I cannot ever imagine paying almost $900 on an nes/famicom clone. That is absolutely insane.
That's the after market pricing. New it was 500 but they don't make it any more.
Especially one that doesn't read cartridges well

RetroUSB sells their AVS NES clone system. It's also FPGA, can take NES & Famicom carts as well as use the Disk System. It's only $185. The one fault it may have is that it runs games at 720p rather than at 1080p.
@@DJ_Macphisto 720 over 1080 on 8bit is not really that big of a deal if you ask me. I use my AVS on my 4K TV and 1440p PC moitor and it looks so good on both.

I really love MJR and his videos as well but I have to admit when it comes to proper knowledge and research there are more accurate channels on TH-cam for this topic.
Modern Vintage Gamer or The Gaming Historian are top tier level of research and very accurate in terms of in depth knowledge.
MJR is however very relatable as his videos are made with passion for the hobby and it shows.

It supports 12 consoles (PC Engine, TurboGrafx-16, Super Grafx, NES, Famicom, SNES, Super Famicom, SEGA Genesis, SEGA Mega Drive, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance) 13 consoles if you have the Sega Power Base Converter for Sega Master System support. One of the staff members from Polymega was on a Polymega Stream that Popixel was doing a few weeks ago, and he was communicating a ton about the Polymega. He was stating part of the hold up, and that they have about 5000 units they’re expecting to receive from the distribution plant to start shipping for customers in May.

I love the Mega SG too; it was the first Analogue console I got (now I have the Super NT and the Mini Noir). You can even hook it up to an original Sega CD and play those games on it too.
I love Analogue products, too! Mega Sg complemented with Terraonion’s MegaSD is wonderful. I also have Nt Mini Noir and have Pocket pre-ordered.
Ngl, watched this hoping there'd be am update on the Polymega. That thing is exactly what I need in my game room, and yet their communication has been beyond abysmal

After seeing number 6...seriously, I'm glad I got a RetroUSB AVS. Only issue with it is the pin connection is ridiculously tight. But man is it fantastic.
I am surprised that the AVS Retro USB is not in this video. It would rank high if it was.

The Retron 5 is my most favorite of the bunch. Not only is it reliable, I had no difficulty getting almost all of my NES/SNES/GB/Genesis carts to read and play. The emulation features of the retron 5 rock, and the ability to use an sd card to store and use translation patches is a Godsend. Although the included controller sucks, you can use any NES/SNES/Genesis controller or a third party knock-off controller to play. Imagine playing Sonic the Hedgehog with a Super NES-style controller. That would've been sacrilegious 30 years ago.
I got the NT mini noir V2 a few weeks ago and I love it! One thing I did notice in their description of this newer model, is that they improved the cart issue. I never had the first model, so I can’t really compare, but I will say I’ve had zero issues thus far :)
I had bought the Retron 5 several years back and I truly loved it! I love the design and it played flawlessly. Yeah, I only used the crappy controller it came with 1 time and that was it lol. It's also awesome that you can play whatever system controller you want that supports it. Oh yeah, and the fact that it's an emulator that can save and load at any point is pretty sweet.
you can also "hack" it to play roms and load ips patches. if it were fpga, it would be the best console on the market. the lag tho...
And I can confirm that it plays Castlevania 3!!!!!

I love the Retron 5. Being able to easily mod it to play roms from an SD card, and to be able to use original controllers is awesome.
Do you remember where you purchased yours? Having trouble finding one just from spending ~10 mins looking online.
@@daniellebackus819 I got mine at a retro video game store 5 or 6 years ago. I did a search online just now and they do seem hard to find, or very marked up. I suggest contacting local game stores to see if they have any still in stock. You could also try sending Hyperkin an email to see if they can help.

I love my Retron 5. I'd say I'm a casual retro gamer and it has been great for playing those games. I also don't have the patience for those older games, so I appreciate the save states.

I love the Retro AVS! This is such a great way to play your Nes games and much cheaper than Analogue. I have a preorder for the Polymega and cannot understand why they just go radio silent. That being said I'm still hopeful it will come out!

I would have liked to see the Retrousb AVS included. It's a more affordable FPGA NES that you can actually still buy and which has a different cartridge loading system.
That one is really good, I had one for awhile and only sold it when I finally got a Analogue
Purchased my AVS 2 years ago. Just a quality affordable and available Fpga Nes- Famicom system. No idea why MJR did not make mention of this stand out console. Perhaps they didn't send him a free unit for review.
@@RetroGamePlayers How does it compare to the Analogue in terms of cartridge connection reliability. In theory, the horizontal loading system should be less prone to wobble, but how does that work out in practice?
@@madcrowmaxwell So I bought the Analogue Noir, which doesn't have that wobble. The AVS cartridge was like a deathgrip on carts, I had a tough time pulling the damn thing out. If I remember the AVS only supports 720p.
@@madcrowmaxwell It's fine. Grips well in both Nes and famicom orientations being horizontal and vertical. The Nes pin connection was tight initially and freed up with usage. Zero problems with reliability after 2 years of usage. I have both Analogue SG and NT consoles however no matter how i tried just couldn't justify the cost of the noir. The Avs looks great in 720p. No need for 1080p. Cheers.
Hopefully Analogue designs the Duo in such a way that the Hue cards are read easily. Not exactly a dime a dozen these days for Turbografx 16 games.

