    I believe the monster parts are usually used for the quenching oil, especially since I'm the master armorer quest you get archgriffen acid and yoana mentions she needs it for the quench. But maybe that's a stretch.

      I actually think this might be the reason. I hadn't considered that before but I think it makes sense from a fantasy crafting perspective. Idk how useful acid would be IRL but with magic materials and such, I buy it.

      In real life all of the minerals mentioned in the book are just different states of iron ore, and the archgriffin acid would be used in the tanning of hides or in that mission's case the lining of the plated armour she was making.
      The idea if having all of these monsters and their unique characteristics would open a whole new scientific question, could making armour or weaponry using any of them make them superior to what we have?
      Also I'm really looking forward to the day that game designers realise that you don't heat and pound a fully formed, edged, fullered and even hilted, pommelled and peaned sword...poor Hatori the greatest Smith in Novigrad looks a right moron doing it

    • @derskalde4973

      This actually could work.
      Quenching effects the material.
      You can just quench the hot metal in water, but while this hardens steel, other metals, like silver, it has the opposite effect of softening the material.
      And if I understand it right, quenching in oil is good, because it doesn't "shock" the blades temperature down that quickly, and instead lets it cool more gently, while quenching in saltwater results in making the steel extra hard, if I remember correctly.
      Quenching in acid would likely affect the metal, though the exact effect would depend on the type of acid used (and since we don't have really any knowledge of what archgriffin acid is or its components or its effects, that is kinda hard to guess). I think, I even heard once of this method before...
      It'd still be very dangerous though. At least the acid I used to work with, which was thinned down, I recall, we were advised to first cool the metal before placing it in the acid to clean, because the acid was very reaction-happy and would bubble and spit quite a bit if hot metal was placed in it, which obviously could be very dangerous.

    In the Magnus Chase: sword of summer book one of the characters explains that some magical swords use the bone of some monsters so that the weapon is extra effective to said creature. That could be a way to explain how as you upgrade your witcher swords, you require more monster body parts.

    • @decimation9780
      @decimation9780 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes and no. See that explanation is based upon what the Viking people believed, as their weapons and armour were more effective when they were made with the bones of their ancestors or enemies. In reality, it was because they ended up making a form of rudimentary steel known as Bone Steel, which was superior to the iron weapons and armour wielded by most of their enemies. This can also be applied to The Witcher 3, and the crafting system used to improve and create certain weapons and armour pieces, except in this case it’s exactly what happens, though the weaponry and armour is more effective as a whole, rather than being effective solely against humans or solely against drowners, etc etc.

    What would be the difference between a silver coated "steel" sword VS a sword forged from an alloy that mixes both into 1 metal?

    • @Laranarutolover
      @Laranarutolover 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I couldn't find any information on steel and silver alloys but I know that if you simply coat a steel sword with silver, the sword will still have the strength of steel with just an outer layer of silver making it just as strong as a steel sword but prone to chipping. The silver would have to be reapplied on a regular basis.

    • @driftingdruid
      @driftingdruid 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      we already wear silver alloys for jewelry, called sterling silver. maybe having a sword as an alloy of silver is still somehow damaging to monsters, while making the sword itself more resilient to wear and damage from its use in combat?

    • @kristoferprovencal3608
      @kristoferprovencal3608 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The problem is that mixing them together would make the sword like sterling silver, it would be too soft for combat

    • @sinarouhi3966
      @sinarouhi3966 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well in metallurgy and chemistry you learn about "mixing" metals. One thing is you can't just easily mix every metal with another as ghey have different specifications, like in which degree they melt. So there is that and then simply mixing metal and silver would maybe make the sword even less resistant as it would break due to not being pure. So basically you would silver coat the steel, the silver will wear off but the sword won't break.

    • @Quicksilver_Cookie
      @Quicksilver_Cookie หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Reason why we don't know for sure is because alloying iron and silver is simply a silly idea. Nothing that's made of silver really requires a ton of structural strength, and iron alloys are not worth wasting precious metals on. It's really that simple. That's why there's nothing on iron-silver alloys. We simply don't have a need for it. How it works in a fantasy world is another matter. In this context silver may not even be literal. It could simply be a reference to popular folklore fact that silver hurts vampires. It may just be another steel sword, made slightly differently to a "normal" steel sword and not actually containing any silver in it. Also, there's an actual alloy called nickel silver for example, and it contains exactly zero silver in it.

    As to alchemy, I believe monster parts are used to craft certain things because they'd have a chemical effect which would be beneficial. For instance, you get acid from Drowners, which makes sense since they are semi-aquatic creatures, as well as being immune to poisons. Certain acids can be used to treat metals in a process called pickling. You'd want to do this because pickling removes impurities in metals, thus it can be theorized that Drowner acid, ie Ginatz's acid, would have a similar effect if used in the process of forging a weapon, like a sword. Then you have creatures like the Fiend, which offer a bounty of chemical resources. The dung that can be found, or scraped off their corpse, is useful since it contains methane. This dung can be used to power kilns, which would be useful for smithing, or steam technology (which has more potential usage in the world of the Witcher). The bones contain calcium, which can be a bonding agent, useful for strengthening weapons, or used to remove impurities in lead. And the Fiend third eye likely has powerful chemicals in it which help process it's neural functions. These are some reasons why monster parts are likely used for smithing in the Witcher world.

