    I didn't mention two witchers, Brehen present in the Season of Storms Witcher Book and Kiyan the cat school witcher (although he was barely a witcher when we find him). Sorry about that it's the nature of less scripted content to miss very small details, although even naming all of the witchers isn't really necessary for the purpose of the video.

      Just bought the books excited to start reading them!! But I've heard conflicting opinions on the order of reading them. Does it not matter for some or is it like Star Wars with a release order, chronological order and machette order?

      Villager: Something I’ve always wondered...
      What’ll you Witcher’s do once there’s no basilisks, leshens or giants around, eh?”
      The Witcher: Well, that’s a fine question, my good man. Now here’s the answer - as I see it...
      The world will always have a great need for very strong and highly capable men. And Witcher’s are such men...
      Witcher’s are the best monster slayers, man slayers and curse-breakers on the entire planet! 🌍 That they inhabit...
      A Witcher will always be able to find good, honest paying work or otherwise.
      Just look at what Letho alone was able to accomplish as an assassin.
      Or how Geralt defeated the very King of the Wild Hunt in single combat!
      Witcher’s can thrive as:
      1. Bodyguards or Assassins.
      2. Pirates or Bandits.
      3. Super Soldiers or Super Spies.
      4. Patrons or Kings!
      Witchers can live for centuries. Where as humans only live for a few decades!
      Which gives Witcher’s far more than enough time and head start on procuring great wealth, power and status.
      The life of the Witcher’s as told by the author of the books. And the makers of the video games.
      Is such absolute bullish!t!

      @@oliviadoyle3623 It's like Bones said. Those first two books are short stories mostly unrelated to the saga but often mentioned. I highly recommend starting with them because they set up characters, their relations and some of those stories are important because they describe crucial elements for future development, for example how Ciri's parents got together and her destiny linked to Geralt's.

      @DaroriDerEinzige 3 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      It's also a different story to kill a Monster than a Witcher.
      While Witcher are highly skilled, especially obviously in forms of fighting which are usefull against Monsters (No shields, no formation, ... etc., focused on Speed and Agility) they seem to don't really have a "Military Drill" to it. Futhermore, they "sworn" to protect "Peasants". Futhermore, they are tangible - Not like a Ghost or so.
      In the Books and also on higher difficulty in Witcher 3, you actually need time as a Witcher for preperations and stuff. You don't just jump into a Monster hideout and say: Well, what do we have here? *looking in the inventory for the right Absurds and Oils to put on*
      While a Leshy can easily avoid Peasants and pick them out one by one - A Witcher, if he knows what about he's against, know how to counter those effects and skills ofa Leshy.
      They are basically Specialists - and Geralt (As main character) has anyway a big Plus.

  • @wafflingmean4477
    @wafflingmean4477 4 ปีที่แล้ว +330

    Something important to note is that during the games (at least 2 and 3 I'm still playing through 1) there are major conflicts surrounding the regions Geralt travels through. War creates battles, battles create corspes, corpses draw monsters. They also destabilise regions allowing monsters that would normally be afraid of humans to attack them, with peasants and soldiers not rallying to defend themselves, especially so because soldiers are not protecting normal regions or culling monster populations. Also in the case of the Witcher 3, he journeys to Skellige, where witchers and locals have struggled to cull monsters given so many of them live underwater.
    So the games specifically draw us to settings where witchers are needed more than usual.

    • @whitegluestick6039

    Also making a witcher is extremely costly. Only the trial of the grasses requires rare alchemical ingredients such as an albino bruxa tongue and a manticore poison gland. Now I've never seen an albino bruxa before and manticores are abysmally rare and almost impossible to kill.
    As for the choice you still require several mutagenic, toxic plants and fungi, which are also probably rare.
    And the trial of the dreams which I suspect is done via magic/sorcery rather than mutagens, but if that is the case then i doubt there are even any sorcerers that still know how to preform the trial.