The Nt Mini Noir has reinvigorated my love of NES games and the majority of games I have played to completion lately have been on this thing hooked up via RGB to a CRT. That said, you are 100% correct in calling them out on that cartridge slot - I really do have to fiddle with carts a lot to get them to play and thats with super clean pins.
The new Retron 5 along with it's hq2x filter feature is the best in my opinion.
I 3D printed a part for my Analogue NT Mini Noir and it works fantastic. Sucks that the first Mini wasn't up to snuff.

Love the Atariman, it look super cool. I'm sure there is a market for it even if it costs $100s considering retro game enthusiasts pay $800 for a high end NES/Famicom FPGA clone.
The reason it cost that much money was because it was one of the earliest FPGA devices mass produced, and so it was incredibly expensive to make. The atari man was from the same era, and would likely have cost even more given the lower demand for atari. Now, with more mass production for FPGAs, things are much cheaper. Which is reflected in analogues pricing since.
I love my Retron5, translates import games to English with downloaded patches...YES PLEASE!
...but the lag! Damn. Mike Tyson’s Punch Out is unplayable. Super Mario Bros.? I can release the jump button entirely before Mario even jumps!

@@BobbyxZx I’m glad I’m not the only one! I hear there’s a possibility it may be our TVs to blame though. If we have cheap quality TVs, particularly newer models without game modes, the lag is caused by that. My TV qualifies.
Pretty solid list. I can't really argue with your top choice as it seems to be without flaws. As a fan of your channel I do have a slight request. Could you try to put labels on your gameplay in the future? Not everyone can recognize fan favorites like Aleste at 15:09 or hidden gems like Lilo and Stitch at 11:06. A while ago I actually sent you a message through your website about my favourite clone console, which you do not have. It is subject to the same sort of controversy as the Retron 5, but it is so so so much better. It is the Retro Freak. This thing is AMAZING. So... it plays all the systems that the Retron 5 does + ALL the systems Mega SG plays (some with adapters) + PC-Engine/TurboGrafx-16 cards. AND THAT'S NOT THE BEST PART! Unlike the bulky Retron 5, the Retro Freak detaches from the cartridge reader so you can have a console the size of a Playstation Vita TV hooked up to your television and ready to play thousands of games. Unlike the Retron 5 the ROMs ripped from your cartridges are stored on the console. You also get 100 save states per game, the ability to patch ROMs (including translations), and you can download your cartridge saves. The thing is amazing and absolutely worth importing from Japan. I have opinions on the PolyMega. I am the right target audience for their product. I would like to save space and have a CD based gaming console all-in-one like the Retro Freak is for 8 to 16 bit consoles. I have been waiting for this machine to come out for years, but I refuse to pre-order. I cannot afford to give these people all this money (now $400) for them to sit on for years. Here is what I believe is happening: They are manufacturing these things to spec, meaning as they get money in they will make them. Rather than create 100,000 of these machines and sell them, they are waiting until they have enough money in hand to make 1000 of them and manufacture just that amount. That business model guarantees that this console will never come to market. This is why they cancelled their relationship with WalMart. As most retailers do, WalMart does not capture the funds until they have the items to ship to the customers. Since PolyMega is using funds already received to manufacture, their relationship with Walmart could not work. Making these things to spec when money is received is not inherently bad, but these people are lying to their customers. People like Retro RGB make the Gameboy Advance Consolizer to spec, but let customers know that is what is going on. PlayMaji want everyone to think that the thing they are offering exists and can just be bought like a Retron 5. It does not and I highly doubt it ever will. The fact that they sent out units exclusively to youtube influencers like yourself only adds more credence to the fact that it appears as if they only want to fool the public into thinking the thing exists.
My hope is that someone with credibility and manufacturing capabilities sees how much interest there is in something like the PolyMega and creates an actual CD/DVD based emulation machine that can play Sega Saturn & Dreamcast, PlayStation 1 & 2 and all the other CD based consoles that the PolyMega does. I know for a fact that Retro Pie is already supporting using physical CDs (retropie.org.uk/2020/04/retropie-4-6-released-with-raspberry-pi-4-support/) and it won't be long before DVD support is possible. The technology is close for an all in 1 console to play all CD based consoles + PS2, GameCube, & Wii (through Dolphin). The minute someone actually creates that console, it instantly becomes my new favourite clone console. Until then it is without a doubt, the Retro Freak!

