That's my thinking as well. Too much to explore immediately, but break it down every season and new viewers can digest the information easier. Also by pairing it up with when it's relevant and those viewers will actually be looking for it then anyways.

@@Merecir why? theyre going to caemlyn next season. there will OBVIOUSLY be changes to things like locations when adapting a book series to a show, it's inevitable. what is really important is ensuring that everyone involved in the production of the show is committed and understands the essence of the books. i think its clear thats the case especially when things like this are announced or even something like rosamund pike being a producer. everyone involved is very committed to this world and the success of the show

But I guess, if they can replace Caemlyn with Tar Valon they can flip Caemlyn and Cairhien as well... but that is ok, as long as they "understand the essence of the books".

@@rahefissa6883 so, Perrin goes from the calm guy that would never act in precipitation, until the wolves, which is why he struggles with them, to a guy who already killed someone in precipitation. I guess that the place filled with memories of the woman he loved and killed is the perfect place to bring back his new GF he made 1 year after that killing, so no issues with that change for the arc of the two rivers. Mat goes from the cheerful prankster with nothing attaching him to the two rivers to a damaged thief who has to abandon his sisters to a life of misery. I'm sure that won't impact his choice not to come back to the two rivers, or to go on adventuring to enjoy the world. Tam now is unable to kill a single trolloc, when using his sword and being in good shape, and never talks in his fever, while nynaeve is a cold blooded killer who tries to stab Lan and is able to single-handedly kill a trolloc when she was unharmed first and dizzy from getting captured and dragged violently. Moiraine is now some kind of sociopath that let's the ferry guy go to his death without blinking. Thom is now totally someone who would steal from a poor kid. Lan doesn't have any issue with someone questioning his aes sedais after she saved one of their kin and the town, in a way that he knows might incite the people against her. Aes sedais are now some kind of superhuman who resists wounds much better than everyone else, given that getting shafted doesn't break her connection to the power, and she can handle a Thakandar wound for days when it takes Tam down in a few hours. Yet a conscious aes sedais is no threat to whitecloaks trying to burn her at the stake. And a whitecloak can now advise someone to get Healed by an Aes sedai in front of his men and questioners without getting insta killed. I'm so glad that at least, they've maintained the spirit of the books...
They are ABSOLUTELY on the right track with this! I would absolutely love to see them play up Thom Merrilin telling all the stories he tells and is hinted at in the books as gleeman/bard for us! What would you do to have a night in an inn listening to him tell stories? Heck yeah make him our gleeman! Love it! All these little shorts could be just amazing content they could never hit in the main story. Keep us invested! Keep us begging for more... specially in between seasons.
except for the shot at the Bore that could have been LTT or a Forsaken getting trapped, and the shot of LTT à coming home, it looks like most of the other images were taken from the Manetheren video. Battles, Aemon, top shot of Eldrene coming out of the palace, destruction, the red eagle banners, the eagle flying over the mountains, etc. I wager they keep Hawkwing and the War of Hundred Years lore videos for season two when the Seanchan show up. There could be ones then about Portal Stones and Mirror Worlds, Mierin and the drilling, TAR, the Ogier etc. For s1 they need the basics: sealing and breaking, OP, Manetheren and, it looks like, Lan’s story, and a clip on the Tower. Narration by Verin in s2 lore videos, I’m calling it.
These shorts could also be a way to explain some of the changes they made with the adaptation, so that book fans are on the same level as new fans of the show.
Lol there's a paradox though, "Even myth is long forgotten when the age that gave it birth comes again" but we have a book series with myths of our age.

The Breaking wasn't a singular event. It was a period of time that spanned over a thousand years. After the literal apocalypse, I'm sure we'd be LUCKY to have medieval standards, especially with additional occasional nuclear blasts going off constantly during that time, lol.
If I remember right, pre-Trolloc Wars, the world had kind of grabbed onto an ok amount of tech and culture. But that wiped the board the rest of the way.
These remind me of some of the videos put out be the World of Warcraft teams, which have been pretty damn amazing in their own way. I'm pumped for these!

