So cool you managed to double-back up to Leeds. I like the city. The record fair sounds fab. Haha. Granny magnet? :-) Such fun to see your pick - ups and the mags too!
I’m not sure if you are familiar with the VC channel, Ryan Kidd. He did a video showing the first 100 Stiff singles. Pretty amazing. There was a LA band called The Beat. That is why they were called English Beat over here in the states. I had no idea there was a British Beat version.
I’ll but Israelites every time I see it in a bin😂 What a great set of 45s you found!! Dave likes to remind me how good Toots was live since he got to see them live and I never got the chance. Anything Cramps …yeah just buy it all!😂Just can’t stop it is one of the few records I have more than on copy of ( and on every format ). Those little shops with piles of stuff are a dying breed around here…just can’t keep up with hipster taste and rising rents. If we ever make it over there, I hope you fellas will show us the good spots to dig.
@@BeaSides Hello 👋 Israelites is a great song and I saw Desmond Dekker doing it live back in 85 but that updated version just ain't as good as the original,I was quite disappointed with it but because I'm collecting all the British STIFF label singles,I had to buy it. As for the CRAMPS,I can't get enough of them....definitely in my top five USA bands 👍👍👍 A lot of folk rate THE BEAT higher than the SPECIALS,they certainly don't get the plaudits they so richly deserve 👍👍👍
Like Christmas without the Mistletoe 😂. Silly Games is a wonderful song. Some great albums as well. I haven’t listened to Psychedelic Jungle in ages so will be digging it out this evening. Andy
@@andygladwin2049 Hello there, many thanks for stopping by 👍👍👍 I really enjoyed everything I picked up from Leeds, except the STIFF copy of the ISRAELITES,shame really 😕 If you want to complete a collection though, you got to take the rough with the smooth.
Hi Nick. Great to hear about the fair. I lived in Leeds for 10 years and used to go to record fairs at the Corn Exchange. Btw, I used to play in a Ska band that did a version of Cars!
@@jamesgriffithsmusic Hello James....Leeds has become my favourite record fair and not forgetting the three record shops we visit afterwards. The fair at Reading University is a good sized one too but it's a bit cheeky charging £4 to get in 😕 A Ska version of CARS,now that is something I'd definitely like to hear 👍👍👍
The British Beat? Isn't that the Rozzers? Sounds like you had another excellent time. Leeds is a nice city shame about the football club. I found few ska singles some beat up but they are pretty robust and play well. Maybe another time I'll join you up there. Not ATM as very busy.
It's good of you to support that new up & comer by getting his 7" 😂 Desmond Dekker on Stiff! Never knew of that. Love the first two Cramps records. I gotta say all of the bands that had to use the UK or English pre-fix were way better than the ones who got to keep their names. There's so many great roots, ska & dub comps. It's a good way to get the songs from all of those hard to find 7"s. I only had Slayed? for years and thanks to people like you & the Mike's I now have their first 6 records. What a great band. Leeds was very good to you mate. Cheers...Ben
@@benrankins4446 The up & coming artist....what can I say 🤣🤣🤣 Desmond Dekker on Stiff....a bit if an odd bedfellows thing ??? You'd think that if you're a band with a record deal etc... You'd have to register your name etc... with some sort of organisation that deals with all that pre-fix nonsense etc... to stop any confusion.....makes sense don't you think ??? SLADE.....blow ya *ucking balls off !!!
Hi Nick. I'm just back from this months record fair. The Grannies of Leeds were really disappointed that you weren't with me 😂😂😂 I gave that version of Israelites a listen and agree it's not great, but I'd still buy it because it's on Stiff. Desmond Dekker also released a version of Many Rivers To Cross on Stiff, not sure how that one sounds. Nice pick ups mate especially from Wall Of Sound Cheers 👍👍👍
@@mikevinylspiral Looking forward to seeing what you picked up and I'll definitely be up there again in Jan/Feb . I definitely want to go back to wall of sound 👍👍👍 I'm compiling a list of all the Stiff singles and trying to collect them all myself....I should be concentrating my efforts on other more important areas of my collection really and filling in the gaps !!! We will have to do video's showing what stiff singles we've got .
As a collector of the more “obsessive” variety, I completely get your reasoning for getting the Decker Stiff 7”, Nick. Whether it’s the best or worst thing in the catalogue, if you’re aiming for a full collection, it’s a hole until you’ve got it. There’s a few New Order singles that I think are pretty poor but I still had to have ‘em! 👍🏼
@@JimmyBarnesYT Yes mate totally agree with your thoughts, such a shame though that an iconic song was basically ruined. He would have been better off just writing and recording something totally new 🤔🤔🤔
The Beat were called 'The English' because of the USA band with the same name. The US Beat were also known as Paul Collins Beat. The USA band were absolutely fantastic as well, great guitar led power pop. Paul Collins was in the Nerves who in '76 wrote Hanging On The Telephone, later covered by Blondie and Come Back and Stay later covered by Paul Young in the UK... Both Beats were great... I've known that since about 1988 so I'm pleased you've noticed 😂... Maybe buy a USA Beat LP, or the recent Nerves compilation instead of another copy of Cars, music is an adventure into the unknown I reckon ❤ PS nice to hear the ladies of Leeds were as loose as ever, gawd bless em... Also the 'English' Beat put out a new double album the other year. It's absolutely fantastic. Dave Wakeling has lost none of his songwriting majesty

Been to that little shop underneath Crash! Couldn’t remember what it was called though? Can’t remember everything I got there, but it was mostly 7” singles anyway!
