The problem with tiki taka (and total football) is you need exceptional players to carry out this style of football, if you try it with average players it's a disaster
@Papery yeah you're right. Frenkie, De Ligt and Schone left the club. But even so they started very well. At one point though Neres, Ziyech, Promes, Blind and Veltman were all injuried. That's like 5 starting players, and club like Ajax doesn't have a strong enough bench to replace them

2008-2012 was an amazing time to be a Barca fan. I had been a fan since 2002 just before Ronaldinho was signed and it has been a pleasure to see the blaugrana ascend the way they did. What about the Wengerball from early 00 to mid and late 00, when it was at its scintillating best and effective in terms of beautiful football and winning a game? As I started watching football back then that was my first introduction to possession based football and when Barca blew up (even more so than before) under Pep I thought others were evolving it and doing it too!
As a Canadian growing up in the Toronto area, having Spanish origins, as I teenager I witnessed Spain winning the world cup in 2010 and Arsenal playing throughout the 2000s. Now at 26, I think back to what were my big influences in football and it was indeed playing a lot of futsal as an adolescent and watching Cesc Fabregas at Arsenal and the Spanish national team. It's amazing how that style of play just transfixed me when I was younger... The sheer amount of passes done beautifully leading to a goal. Then it was players like Cazorla (who would forget that performance against Man. City) that captivated me. It's funny to think now about the Arsenal midfield with the likes of Özil, who indeed carried on that style of play somewhat, though I'm trying to pinpoint a particular moment when Arsenal stopped that playing of football.. It think it was quite late in Wenger career there when they started switching to a 4-2-3-1 that a lot of that was lost, with players like Xhaka, Elneny. I mean, Arsenal had Flamini to use as a defensive mid, but perhaps as their defence issues got worse since the 2010s, then the midfield started looking more defensive? What do people think?
Indeed Wenger was a pioneer of the passing game within England. I think formation and personnel prevented it from becoming full blown tiki-taka/Cruyff ball in the early 2000s. The Nasri/Fabregas/Wilshere days were a closer match and culminated in that famous victory over Barcelona. Perhaps ultimately what led to that later version not sweeping trophies was the lack of gamechangers as well as a lack of insistence on pressing

So yes, statistically there's a 19/20 chance he's more successful than anyone you come across in TH-cam. What was the point of your comment?
The C in “tocando” should be pronounced as a k. And there is no exact translation given that tiki-taka is an invented word that resembles quick passing between players. i.e. Xavi to Iniesta (thats the tiki) immediately followed by an Iniesta to Messi pass (thats the taka) so on and so forth. Its kind of like an onomatopoeia where tiki and taka resemble the sound of quick passes. Therefore, a more accurate translation would be “we are passing the ball in quick succession”
POintless POints what is it then? Andres Montes (caster) created the phrase and used it when the team had an outstanding possession of the ball and were passing it very quickly. I’m a native spanish speaker btw
When talking about well known teams inspired by tiki-taka I think you should also mention the german national squad around the time they won the world cup up until the world cup in russia. They might have played the style to the extreme as spain or barca did but they too had a strong focus on possession based football.
I heard of tiki-taka before as something related to a lot of pass but tifo made it very clear to me what it actually is which I may not understand even after reading a site for an hour. I never had this kind of coherent understanding of it's origin, strength and weakness. To be able to make it easy to understand for less intelligent person like myself is what I like about Tifo.
great video, and thanks for the insight. i didn’t quite understand positional play until i watched this video, so credits for throwing info about that in as well. stay safe and keep up the good work guys :D
Tifo, love your videos because of the amount of effort put into investigating topics, which leads to rarely making mistakes. Tiki-taka is a slang in the Spanish speaking world which means that something is working flawlessly. When Clemente said that the selección was playing tiki-taka, he meant that they were playing good. Passing, movement and possession oriented football in Spanish is called “fútbol del toque”, which its literal translation would be “touchy football”. Keep up the great work! Love ya
indonesian national team were able to implement Tiki-Taka under Spanish Coach who is also both former Barcelona and Real Madrid player, Luis Milla Aspas. tiki taka was a suitable strategy for us since Indonesians player have height less than average 175 cm. we could master it in 18 months. as a result we were able to win several friendlies against weaker countries, also can cope with our nemesis Thailand and bigger countries such as Japan, South Korea and iceland (but Still Lose from them though.....) but our lousy and corrupt football association fired him with no logical reasons. hopefully he will back managing us someday.