About this could never happen on television, I would like to disagree because we had the Clone Wars short mini-series prior to the revenge of the sith that was pretty epic.
I almost posted the same thing, that was the first thing I thought of. The DVD equivalent would be like The Animatrix, or the animated shorts they did with Batman Begins and the first GI Joe movie. Filling the world in with a separate series of animated concontent. I always love when they do that.
Oh man, the tonal shift might very well be why they're doing it as shorts so they don't have to have "flashbacks" to sci-fi, which would be confusing for a lot of people, but putting it as bonus features allows people who want to get into deep lore to be able to without giving "whiplash" to the more general audience of the show.
The art is absolutely beautiful. But I agree they're getting the AoL legends completely wrong unless "the collapse" between the opening of the bore and the war of power was so degenerative. But that hardly explains a reversion to Medieval styles and architecture.

The Blu Rays for Game of Thrones did something similar. They weren’t animated this well, but they were cool shorts that provided background and history.
I am still super hesitant about this show. The tone of this looks better than the show. But also knowing Rafe "agreed to disagree" with Harriet and Brandon on certain changes makes me super nervous. I have literally read this series in full like six or seven time, some individual books as many times as there are books. It's far more important to me than any other adaptations or book series. I want to love... But I am very trepidatious.
I am not nearly as invested as you are in the series, but I too am apprehensive. The tone of the trailers seems off to me, and it could simply be a product of poor marketing, but certain stylistic choices make me anxious.
I wish they did the WoT adaptation animated...Honestly I feel like 75% of fantasy adaptations should be animated. Well objectively I would enjoy it more.
If these shorts prove to be popular (very likely), then we could see more of these in season 2. And that’s when we’d get history of the seanchan and Artur Hawkwing and others. Remember, the wheel weaves as the wheel wills.
To possibly answer your question mid watch: The breaking might be shown as medieval if this is "A story as if told to you by Thom" because modern 3rd Age folk don't know the full glorious appearance of the Age of Legends
I was actually expecting something like this. That top-down view of the Hall of the Tower from the trailer stood out like a sore thumb, as in there's no way that's a shot from the actual show. It looks very similar to the top-down view we had of Aes Sedai walking in this teaser.

It was clearly detailed that by the time the DO was sealed up at the end of the War of Power that most of the technology was destroyed or lost already. The breaking that occurred over the years that followed had more to with the continents being destroyed or shifted.
Hopefully this gives a hint on what they are gonna giva us wit LOTR: a series and then more extra, that explains (and narrates) a lot of lore that can´t be so detailly told in action.
This reminds me of the Game of Thrones history and lore videos that were included in the DVD. Amazon seems to be doing something similar but included in the X-Ray feature.
Daniel, just cause the age before the Breaking had 'futuristic technology' doesn't mean it was a Sci-fi sterile place like Star Trek. I viewed it more like a Steam Punk thing, mixing magic with Tech similar to how Arcane is showing it. The inclusion of Magic would change how tech develops and even slow it down to a certain degree. Most technology advancements in history happened because there was a need to do something better/faster/more efficiently... If magic handles this sufficiently then there is less need to develop technology and so it is much less likely to advance. It felt like the previous Age had lots technology based on Magic to be used by those who didn't have the power to do it themselves (remember the items that use the one power itself rather than channeling the power into it, so anyone could use it). Stop thinking the previous Age was Start Trek, think more Dishonored.
He never said it was Star Trek bro, he just said sci-fi. And the Age of Legends is definitely sci-fantasy, no one can deny that with the various POV's of Forsaken confirming that. And he SPECIFICALLY said that because this teaser has medieval stuff in it, with that line from Thom talking about The Breaking, he thought they were making the Age of Legends look medieval. Which it is not, the descriptions from Rhuidean already confirm that. But again, these shorts will cover all parts of history so that was probably Artur Hawkwing I'd guess

