    I'm slightly disappointed that you didn't underlined the fact that thiago motta is one of la masia alumni. i think this could be clearing the explanation of how he got the ideal for his formation come from. since any of la masia trainee really need to understand any circumstances of the school thought, such as using sweeper keeper as pivotat role to build up possession, and using the space efficiently to make any opportunities. that's why you quickly find similarity between pep and motta, since they are home grown students come from la masia.
    interestingly, both of them had started they career as cdm, since cdm are most versatile role in their school of thought who need to do transition quickly between attacking and defending, thus make them both need to have great understanding on how the formation should be work.
    anyway, this video is really good explanation. keep do post any good summary next. (sorry for my bad english)

    Here's another thing that is probably worth noting:
    When Motta revealed the 2-7-2, the reporters asked if he had named an extra player (since goalkeepers aren't included in formations, that confusion on their part seems understandable).
    It was in response to this that Motta said that he counts the goalkeeper as one of the middle 7.
    Moreover, Motta preferred to not stick to conventional nomenclature of formations because he said that they could give the wrong idea. A 5-3-2 can be used offensively, and a 4-3-3 can be used defensively, depending on the players used. Also, starting formations are quite crude; they don't necessarily reveal what the in-game tactics are.

    Seems many people dun understand what Motta is talking about.
    What Motta is trying to do here is not invent a new set of formation. He intends to provide a new perspective to more accurately reflect the mechanism of the 4-3-3 system.

    Using the formation numbers on a vertical basis makes sense because there’s asymmetry in the vertical direction (2 strikers vs 4 defenders). But this makes me wonder if asymmetry horizontally would make sense ever. Probably not unless you’d be happy to get whipped on the low numbers side. I guess you could illustrate the width of the team (eg more dense wing play would be a 3 -5 - 3)

  • @michaelmetcalfe4882
    @michaelmetcalfe4882 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    At the risk of being simplistic, does the 2-7-2 then simply refer to always having two options on the other side while attacking down the wing, and with a goalkeeper good enough to quickly and accurately distribute it to them when called on to?
    Because surely the vast majority of formations are 2-7-2 if the keeper is comfortable on the ball - 4-4-2, 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1 or the frickin' W-M even.

  • @EMETRL
    @EMETRL 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    it seems like motta is trying to claim that he reinvented the wheel
    Motta is paraphrasing the pure essence of pep's dream team. Flexibility in every player on the pitch, including the goalkeeper. Motta's weird drawing of a 272 could be translated to a fluid midfield-based formation. For example, a 5-4-1 could transition into a 4-1-4-1 very easily, which could then flow into a 4-5-1, which then might become a 4-2-3-1. All that's needed is defensive midfielders that are comfortable in either 3rds. Motta's right though; this new type of defensive midfielder is the upcoming future of football. Players like busquets pioneered the concept, while others like kante and matuidi have shown that it can come in many styles.
    As a barca fan I'm a little curious what motta might say about post-neymar barcelona. It seems like he might see it as a 2-8-1, with messi as the 8th central player who shifts back and forth between the wings and dembele shifting accordingly.

    This is a wild and interesting concept. But people should take notes. The idea can free up the role of 'playmaker' from a midfielder and shift it to the goalkeeper. Allows for more fluidity during a game.

    • @drake6547
      @drake6547 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A playmaking goalkeeper is ludicrous. This concept is overrated. The designated role of a playmaker is to create chances and assist. If a goalkeeper tried this there’s a name for it Route 1 football.
