Honestly if the farmer thought it was a horse thief I'm surprised he didn't come out armed. He was uninformed, but he laughed it off when he was convinced he was wrong instead of doubling down and escalating, like so many would.

Horse theft is pretty common in more rural areas. We Had a woman try to steal several of our horses that we had bought from her and had the bills of sale for. She managed to take one while we were at school and hold it for a couple months, but we got him back in the end. She lost custody of her kids and isn't allowed to own another horse.

Here in Texas, a lot of places used to count horse theft a capital offense with the penalty of death. The idea behind it was if you stole someones horse and left them stranded in the deadly and uninhabited mass most of the state was back then (and a large portion still is), you might as well have murdered them yourself. While such laws have changed, still a fun story my history teacher told me.

Horse theft is a fairly common thing, and still pretty serious offense in some places! Like Montana! Some years ago in western MT a couple who owned a riding stable were murdered and their horses driven off overland across the nearby MT/ID border. Never heard how it turned out, but MT charged the perps with horse theft because at that time at least MT law allowed the death penalty for horse theft, but not murder.

We actually kinda have a stolen horse in our family field. A few years ago a taxi driver turned up at our house with one of the yard girls from the racing stable my uncle works at. We own a 13 acre field that is directly across from our front door. The girl tells us that she saw a bunch of youths dragging this little Shetland pony around on a motorbike on a traveller site, not a legal site, a road side site. She waited for the youths to leave, called a taxi and begged the driver to help get the pony here. The driver, an animal lover, brought them for free, we lived 40 miles from where they found the pony. She was in not in the best of shape, she was very skinny and distrusting of people, she had a couple of open wounds and conjunctivitis. She went into our field, the vet got her patched up and 3 years on her name is Peaches, she is a little menace, she loves getting out of the fence, more than once I've found her in the garden. Overall she's a happy and healthy pony. She lives with a grumpy old retired racehorse and another pony Lilly, providing she doesn't try stealing Grumpus's food, she's got a good life. She did steal his food once while wearing a coat. He picked up her back end and ran her down the field, my poor uncle fell over laughing as her little front legs tried to keep up with Grumpus. So yeah, that's the story of Peaches, our stolen Shetland.

Just like dropping your car off at the mechanic, unless you specifically authorize repairs, places can’t just start throwing parts in and fixing it. If the person decides they don’t want to pay to have the work done and it’s already done, the shop has to eat that cost. You are paying for diagnosis until you authorize repair.

LOL, I once worked for Direct TV in the tech call center. Had a guy call in with two houses that he said it wasn't anything I suggested it might be. I had already run tests from my end so suggest he look at the satellite dish and cable from it to the inside. He swore up and down it couldn't be that. I begged him to please check. First dish, he came back to the phone and sheepishly said "You won't believe this, but there was a large toad the same color as the dish sitting on the center of the dish and covering the things coming out from the center. Would that have cause the issue?" I said, that yes it would. He had removed the toad and checked the TV's then. Perfect reception for his first house. Second house - he checked and found his horse had kicked the dish off the fence post he had installed it on. He put it back on and we aligned it together over the phone and it then worked perfectly. So a toad and a horse interfering with the receiving dish's.

