    Hygiene is so important. There’s a MUA TH-camr that I found recently that does great work but in one of her videos she mentioned that she only washes her brushes once a month and relies on brush sprays the rest of the time. I commented politely about the cleaning and she snapped at me and her followers piled on top. Ended up deleting my comment bc I wasn’t about to deal with that behaviour.

      Wow, that is so unhygienic, how could that be acceptable? I’m not a makeup artist so I’m not sure how prevalent her practice is in the field… Also, it’s disappointing that her followers came after you like that :(

      Sara- WOW that isn't good at all :( I have to say that I do this with my own personal brushes but NEVER in a million years should this be acceptable for your clients. Never had formal training myself. Tried to work with MAC but at the time it was suuuper competitive 2015? I wasn’t selected after the model makeup interview but I took what I could from that interview. I told them I loved the opportunity to be here and so happy for it. Asked what they suggest I can improve on they said try to incorporate more textures, ie matte + shimmer + gloss etc. Another guy that was sitting right next to me said he loved my eyeshadow & i was like really? Thanks! His model came out so good and he wasn’t selected either but fast forward a couple years later and he became this big time/ well known makeup artist through Instagram so I love that! Just because we didn’t get it at mac doesn’t mean it’s over or we suck- on the contrary! We kept pushing and will continue to learn & improve & keep that dream alive!

      OH YES 2015 was SOOOO freaking competitive to work at MAC! That's when YT started blowing up and also MAC was one of the few MUA pro brands at that point in time. I'm so sorry that you didn't get the spot, but everything happens for a reason! YESSS!!! I absolutely love this!!! One thing I love to say during trials is instead of telling brides do you want me to “fix” or “change”; I always say “adjust” or “tweak”. I think it gives more of a complimentary tone of wording rather than harsh like we did something wrong since we are adjusting to the clients preference! Loved this style of video!!

      @@sayrahernandez1no right or wrong way. I’ve undergone many trainings, it just depends on what you and your client are comfortable with. I always check with them in the beginning, and every single one of them opts out for seeing the end result only and then making adjustments. It’s too early for client (especially non-makeup wearers) to truly be able to assess the look if you do the eyes or eyebrows first, as it will always look crazy, until you do the face.

    Hi everyone! Hi Julie! I agree with all you have listed. I have noticed that some MUA's have a pride issue that deters them from being professional. Their level of arrogance is off putting, too. I recommend to any MUA to take a business class that includes business etiquette. This helps with the professional aspect of the job. Oh, Julie you are soo right about hygiene; SANITATION in this industry is IMPERATIVE! This will make or break your reputation. Thanks Julie for touching on these important subjects. :)

      Definitely agree! I never took business classes but I went through college where I had to present myself professionally with certain classes and then worked In customer service for 8 years. Thank you for this! I officially began my makeup artistry journey this month and one of the things I focused on the most is sanitation. I’ve gotten my makeup done only a handful of times and outside of going to the Sephora or MAC counter- every artist I went to had dirty brushes or a hectic work area. I’ve done so much research to ensure that I’m marking all the boxes in that category. And watching your videos helped a ton as well 💗
    EDIT: I make sure to ask about skin types as well! I have never been asked that before and because of this my makeup application fell through sometimes. I remember stopping an artist before she applied primer and telling her what my skin type was and she literally said it didn’t matter because she uses the same thing for everyone 😭

    As a makeup artist I totally agree with everything in this video. When I'm doing a large event. Its quite often that I end up fixing other makeup artist mistakes or things clients wanted but other makeup artist refused to fix or do. Of course I wait until after the other artists leaves which most often happens and I'm left alone at the end, fixing. It sucks but I also love helping others feel better. It's horrible to want something done and it turns out really bad, especially with the face. You should add another category. People who say they are makeup artists but don't have an actual makeup artist kit, of some kind. Such as the ones who come in with a personal makeup bag, with broken makeup and well used products. 🤢🤮 15:27

    • @julieruby
      @julieruby  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I’ve had to do this as well! It’s so frustrating how some artists aren’t as passionate as we are and take the time to make sure everything looks good. Most of the time those people just do makeup to make extra money when they really aren’t qualified to do it. It’s sad!