Tiki Taka is a misconception. The concept is ''ElJuegoDePosicion'' that means positional football. 'Tiki Taka' as a phrase evolved when quick one touch passes interchange was observed by distant viewer who couldn't see purpose behind that which was to create overloads in some areas pf pitch or to utilize spaces arounds. ''You pass the ball, you attract opponents if you are press - resistant and technical enough you can disrupt their shape and structure and mobilize the space left behind and optimize the pitch either by expanding it to our benifit by quick passes or dribble during attack. '' -Xavi, 2017 interview ''I hate Tiki-Taka it's passing ba without aim, we don't play that way'' -Pep Guardiola
So what. All he's saying is that people that think it's just 121s are wrong. We know that. This video says that. If you understand the term properly like this video then it has meaning.
100% the term was coined by Johan Cruyff. In the Netherlands they have been using the term tiktak football WAY before i first heard it to describe Barcelona’s style.
This tiki taka revolution of football was the most revolutionary in history and the most efficient and successful of all eras From internationalational level to club level it culminated in 2 back to back euros, a WORLD CUP, multiple UCL's and Spanish league titles. It changed football forever. Ever since then teams try and play possession football and pressure play but not as successful as that era.
Key word here is movement. That became clear after the 2012 spanish win in the Europa cup. Tiki-taka became stagnant when there was no movement between players, it was almost painful to watch as a spanish suporter those games where youncpuld clearly see that the team amd the team playstile were declining.
You have forgot the first coach who played his team like that.... before Guardiola, he was the first of seeing the potential of those Spanish players....LUIS ARAGONES
Loving the content but an interesting angle that would have been great to put in is that the tiki taka style originally was developed by Arthur Rowe in 1949 while he was manager of Tottenham. Rowe taught this style to Vic Buckingham who became Ajax manager and led them to an Eredivisie title in his first season - thus influencing the new Total Football style which Burnley also were successful with in the 1950s - again largely down to the teachings of Arthur Rowe
Excellent explanation. Remember that the origins of the phrase by the famous Spanish commentator refers to a waiter with a tray full of tapas serving and offering them in all directions to the customers in a terrace bar
All you need to do to beat tiki taka is be clinical in a counter attack. Ukraine did this to Spain one game. Spain had 90% possession and over 300 passes but Ukraine only needed 15 Seconds on the counter attack- just 3 passes between 3 players down the field to score the only goal of the game. After the goal Spain played more reserved.
Tiki-Taka was beautiful to watch, even to this day, when you watch the highlights on TH-cam .... HOWEVER, if you were the opponent whom they were using it against, you almost wanted to break their legs. 😁 PS: Ronaldinho made it more entertaining to watch, and after he left, it became very monotonous.
I always feel Tiki-Taka is just the style that Xavi played as a midfielder. After he left Barca, they just don't play the same style anymore. Even though Iniesta and Messi were still on the team, it was very different from when Xavi was around.
@@autonaut279 hell nah. But tiki taka was really boring if we're being honest. You had to be doing something while watching the match like be on Facebook or some shit. Otherwise you'll only be falling asleep and wake up only when you hear "gol gol gol gol gol gol gol gol."