I used to work as an officer and this is one of my stories:
I was working the normal shift, y’know. 8 hours of sitting by the local Walmart waiting for something to happen when a lady came up to me ( I am older than I look so I probably looked about 16 to her) and rapped on my window. I rolled it down slowly. She stared at me for a moment and then said, “What are you doing?”. I looked at her for a second. “What does it look like I'm doing ma’am?”. She looked shocked that I didn't give her an answer and proceeded to start telling me how disrespectful I was for talking to an older woman like that. I just rolled my eyes and put the window up. She rapped on my window for another few minutes before finally giving me a smug look and storming off and walking into the store. I continued to sip my coffee and watch for any lawbreakers. Ten minutes past and guess who came by again? Karen. She was with somebody else this time. It was a tall man, yellow and blue uniform. Probably the Walmart manager. I rolled my window down once again. “Hello young lady, can you please step out of the car?” I stared at him. I have social anxiety so I get nervous around 2 people. It's odd, if there's one person in direct contact I'm fine. But if there's two I just break down. I stepped out of the car warily. He asked where my parents were. I looked at him in disbelief. He thought I was 15! (I'm 23!) I nicely told him “Sir, I'm 23, why would my parents be here.”. Keep in mind that my car looks nothing like a cop car. It's painted the generic white with the typical small cop light. I was a trainee at the time so I didn't look the part either. Karen continued onto tell him that I sat in the car and ignored her when she asked what I was doing. “Ma’am, I am in the [ My States Police Crew] and if you have a problem just call our non-emergency number. And then it all came out. She accused me of littering while she passed by and smirking while laughing at her. That was even the worst of it. She also said that I shouldn't be married. She probably saw my wedding ring. “Your husband should be ashamed of you!”. She was wrong about one thing. I told her “Oh! Would you like to see a picture of him?”. She took out her phone and said “Oh that would be great!”. She was probably going to try to use that in a terrible way. I pulled out my wallet and slowly pulled a picture out. I flipped it around. She started at the photo for a moment. “Show me a real picture of you two!” She said annoyed. “Oh, but this is him. Oh, I'm sorry I meant my girlfriend!”. She stopped immediately, almost dropping her phone. I think she panicked knowing she was in the presence of a gay. She muttered “Fag***.” under her breath. I told the store manager that I would make sure that he doesn't see her again. She stormed back to her car and drove off. Best part? I got her license plate number.

The HORSE took out the side of the truck?
I can beat that...well...actually it was an Uncle of mine.
one of my uncles had a campervan...a very nice campervan...custom built campervan ( expensive lol ).
One day he and my aunt were driving along the side of a small private airfield, all of a sudden my aunt screamed. Uncle looked up...only to see a a single engine light plane heading right for them...keep in mind he's driving along the ROAD ! Said light aircraft 'twisted' slightly and the lower wing tip scrapped alongside the van. Uncle swears he has no idea how the pilot kept it in the air at the time....but it recovered, flew away and a few minutes later he saw it come in for a landing on the grass strip airfield...portside wing tip crumpled up.
So obviously Unc drove around and found the entrance and drove in. Found the pilot and passenger...who was apparently leaning over and throwing up ( I can't say I'm surprised...I think I would have been as well had it been me !) . Anyway...obviously Unc made an official complaint, guy lost his license for trying to act like 'Biggles' ( google it ). The fun part came when he put in a claim for the damages to his campervan.
He filled in the forms and duly sent them of...they came back. So he filled them in again and ( again ) sent them of...this went on for some time. Eventually the insurance Co sent a rep along and told Unc that these forms were unacceptable. Unc naturally asked 'why'? . This is obviously paraphrased...but went something along these lines.
'What? you were hit by a low flying aircraft? That's ridiculous' ! Unc pulled out a load of photos...of the van next to the plane, the damage to the plane and his campervan, the pilot and passenger. Then added a few extra ones of the police that had been called out for good measure.
    Claim approved lol ;-)

He drove up his truck with no bed at all and I went to work. I made him out a building list, and gave it to him. I was using 3" channel iron for the crossmembers. He looked at the list, and saw the 3" crossmembers and said that he was just going to use 4x4s for crossmembers. I answered, well it is your truck, but if you want me to build the bed, we are using the 3" crossmembers. He looked at me and smiled, then said 3" crossmembers will be fine. In the state I live in, if someone breaks into your home, and you shoot them as they are running away, you will be arrested and charged (which to me makes total sense). However, if someone comes on your property and attempts to steal any farm animals/live stock (i.e. horses, cattle, even chickens) you can shoot them anywhere you want, even in the back while they are trying to get away! As a matter of fact if someone got away with your live stock, and you know who it was, you can legally go to their home and shoot them there of you have to,, to retrieve your property,! A threat to one's life is just that. But, a threat to one's livelihood is not tolerated.

Actually, part of it has to do with a stupid law that states that if someone trespasses on your land, and gets hurt, they might be able to sue you, despite the fact they were committing a crime. So, it quite literally pays to be hostile and run off trespassers as quickly as possible, before they do something moronic.
The other part is, horses are precious fur babies and must be protected from suspicious strangers!
They're like pets. Just more expensive!
      .
And, technically, you could use a truck to push over fences, then just walk a docile horse off the property through the gaps.

