe shoulders?
Can you please clarify if you actually tested USB-C to USB-C cable charging support like you mentioned at 2:15 in the video? Taki Udon's video claimed that C to C charging was specifically NOT supported and showed it hooked up to a tester to visually display its inability to charge via C to C cable unlike other devices on the market which could when he plugged the tester into them. It's not a make or break feature, but it would be nice to know the facts. Thanks for the super detailed and in depth video. It was a great watch!
I used two different cables and adapters that used USB C to C and it had no issues. 🙏 It’s specifically rated for 5V 1.5a. Thank you for the kind words as well, I really appreciate it! 🙏
@@retrotechdad thanks for the quick reply. Upon re-review of Taki's video, he mentioned C to C "PD" charger blocks and the 35XXSP's inability to recognize them for even just the 5v line. The confusion was entirely on my end. 😅
@@retrotechdad Agreed and I went with Silver and OG GB grey. I just can't dig transparent but it's a personal choice as usual lad. I think with the exception of the RG350, this is the finest design Anbernic has pulled off and luckily for Retroid, it's in a different price bracket and practical use case than the RP4 given both respective form factors.
Does the quick shutdown/sleep feature work when the ROMs and OS are on separate SD cards? Someone on reddit said they needed to be on the same SD, but I couldn't find anything to back that up.
@@retrotechdad yeah, sounded like you were excited. There’s several reasons I’m happy for it. I didn’t think I would want another handheld after the Odin 2, but then this came out. Figured I was good with SD at the house, Odin 2 when going away for a long time and RP Flip when traveling locally… But man… Couldn’t help myself but order as soon as it was available. I even woke up super early to get it. Thing that sucks is that it says my ETA is June 1st, but I literally ordered 15 minutes after it was available and even now it still shows May 25th-June… But yet it gave me June 1st. Boo! lol
I think this is going to be crazy popular for Anbernic. It's been a while since I've seen this much excitement for a device. I like these more specific use case devices, I think many are just gonna grab one as a way to enjoy GBA even if it can be done on so many handhelds.
@@retrotechdad oh yeah! This is really for those people that grew up with it. But I got it because I like the portability and no need for a case. Perfect for when I’m with my dad at his doctor’s appointments and I’m in the waiting room so I can just pull it out, game and toss it back in my pocket when he’s done. I used my RPF for that before the dpad and triggers broke lol
39:09 Ever since the PLUS came out, these stick-less units always had a built-in quick remap feature where you tap the power button to switch the D-pad to simulated analog stick. Works in RetroArch N64 cores and Dreamcast cores at the very least. It's a shame they didn't tell you this in the user manual, but the official demo video showed this feature. And it's also a shame that no community firmware devs have implemented this, but that might be why stock OS had to use Ubuntu as the underlying linux base.
39:23 Wave Race 64 itself is letterboxed by default. If you see some CRT footage, it artificially fills up the screen's top and bottom with black bars. This is unavoidable in an emulation window unless you manually adjust the zoom.
I'm one of the people who had ngage v2 with Tony Hawk and tomb raider from launch still have it in great condition haha got it knowing PSP was coming out soon and never knew anyone else with one. I just bought this SP hyped to know ngage games work there's a rare elder scrolls I want to revisit.
Anbernic did address the need to map the dpad to an abalog stick, at least for my rg35xxPlus - in the emulators that need this pressing the power button toggles mapping of dpad to stick and back
Awesome video. Can you tell me where you go the STL file for the gameboy logo? Did you make it yourself, if so is it available anywhere, for sale (the stl?). Thanks! - I ordered clear blue.
@@retrotechdad I also subbed. really enjoyed the deep dive and thanks so much for responding so fast with that model! I can't wait to print it! Hope you're having a great day!
I have the grey (GameBoy theme) version. I'm thinking of getting an extra shell and paint it GBC yellow. Hits home for me, cause I had the yellow GBC and yellow cartridges, and lots of good memories..
