I hate to say it, but this would’ve been the perfect end for Makarov. It would’ve shown character development in Erza and how she needs to step up along with Laxus, Mira, and Gildarts. It would’ve shown so much character development in the fairy tail mages. As much it would suck to lose Makarov, it would’ve been one of the best scenes in the new season
Thats what the anime destroyed. The power of friendship wins every Single fight. Everything will be a happy end at the end of a struggling Situation. The autor knew what he was doing. He could make fairy tail to one of the best anime in the entire history or at least the best hentai. Instead he chooses a Version of an anime which could be sooo much better ....
I thought so to, it felt to light after it was revealed that he survived, i cried reading the manga and watching it after knowing what was about to happen, because i forgot that he survived.
What Makarov did mirrored in a sense what whitebeard did in the war, old man keeping the young ones save so a new leaf, a new generation, can grow strong.
Makarov took a stand and it was a epic heartfelt one and then, just out of knowhere, fairy tail just could not grow up :/

Makarov's "Death" low-key could had gone down in history as one of the most emotional, badass & fitting final moments in all of anime.
i hated how they soiled such a heroic death as his final act was protecting his family. i dont understand why the creator really wants to keep everyone alive.

@@Alex-2-5-1 An artist being attached to the characters they write is quite normal and understandable, so they might not want to kill any of the characters they grew very fond of, just like a parent wouldn't want their child to die. A manga doesn't need permanent death for moments like this to be emotional. Look at Dragon Ball, death has no meaning in that world because you can just wish anybody back if they didn't die from natural causes(and even then, with the Super Dragon Balls any kind of wish is possible now), but death moments still hit hard even though you know the characters are gonna come back in the end. DC and Marvel comic books are the same, heroes die and revive everytime, doesn't mean that when your favorite hero "dies" that their "death" doesn't hit you hard.

This scene is so powerful in so many ways:
- Makarov sacrifices himself to save his kids just like the badass father/leader we have come to know he is
- Mavis is there to see it and breaks down because she can't bear to see him die. She named him and he is the reason she started valuing life again.
- Natsu and Grey are unaffected by seeing the light because they are so consumed with their own issues they are blinded to everything else.
- Erza bows respectfully to Makarov because he is the only real parent she has ever known and respected.

when I first read this in the manga, I actually cried when I thought he really died. That was definitely one of Makarov's epic scene... but towards the end, I felt betrayed because he was still alive and kicking. I still think Makarov's death would be a great turning point for FT... only to be ruined once again.
According to rumors, Hiro Mashima didn't have the guts to end Makarov even at a situation like this.
Truth to be told, neither would I had.
to be honest i would have done the same thing, i wouldn't be able to let Makarov die simply because i am way to invested in the characters every singel one of them (in the Fairy Tail Guild) sometimes when you write you feel a connection to the characters and then having to kill one is nearly impossible
FT was really bad about that. Creating impactful sacrifice scenes, only to say ' surprise, they actually survived '
He can give up on characters in the beginning bc his connection to them is not strong (Ul, Simon, Layla, etc) and they were created to be death. And that's why ppl enjoy the story. However, with the characters that he spent years on writing, it must be hard for him to let them go even though he good at writing those stuff, that was his weakness. If i remember correctly, Ultear is the last one he let go that are considered a main character (plus Mavis & Zeref).

Fairy Law magic spell was from Zeref which is taught to Mavis which in turn taught to other Fairy Tail's guild masters and certain class S/class A wizards.
Zeref's Alvarez Empire is fighting the Zeref's and Anna's related participants from the original anti-Acnologia plan.