    Triss' internal monologs in Blood of Elves explain that the witchers of the wolf school still know how to prepare the mutations but you need a mage to administer them, or a sorceress if you're lucky, so they don't know what to do from that point on. it could be that the males who knew or studied specifically that were all killed during the keep attack, in TW3 the wolf school diagrams are kept by one male who teleported away from the keep but died cuz he was impaled or something idk but he didn't make it far even tho he was the only one to escape

    At the end of Witcher 3 we see that when Ciri activates the mega portal. A bunch of monsters starts spawning on Undvik. And if you have the ciri wither ending you come to Vizima and witness many broken windows in the palace. Suggesting that her opening the portal made monsters spawn everywhere in the world. Just like in the explanation of witcher 3 prologues. 2 worlds went by each other and that's what gave birth to magic and monsters.
    Next Witcher game isn't going to be about Geralt, as far as I know. But it would be cool if the story was bout "The Last Witcher" and how he travels in search of the lost art of witcher making. I already thought of 3 endings for the thing. 1: The witcher dies. And the world is plunged into darkness. 2: The world learns how to deal with monsters. And so it doesn't need a witcher. The witcher dies peacefully in his bed. 3: The world is plunged into darkness. The witchers are reborn as a profession. And the cycle begins anew.

    I really felt there was a missed opportunity at the end of Wild Hunt to have a 3rd Conjunction (or a 2nd, not sure what the video game timeline was) of the Spheres actually occur, as opposed to just a brief local phenomenon. I felt that would have set up a 4th game perfectly (even if it didnt star Geralt as they have said). All of a sudden the world is flooded with new and dangerous monsters, humanitys dominion is vulnerable and threatened and they once again find themselves in need of witchers. However the witchers are all but extinct, their schools destroyed, and their secrets lost. Perhaps you could play a witcher who is struggling to found a new school and uncover the secrets of the past, or witcher who has newly undergone the mutations at this fledgling school. Something like that. But too bad they just hand waved it away saying "oh there might be a couple new giants on Undvick, no biggie."

The trails of the grasses was mentioned a few times so that wasnt forgotten at all. As the guys who through such a thing, I highly doubt they will easily forget their experience. Can also explain why Leo isn't a full fledged witcher because he didn't go through the entire process. We all know there multiple trials needed to create a full witcher. Thanks Witcher George for the great content! Right on, following the narrativ of the movie “nightmare of the wolf” which I found inspiring as well, Khaer Morhe was attacked by a mob of mages, humans and monsters, all part of a political vendetta against the Witcher. On the other hand the Witchers were bringing new monsters in order for them to have more Contracts. Again the gray areas are beautifully filled in that narrative and I love where it goes.
    On the other side, I remember a mission in Witcher 2 where Khaer Morhen gets attacked by bandits as well. So there are multiple Lore events taking place that could have potentially led to the downfall of the Witchers.
    Regarding the mutations, we learn something new in the Witcher Season 2 where we find out that knowledge aswell as resources to craft mutations where gone.
    In the game on the other hand, I remember Gerald learns how to craft mutations, so he could start his own school….
    Interesting paths, which one do you prefer/see legit?

    What helps in the demise of a witcher is being a witcher. I mean the line “a witcher never dies in his bed”. It’s no exaggeration. Once you become a witcher you’re destined for death. Walking the path is the path of monster extermination. But at what cost? Slaying for a fee, moving from place to place, you’re bound to become a target. Whether from the lowest peasant to the greediest of Kings or a monster contract gone wrong. It’s a life of death. And once the monsters are all gone, what would the humans turn to kill? Non humans and each other which was already a thing before witcher 3 and more prevalent in 3. A witcher may be this somewhat superhuman but in my eyes no stronger than 5 men. Eventually every witcher meets his end one way or another.

Also the process is pretty much terrifying not only for the children going through it, but also for witchers implementing the trial of the grasses. Noticeable by Vesemir in the witcher 3 while they try getting Avalach back.

    You forgot to mention that a lot of monsters have no ill intentions. This would also illicit some people to brand witchers as nothing more than killers. Some examples :
    -Dopplers are almost gentle souls, probably to counterbalance the fact they'd all easily make efficient assassins. Course humans rarely realize this.
    -Trolls are generally pretty passive. In Skellige their fisticuffs champion is a troll. I would imagine a Witcher killing it would mar their reputation.
    -Succubi can often sway humans to their side, via magic or not. One of them met in-game is careful not to "drain" her "victims" to death, who probably appreciate her.
    -Vampires, specifically higher vampires. Their skills gained from their extended lifetimes can greatly benefit humanity. Like humans, some are evil, others not!
    -Dragons, whom are sentient and may be benevolent. Other draconids may also be sacred to druids, as they've basically the mentality of wild beasts; not evil.
    -Godlings are friendly but shy and help out those who live near them. They only ask for food, tools and respect in return. They look like kids, so would probably be considered by humans as children.
    So yeah, not all monsters are evil. Some are neutral (wild) or even good towards humans. It takes a witcher with a strong moral compass to hunt them without qualms, so I'm sure many innocents were sadly dispatched, marking the witchers for vengeance by some party.