It's a time when magic is at the very core of society, and all the greatest achievements of humankind are mystical in nature. They gathered to sing music to the fields as mystical plant creatures dance around encouraging growth. The Aes Sedai were the benevolent rulers of the world. Trees are considered the most important features of a city. Yes, some of the achievements of the time paralleled some technology, but Jordan also went out of his way to make it clear that this was entirely unlike a technologically based world. Calling the Age of Legends sci-fi is completely missing the setting. Kind of like calling the Wheel of Time post-apocalyptic, or the trope I'm hearing more people repeat that the Wheel of Time main setting is Victorian. I'm unsure why a lot of people want to pretend that WoT is not high fantasy, but it clearly is... through and through.
@@cdsmithus Age of Legends is sci-fi AND fantasy. Sci-fantasy, pretty sure everyone can agree with this no? Technology and channeling to create a utopia, only for its upper class to go too far and unleash something catastrophic leading to their downfall. That's a pretty sci-fi theme right there. Forsaken also mention and allude to various technology and science as well as magic that has been lost since The Breaking, and depictions of the first war with the Shadow from Rhuidean have straight up sci-fi tech they use for war (again alongside channeling). Science and fantasy - sci-fantasy, it's both. Daniel isn't saying the Age of Legends is just sci-fi, it's not close to hard sci-fi, he was just saying that because it's definitely NOT medieval and that's what he thought they were gonna set that time in.
I remember the waiting time between the books, specially the last ones after Robert passed away (Brandon did a great job, do I agree on every story arch, no, but it is still fantastic). The anticipation of the TV series make me feel the same way, like a little boy waiting for Christmas. Also I'm more than a little curious about how they play out the character-building and story progression that happens inside the different characters heads. Anyways just 5 day left
The infrastructure and technology of the Age of Legends deteriorated during the War of Power. By the time of the Breaking it was less scifi and more medieval: the Aiel left on their mission with horse drawn wagons, not Jo-cars and Sho-wings.
Actually, traditional tv DOES kinda do this sometimes...by releasing bonus webisodes on their channel websites. (Alternatively, they could play these kinds of shorts before or after the credits, or on a holiday or something; or as bonus content on disc.) But, yes, it's a natural next step-to bring it into the streaming age.
If you remember when mat beats gawyn and galad after the fight their teacher asks everyone who was the greatest swordsman ever and they answer jerome gaidin(think thats his name) and the teacher tells them he was beaten only once and that by a farmer with a quarterstaff so the greatest warder story is probably him
That sounds very unlikely as the others are all videos about the core lore relating to s1 and not even the encyclopedia has much of anything about Jaerom. I wager this is a video about Malkier and Lan.

also these all seem to be far in the past breaking of the world, fall of manetheren, saidin saidar and stone(probably creation of stone of tear?) and white tower probably formation of it and overall about it so i dont think lan fits there
@@olorin3815 But Jaerom is just an obscure reference with no backstory from Jordan himself, it sounds a pretty random choice for a lore video that wouldn’t even be canonical. The rumour is Lan’s story has been changed and he has a longer past as a warder before Moiraine bonded him when she was raised. He is something of a legend in the Tower even as the story opens.

At the end of the breaking the world, they had already been at war for years. So dirty and chaotic would seem to be the state of everyone and eveyrthing. These look fantastic. I am really liking what we see with WoT so far. They have a need for content in the future so maybe we will see something like this for season 2 and the introduction of the Seanchan, Hawkwing would be more suitable then.
I've thought for a while that using short films aside from the episodes would be a great way to include a lot of the side stories and characters doing things not immediately relevant to the plot.
Just want to clear the xray thing up. Xray is an existing feature on Prime Video where you can see a list of which actors are in the scene at the moment that you paused. So presumably each episode of WoT will have an associated animated short that we will see when you access Xray during the episode. I'm incredibly excited, though I'm slightly bummed that the AoL doesn't look as sci-fi as I'd hoped :(
I don't see why you'd think of the Age of Legends as sci-fi. It's clearly not. It's an utopian world dominated by a society of magic users, populated by people dancing with magical plant creatures to make the crops grow. There are a few achievements that parallel the modern world, but they are achievements driven by magic, not technology.

