    hello! when i go to take off the optical drive cover (where you pull the tab and push it back) it doesn’t work. could it possibly be jammed? how do i fix this?

    • @CompTechMike
      @CompTechMike  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Thanks for the comment. I assume you mean the blue tab where you lift up and push the optical drive back shown at 3:15 , correct?
      Yes, those can jam or bend if a drive was improperly inserted in the case or if something heavy was placed on the case at any point. Tough to say without seeing it. I don't really have any tricks or secrets, just keep trying, wiggle each component a little bit, and maybe also squirt a bit of WD-40 down there to loosen things up. I've also seen a few cases where the spring popped off, you might be able to get down in there with a narrow flatblade screwdriver to push things into the right spot. Keep trying, it should come out eventually. Good luck!

    I’ll try the pre bios test on mine, it’s a pita failing to boot with just the number 1 error led lot. This is supposed to mean ‘unable to see memory’ but it was working and I’ve tried each stick in each slot and it’s the same wherever. PSU is good, cpu looks good cmos cleared and back up battery good I can only imagine it’s a dirty contact or a failed m’board.

    • @CompTechMike
      @CompTechMike  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good luck! Try with just a single stick and cleaning the contacts with 99-100% isopropyl alcohol (not that 50% junk).

    hi Mike.I just had the power switch component changed. the LED light comes on when pressed. But the front start button wont respond. Is it the BIOS battery on the motherboard that needs changing? And is there a particular model or just a supermarket available battery? Non-techie learning fast. Pls advise. thanks

    • @CompTechMike
      @CompTechMike  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi! Thanks for the comment. I'm not exactly sure I understand your issue. When you press the power button a few things should happen including the lights on the front flashing, the fan starting to spin, the hard drive spinning up, and eventually the display coming on. Is your system not powering on at all? What color is the power light (green or amber)? Dell Optiplex's have a bank of lights across the front numbered 1-2-3-4. Are any of them lit up? I would start checking those items first.
      The battery on the motherboard is a standard CR2032, available at most places that sell watch batteries (Walmart, Best Buy, Amazon, etc.). A dead battery would not prevent the computer from turning on, however it would prevent the computer from saving all of the important BIOS settings. If the battery has failed you'd get a warning on the screen indicating that it has failed and prompting you to configure the BIOS. Hope this helps!

    • @CompTechMike

      @@jesjes1275 Hi! Diagnostic LED's 1 & 3 usually indicate a memory issue. It may be an issue with the RAM chips themselves (try taking out all but one stick and see if it works then), or the memory interface on the motherboard. Go back and double-check all the power supply connections, including the 4-pin connector near the processor. After that I'd try swapping the RAM. If you are unable to get it to work with a single stick of RAM in any slot than the issue is most likely with the motherboard. Motherboards for these systems can usually be found on Ebay & Amazon pretty cheap.

    Hi,i have this 780 and i use for while but today i turn it on and starting to hear a continously beeping noise in my monitor shows press to inter configuration

    • @CompTechMike
      @CompTechMike  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Sorry to hear that. Beeping usually means some kind of hardware issue. Are you also getting any trouble code lights along the front?
      I would start by working through the troubleshooting steps shown in this video and mentioned in the comments. Start by double-checking all of your cords and connections, make sure everything is connected properly. Then take out all of the memory except for one stick, and all expansion cards, and see if it will boot then. Swap the ram around and give everything a good cleaning. If you get any of the 1-2-3-4 error lights or a specific beep sequence, look that up in the Optiplex 780 troubleshooting manual. Most likely it is a bad or loose stick of ram, but even if it is something more significant (like the motherboard) you should be able to get parts cheaply on sites like Amazon or eBay. Good luck!

    While watching TH-cam screen went dead and I got six beeps. I rebooted and got six beeps on startup. I rebooted a couple of times and it started working normally for a few minutes and then poof six beeps. As I understand it, six beeps is a graphics card issue. I took it apart thinking to replace the graphics card, but there was no graphics card installed. Any suggestions as how I should proceed? Thanks.