The music is just making more drama
The way they handled Makarov was an absolute slap in the face to what could have been an AMAZING end to one of the best parental figures in anime.
Imagine this scenario; they don’t cop out and Makarov dies casting this spell. The scene plays out mostly the same, but they don’t reveal him in a wheelchair, but instead find stack of papers that Makarov had written before the battle even began. He had always planned on using Fairy Law, knowing full well that it would kill them. Knowing this, he wrote a personalized letter to each and every member of fairy tail saying everything he had ever wanted to say to his children.
For Natsu, he gives him official permission to go on the 100 year quest and briefs him on what it will entail
For Gray, he might have found a wizard or a study or something that focused specifically on the Iced Shell spell, possibly even how to reverse it
For Lucy, maybe he gives her a lead on where Aquariuses key might be. It’s not much, but it’s a start
For Erza, he reveals that he always thought of her as the daughter he never had. While he thought of all of Fairy Tail as his children, the bond he had with Erza was special
The premise of each of these letters is how much he loved all of them, and to remind them that even though he’s gone, that will never change. They will always be fairy tail wizards, and he would always be watching them grow and couldn’t express how proud he was.
The arc progresses as normal; Laxus carrying his grandfathers body back to the guild, but instead of ending the series at Lucy’s book award party, we end it at Makarovs funeral. Every (good guy) character we’ve ever seen in the series is there to pay respects to the beloved master of Fairy Tail. Erza is at the podium giving the eulogy as the Fairy Tail theme plays softly in the background, the kind of inspirational spiel Erza tends to give in times of crisis. She closes her eyes to sob a little, and one by one, every character is raising their index finger toward the sky, tears streaming down each of their faces. No one says a word as they say a final goodbye to Makarov with the simple fairy tail salute.
Makarovs death had the potential to be one of the most iconic death scenes in anime history; on par with Ace, Koro sensei, and Jiraya. But the didn’t have the balls and copped out on what could have been a phenomenal send off and ending to a beloved character and series.
That would have been perfect
I think every fan just about agrees with this. Death is so powerful of a force that makes stories all the more compelling. It’s why in Naruto the Pain arc is one of the best.
While I am glad he lived, I would indeed call this better than what happened. Though people in the anime likely are glad it happened that way
It all stems back to when Mashima did Rave Master, he never seemed to like killing off his characters and when Sieg died it kinda broke him a little as he was his favorite character.

As much as I love Makarov, this really should have been the way he went out. It was such a satisfying end for an amazing character. Protecting the children he held so dear.

It's sad that the entire moment is ruined because when you have followed the series for long enough you just know that Markarov does not die there...
Not only is this Fairy Tail where the mains cast can't die, but Markarov especially had like 7 Death Flags throughout the entire series that he survived in the end.
It's like with Grey and 'Iced Shell'. No matter how often he crosses his arms, he won't be actually using the magic in the end.
Makarov is an inspiration for every father in the world.
Love protect and guide your family. I'm glad I read this scene in the manga before becoming a father myself.

They really dropped the ball bringing Makarov back from this. As others have already said, this was the *perfect* way to send him off.
Man the entire war arc bad writing at its finest they built the country wizards was atleast 2x stronger than fairytales but everyone literally had 1v1 with no deaths and the one’s who should be dead just woke up or got teleported somewhere else

This is the first time I've cried since having brain surgery. I found out on vacation that I had a tumor and I haven't been able to cry until just now. The doctors already pulled it out but I dont know if its benign yet.

I got the pathology back. Glioma. Lowest form of cancer, not known to return once removed. Further test down the line will tell if I'm still at risk but for now I feel fine. Had to file an accommodation at work and hr has yet to say yes or no to me being able to return. Cant drive until June due to the seizure triggered by the tumor.

My Journey with Fairy Tail was truly an amazing experience. One of the best anime I ever watched and absolutely the best anime soundtrack I ever listened to.
Yet the show gets more hate than it honestly deserves…I really hate the fairy tail “fan” community

Then the fairy queen walks up to him and bows to his greatness. This is such a strong scene
It is a strong scene, and honestly can somewhat see what ppl meant about makarov staying gone as it would impact better for erza and them. But quite honestly even if did happen, honestly who would be fit to be the guild master. Gildarts wouldn’t do it and Macao is weaker than Lucy or Wendy. Erza and Mira would be decent, but quite honestly they’d probably scare new members away. Laxus is now probably the safest choice as he’s actually calmed down compared to the beginning. Kinda best tho that makarov came back for that reason, can continue raising and preparing the proper GMs

No the thing is zeref did have it but the magic was to dangerous because it was an uncompleted spell of black magic which gave mavis the same curse as zeref
this was so perfect but hiromashima had to ruin it by bringing him back.