There needs to be an Atari 5200 clone console! I gotta mention it every time these are brought up, but I guess the lacking interest is keeping them from being made. That 5200 hardware has so many problems, modern support would be greatly appreciated.
FrameRater I can completely agree with your sentiments here! An Atari 5200 clone console whether a pure hardware clone, emulation, or an emulation hardware Atari 5200 clone console would definitely be a great asset.
I have the NT mini noir and on three different occasions I lost a save file from bumping the console. So now if the game has battery back up I usually use my AVS. I do love my NT noir but the floppy slot sucks.
One clone system I didn't see here (and my personal favorite) : the Retro Freak by Cyber Gadget. It plays everything the Retron 5 does, plus PCE/SGX/TG16.
For like $300 more. More do custom firmware on your retron 5 and do them for less.

@Nik Im going to put custom firmware and boot from card most of the time so thatd suck but wouldnt ruin the consoles use for me. And adds psx, pce, & wonderswan. With no adapter to use original controllers too, unlike retrofreaks usb ports.

I love the idea of the clone system but I'm good with legit hardware, then connect via RetroTink. I do love my Mega SG, though.
Same here. Not a fan of these clone consoles that dump the rom save games and aren't able to save to the cartridge itself. Need to be able to pick up where I left off on portable hardware for Gameboy/SNES games
Mike sent me the upcoming RetroTink5xPro, but I haven't had time to mess with it yet. But based on his previous products, it will probably be a winner too.
I use a framemiester on my newer tv but same difference I guess? Otherwise I’m rocking a SCART connection to a CRT for everything PS2 and backwards 👍
I find the most compelling argument for clone consoles is reliability. My original SNES just can't handle the power-draw of the SD2SNES and starting blacking out after about a month of use. It's similarly nice not having to worry about batteries dying or capacitors failing.

Great breakdown of the clone systems. I love that all these options are available. Once I tried Mister I was done looking for my solution, but I know that setup isn't for everyone.
I have an updated MiSTer I haven't had time to mess with yet, but I plan to. It looks amazing! For this video I decided to just go with 3rd party products designed for specific machines.

In the time I have waited for it, I have added a new backlit screen to an old GBA and I plan to do that for my Neo Geo Pocket as well. I don't know if I actually need the new Analogue, but I really want to see an honest review of it from you.

Thank you for doing this! I've retired my original systems for my son to use because they're just worn out and I've been looking at a clone to use I might have to get a Retron 5 because most of what he plays are my old Nintendo and SNES games.
Hyperkin also has a 3 in 1 adapter for playing Game Gear, SMS, etc.
Works with the retron 5 and retrofreak systems. I'm happy to finally play these games again.

Im glad to see it working, i just hope the company can build and ship with their supply chain problems.
A few months ago they even updated the system firmware, so I know they are still working on it. But as to the overall status, your guess is as good as mine. Really wish they would have responded to my request this week for an update.

I was close to preordering the polimega, but this was just as they pulled from walmart and glad I held out. If they get it out I will consider getting it again.
I have the Cyber Gadget Retro Freak - it's essentially a more robust version of the Retron5. Not only does it support all the same systems as the Retron5, it also adds PC Engine and TurboGrafx16 support as well as gives you the option of copying the ROMs to SD card so you don't even need to use the cartridges anymore.
I keep saying I'm going to pull the plug and pick up a Retron 5, but I haven't yet. Now I'm thinking about it again thanks to this video.
Personally the only problem I've had with mine was with trying to use the pack in controller. It always crashed the system for me. Other then that I love it, especially for importing games.
i had to lube mine with wd40 to get it to let go of the carts (really). search for it on youtube if you dont believe me

Also worth mentioning if you are on a really tight budget you can use a stream box with steamlink app. Then connecting a controller to it and streaming emulated games from your gaming PC to the living room, rather well!

I went through 3 Retron77's and all of them couldn't play certain games for some reason. The games were different on each one too. I was so mad cause it looked good on my tv. Has anyone else had problems with game carts not working?

Will the Harmony cartridge and 7800 games work with the Retron 77 ?
Negative on both. The community retron77 build lets one load 2600 roms onto an sd card, which works great. Cheers,
Love your videos. For me I've got an original Genesis hooked up and my PS3/PS Vita/Vita TV. My only clone console is the Retron 2. I dont have the HD version because for a while I had an old CRTV. Now I'll probably upgrade to an HD version soon. (I do have an OG SNES and NES, just using the clone console to save on wear and tear.)

Had no idea the Analogue NT Mini had that issue.
You can run the everdrive or whatever roms you want to off off an SD with the "jailbreak". Other cores are there for other consoles too. So if you don't mind not using cartridges than it's not an issue.
Dude, there is no issue. Would you stuff your hand in the nes port and start pumping the cart up and down and say... "holyshit this thing sucks it fucked my game!" no you wouldn't. There is no issue with the "slack" unless you live near a volcano and earthquakes daily.

@@TheRetroChallengerV Clearly you didn't have the experience where the slightest vibration in the floor like someone walking into the room would cause your cartridge based console to freeze. NES would do it and I have a Genesis that does it. They don't have save states so it can be a big deal.
@@ToothpickMan11 clearly something must have been wrong with either consoles or carts as we were 6 kids in the house and it would VERY rarely happen.
Now I also own NT mini noir super Nt and a mega SG and still have 0 issues with 3 kids of my own in the house.