About this could never happen on television, I would like to disagree because we had the Clone Wars short mini-series prior to the revenge of the sith that was pretty epic.
I almost posted the same thing, that was the first thing I thought of. The DVD equivalent would be like The Animatrix, or the animated shorts they did with Batman Begins and the first GI Joe movie. Filling the world in with a separate series of animated concontent. I always love when they do that.

Oh man, the tonal shift might very well be why they're doing it as shorts so they don't have to have "flashbacks" to sci-fi, which would be confusing for a lot of people, but putting it as bonus features allows people who want to get into deep lore to be able to without giving "whiplash" to the more general audience of the show.
Would not be complaining if the Wheel of Time turned to a Malazan-y style. Definitely get that from an art perspective
The art is absolutely beautiful. But I agree they're getting the AoL legends completely wrong unless "the collapse" between the opening of the bore and the war of power was so degenerative. But that hardly explains a reversion to Medieval styles and architecture.
Most of the stuff they show is after the breaking.

The Blu Rays for Game of Thrones did something similar. They weren’t animated this well, but they were cool shorts that provided background and history.

I am still super hesitant about this show. The tone of this looks better than the show. But also knowing Rafe "agreed to disagree" with Harriet and Brandon on certain changes makes me super nervous. I have literally read this series in full like six or seven time, some individual books as many times as there are books. It's far more important to me than any other adaptations or book series. I want to love... But I am very trepidatious.
I am not nearly as invested as you are in the series, but I too am apprehensive. The tone of the trailers seems off to me, and it could simply be a product of poor marketing, but certain stylistic choices make me anxious.

To possibly answer your question mid watch: The breaking might be shown as medieval if this is "A story as if told to you by Thom" because modern 3rd Age folk don't know the full glorious appearance of the Age of Legends
I was actually expecting something like this. That top-down view of the Hall of the Tower from the trailer stood out like a sore thumb, as in there's no way that's a shot from the actual show. It looks very similar to the top-down view we had of Aes Sedai walking in this teaser.

It was clearly detailed that by the time the DO was sealed up at the end of the War of Power that most of the technology was destroyed or lost already. The breaking that occurred over the years that followed had more to with the continents being destroyed or shifted.

Hopefully this gives a hint on what they are gonna giva us wit LOTR: a series and then more extra, that explains (and narrates) a lot of lore that can´t be so detailly told in action.

This reminds me of the Game of Thrones history and lore videos that were included in the DVD. Amazon seems to be doing something similar but included in the X-Ray feature.
Daniel, just cause the age before the Breaking had 'futuristic technology' doesn't mean it was a Sci-fi sterile place like Star Trek. I viewed it more like a Steam Punk thing, mixing magic with Tech similar to how Arcane is showing it. The inclusion of Magic would change how tech develops and even slow it down to a certain degree. Most technology advancements in history happened because there was a need to do something better/faster/more efficiently... If magic handles this sufficiently then there is less need to develop technology and so it is much less likely to advance. It felt like the previous Age had lots technology based on Magic to be used by those who didn't have the power to do it themselves (remember the items that use the one power itself rather than channeling the power into it, so anyone could use it). Stop thinking the previous Age was Start Trek, think more Dishonored.
He never said it was Star Trek bro, he just said sci-fi. And the Age of Legends is definitely sci-fantasy, no one can deny that with the various POV's of Forsaken confirming that. And he SPECIFICALLY said that because this teaser has medieval stuff in it, with that line from Thom talking about The Breaking, he thought they were making the Age of Legends look medieval.
Which it is not, the descriptions from Rhuidean already confirm that. But again, these shorts will cover all parts of history so that was probably Artur Hawkwing I'd guess