    • @CompTechMike
      @CompTechMike  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Is this an OptiPlex 780? The manual doesn't indiciate a six beep code error:
      www.manualsdir.com/manuals/621892/dell-optiplex-780.html?page=23
      What lights are lit on the front? The 1-2-3-4 lights? Those are usually more revealing.
      jsmcomputers.com/pub/pdf/optiplex%20780%20SFF.pdf
      That said, the usual troubleshooting steps for hardware are all applicable. Remove every extra part and all but one stick of RAM and see if it will boot then. Try the RAM in different slots. If it works like this, add components back one-by-one until you find the failure. You can also run BIOS-level diagnostics (assuming the machine will boot to BIOS) to help identify issues. Good luck!

      Hi! Thanks for the comment. Here is a link to the troubleshooting manual:
      images-eu.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/B1cEeKjqcPS.pdf
      According to the manual, a blinking "3" indicates a processor failure has occurred. I would try removing, cleaning, and reinstalling the processor (using new thermal paste). You should also remove any upgrade cards and all but one stick of RAM for testing purposes. If the problem persists after that you could try either a replacement processor or a replacement motherboard. In my experience it's more likely for the motherboard to have failed, but the processor itself could also be bad.
      Personally I'd swap the processor first (since it's easiest). If problem persists replace motherboard. Fortunately both components are cheap and easy to obtain on sites like eBay and Amazon.com. Good luck!

    Im having the blinking orange light issue with my 780 MT. Usually its 3 and 1 blinking with orange after using the PS bottom in the back sometimes just 3 flashes. And sometimes when i do the jumper with the password reset to the RTCRST it stays only solid ambar, til i move back the jumper then starts blinking again with 3 and 1 light. , No beeps aside from tiny electric noises from the int speaker, fan works no sign of any burnt , i actually managed to turn it on several times before pressing the PS bottom and power b but after a power outtage i was unable to do the same.

    • @CompTechMike
      @CompTechMike  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! If you do the jumper to clear CMOS it's not going to boot. This is normal behavior. The button on the back of the power supply is to verify if the power supply works. If you press it and the fans start to spin, it means you have power reaching the board.
      Try removing all cards and accessories and all but one stick of memory. You may need to alternate which slot that memory is installed in, and try a different memory stick. Basically remove or swap all of the easily removed and/or swapped components. Does it boot then?
      A guide to diagnostic codes can be found here:

      Try checking all the connections from the PSU. Typically there are two - the wide one that goes to the motherboard, and the smaller 4-pin one that also goes to the motherboard, but at the front near where the processor is. Check that one first. Good luck!

      Hi! Thanks for checking out my video. Yes, the old saying is that anything can be fixed, with enough time/money. I generally try not to mess with power supply internals due to the high voltages that can be present there. Don't particularly feel like getting shocked; it's easier to replace them as a unit. 😉

    • @CompTechMike
      @CompTechMike  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! Great question. Wikipedia has a list of which Intel processors support AES-NI. Older systems like the Optiplex 780 in this video won't, but something a little bit newer like a 3020 (which generally have 4th gen Intel processors) should support this feature. 3020's are rapidly being decommissioned by most of the companies I work with, we've got hundreds sitting on a shelf right now waiting to be recycled. If that model works for you you can probably pick one up cheap. Good luck!

    • @CompTechMike
      @CompTechMike  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! Thanks for commenting on my video. It sounds like you have power since the fans are spinning momentarily, correct? Have you checked that everything is physically connected and tight inside the case? Especially the connectors between the power supply and motherboard. Is the power light by-chance lighting up amber/yellow color? If so, I'd start by removing any expansion cards and all but one memory stick. Try again in that configuration. You may also swap memory sticks to different slots, just to rule out an issue with an individual stick. Also, are any of the 1-2-3-4 diagnostic lights lighting up on the front of the case? These can help point you in the right direction, based on the troubleshooting manual:
      www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000126021/a-reference-guide-to-the-dell-optiplex-diagnostic-indicators
      If you've already done all these things and the machine is still not powering on, it's most likely you've suffered a motherboard failure. Unfortunately the motherboards aren't easily repairable, but they are easy to swap out with basic hand tools. You should be able to buy a replacement motherboard on sites like amazon or ebay for around $40-$50 USD. If you've watched my entire video it should be pretty clear how to remove the board. Hope this helps!

    do these still have value i have about 13 of these and 4 of them don't work should I fix it or not?