  • @joycarey
    @joycarey 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Nice video, lovely! I agree with what you mentioned. I have been in the industry for 28 years now and I have seen a lot, lol. I would say and add a few other things, that are important to one's business as a professional makeup artist......
    1. Appropriate dress when working on clients:
    No shirts exposing full frontal of your breasts/cleavage, wear clean clothing- no stains, tears, or holes, wear comfortable clothing & shoes- no sweats or pajama pants, lol, something that you can freely move in and won't slow you down, good shoes that support your feet for you'll be on feet for awhile, and dress accordingly to the event you are working at.
    #Nails- this is a pet peeve of mine when I have trained other makeup artists, lol...
    Short nails are best, medium length is fine, but long very long knife-life nails are a safety work hazard. Plus, it prevents you in opening products, you could hurt your client when doing their eyes, and it slows down your working process.
    #A well-stocked kit:
    For every client according to their skincare needs, tone of skin, and application/method of products. If the makeup artist apologizes more than once in not having certain products or tools to do the job, then they are not a prepared, professional working makeup artist and should not be taking clients.
    #Wear makeup
    I can not tell you how many artists I have seen, that go bare faced or barely wear a full face of makeup when at jobs & working on clients. Remember, you are a walking advertisement for your business. Clients will see how you do your face/makeup and have more confidence in your work, thinking if you look good then they will too!
    Of course, not all makeup artists are created equally, lol...but most that care about makeup application will care about how they present themselves to their clients in wearing makeup themselves.
    # 1 Pet Peeve of mine!!!
    Never say or be in the frame of mind of......FAKE IT TILL YOU MAKE IT!!!
    Reason being is that you will be placing yourself in danger of failing! Being under prepared or over prepared for the wrong thing. Pretending to know something you don't will become exposed when you are expected to deliver and will cost you business and future referrals. Its best to honest while being willing to try if they let you.
    Hope other upcoming makeup artists finds this helpful in your makeup journey! I learned through the years through trial & error, but had a great professional makeup artist mentor that showed me the way. Always be willing to learn at any given time and later customize it in how it can benefit you and your business.
    Thank you, for making & sharing this video, Julie! Have a blessed day!
    Much success to you!
    Cheers♡,
    Joy Carey

      I love all of these points that you made! Dressing professionally is always something that I think is overlooked nowadays. I'm not super old fashioned or anything, but I always think that you should look like a professional and not just a friend that is doing someone's makeup! So many hairstylists and artists nowadays just show up in yoga pants and it kills me lol
      I do however have the tendency to not put a lot of makeup on my face when I go to jobs because of 2 reasons 1) I wake up at 4am and my brain physically does not work 2) I end up sweating it off throughout the day because of me working haha!
      As far as the fake it till you make it mentality, even though you said it's a pet peeve, there are certain situations where this has been helpful for me over time and landed me jobs that I wouldn't have normally taken. But I definitely understand how that can set you up for failure in most cases! Thanks you for sharing all of this!

    Hey Julie!
    First off you are my fav makeup blogger because you are so real and you do an amazing job. You also share a ton of useful tips and tricks so I make sure not to miss a video !
    I have been doing makeup professionally for about a year (I did before also but that was before I went to makeup school). Where I learned makeup they didn’t teach us how to work with different skin types so I pretty much just researched a lot. I have been struggling with applying makeup on very dry skin. For example, I had a client who I knew beforehand had dry skin. So I cleaned her face with Micellar water, then applied hydrating serum then a sheet moisturizing mask, also did some massage for her. After that settled I went in with Smashbox primer for dry skin and started working on the eyes. For foundation I used Estée Lauder Futurist because it’s supposed to be good for dry skin. I used a sponge and only tapped, I also did not use a lot. Afterwards I put just tiny amounts of setting powder right where needed and of course setting spray in the end. Still the foundation did not look perfect. Especially on the chin it started to separate … you couldn’t tell unless you got up really close to her but still … I tried fixing it with a little more setting spray and it worked but it still was not perfect overall. I actually got extremely upset at myself that maybe I’m just not talented enough to be a makeup artist and still I feel a bit off. Because everyone else seems to publish perfect pictures which I’m not sure whether they do it with a filter or not… sooooo LOL how do you manage when you get clients with such dry skin? What am I doing wrong ? And also - did you ever feel in the beginning like you were not good enough and just … depressed over the whole situation ?
    Thank you so much for taking your time to read it i literally have no one else to ask !!!!!
    May Gd bless you with much success and health !

