- Is the AMD Wraith Prism still worth it in 2020? This cooler has been sitting in a drawer for months. Figured it would be time to give it a test run. I ran some benchmarks to find just how well the cooler performs. I was certainly surprised by some of the results.

Nice video however you really didn't do a fair comparison. I have been building custom PCs now for 24 years both professionally and for my own use so I'd like to chime in.
You compared an OEM stock air cooler rocking a single 120MM fan with a $130 aftermarket closed-loop AIO liquid cooling system that has two 120mm fans to cool a radiator with a larger overall surface area. It's fairly common sense that the AIO was going to outperform the stock air cooler. I think what you missed was just how well the stock cooler matched up to the AIO!
The Cinabench scores were so close, it's really a wash. I'd have noted that Cinabench benchmark scores can easily drop if Windows is doing any background tasks (like downloading updates or simply reaching out to the Microsoft servers) so we should take those with a large grain of salt.
The temps in game under load were a difference of 1 degree C, and a 7 degree C temp difference of the VRM in the system stability test? That, to me, isn't worth $130 if I was simply replacing the Wraith Prism that came with my CPU, or if I was replacing the Wraith Spire on an AMD 5 Series and deciding between the Prism and the Kraken the $90 difference isn't worth it. Something as simple as having three 120mm fans blowing cool, outside air across the board will nullify that. I also found it amusing that people talk about fan 'noise' when most of the time they have headsets on, the sound cranked up and their cases have three 120mm fans on the front, a number of fans on their GPU and then their PSU fan and two AIO fans (or twin fans on their tower cooler).
I'm confused why you would recommend a tower cooler when you didn't do any comparison testing of any tower coolers (which would have been a more fair comparison, especially price-wise). You mention noise of this cooler but you recommended tower coolers with no mention of how loud they are, especially those which have dual fans. Your suggestions were also going off the assumption our cases have the clearance for a tower cooler.
I'd also point out, tower coolers look like anus and if someone was looking at a Wraith Prism, let's face it the Wraith Prism looks better than any of those. If we are upgrading from a Wraith Spire, chances are we want the AMD logo and the RGB (the Prism gives us the ability to separately change the logo, ring and fan LEDs so that's big if we are into case modding).
From my decades of experience, tower coolers have always been heavy things that move the center of gravity further away from your board, creating more physical load on the board. I have lost count of how many motherboards I've seen which have been damaged by a tower cooler.
We could get an AIO, but again we may not have a case we can mount the AIO radiator in or we may not want any liquid near our computers, we don't want to spend $130 or more on cooling our CPU when the gains are so tiny or we don't want to be spending $130 every 4 years to replace the AIO as they loose fluid (and that's common for AIOs)
The Kraken's pump is on radiator block which has always been a terrible design of AIOs. Pump failure is a common issue on this model. RGB connector is proprietary and you need their adapter to even be able to use it. A number of people have issues with the NZXT micro usb cable that plugs into a usb header on the motherboard and let's not get started on the NZXT Customer Service. AMD will happily, no-questions-asked, swap out a Wraith Prism if you have issues (I know as I've done this at my job multiple times).
I do like your video, don't get me wrong, but I disagree with the core message of the video.

and you will get more kills if you set it to red in exchange for heat

Got a 3700X that included the prism as an upgrade from a 1600 with a wraith spire. The 3700X works OK with the Spire but I'm going to try it with the prism as soon as I can find (or replace) those plastic clip mount things. The 3700X has a 65 watt TDP, no need to go crazy with cooling.
All I needed to know on the gaming side of things for my rx 5600x!
Now while I do agree with most of what you said. The Wraith Prism just looks gorgeous and for gaming loads it'll never run that hot/loud. It's a decent cooler if you're after the looks.
It really does look good. I have used it quite a bit since I made this video. It has grown on me quite a bit. More than enough for the 3700X
Remember that the Wraith was originally made for 125W CPUs so it's not just pretty. I also have the Prism and it's still essentially the same as the AM2/AM2+/AM3 stock coolers (I call them "Wraiths before they were called Wraiths") with an RGB ring.
I've used this type of cooler for 25 years with three different CPUs rated at 125W without issue. These coolers are amazing. They may not keep your CPU insanely cool but they will keep the temps WELL within spec, even during all-core load benchmarks. Your CPU will NEVER feel the need to throttle. What more can you ask for?