    The Trial of Grasses at least in the game is explained that it's in 2 parts: the first part is what we do to Uma- making the body susceptible for all of the witcher mutations; the second part is giving/ adding witcher mutations. Sure you could say that they red conned that the secrets of how to make witchers were gone by doing the first part in The Witcher 3, but I would argue the more important part is the second part. In Blood and Wine DLC there is a quest "Turn and Face the Strange" where Geralt learns that Moreau wanted to reverse the witcher mutations and he was making progress in reversing mutations (that he had given to them) in humans (test subjects, not 100% sure they were human), but when he tried that on his son (who was a witcher) it didn't work and he enhanced his mutations even more. So this means the mutations that witcher receive are more special than they appear. And maybe that knowledge is lost.

    OK so we know that at one point the school of the wolf had somewhere around 40-60 active witchers before the peasant attack on kaer morhen and approximately 5-10 after. If we take that as a guess for the other schools past and present numbers that means that there are currently probably less then 60 witchers still alive. Let's be generous and double that to account for schools we may not even know about yet, so probably around 100-120. With most of, if not all, witcher keeps we know of either destroyed or abandoned that's very little to work with to even restart any of the schools. But that's not even considering the point of lost knowledge, equipment and there probably not being alot of sorcerers/sorceresses willing to help in the rebuilding process. The only way I could see it working under these circumstances is to create one unified witcher order where the training would function more like in star wars,as in every boy ( or potentially girl) learns all the basics, then they undergo the witcher trials and pick a school. They would then go out as a student to an elder witcher from that school to acompany them and learn that schools specifics for some time befor returning to the order to then go out on the path. Once they return they would then get there own student or start working as an instructor.

The only problem would be people willing to hire them for these jobs

    I do believe there are several mentions throughout the games referring to Witchers as a dying breed.
    Considering how mages & witches are forced into hiding, witcher bases disappearing it's probably harder to do everything to train new ones.
    Considering how a decent proportion of witchers die during the actual trials & training, that makes them even rarer.
    Considering how the actually complete witchers can die during battle, old age, betrayal etc.
    Considering how actually getting orphans to train to become witchers are getting harder.
    Considering how if there are actual monsters that need witchers to be dealt with, which can't be solved by throwing troops at them, they probably just avoid those places if possible.
    Basically, witchers are a miniscule proportion of a miniscule proportion of a miniscule... you get the idea. They're extremely rare, hard to replace, impossible to replace on a big scale and not as useful as they used to be, so there's not as many supporters wanting more witchers so that makes it even harder.

    Hey can you do an update in light of new info on the Manitcore, Viper, and Bear schools from the newer content in the Gwent game and the new Witcher game coming out

  • @henrywedekind5754

    For every the witcher fan here.
    I read somewhere that Lambert and eskel joined geralt at his vineyard and stayed there with him at the end of the game.

    would be cool if CDPR made a witcher spin off game like thronebreaker, where you play as a different character, probably a witcher from a different school but in the witcher 3 style.
    nice video.

      They usualy aim for the big progects and spinoff is unlikely I think.

      @@yourdad5799 well no because they've made gwent a standalone game and thronebreaker too, which isn't major.

    Nah - not gone, they are after all using the trial of the grasses to bring that elf back (and Yen makes sure he survives, so in theory if given access to sorceresses they could multiply the successful candidates IMHO)

  • @thebelgianlemon6815
    @thebelgianlemon6815 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I believe in The Witcher 1 the mage from the Salamandra stole the mutagens needed to complete the part of the trial of the grasses that commes after the potions. If they weren’t stolen during that attack then it was during a previous attack.

    Even if monsters go extinct, I don't think curses and ghosts will really disappear, and that's something a witcher can deal with

    • @yourdad5799
      @yourdad5799 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe. But this is not a solid sourse of income and I think not only witchers can lift curses. Mages can and they are not going anywhere, judging how Geralt is lifting more simple curses like the comon whaith. I think soneone can do it too.