Does it have a vertical arcade mode that flips the game and controls for vertical shoot em ups? I love this mode on my Rg35xxh. Not sure how the controls would be in vertical mode
Awesome question! Yes, it still has the vertical arcade category but the games are using bezels in landscape and it's not in vertical orientation. That's actually one of my favorite things to do over on the 28XX since it's in TATE mode.
I ordered directly from Abernic and didn't see the case option. Maybe it was just for reviewers or it's included? I'll mostly have my SP in my pocket so I won't really use it anyway just weird how it wasn't listed.
That is weird, I have a link to it directly in my description. They might be able to add it to your order if you e-mail them. I agree through, the best part about it being a clamshell is that you don't need to worry about that as much!
I'm getting the Blue Transparent. It has been in the US 6 days, sitting through customs and still hasn't shipped. So frustrating. I should have just ordered from a US seller, there are a few that have them in stock and I'd only paid $3 bucks more that what I paid to get it directly from Anbernic. Oh well, you live you learn.

Haven't picked up my Steamdeck since I got mind. I regret getting it in Silver. The transparent black looks better in the videos/ pics I have seen than they do on the website.
Great review as always. Love the form factor of this device but I think I'm going to wait for the second batch in case there's issues in the first batch that need to be ironed and hopefully while I wait, Miyoo releases the flip. I've been going back and forth on the Miyoo flip and the Anbernic SP
It looks like they put out a notice to expect additional time (3-5 business days) to process since it's been very popular. They usually have a pretty fast turn around time (~ 2 weeks) but I'd expect it to be longer now.
@retrotechdad cool, thanks. Now the waiting begins... It has arrived! I was not prepared for how awesome this thing is. GBA games on it are incredible. It would honestly be worth it for just that.
I didn’t need to buy this I already have the deck and some other products BUT I went ahead and got the grey 64gb model. Strictly gonna be used for SNES and GBA I hate that I’m so excited for it..it seems so good 😭
Great review! Happy to see the trardown. Amy concerns about the translucent plastic cracking etc? I saw thr devoce can get a little hot esp with the cpu/batt setup.
You can add a few more games on the 64gb card, but it's filled quite a bit. The easiest way is just to grab another micro SD and load it up with your favorite games. Just put the card in the second slot, turn on the device, and then it will create the folders for you automatically. You can then take the micro SD and plug it into your computer to copy your games over. 🙏🙏
Do you see any flickering in pokemon emerald? The 4:3 screen should be unable to properly display the game because it is 3:2 and not linear to a 3x integer scale.
No, I just added my own second micro SD card that I actually pulled from my 28XX. It made things nice and easy! The one that was included was a Kioxia branded card and I've never personally had any issues with them (Kioxia is a Toshiba rebrand).
The thing about D pads is that it really does depend on the game. A dpad like the SP wouldn't be good for fighting games, but is perfect for platformers and is likely to pass the contra test. I think it just has to do with the way the d-pad is built and designed. You can't have a super clicky and stiff pad like the original SP while also trying to have something that is ideal for quarter circles and other fighter moves. Let's remember this is a Chinese company working likely out of a warehouse, designing these sub $100 devices. Lol.
I'm really trying to *NOT BUY ONE* right now. I just bought 7-8 retro handhelds recently. I've barely even touched them. Can I not _wait_ for the price to drop?
The benefit of waiting is that I'm sure they will get a discount during some sale in the future. I know the feeling though, once you get one you can't stop! 😅
What's the SD card that comes with it? Is it reliable or should I get a better one? And if anyone knows if it is easy to just copy it over to a new SD card and it will load.
A great retro handheld. But please keep expectations in check. It has a Gameboy Advance SP form factor and control set (few extra buttons). Dont focus on or buy it for any consoles that feature or require an analogue stick. Despite its power, use it appropriately as its nostalgic design suggests.
