    So the Three Oaths were already a thing long before Artur Hawkwing was born. From The Wheel of Time Companion:
    “The first and third oaths came about as a result of ordinary people’s suspicion toward the Aes Sedai, and were in place before the beginning of the Trolloc Wars, possible as much as five hundred years earlier. The second path grew from tales passed down among Aes Sedai regarding the War of the Shadow, and was the first created after that war.” “All three oaths were in place by the Trolloc Wars, certainly by the end.”
    The Trolloc Wars took place 1000 years prior to Artur Hawkwing and the War of the Hundred Years.

      The Companion? It doesn't even have an article on the Seals. It says many things that are inconsistent with what's said in the series and in other lore sources. Why should I trust what it says? I'll go with what is said in-series.

      Yeah. Just like most organizations, once it reaches a certain size, it gets filled with people whom have all sorts of opinions. Even more so a political body. @@joelleblanc8670 lol, that's nothing... "Hey man, there's this series you really need to check out. It has 41 books in it, and there are at least 6 different books you can start with because although a bunch the characters cross over between the different story arcs, each arc focuses mainly on a different group of characters. The books weren't written in chronological order so if you're trying to use that as a reading order then you're kind of out of luck. A bunch of the books are also standalone and aren't really related to the other ones at all, but sometimes characters from the other books will show up in the standalone books anyway. Even within the individual story arcs you can kind of read them out of order and it wouldn't matter. You should probably google a chart to figure it all out before you even start. Oh yea, almost forgot, the author more or less retconned the first two books he wrote out of the series, but there are some things from those two that are still consistent with the rest of the series, so you can read those two and some of what's in them will be referenced in other books, but some of it will seem like it was completely changed. "after the breaking an empire arose" you mean like 2000 years later right? Like closer to the the EoTW than the breaking by 1000 years. The three oaths came about around the Trolloc wars 1000 years before that. And it's largely implied Ishamael is behind that to hamstring the white tower.

    • @ajiththomas2465
      @ajiththomas2465 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Eh, even without Ishamael pressing his finger down on the scales, I think the Three Oaths would've come about regardless because the normal humans who are unable to channel would have a natural and justified distrust of the Aes Sedai. A large part of the AS' negative reputation is pretty earned. The Aes Sedai are a bunch of ivory towered, stuck up, Jupiter sized ego, manipulative magical cunts who manipulate everyone around them, all while acting in such a haught, holier-than-thou manner that they make the royalty in certain kingdoms look humble. It's a pretty understandable fact that the Aes Sedai haughty, elitist, out of touch, and love to hoard their knowledge. Besides, there's no code of ethics when it comes to to an Aes Sedai using Compulsion on normal humans. One of the first things that Moraine did was try to use Compulsion on the Two River Trio. Even without Ishamael's involvement, the Three Oaths would've come about sooner rather than later. All that accumulated power, with no accountability, is just a recipe for disaster and distrust.

    I'm so glad you plan on doing wolf brothers next. I'm almost done with book 6 and the wolf thing is probably the most confusing aspect to the books so far. I can't tell if they are inherently connected to the dream or weaves or what. It seems like they are just a totally separate magic system that isn't at all clear why it's resurfaced.

    The Aes Sedai are pretty much the embodiment of the old saying that power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. The male Aes Sedai from the Age of Legends fell to a very literal, supernatural corruption, but the women of the White Tower, over the course of millennia, fell by inches to forms of corruption more familiar to us in the real world - pride, ambition, division, unaccountable power, and conceit.
    As the Dragon Reborn, Rand feels the pull of both those forms of corruption, subject to both the Taint and to the corrosive effects of the legend of the Dragon Reborn that now surrounds him. He goes from teenage farmer to figure of prophecy and legend very quickly indeed, and having kings and queens kneel before him, and whole nations delivered into his hands, means that the potential to be consumed by arrogance and conceit, along with paranoia and suspicion, besieges him at all times, and he doesn't always succeed in resisting it.

    I'd add some commentary on the relative strength of Aes Sedai. That is a big part of the internal politics and there is a larger question about overall strength. Current Aes Sedai seem to be, on the whole, less powerful than Aes Sedai from the Age of Legends. (Always loved the theory about since they were killing all the male channelers, they were slowly winnowing out the gene pool.

One question: Is this all happening in One turn of the Wheel? Like does the Wheel start when the world breaks or when technology advanced before the breaking? That is the only thing I'm confused about. Thanks again for the explanation!.

    What always frustrates me when I read the books is how Aes Sedai believe themselves to be superior and the ones who should guide the world, yet the only difference between them and anyone else is the fact that they can channel. They aren't better or worse, they're just...people. And no wonder people distrust them when they seclude themselves on their island and see The Tower as the center of everything. It makes them intersting, but also incredibly frustrating.