I love it. It's an art for me. I don't like the direct style's or soaking up pressure to hit on break... Spanish, Scottish, dutch style has strategy to it and a goal in mind. When it's coached well it's a thing of beauty but so few can coach it and very few players can perfect it
The video should also have talked about how managers were able to eventually counter this. Tiki taka has also had influence on the way players are conditioned. Like the Mourinho's beasts that were very quick and phyisical to press these players.
Am I the only one who likes the creative Italian 2006 football with strong defense,Balanced midfield and devastating forwards?Tiki taka can be destroyed by parking the bus or extremely physical football,Jose did it,he won la liga against the best Barca of 21st century.
Fernando Torres and David Villa weren't false 9s at all, and were crucial to Spain's success. In fact, at their peak they played together for Spain. The false 9 became later when Spain lacked such good forwards as those two.
I don’t don’t Barca creates the tiki taka but they definitely adapted and grew it but guys iam a 17 yr/o semi pro baller who post his journey would love if you could check it out and give me feedback 🙌
Barcelona doesn't Play Tiki Taka. It's called Jugo De Posición (Positional play). It's quite different from Tiki Taka as it emphasis on position and space rather than just passing the ball. No of passes doesn't matter but the right movements and the occupying the right spaces matters.
This video ignores how Luis Aragonés, who was the coach in 2006 and 2008 for Spain, incorporated the tiki-taka idea into Spain's play. He also noticed his players were not the tallest or most physical.
Its really sad that arsenal was never mentioned in the video specially when they were the team known to play the best tiki taka football of england and often compared with Barcelona. Shame on tifo football👎
Who is here again after Pep's City masterclass at the Etihad against Madrid. Pep's ability to replicate this style of play at city shows how big of a genius he is.

@@JDVRadio I'm curious to hear how they do in the coming years because they've certainly morphed under Arteta but how will that form ultimately manifest?
@@jamesportoraro8248 what Arteta is is a good coach. What Arsenal lack is good personnel. I think if they can keep Martinelli and blood a few more of the youngsters they can definitely be a top 4 team. If they can then go big in the transfer market nothing can stop them from challenging for the title
@@JDVRadio I agree Arteta is a good coach, I am really quite happy with him being there; thought my point is that it will take a season or two to get Arsenal to where he wants. I
I think it could not be explained better. You British people set the basic rules for the global practice of football, among other things, and today you continue to contribute decisively to its theoretical and practical development among all of us who love this sport. Thank you very much from Spain.
1:44 that’s not the Catalan flag (Senyera). That’s the independence Catalan flag (Estelada). The difference is that the Catalan flag is only red and yellow and the independent one has a blue triangle and a white 5 point star that was taken as inspiration from the cuban flag.

@Derry Douglas In terms of income (what I assume you're basing 'success' on) he will achieve more success than over 95% of the worlds population will in their lifetimes. So yes, statistically there's a 19/20 chance he's more successful than anyone you come across in TH-cam.
What was the point of your comment?
Sorry, it's even more than 19/20 considering a large portion of the world doesn't have access to internet / TH-cam, my mistake on the oversight.
@King Rohit Cheers Rohit, guy gave a smartass comment so I gave one right back 😂
The C in “tocando” should be pronounced as a k.
Lol, no that's not it
POintless POints what is it then? Andres Montes (caster) created the phrase and used it when the team had an outstanding possession of the ball and were passing it very quickly. I’m a native spanish speaker btw
Liverpool and Nottingham Forest played a brand of Football which consisted on passing back in the 70's and 80's. Both conquered Europe.
When talking about well known teams inspired by tiki-taka I think you should also mention the german national squad around the time they won the world cup up until the world cup in russia. They might have played the style to the extreme as spain or barca did but they too had a strong focus on possession based football.
not really. there was some influence but not really the same
I heard of tiki-taka before as something related to a lot of pass but tifo made it very clear to me what it actually is which I may not understand even after reading a site for an hour. I never had this kind of coherent understanding of it's origin, strength and weakness. To be able to make it easy to understand for less intelligent person like myself is what I like about Tifo.