true, it is actually really good compares to its price( around 21$ currently), would like to upgrade to a x53 after i save up(cause it is around 7x-9x the price vs. prism in my area)
I am building a RYZEN 3600XT set up at the moment and I bought a used Prism off Fleabay to fit instead of the Spire that is supplied with it, I was looking at a standard 3600 processor but they keep going out of stock and price increases, so bought this one as it was near the same price at the time. I won't be doing any over clocking, and I will eventually fit a water loop, so this will more than keep me going until I do that.
I use it on my 2600X for 4.2 GHz all core OC. It idles at 27c and at 72c max load over time. Stunningly good temps that allowed me to beat the stock 3600 CPUZ single core score and virtually tie in multicore validated on site.
I am more impressed with this cooler everyday. It's been in my PC for the past week now. No complaints.
Hi, I have been following your channel for some time, found by chance while looking for information on the AMD prism stock cooler. I can't find information on the small button on the heatsink where the usb-rgb plugs are. What is it for? Thanks and happy new year :)
There should be 2 grommets covering ports for the USB and RGB connections and a small switch that will change the MAX RPM of the fan. Low ~ 3000rpm and High ~ 3600rpm.

I've been enjoying the Wraith Prism Cooler, but seeing better thermals I'll change it, I care about my pc's longevity, but I've certainly enjoyed the RGB on it, I have it customized to chase counter clockwise, and it looks awesome ! In 2008 I bought a Phenom II X4 940. It came with a stock "Wraith before it was called Wraith" AMD cooler. That CPU's TDP is 125W and the only cooler that I EVER used with it was that stock cooler. I then re-used it for my 965 and my FX-8350. Now, TWENTY-FIVE YEARS LATER, that Phenom II X4 940 CPU still works and (amazingly) so too does its cooler.
Don't let anyone scare you into thinking that using a stock cooler will reduce longevity because it clearly doesn't.

Funny I just got done building a spare gaming PC for my guests, and it has a Ryzen 7 3700X, And I stuck this cooler on it and man it keeps it around 53° C That was quite surprising in its performance. To the point now that I could probably lower its intensity because it is a pretty loud cooler.
But it looks great, and I wish they made case fans with that style of prismatic fan, when they get to a certain RPM, it's just mesmerizing to look into. The OEM is cooler master so I keep hoping that maybe I'll find the cooler master case fan equivalent, but they don't have any that I know of.
if you flip the Wraith Prism to mount from the bottom its so much easier, you can even remove the Wraith's fan and orient it so its not upside down. Its so easy this way.
Just upgraded to an X53 from the Wraith Prism on my 3700x, getting it off was a headache and getting it installed when I built my PC a year ago I though I was going to break that clamp I guess for a stock cooler this is the best you can get anyway, unlike Intel ones that go directly into the trash.
I have removed the stock Wratih fan (altogether with the plastic RGB housing) and jerryrigged in a "custom" 92mm fan with zip ties and two rubber something that I added for noise dampening and I've also used Kryonaut as heatpaste. So the cooler itself is quite good actually in my opinion, it's a shame that the rest of the budget went on an RGB housing instead of a slightly better fan, and I also don't like the mounting mechanism but believe me it still miles better than mounting the Cryorig H7. .D
Details for those insterested:
Used a Thermalright TR9225BW-1 fan specifically that I had laying around, but the point is: it wasn't something like a Noctua, but a very basic fan. Set a custom fan curve, so during "office use" it won't spin faster than a 1000RPM, and during gaming it goes to 1300RPM. You'd be suprised but it keeps my 3700X below 80°C (176°F) and at 1000RMP the fan is barely hearable, and at 1300RPM it's not louder than my GPU.
So I don't think it's a bad cooler, it actually has more heatpipes - 4 to be specific - than something like a Cryorigh H7 that has only 3, and which I have tried earlier but had very similar if not worse results - it was going up to 83-85°C (181-185°F) during Warzone.
I have also tried the Cooler Master MasterLiquid 240 which was obviously better but cost me something like $60 and was still peaking to 72°C (161°F) occaisonally.

Hello sir first of all thanks for the comparison this is probably the only wraith prism vs 240mm aio in English haha. Anyway my question is I'm building a PC this week with R7 3700x + 3070 16gb 3200mhz ram and asus b550 motherboard. I play games at 1080p 240hz mostly csgo valorant and dota. I'm looking to stream these games and otherwise I might just play gta 5 or other to chill out. Also note that I'm not going to overclock at all! Should I go for a 240mm/360mm aio liquid cooler or should I stick with the wraith prism? The case I'm going to use is cooler master masterbox mb511 argb e ATX. Please let me know asap thanks in advance ❤️
240 vs 360 is only going to make a small difference in temp. I would presume no noticeable difference in performance. Since you're streaming the additional stress on the GPU will increase temperatures. The wraith will be fine as long as your case has good airflow. Personally I would buy an AIO for peace of mind.