    • @Junya01
      @Junya01 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In their mind, they're the most educated and equipped force for the Light to guide mankind - because of the prior history of Aes Sedai in the Age of Legends, how the remaining sane Aes Sedai helped recover the world from The Breaking, their integral part in the Trolloc Wars, alongside a crazy strict education in all things channeling and politics where they put their life on the line multiple times just to graduate.
      Their culture is also one of power, the one with the most power has authority, both in their own ranks and how they treat others. Channelers > regular people, despite Aes Sedai serving the world. This obviously makes them elitists, a culture ingrained in them from years studying in the White Tower, because they really are, probably, the most educated and equipped organisation to run the world.
      And for most of Randland, they kinda do - the three oaths handicap them for the sake of non-channelers and their fear of being controlled, but it just forced Aes Sedai to be master manipulators to get what they want. And in an Aes Sedai's mind, they deserve to be on top. They deserve to get what they want. Because an Aes Sedai (supposedly) knows best, above all others

    • @Junya01
      @Junya01 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Anne Day that's why I said in their minds lol, I was just explaining why they're so full of themselves. Also, the ones most equipped to handle the last battle and uniting the nations is a united white tower. What are regular humans gonna do against Forsaken and dreadlords? Aes Sedai hubris might have caused the War of the Shadow and The Breaking, but they were also responsible for saving millions of lives in the Age of Legends and the third Age, not to mention have the most knowledge by far of the Forsaken and the prophecies of the Dragon. They caused this mess and they're the most equipped to fix it, so they act like everyone should know the latter while not mentioning the former.
      Also, we see from Grey perspectives, and Cadsuane, that they've stopped countless wars and massacres from happening because of their Aes Sedai meddling - without their schemely interference, nations, people and culture would be lost today that would be needed in Tarmon Gaidon. Love it or hate it, their schemes broke the world but also help save it

    • @Junya01
      @Junya01 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Anne Day you... said that "all of this only makes sense if you accept the Aes Sedai tendency to cherry pick history" as a response to why I said they think themselves superior to everyone. You labelled them firefighters who are also arsonists that caused the fires they're putting out in the first place, meaning that their superiority over others is unjustified.
      Then I responded that even in their mistakes (unleashing the Dark One, the Breaking) in their POV they're still superior to everyone because they are the most equipped to prepare the world for Tarmon Gaidon, they feel they have the right to meddle because their knowledge would lead to a better outcome than if one made a decision without said knowledge, and the mistakes of their forebears doesn't hold themselves accountable personally.
      And even outside their POV, the Aes Sedai we know today didn't even cause The Breaking - it was Lews Therin's decision to seal the bore with his 100 MALE companions, tainting Saidin and leaving men insane to break the world. It was the female half of Aes Sedai that saved it from them, the half that is currently what an Aes Sedai is. And (spoilers for AMoL)
      Even if both men and women Aes Sedai agreed to seal the bore, that would have tainted BOTH halves of the One Power because you need the True Power as a buffer. Saidar not being tainted is a direct result of the female Aes Sedai being reasonable. They saved the world, they did not cause The Breaking, that point is moot.
      (No longer spoilers for AMoL) And about the Trollocs and Shadowspawn? It was solely Aginor, who renounced being an Aes Sedai and was Forsaken. Not even a woman Channeler, no longer an Aes Sedai. You can't hold them accountable for making Trollocs if it was a single male Forsaken who did the work. Or what, is every atrocity the Forsaken did (torturing whole cities, enslaving others through Compulsion, manipulating the nations of the world to be divided) also the Aes Sedai's fault? It's ridiculous to hold them accountable for that, that is not their mistake.
      And you talk of their meddling being a bad thing, making them hypocrites - without Aes Sedai meddling we never would have found the Dragon Reborn. It's just a straight up fact that their schemes for the world do more good than harm to the world, superiority complex or no. That doesn't make them hypocrites or unqualified to feel "superior", it makes them human.

    Great video as always, well summed up. I admit to dreading some of the inevitable changes Amazon is going to have to do to condense such a massive work to a season, even for the first book. Where did you see that this is set in the future? I've read the series several times, and can't recall that. I do know (SPOILERS) that Rand and the other chiefs saw that the Aiel came from a time when life was much more advanced, but don't remember that as a time beyond our own age... Just curious. Must have missed that somewhere. Oh, and I was completely distracted during your entire presentation. Some will know why. LOL...

      Our age in the books is called the age of wonders. It never says outright, but there are plenty of hints. It is followed by the age of legends, which is followed by the third age in which we find ourselves in the books.

    I was thinking that an aspect of the Aes Sedai worth mentioning is their long life span. I think it impacts their view on the world in different ways:
    1. they've been through a lot more
    2.they've seen a lot more horror in the world.
    3. they've lost family members, children, grandchildren, love is not forever.
    I feel like their long life span helps them to see what is more important and long-lasting in this world. At the same time I believe it also darkens their view of the world because they've lost so many family members and love is not something that they could ever hold onto for very long. The only thing that they have in their lives that lasts very long is the White Tower that's the only static thing. So the white tower is mother, the white tower is father.