1:46 OMG Thats not the catalan flag! You put the estelada. The independent one.
Sentence: estamos tocando tiki taka
Narrator: estamos tossandos tiki taka
Me: why did you...?!
One of my favourite things is hearing how Anglos discover new ways to butcher Spanish 🤣
Sucio honestly I can’t apologise enough but to be honest we butcher ALL languages 😂
For anyone wondering, it should’ve been something like Estamos to/k/ando tiki taka
@@testadalord01432 Lol no worries, man 😅
These guys are awful at pronunciation , god dammit
Just finished the podcast! Great work on both.
This whole channel is great for an American trying to the learn all the details about soccer/football.
great video, and thanks for the insight. i didn’t quite understand positional play until i watched this video, so credits for throwing info about that in as well. stay safe and keep up the good work guys :D
Love ya
A small thing!
Tocando in Spanish is not said 'Toss-ando'. The C before an A always has a 'K' sound, so it would be 'Tok-ando'
indonesian national team were able to implement Tiki-Taka under Spanish Coach who is also both former Barcelona and Real Madrid player, Luis Milla Aspas.
tiki taka was a suitable strategy for us since Indonesians player have height less than average 175 cm. we could master it in 18 months. as a result we were able to win several friendlies against weaker countries, also can cope with our nemesis Thailand and bigger countries such as Japan, South Korea and iceland (but Still Lose from them though.....)
but our lousy and corrupt football association fired him with no logical reasons.
hopefully he will back managing us someday.
Tiki Taka is a misconception.
The concept is ''ElJuegoDePosicion''
that means positional football.
'' -Xavi, 2017 interview
''I hate Tiki-Taka it's passing ba without aim, we don't play that way''
-Pep Guardiola
That quote made xavi and iniesta sound like some hypnotized robot or something xD
Typooo _ Accurate 👏
They instilled those methods since kids at la masia
Man I love these videos. So well done. As always. This channel is so underrated.
Why are there Union berlin fans at 6:29?
This tiki taka revolution of football was the most revolutionary in history and the most efficient and successful of all eras
From internationalational level to club level it culminated in 2 back to back euros, a WORLD CUP, multiple UCL's and Spanish league titles.
It changed football forever. Ever since then teams try and play possession football and pressure play but not as successful as that era.
That is not Catalonia's flag, but Catalan pro-independence's flag.
Correct. That's not Catalonia flag. Greetings from Barcelona.
Sad almost no video about tiki taka talks about Busquets... That man is tiki taka personified. So underrated!
So great to finally see this channel receive the attention it deserves
These videos immensely help my coaching and overall soccer enjoyment. Thank you so much!
soccer.....You are still way behind
Key word here is movement. That became clear after the 2012 spanish win in the Europa cup. Tiki-taka became stagnant when there was no movement between players, it was almost painful to watch as a spanish suporter those games where youncpuld clearly see that the team amd the team playstile were declining.
You have forgot the first coach who played his team like that.... before Guardiola, he was the first of seeing the potential of those Spanish players....LUIS ARAGONES
Please make a video on Sarriball and why it made Sarri's Chelsea one of the most feared sides during his tenure.
That Pep illustration at first looked like a distant child of Cantona.
For that you have won a kung fu kick by legend himself
Loving the content but an interesting angle that would have been great to put in is that the tiki taka style originally was developed by Arthur Rowe in 1949 while he was manager of Tottenham. Rowe taught this style to Vic Buckingham who became Ajax manager and led them to an Eredivisie title in his first season - thus influencing the new Total Football style which Burnley also were successful with in the 1950s - again largely down to the teachings of Arthur Rowe
Guardiola how many passes do you need?
Guardiola: Yes
wathcing your video is like having a meditation, or therapy. amazing music, amazing story and insight
Owen coyle transformed my local club in a year great coach
Chennayian Fc😅😅
Great work in half a season
Yup
Excellent explanation. Remember that the origins of the phrase by the famous Spanish commentator refers to a waiter with a tray full of tapas serving and offering them in all directions to the customers in a terrace bar
Best football ever. Freedom for Catalan repúblic!!