It's a time when magic is at the very core of society, and all the greatest achievements of humankind are mystical in nature. They gathered to sing music to the fields as mystical plant creatures dance around encouraging growth. The Aes Sedai were the benevolent rulers of the world. Trees are considered the most important features of a city. Yes, some of the achievements of the time paralleled some technology, but Jordan also went out of his way to make it clear that this was entirely unlike a technologically based world. Calling the Age of Legends sci-fi is completely missing the setting. Kind of like calling the Wheel of Time post-apocalyptic, or the trope I'm hearing more people repeat that the Wheel of Time main setting is Victorian. I'm unsure why a lot of people want to pretend that WoT is not high fantasy, but it clearly is... through and through.

Technology and channeling to create a utopia, only for its upper class to go too far and unleash something catastrophic leading to their downfall. That's a pretty sci-fi theme right there. Forsaken also mention and allude to various technology and science as well as magic that has been lost since The Breaking, and depictions of the first war with the Shadow from Rhuidean have straight up sci-fi tech they use for war (again alongside channeling). Science and fantasy - sci-fantasy, it's both.
Daniel isn't saying the Age of Legends is just sci-fi, it's not close to hard sci-fi, he was just saying that because it's definitely NOT medieval and that's what he thought they were gonna set that time in.

My first though at the images of the king make me think Trollocs Wars and Artur Hawkwing.
I remember the waiting time between the books, specially the last ones after Robert passed away (Brandon did a great job, do I agree on every story arch, no, but it is still fantastic). The anticipation of the TV series make me feel the same way, like a little boy waiting for Christmas. Also I'm more than a little curious about how they play out the character-building and story progression that happens inside the different characters heads. Anyways just 5 day left
The infrastructure and technology of the Age of Legends deteriorated during the War of Power. By the time of the Breaking it was less scifi and more medieval: the Aiel left on their mission with horse drawn wagons, not Jo-cars and Sho-wings.

Actually, traditional tv DOES kinda do this sometimes...by releasing bonus webisodes on their channel websites. (Alternatively, they could play these kinds of shorts before or after the credits, or on a holiday or something; or as bonus content on disc.) But, yes, it's a natural next step-to bring it into the streaming age.
If you remember when mat beats gawyn and galad after the fight their teacher asks everyone who was the greatest swordsman ever and they answer jerome gaidin(think thats his name) and the teacher tells them he was beaten only once and that by a farmer with a quarterstaff so the greatest warder story is probably him
That sounds very unlikely as the others are all videos about the core lore relating to s1 and not even the encyclopedia has much of anything about Jaerom. I wager this is a video about Malkier and Lan.

also these all seem to be far in the past breaking of the world, fall of manetheren, saidin saidar and stone(probably creation of stone of tear?) and white tower probably formation of it and overall about it so i dont think lan fits there
@@olorin3815 But Jaerom is just an obscure reference with no backstory from Jordan himself, it sounds a pretty random choice for a lore video that wouldn’t even be canonical. The rumour is Lan’s story has been changed and he has a longer past as a warder before Moiraine bonded him when she was raised. He is something of a legend in the Tower even as the story opens.

They have a need for content in the future so maybe we will see something like this for
season 2 and the introduction of the Seanchan, Hawkwing would be more suitable then.
I've thought for a while that using short films aside from the episodes would be a great way to include a lot of the side stories and characters doing things not immediately relevant to the plot.
Just want to clear the xray thing up. Xray is an existing feature on Prime Video where you can see a list of which actors are in the scene at the moment that you paused. So presumably each episode of WoT will have an associated animated short that we will see when you access Xray during the episode. I'm incredibly excited, though I'm slightly bummed that the AoL doesn't look as sci-fi as I'd hoped :(
I don't see why you'd think of the Age of Legends as sci-fi. It's clearly not. It's an utopian world dominated by a society of magic users, populated by people dancing with magical plant creatures to make the crops grow. There are a few achievements that parallel the modern world, but they are achievements driven by magic, not technology.