I had the cm 212 hyper, it burnt up within a few months. I returned it and got this instead. It is doing just as good.
you are 100% right these should be given with the up to the 6 core cpu as after that pretty much most people will fit an aftermarket cooler anyway.
exactly what you said mu friend got one with his 3900x and gave it to my kid for his 3600x and its perfect for that cpu and the lighting is also pretty cool on it

Thinking about it. This is basically how fanheaters work. You blow air over something hot and get.. hot air. Which if directed on something will heat it up... Does it make sense to blow hot exhaust over something to cool it?

I was going to get a Ryzen 5 but I wanted the Wraith Prism cooler. So paid the extra for a Ryzen 7. The cooler is fine and most PC build videos tell you that unless your over clocking don’t waste the extra money. Your video is the only one that I have seen it go that high.
I did stress it to the MAX so it's not surprising.

I considered a new BEQuiet Coolermaster i think it is called. I was wondering water cooling, but then i just though not worth the money ? not sure? im stuck and not sure what to do.
Tower coolers are a great affordable option that work as well or better than an aio water cooler. For example the Nuctua NH-D15 performs better than most aio coolers. It is not cheap though.

Honestly I think it will work great. I have a 5900x now but I no longer have the Wraith so I can't test it but I would say yes. That cooler is very effective.
I stilll have and use my 3700X (in 2022). I have it maxed out in PBO. And DDR4 3800MHz (CL16), and ASUS TUF Gaming X570-Plus (Wi-Fi). I scored *13,004* in *Cinebench R23*
The clips suck when installing it into the case, but I think it's MUCH easier though if you're constantly swapping fans, CPUs, motherboards, etc and installing it on the CPU outside of the case like I do with test builds. I regularly swap in my 2600x to update the BIOS on 450M motherboards that aren't updated for Ryzen 5000 CPUs and use the prism for this task. It's much easier to take apart for sure.

I am from india & using ryzen 7 3800X for studying engineering software, but i never use 100GPU because of thermal throttle. Currently temp is 34-38c. Sunny day it goes upto 42. AMD stock cooler is not able to handle temperature well.
do you use nzxt cam to control the aio kraken?

Yeha I don't trust the temp readings from CAM. I use HWiNFO for temps. Only use cam for my cooler RGB
Just got one for $30CAD from someone who got it for free with their Ryzen 7. I have an AIO cooler but I don’t do any heavy gaming, so I don’t see a need to have water in the build if it’s not necessary. Plus the RGB has to decrease temps a little? Pretty sure that’s how it works anyway.

I got one for 3.5$. It was completely worth it for my ryzen 7. Which used to run on a wraith stealth. I could tell the difference immediately. It was as if the CPU breathed a sigh of relief after screaming forever every time I ramped up Forza or No mans Sky.
did you test also the 6 pipes prism? it should be way better than the 4 pipes one
Honestly I want to get my hands on one. The One I have has grown on me quite a bit. It's a great cooler. Even for my 3700x.

According to AMD, Wraith Prism cooler with 6 pipes are fake ones :)
While the testing isn't that rigorous by any means (compared to say GamersNexus), I actually found it to be really helpful instead of a drawback. It's a much more pragmatic way of answering the title's question without needing to use super complicated graphs or testing methods.

My personnal Experience with the Wraith Prism is that it performs even better if the Fan is set on 100%, it cools it off hard enough and makes the job done right in every extremly high intensity CPU use, including Mining. However it's noisy but if it's not a heavy criteria, it's simply perfect. imo i use a e34 Freezer duo with a NT-H1 thermal paste and my 3700x is enough cooled, i keep the other Wraith prism for any funny builds that dosen't involve noise complaining :)

Absolutely.
I like the prism...so far...on 2 r7 5800X ...my issue on tower cooling is having all that stuff hanging off the motherboard. It's quiet and temps are about 50c running 24/7 and overclocking not a thing...how fast can Excel or cyberpunk go...Using a full atx case...mounting is NOT a treat and not to be done in dim light..read the instructions...then read them again.
If we were talking about a micro atx or half height...we'd have a different discussion.
Was the fan set to HI ? there's a tiny switch on the side that lets you switch btetween LO and HI... It comes stock set as LO
Set to LO max ~3000rpm I believe the Hi setting is 3500