    • @CompTechMike
      @CompTechMike  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Thanks for the comment. Whether or not something has value is a pretty subjective question, don't you think? Depending on what processor, RAM, video, and storage is installed, the cost of upgrading them may exceed the cost of just buying a new computer. In that case, I wouldn't say they have much value.
      But for me, personally, what I do is fix them up, add a WiFi adapter (around $13), install the latest version of Windows 10, a few utilities, productivity suite, and set them up so they run well, then sell them for a couple hundred bucks along with a monitor and new keyboard/mouse on Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist. Because I know that the computers I build are better configured than some bloatware-filled junk you might buy at Walmart or Best Buy. I even make videos of my computers before I sell them, so people know exactly what they are getting.
      Anyhow, that's just my .02 cents. I believe they have value because if you set them up right they can still work well and be of value to someone else. Cheers!

    • @CompTechMike
      @CompTechMike  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! Thanks for the comment. I'm not too familiar with that particular error message but it sounds like at some point either yourself, or someone who had access to the machine, installed DDP - the Dell Data Protection utility - and now that utility is either broken, no longer functioning correctly, or the key has been lost. You didn't mention do you have unaccessible data encrypted on the machine or not? If you do not, I think the easiest way would be to just "nuke it from orbit" -- do a fresh reinstall of the Windows operating system from a flash drive. There are hundreds of links showing how to do this, here's one to get you started:
      th-cam.com/video/zwxsDOrIlxY/w-d-xo.html&
      This process will completely erase the hard drive and give you a fresh installation of the operating system. You can use it for either Windows 10 or 11, although with the age of your system I'd recommend sticking with 10. You can then reinstall all your system-specific drivers from Dell's support website and any tools and applications from the specific providers.
      If you *do* have files and data saved on the machine that you currently can't access, you'll need to either reach out to Dell's support or to a company that specializes in recovering data off hard drives such as DriveSavers or Kroll Ontrack. Given the age of the machine I don't think Dell is going to be much help; recommend contacting a data recovery firm to regain access to your data.
      In summary: if you don't have any data on the machine, format the hard drive and reinstall Windows. If you do have data on the machine that you can't access, contact a data recovery firm. I would personally never recommend using Dell's encryption tools. If you want to encrypt your data use Microsoft Bitlocker, and always store a copy of your recovery key in a safe location.
      This thread on Dell's support site may be helpful:

      @@212wahid1 hi Wahid, without having the system in front of me it's impossible to tell exactly, but if I had to guess it sounds like the original 80GB hard drive was encrypted with the Dell encryption tool I mentioned previously. And whomever performed the upgrade did not properly migrate the data from its encrypted state onto the new drive.
      My recommendation would be to put the old hard drive back in, remove all of the encryption, and then re-migrate the unencrypted data back onto the new drive. There are various tools and utilies that can help with the migration. Alternatively, put the old 80GB drive back in, back up your data to a portable external hard drive, then install the new drive, perform a fresh install of Windows on it, and then copy back your data from the external backup. Hi! Thanks for the comment. I'm not really sure I understand what you are describing. There are two cables going from the power supply to the motherboard. The large ATX-style connector, and the smaller 4-pin black and yellow wire that connects near the processor. Neither of those are for the display. Both must be plugged in in order for the computer to operate. There are additional cables for the drives but these don't need to be plugged in for the computer to be able to turn on.
      The test button on the back of the power supply is for testing the power supply. If you press it with the computer off, the fans should spin. This will indicate that the power supply itself is working. If you press the main power button and nothing else is functioning and the computer is not turning on (no lights, no beeps, no 1-2-3-4 error codes), then your issue is typically the motherboard. Occasionally it may also be the power button itself, the panel the button is on, or the cable that connects it to the motherboard, but those components going bad is rare. The motherboard is much more frequently the issue, in these cases.
      You can typically buy a correct replacement motherboard for around $40 on sites like Amazon and eBay. You will need to make sure you get the right one for your particular model, then follow the instructions and commentary in this video to replace it. Good luck!

They came in MT, DT, SFF, and USFF sizes, respectively (mini tower, desktop, small form factor, ultra small form factor). You won't be able to fit an ATX PSU without a lot of hacking and chopping. On the DT chassis shown in this video it would connect right behind the front grill. On larger chassis' machines (such as the MT "mini tower" chassis) it would sit above or near the hard drive cage. Hey, I have this Ram problem on my 780, is there a way to fix it?