5:58 thats a nice tattoo Messi has
🤣🤣🤣
Portugal:pass to CR7
Spain: tiki-taka
Brasil: joga bonito
Argentina:messi will do all alone
Italy: defend till we die
German:attack till we die
*France : Africa United
argentina : doing whatever to win
Uruguay : do most fouls
England : its coming home
Portugal shouldn't even be here LMAO
Tiki-Taka was beautiful to watch, even to this day, when you watch the highlights on TH-cam .... HOWEVER, if you were the opponent whom they were using it against, you almost wanted to break their legs. 😁
PS: Ronaldinho made it more entertaining to watch, and after he left, it became very monotonous.
Im sure that at 1:23 every spanish who is watching this read that with Andres Montes' voice. One of the best commentators ever
Who’s here after Spain lost to Morocco after 80% possession lmaoooo
I always feel Tiki-Taka is just the style that Xavi played as a midfielder. After he left Barca, they just don't play the same style anymore. Even though Iniesta and Messi were still on the team, it was very different from when Xavi was around.
"estamos toh-KHAN-doh..."
not "estamos "to-zan-doh..."
A little spanish goes a long way:)
This is the most beautiful form of football
Tiki-taka, the only style of football that makes you fall asleep during every match.
I bet you love the Fast & Furious franchise
Mourihno beaten pep 7 times in 25 and drew 6 times
Hardly a stopped
1:18 absolutely butchered it. Pronounce “Tokandoe”
Am I the only one who likes the creative Italian 2006 football with strong defense,Balanced midfield and devastating forwards?Tiki taka can be destroyed by parking the bus or extremely physical football,Jose did it,he won la liga against the best Barca of 21st century.
You sir, are not alone!
Do a video showing how Real Madrid's Mourinho beated the tiki taka system.
Super. Tifo Football's the ultimate football encyclopedia.
Pep hates the term though. He hates when his teams are labeled as playing tiki-take.
Because he thinks people see tiki taka as just fast passes. When there's a system and strategy put in place
Such a nice TH-cam channel
Video idea: most expensive XI and why they were expensive (player's quality).
This episode by tifo football is masterclass
wow i’m here so early
Noel Bravo facts same , you should be early on my channel too wink wink
So helpful! Clear and concise.
Tiki Taka is passing for the sake of it. Pep Guardiola hates the word
It's actually positional play that's why he hates that
This Channel is underrated, TBH
tiki-taka❌
JUEGO DE POSICION✔️
*BRILLIANT!* _NO ONE ELSE_ even comes close to producing football-related content as good as _Tifo_ do. Thank you guys! ❤️💯👍🏻
Pass your girl like tiki taka that’s why they call us M S N
💀
Bayern 7-0 Barca.
End of Tiki-Taka
I can not even begin to explain how wrong and unfunny you are, so I agree with you.
Or Italy v. Spain in Euro 2016 Round of 16
Direct counter attack
Pep Guardiola's Bayern 0-4 Real Madrid
Yeah, the next year Bayern hired Guardiola as manager....
You guys at Tifo should definitely do a video about the modern football counters for Tiki-Taka!
Tiki taka was first introduced on The Athletic
I have actually been waiting for this for too long
Its really sad that arsenal was never mentioned in the video specially when they were the team known to play the best tiki taka football of england and often compared with Barcelona. Shame on tifo football👎
5:27 and Owen Coyle wins the ISL against all odds 2022. What a manager..
*cough Positional Play *cough El Juego De Posicion *cough
Please cover your mouth sir.
Toxic
Who is here again after Pep's City masterclass at the Etihad against Madrid. Pep's ability to replicate this style of play at city shows how big of a genius he is.
Last time I was this early tiki-taka was an insult.
Love this TH-cam page!