This scene makes me cry every time and it pisses me off that they later just bring him back. If the spell should kill you because there are too many enemies, then you're dead.
This was such a beautiful end to a character, and should not have been changed.

Again what a perfect ending to Makarov’s story to sacrifice himself for his kids then only to be resurrected and bound to a wheelchair for the remainder of his days
This is one of those moments only long and good written anime can bring out and get over to people
For those cribbing about the plot armour … you gotta admit though, even if we already know Makarov is gonna come back to life, every time we rewatch this, our eyes well up and we briefly even forget about his later revival. That is what makes great emotional moments!

When you realize that maybe mavis was seeing makarov as yuri or was reminiscing about his birth brings tears to my eyes, he was the son of her fellow friend the one that got her out of that island and the reason she founded fairy tail in the first place, that’s all I can think about.

He didnt even die so his sacrifice lost all its value. If he had actually died then it would have been impactful but they just used plot armor, such a shame.
@@lynlyn3258 Thats one of the biggest problems Fairy Tail has, because even knowing the character, in this case, Makarov, wont actually die because plot armor, it still manages to make you feel sad af, now imagine if that character actually did die.
Aizawa Sakura regarding the Aquarius thing, there was always a possibility that Lucy might see Aquarius again since it was established that she wouldn’t die. She now just needs to find her in the sequel. I agree with the rest though. Fairy tail had a ton of potential and it’s a shame it didn’t live up to it cause I love the series.

He truly cares about fairy tail to the point of using " fairy law " to save his " family" even when his godmother - Mavis asked him not to
I entered just like: Ah, I've watched this before and it was epic, let's watch it again.
Now I'm crying.
It still hurts that this wasn't where Makarov's story ended. I get wanting to keep the core cast around, but he isn't a core cast member. His death would have forced the main characters to grapple with a true changing of the guard, as the last old wizard passed on and left the world to the next generation. I really cannot understand Mashima's logic in undermining such an otherwise beautifully written moment.
He originally intended for Makarov to die but some fan send him threats to revive Makarov.

This arc really should have let go of many characters. Makarov's didn't hit me that much, because characters like him tend to die. But Gajeel's really hit me hard. He started as a thug who crucified Levi, but would later willingly absorb powerful curses in his body to save that same girl she crucified, as well as everyone. It was the perfect end for his character and I genuinely sobbed.

idk how to put into words how deeply moving it was to see Erza bow to Makarov like that as a sign of respect and admiration.
I love the expression of Irene and August here. It seems like these two powerhouses are somewhat surprised someone other than them can actually pull off a magic spell on that level.

Should've not bought back Makarov😭. Would've been one of the best endings to a character.
What shocks me is that no brings up the fact that makarov kills literally hundreds of thousands of Alvarez soldiers here and it is said he took out like 70-80% of their troops and they had like a million soldiers. And fairy tail is infamous for their no killing rule

This scene would have been a million times more impactful if he had stayed dead.Would have given the whole war thing, and left a mark on the guild so they could grow and it didn't feel like an ex-machina when they eventually overcame everything... But nah fam Makarov is fine, just has to sit down and rest.

Makarov returned because of the Curse of Contradiction. As long as someone who has it is ALIVE aka Immortal, the side effect is that DEATH is inevitable to people they Love. So what if the one with curse died? It will do thr opposite. It will give LIFE to people they Love. That is the ONE MAGIC thus Makarov was revived thanks to Mavis. It is like how Grandma Chiyo in Naruto revived Gaara.

Even if Makarov had stayed dead, while the final speech was well-written, it’s a horribly written death actually.
There’s a way for everyone to have come out alive without that sacrifice. Even Makarov says it himself that Mavis’s plan would most certainly do it. He still sacrifices himself anyways. That’s why I’m glad they brought him back to life. Because it wasn’t a good death.
