Little tip: If you have some cordage you can always tie op your leg to the floation device and still swim down and be connected. Also, noodles work well, without a cord but there must be calm conditions. Happy you are still with us Gabe.

Hey Gabe, nice comment on the price differences between Hawaii and Maldives. It’s truly shocking how expensive some places in the US have become. It makes me wonder, you’ve got places like the Canary Islands (also a volcanic archipelago and tourist hotspot full of beauty) that’s far away from mainland Spain (like Hawaii is to the US) yet everything there is so much more cheaper than Spain (far cheaper than Hawaii, maybe cheaper than Maldives) and it also retains its historical identity and hasn’t became too comercial. I think I should make a video on that.. Long gone are the easy days of budget traveling, and it’s only gonna keep getting more expensive. Great video.

To be honest these islands are also a very small portion of the maldives remember there's more than a 1000 islands. And tourists usually stay in islands near malé were there aren't a lot of local living in the islands. Usually the islands are way more beautiful the further north and south you go

@@bramsleon6852 Male is NOT a tourist destination is never was and Maldives don't sell it such, Gabriel is very close to Male which is really a service center/logistics to support all the nice islands either well north or south of Male. The city is over crowded with bikes and people, there is not enough room which is why Maldives Gov have taken out huge loans to reclaim land and build condos which IMO destroying what Maldives once was, it's chasing the tourist money, look at what they are doing to the airport, it still a small airport but they are building a huge international terminal right on top of it. It is what it is at this point, no turning back.
And just FYI Ive been to the Maldives 3 times in the past year and will be back before the end of the year. Many people want to go to MALE but you it is what it is, why you think when you get of an aircraft, after exiting the arrivals hall you see 30-50 hotel reps waiting people to whisk you away from Male and to some nicer island.

There is clear erosion visible when you first get to the beach, with tree roots exposed by the advancing ocean. The Maldives are suffering from rising sea levels due to climate change. Given that fragility and precariousness, the islanders must be alarmed at how easily their lives could just wash away and must need to do a lot of rebuilding just to postpone the seemingly inevitable end to a lifestyle that their ancestors have enjoyed for many generations. Perhaps then it's no sin that building materials are visible. This is a real country and not just a tourist resort, and doubtless on the private islands they hide reality better.

I'm a scuba coach for 20+ years, and I'm listening to your story. Allow me to offer some advice. About your camera, get a clip so that it is attached to your body at all times. Sometimes you need your arms and you don't want to lose your camera. Don't use a wrist holder, get something clipped to your torso, so having some sort of belt across your chest or waist for your camera to be attached is great. Or, if your swimming shorts have something to attach a clip to. I've seen a lot of people lose their cameras when attached to your wrist. And, about a lifejacket... you can take one... and hold it under your stomach without wearing it. use it as a floatation device... and swim down, and then come up. When a lifejacket is resting on your belly, it is easier to look underwater with your mask and snorkel and you can relax as well... save your energy :)

Doesn't look like there's much arable land. Do all of the supplies have to be shipped in from India? Must be quite the logistics challenge with so many islands. No wonder some of the resorts are so expensive!

when you dive down you should remove the snorkel from your mouth, when you go back up, you don't need the snorkel in your mouth to breathe. that is the good, common practice.
you should have a lanyard for the camera, so if you need your hands/arms for swimming, your camera is secured.
you could also carry a cheap dive buoy with an elastic bungee cord, so boats see you and you have a floating device in case you get cramps.