I never liked Dome switch buttons and this is the reason why I rarely use my New 2DS XL. I love my RG35XX-H because of it's formfactor and the quality of the Dpad (I got lucky) and buttons. The RG35XXSP looks awesome but it just mimics an already existing console while the 'H' has it's own character and can stan on it's own merit .
the SP has always been my favourite handheld and gameboy, sad i bought the rg35v. i dont need another emulator and get into a rabbit hole. but... Black or gray?

I didn’t need to buy this I already have the deck and some other products BUT I went ahead and got the grey 64gb model. Strictly gonna be used for SNES and GBA I hate that I’m so excited for it..it seems so good 😭
trans grey or the silver? i got the trans blue but might get a silver one too.
I personally ordered a silver unit, lots of nostalgia for that color!
Great review! Happy to see the trardown. Amy concerns about the translucent plastic cracking etc? I saw thr devoce can get a little hot esp with the cpu/batt setup.
what about local trading via wireless or something? would be very cool if to be able to trade someone else playing lets say pokemon or something.
It depends on the emulator I think. I know that RetroArch multiplayer doesn’t work that way
How do you add games if you get the 64gb only version?
You can add a few more games on the 64gb card, but it's filled quite a bit. The easiest way is just to grab another micro SD and load it up with your favorite games. Just put the card in the second slot, turn on the device, and then it will create the folders for you automatically.
You can then take the micro SD and plug it into your computer to copy your games over. 🙏🙏
Is it possible to replace bezel without replacing whole screen? I just want black bezels on retro sp. Thanks.
Do you see any flickering in pokemon emerald? The 4:3 screen should be unable to properly display the game because it is 3:2 and not linear to a 3x integer scale.
You can just have black bars around it
Will the display only fit thin stickers and not anything a bit thicker like Pokemon lenticular cards?
Does the screen have good color balance? I have an older anbernic and the colors have kind of a reddish hue
Sleep mode nor quick shutdown doesn’t work with NDS games (Drastic) unfortunately 😢
Mine arrives tomorrow.
where could i find a game list for this product?
Did you replace both your Micro SD cards?
No, I just added my own second micro SD card that I actually pulled from my 28XX. It made things nice and easy!
The one that was included was a Kioxia branded card and I've never personally had any issues with them (Kioxia is a Toshiba rebrand).
@@retrotechdad Fair enough. 😀. Thanks lad
Does it come with Max Payne for GBA? Thanks.
It isn't included with the 64GB card. I actually added that one on my own, awesome game! 🙏
I wish I could get one but the delivery cost being over 10€ for my country kind of hurts. Especially if I get it from AliExpress it costs even more.
Aww, that's a bummer 😭😭 I'm sure it will go on a sale at some point in the future 🙏
Konami Krazy Racers was an incredible good gba game!!
Seriously! 🔥
Lol.
Hey man as the battery is really close to the cpu , will it be a problem?
I'm really trying to *NOT BUY ONE* right now.
I just bought 7-8 retro handhelds recently. I've barely even touched them.
Can I not _wait_ for the price to drop?
The benefit of waiting is that I'm sure they will get a discount during some sale in the future. I know the feeling though, once you get one you can't stop! 😅
Can that "FPS" bar be turned off?
Oh yea, it's not on by default. I just turn it on to demonstrate performance.
@@retrotechdad Ok thanks. I have OCD and it bugged me 😅
How is the rumble with Drill Dozer?
The RG35XXSP looks awesome but it just mimics an already existing console while the 'H' has it's own character and can stan on it's own merit .
the SP has always been my favourite handheld and gameboy, sad i bought the rg35v. i dont need another emulator and get into a rabbit hole. but... Black or gray?
can we install standalone mame and run game & watch games? the retroarch mame and handheld electronic core aren't great
You did a tear down??? RESPECT SIR 🫡 thanks for the super high quality video
Ps. Loved the asmr segment!
You are VERY welcome and I'm glad you enjoyed the ASMR segment. I thought that was fun and a little different than the usual.😅