I've been using AMD stock coolers for 25+ years and I've never had a problem even once. My Phenom II X4 940 still works as well as it did the day I bought it. It has never seen an aftermarket cooler of any kind.
When you think about it, why would AMD enclose a stock cooler that wasn't good? That would just be a waste of money for them.
Damn though... 80 degrees? my Wraith rarely goes above 55C, either this is cuz my 3700x is only ever at 60% usage at most and i'm barely overclocking to 4.05mhz, OR it could be because i have a super high airflow case, my fans are manually adjusted a bit faster than the turbo setting, and my house is usually at 22 Celsius. Probably all of those reasons. Its why i'm pretty happy with the cooler for now.
My case was open but these temps are from pushing the cpu to 100p. Very good cooler.
In Poland even tho electronics are expensive as hell (gigabyte 3060ti for like 700$ and it will go higher because of government new "smartphone tax" project lol) you can find new wraith prism for 15$, I used it on my Ryzen 5 3600XT and you are basically right, it should be included with 5s, even with the better iterations of ryzen 3, this cooler is actually made for these processors :p And i too do not know any person using wraith prism in their r7 or r9, however I was surprised how close it was to AIO in gaming... For low/mid range ryzens it's really a banger if you can get it cheap, on the wraith spirei was getting about 75-80 degrees in gaming, the drop is massive.
For that price you can't go wrong. The more I tinker with it the more I am impressed. I'd even say that it is absolutely sufficient for my 3700X.

In tests cpu is stock or OC? In stock cpu, my be quiet dark rock pro 4 have 79-81c degrees in Aida fpu stress test, it’s good?

I just picked one up for 20 bucks for my R5 3600. I mostly am just gaming so I'm glad I found this video I feel like for 20 bucks I didn't get a bad deal overall.

The prism on a 3600 is well worth it. Picked one up myself, on the cheap. My max temps dropped about 20c and my cinebench score increased by around 70 points straight out of the box. With a bit of tweaking and playing around, it's even better. I can run PBO + AOC mobo setting, hitting 4.2 on all or most cores boost for extended periods, and I'm looking at low 70's for max under load temps. I honestly think shipping the 3000 series R5's with a Prism would've been an ideal set up.
Actually, I bought a Ryzen 7 3800x, wich just broke up while playing and then the RMA sent me a Ryzen 7 5800x instead. I bought it bc I never had a highend processor and I just wanted to. I do not overclock it and I am using it prism wraith from the 3800x. It is so loud and sometimes it just annoys me so much that I really want to change it to water cooling.
I mean, that's probably the main reason I use an AIO water cooler. Can run the fans much quieter.
I dont know bro for a stock cooler its pretty dam good, even playing vidya games my temps never go over 60 and when doing nothing its at like 30, and its summer time here. Im just always pleaslently suprised ive not felt the need to get a better cooler in all the years ive had this 2700x. And im prob gonna keep it for my 5700x once it shows up.

If you think it looks good then buy it. It works!
I feel on the 3300X it'll be a great cooler. That chip isn't going to get near as hot as a Ryzen 7 or 9. I just gave my prism to my 14-year-old to better cool her Ryzen 3100 and I don't regret a thing. It looks good and keeps her 3100 plenty cool all while running near-silent due to the temps remaining so low. Much cooler in fact than the stock wraith stealth that came with her CPU, her temps dropped nearly 10-15 degrees on average. Not so much for my Ryzen 3900X though, I went aftermarket for my particular CPU. In fact, I never put the Prism on my 3900X so I couldn't tell you how well or bad the cooling is on my CPU however on a Ryzen 3 or 5 go for it!
Well, you have an ambient temp of 24°C which is hot! The optimal roomtemp is 21°C/22°C This means your temp results has to be calculated with minus 2°C.
Whilst not great for the chips they come with. Picking up one of these coolers spare for like £20 is a great option for lower chips. Threw one on a Ryzen 3 3100, and it overclocked straight to 4.5GHz at 1.25V and stays sub 60 with the fan turned down. So plenty of headroom for better chips. Like the 3600xt or 5600x

That is unusual. Typically fans will run near max RPM at start them go down to set values. Does it run during regular use?

I hav problem with my fan it gos form silet to jet engine. I dit put core voltage to 1.35 it only helped with temps from 53 to 43 C but fan still does the same thnig

Between the inherent worry of leaks (pessimistic attitude what'ca gonna do) and the chore of cleaning the damn pump vs an air cooler that just needs simple dusting and nice RGB fan, I think I'm gonna stick with the Wraith Prism since' it's a nice in-bewteen compared to the Stealth and the giant block that is coolermaster. For now at least....

Are you kidding? 65W?! That Wraith cooler was designed for 125W! The "Wraith-before-it-was-called-Wraith" AMD stock coolers (which are pretty much identical to the Wraith) came with the 125W Deneb, Thuban, Bulldozer and Piledriver CPUs. The actual "Named Wraith" came with the FX-8370 (also rated at 125W).
Don't assume that just because something is stock means that it's crap because in this case, you couldn't be more wrong.

I haven't seen that. I would suggest finding out how to disassemble and go from there. Maybe post a video of your success.

With the right pair of headphones you won't even hear a jet engine. For those of us that like open back headphones it's a different story unfortunately :(
Way I look at it is the prism comes at no extra cost as 1 unit and performs, looks great but the water cooler is extra cost