      It was a F150, that's a pick up..
In theory he could load the horse on the bed.
He could also get on the horse and ride out or lead the horse on the side of the truck (while sitting in the truck).
It all depends on the character and training of the horse, thinking it was a docile ranch horse all of the above could be a possible.
Ranch horses tend to be well trained because of the work they need to do.
This includes riding brideless and bareback because ranchers and workers need their hands free to handle the cow's or other work so the horses are trained to respond on leg and weight changes/cue's of the rider.
A well trained horse can take years to get there and still be useless because of it's character.
So ranchers are pretty posessive of their good horses (even if the horse could be a cheap one on paper)
The same goes for the competition horses who are worth way more than a regular ranch horse..
Some are rediculusy expensive as in worth more than a avarage mansion, way more....
I have seen prices for a bit of seed going up to 10,000 dollar or more, yes a bit of sperm..
And that is not even talking about lawsuit's.
If the trespasser get's hurt even if it's his or her own fault by the horse, it can be grounds for suing the rancher.
So the rancher is not stupid.

I used to work at chip level motherboard service, we got lot of Karen's as such getting their systems. Who did not pay for the diagnosis. You see figuring out what the problem is takes about 70% of time and effort. Then 30% to rectify the problem. But entitled people do not understand that for just figuring out their issue they need to pay. So we also usually did not charge them. Hopefully they agree to repair it and accept the parts replacement. But occasionally there were some. Who would wait for diagnosis and once they learnt what has to be replaced. They tell they'll come back.. And ask for the laptop /pc. And they go out and get it replaced somewhere else for cheaper. (because diagnosis is already known) and as the OP SAys, there would be lot of junk that we have already cleaned during diagnosis. So others would do it for cheaper. As half work is already done by us for free. Maliciouscompliance : so whenever we have some jerk asking to return their device for second opinion or he says he will come back later to get it repaired, we quietly remove 1 ~2 IC/capacitor/resistor that only we would know is missing and will put it back if the jerk customer really comes back to us. If they go for second opinion and don't come back. We just use it as a dead donor parts.

I hate using phones after working in my husband's computer store for five years. I would leave v/m only to have someone call back and tell me they didn't listen to the msg or they would show up just like this Karen did, assuming their stuff was ready when it needed approval to order parts before 3pm on Friday. These Karens would come in on a Saturday and flip out when we tell them they didn't call us back so we didn't order the part, so now they have to wait a full week since if we got the ok before 3pm, the big company would have the weekend to ship it to us on the Mon or Tues, now we'll be lucky if the part arrives before Thurs b/c it will get ordered on the Mon. Typically it's VIPs who need their machine fixed ASAP who never listen to their v/m.
Sidenote: As a result of that five years of stupid phone stuff, I never bother setting up v/m on any of my phones, and I never give my # out to anyone outside of work and close friends who know they need to text me only. I can't even tell you what the ringtone sounds like on this new Pixel 4. And I hope I never find out.

For the PC repair I have found that trying to explain to them what went wrong and what they need to do to fix it is superfluous. All you need to tell them is we found the issue one of the memory sticks dies and will need to replacement it'll cost this much. Do you authorize us to make the repair for that much? All they care about is getting the machine working again... They don't care about the technical side of why it's not working or why it's important to have that piece of hardware working. Just tell them how much it'll cost how long it'll take and when they can come pick up their machine.

We got word that near one of our evac shelters the sheriff's office was busy chasing down/stopping horse thieves. Pretty ballsy, cold-hearted opportunistic assholes looking to get a pay out from people's tragedies. Disgusting.

The power supply was defective, and the owner refused to swap it out because I didn't have a receipt. Now, where ever I go, I tend to be memorable because I'm extra-nice to people, crack jokes, and engage with them. He even admitted that he remembered me at one point and told me it was my fault for not insisting on a receipt. I'm not that mouse anymore lol

While there were quite a few lynchings by vigilantes for stealing horses, there was never any law on the books that it was a capital crime. It definitely was a crime and would result in time behind bars, but no court that I've been able to find ever issued a death sentence for the crime of horse theft.
Concerning the last story, if someone says they work there and are reporting for their shift and claims they are going to be late if delayed, the security guard has a duty call the manager to confirm. If the person really doesn't work there then "I don't appreciate being played. Don't even bother to get in line, just leave." Had I been the manager I would have told the security guard, "Since you made him late, he'll be getting full pay. I'll deduct the time he was late from your check."
