The Maldives sure has changed a lot since we visited in 1992. All we knew before we arrived was what we read in an outdated lonely planet guide, so we did have a bit of culture shock on our arrival. Tourists were not encouraged in Male at that time, and the resort we stayed at was far away and extremely basic. One of our best travel experiences ever, including some scary and very funny moments. Also, none of these things would happen today - the Maldives and travelling there have come a long way. Scary moment 1 - arriving in Male at 1.30am into an airport looking like a huge shed, we were greeted by military style border personnel with very large guns strapped over their shoulders. Everyone's suitcase was opened and completely searched. 😳 We didn't know that would happen. Scary moment 2 - our arranged boat transfer to an island resort did not arrive at the time we had been advised and very few people spoke English, so it was hard to find out any information - mobile phones were not common and we didn't have one. Also, when we went out of the hotel to look for our boat driver (maybe he was waiting outside..?), the locals clearly did not like us being out there on the street - tourists in Male were discouraged back then. 😟 We weren't aware of 'Maldivian time'.. Scary moment 3 - Once we finally met up with our transfer, the small boat broke down in the middle of a very large lagoon. We were completely alone, islands all around but too far to swim to. So we had to wait, in the sun, for our driver to check engine parts and clean out the fuel filter to fix it. Glad he knew what to do! What should have taken 45mins took 2 and half hrs. The island staff were so relieved to see us on our arrival! So yes a few scary moments, but after that our holiday was fantastic!! 😎🌴🏖
I went to the Maldives in 2021 and it was the best trip of my life. I stayed in an island resort and couldn’t explore the local islands cause of Covid, but the Maldivian people are the nicest and friendliest I’ve ever met
I loved Maldives being as a local tourist. I explored unexplored, that's how I feel about my trip. At first I was really anxious but I don't regret it at all. The only downside was, I went in August so I didn't get much of a sunlight 😅 but sunshine was perfect!
I'm glad you saw the other islands because most people just go there to stay at the luxury villas and probably don't realise what's going on in the rest of the country. Like many other places (Dubai etc) I feel like locals and foreign workers would be exploited and god knows what's happening to the environment
My mates family lives in the Maldives, got to experience the real maldives and it did not disappoint, also went to a few resorts and it was amazing. Everyone is nice and friendly too, had such a good time

Understand u have a camera recording urself but, having one friend would make these trips 100x funnier/better. Understandable if you had to pay for them but it’ll be beyond worth it & prob make u more “adventurous” having another person with u
I too have covered Maldives stay for two persons at dirt cheap price in 2020. Really happy that I visited this island like a local. Wish to go there one more time because of its cost effectiveness.

As someone who loves the water but has a lifelong phobia of sharks (thanks Jaws) that was really impressive. I don't think I could do that! I have seen small reef sharks while snorkeling but quickly swam away
Any tourist wondering why there are kids everywhere walking alone to school its because the schools not that far away and also 7 year olds go to school because everyone has tight knitted community near where they live so not much to worry about
As a maldivian im sooo happy that you are covering this side of my country btw its really cheap right the villas and the resorts are way wayy too expensive
Crazy to think, some of the most BEAUTIFUL places/countries on planet earth, are the ones who are struggling the most. I know there’s a more logical/economical reasoning but in perceptive wise, would think the best/most beautiful places/countries to live, would be some of the most prosperous ones
i agree with Asif, as a maldivian myself. i live on an island and it is way better than living in Male, though i have to import a lot of stuff like vegetables here from male or more developed is lands. i reccomend you visit Addu or L.Gan instead sincee its more peaceful there

1.Bro im used stepping on rocks at the beach yes i may have got some injuries.......But on the bright side look at the fishes you see right near shore❤ 2.I love when my dad collect coconuts from palmtrees❤❤❤😂

This is pretty accurate to what maldives is like and as a maldivian i can confirm this is somewhat accurate but not fully accurate he didnt explore whole malé and he also didnt stay there for a year or so to get the full experience but yeah its pretty accurate to how maldives is like