    • @julieruby
      @julieruby  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there! First, thank you for all of your kind words. I'm so happy that you've really gotten some useful info from my videos :)
      You are definitely not alone when it comes to dealing with more dry skin types. It's definitely a challenge even for experience artists! I have not personally used the majority of the products you listed together so I'm going generalize. The main thing I would watch out for is formulations for primer and foundation. Make sure your bases match up as in silicone & silicone, water & water, etc. If they don't, they can tend to separate.
      It sounds like you have a great technique as far as application. The only thing I would do differently is make sure you exfoliate the dryness first. You can do this by using an exfoliating pad like the First Aid Beauty Facial Radiance Pads for example, or you can even take a moisturizer on a q-tip and softly buff it into the dry areas. You need to focus on getting rid of the texture first otherwise your skincare won't be as affective and sink in like it needs to. Also, you really don't need a ton of things for dry skin so over prepping may be an issue as well. I don't personally use any serum, I just exfoliate, go in with an essence, and then moisturize.
      Yes, I still to this day feel like I'm not good enough. The feeling honestly never really goes away and there's some days that are worse than others. However, I will tell you that as you gain experience, like with any other job, you gain confidence and when this happens your self-doubt will get less and less so! Keep up the great work :)

    Had a make up trial for my wedding done last month and LOVED it. Everything was on point. Just got a second trial this week to use different colors and it was a sh*t show. The MUA started my appointment 20 minutes late, phone calls kept coming in making the MUA stop my make up, my head kept getting cranked over to the right to where my neck was hurting, the MUA totally missed my left lower jaw area due to not working around me… then she put so much bronzer and blush on me, made my eyebrows too dark and didn’t use any skin primer when I specifically said “I have oily skin”… at the end of it I paid 75 bucks to look like a clown prostitute. I had to wash 3/4 of it off because I had a birthday dinner planned but could NOT face the public like that. I got home from the appointment wanting to cry and even my fiancé asked me why I looked bruised… I’m going to have to fire her tomorrow… hopefully I get some of my 200 dollar deposit back.

    Great information. I’m currently an aspiring (beginner) MUA and am trying to get models right now to start a portfolio.
    I haven’t taken a makeup course YET and I’ve seen the online makeup academy- but every person I’ve seen talk about it has a code or something which makes me wonder if it’s unbiased. It’s hard to tell with online courses but it’s much more affordable than the 5k makeup course in my area. 😅
    Also- you worked at Mac which is cool! What about like Sephora or Ulta? Would that kind of be professional experience also?

    • @julieruby
      @julieruby  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s great that you are just starting your makeup artist journey!! You definitely are on the right track with getting models :)
      I understand that you think there may be a bias on the OMA, however, we DO NOT make any sort of commission off the discount code. The course was paid for by them in complete honesty but I told them I would give my honest review about it. I was not told by them to make it positive if I didn’t like it. I personally loved the instructor feedback and the fact that you had to do makeup on others to pass the course. It would be a fantastic resource for beginners!
      MAC by far though gave me the most experience and it’s why I’m the artist I am today. ULTA and Sephora are both retailers as well, BUT I worked at ULTA and it’s mainly just a glorified cashier/salesperson role. You’re never trained on doing makeup on others. Sephora does somewhat but not as in depth as MAC did!

    • @julieruby
      @julieruby  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it definitely is! This is a controversial issue and people have varying opinions about this. With my brides, I obviously do previews with them and I do stop at each step to make sure the look is going in the right direction for them. If it's a normal app or maybe a bridesmaid, I'll usually ask them in the beginning for reference photos or to describe what makeup they want. I won't show them the mirror until the end in that case. This is only because I've done this in the past and everyone will nit pick which makes the app drag out for way to long. I'm usually on a time crunch for weddings and my main focus is the bride. If they look in the mirror and want to make adjustments, I'll definitely be happy to :)

      Hey that's super exciting! At least you are taking the time to educate yourself! Although if you plan on making it a career I would definitely go through some sort of professional training :) Never hurts to learn more!

    I only say that I like how something looks if I’m truly happy with it. I get a goofy grin and am like, “Ooohh yeah. You’re looking good.” If I know I’ve messed up, I go silent until I fix it. 😅