    Examples
    drowner tongs in the coals may add a bleeding effect to the blade
    and quenching in monster saliva might course the blade to temper better making the silver more viable for fighting/durable

    I honestly ALWAYS thought that Witchers should've had an iron sword instead of a silver sword for dealing with elemental or fae creatures like in folklore mythology rather than just using silver for everything that is a "monster", and possibly could use a steel sword instead as an alternative to the iron swords to make it easier dealing with humanoid enemies but much much less effective against elemental or fae creatures.

    WitcherGeorge I would recommend also having a look at the rpg there wich has some explainations for some of the stuff you left open in this video. according to that parts of monsters are needed as a sort of catalyst for certain kind of magic energy to make the sword work, also it says that the metorite/Magnetite in the steel sword is although rarely sometimes needed too as appearently there are rare monsters vulnerable to that material instead of SIlver. About what includes the crafting of those and why you need plans for it, it is explained that since witcher swords and other witcher gear were more a less a tradesecret of the witcher schools, wich by now all are closed/fallen as far as anyone knows there are very few outside the wandering witchers who ever knew how to create those and I Assume it is similar for the runes. Still it can be said that not each witcher has to be a blacksmith and thusly when he needs to repair / build a new sword he might have to give the instructions to the Craftsman unless he by some coincedence already knows, for example by getting a hand on those diagrams wich maybe got looted from a witcher school.

And also, silver swords are literally only for magical beasts, because if it has flesh and blood it can be cut just like any with a good "steel" sword. If runes are placed in the blade itself, wouldn't it have the same effect when these runes are inlaid with silver?
    That way, you would have the silver on the blade, it would probably be more permanent than a silver plating/coating, you use what already is there anyway, and it'd be a nice color contrast between the "white" of the silver and the "grey" of the steel.

    When playing the Witcher games I treat Silver the same way Mando from the mandalorian tv show treats beskar. Getting my hands as much as I can find never selling it if it’s dust ore or ingots silver to me silver for a Witcher is a necessity.

    I wouldn't read much into the diagrams and crafting systems in the games. You need diagrams to have any weapon or armor made even the most common that's used by bandits, that says diagrams are a way of metering out the ability to craft new gear over time. Then being a diagram it would be a list of materials and a drawing with dimensions the smith would follow. Smith level to craft the best gear is easily explained by better craftsman gets better quality. In the case of swords and armor quality is very important, you want the highest because your life depends on it. Bad quality on a sword... poor heat treatment means the blade wont hold an edge very well and not cut as good after just one cut. Poor blade geometry could make it feel clunky and harder to handle because of a lack of distal taper, and could be terrible at cutting because of the edge geometry. The higher the quality the better those are which says more damage that can be done.

    You might add the precise measurements of the swords as well. Plenty of people keep insisting the one and a half hand sword cannot be drawn from the back sheath. Well DUH.
    Geralts swords are one handed, quite short and have long handle.

    You said somthing about of the book swords and game and i want to say that the silver or steel sword are just like eachother(book and game) becuse if you want to kill a Monster in Witcher 3 you can Use steel thats right dosent have so much damage but it can we could do the same in 2 and 1 (Witcher)

    I have a question, is possible that Meve stayed with her crown after Nilfgaard conquest of Lyria and Rivia? The end of the game Thronebreaker says that she still reigned for many years, but the time between the Second and Third northern war is just four years. And if she was like, in a rebel organization inside Lyria and Rivia, I don't think Anseis would be received in Toussaint like a prince how he was. And considering that Nilfgaard let some rulers mantain theirs titles as vassal estates, like Metinna, Toussaint, Cintra, Vicovare, Attre and maybe Temeria, I think is possible from Nilfgaard view, but I don't imagine the White Queen accepting it. (Sorry for my english, I'm not a native speaker)

    Personally I think that if a new Witcher game was in development it would not include Geralt cause his story is over by the end of blood and wine, maybe we’ll be able to create our own character in the next Witcher.

    I don't think these swords actually contain silver. At least they're not made of silver. It's probably just a reference to folklore, like silver being able to hurt vampires. Somewhere during long history of witcher schools they just started to call their dedicated monster sword - silver. Even though it's just another iron alloy sword, maybe made somewhat differently than your average run of the mill sword. Also, helps maintain the mystique about witchers among normal people. It's a marketing term, if you wish.

      Generally speaking monsters that can be dealt with massed arrow fire are stuff local militia and lords should be able to handle themselves, so relying on such a tool might not be wise in regards to making money as archers are relatively cheap compared to witchers.

    Wrong information mate. Geralt says people say the steel is for humans in spite as there are monsters that can also be called by a steel sword. Nowhere in any Witcher codex does it say a Witcher goes on the path with a steel sword to kill humans and none humans. Geralt and Witcher George himself would be pretty pissed off with you dude 🤣

    • @OminousKnightXIX
      @OminousKnightXIX 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're missing the point; people can be just as deadly as monsters and that still doesn't detract that the SILVER sword is mainly used for monsters. Your interpretation is your own but don't be calling out George on your misinterpretation on the lore.