    • @CompTechMike
      @CompTechMike  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Thanks for the comment. When you say "I have this RAM problem" could you be more specific? What problem are you having, exactly? There are several different types of problems, and several troubleshooting steps you can take to help resolve them.
      First, I'd recommend you start by removing all but one stick of RAM. Try it in different slots. If your problem is that you have a single bad stick, this will help you to determine which stick is at fault. You can also run the built-in BIOS hardware tests (press F12 after turning the machine on) which will test your memory.
      Also, across the front of the machine, are the lights 1-2-3-4. If you get a specific sequence of lights or a beep code, try looking that up in the Optiplex 780 Technical Manual (link elsewhere in the comments, or you should be able to google it).
      Worst case scenario if it's your motherboard at fault (rather than a stick of RAM), replacement motherboards are available on sites like Amazon and eBay starting at around $40 USD. Just make sure to get the correct size board for your case (either USFF, SFF, DT, or MT). Good luck!

      @CompTechMike  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Thanks for the comment. Based on your several comments it sounds like you're already doing some troubleshooting. That's great! If I'm reading right, it sounds like removing your graphics card resolved the display issues. So you may have a faulty 3rd party graphics card. It could also be a loose or dirty connection on that card, so maybe something you can fix.
      Also you mention the computer is unable to boot to Windows, even in Safe Mode. Just to rule out any further hardware issues I recommend you press F12 and run the built-in hardware diagnostics. This will test hardware including CPU and RAM.
      If all hardware tests pass and the computer is still unable to boot, it's likely you have a corrupt operating system. You can try creating a bootable USB flash drive to use some of the advanced recovery options. Worst case scenario, format the hard drive and reinstall Windows - that will fix any OS issue, LOL. There are some other steps you can take, but I'd recommend first running those hardware diagnostic tests and seeing if you can use any of the advanced recovery options ("Repair your computer") available on a recovery disk or USB drive. I show how to create one of those in this other video:

I would try removing all expansion cards and all but one stick of memory and see if the system is able to boot normally. If it is, re-add each component (RAM, expansion cards, USB accessories, etc.) one at a time to try to identify which component may have failed. I would recommend going through and removing and reseating any expansion cards, memory sticks, check all internal connectors, etc. If possible remove all cards and all but one stick of memory and test like that. Then add each piece back one-by-one, and see if the failure reoccurs with just one specific piece of hardware. You might also try swapping the memory to other slots and running the built-in hardware diagnostics. These systems are old, depending on the environment you're running in you may want to give all connectors a thorough cleaning (for example: with some electrical contact cleaner or high grade alcohol). Not sure the Dell part number. Did you have any other questions?

      just hoping you might have a model number. I've tried searching on eBay but can't seem to get good keywords. the reason I'm interested is because I could mount a larger graphics card using that back plate. thanks for the reply.

      I'm sorry, Dell can be pretty obfuscated to find the exact model number for some of these sort of parts. I've ran into the same problem with other components. One thing to keep in mind is that while it will allow you to mount a physically larger card, you may run into problems with insufficient power supply if your card is too large. Good luck!

      @@thebotkid554playz6 You would need to purchase and install a compatible motherboard. Speaking from experience, this is not a cost-effective upgrade path for a Dell Optiplex 780. You will have a very difficult time finding a board that fits this system and which also supports that particular processor.

      @@thebotkid554playz6 Sure, that should work. As long as the motherboard is the correct form factor to fit inside the OptiPlex 780 case. Although that's not a very cost-effective upgrade - at that point might as well just use a 980. But I suppose if you have spare parts lying around, go for it! :-D

      I checked the device manager and the rx 550 and the pci serial port and the pci simple communications controller has a yellow exclamation mark next to it I did upgrade the rx 550 driver and upgraded the bios as well I couldn’t find anything for the q9400

    • @CompTechMike
      @CompTechMike  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@isaiahwilkes9131 Hi Isaiah! Thanks for checking out my video. The Q9400 is one of the mid-range quad core processors for this machine. If you wanted to upgrade that to something a bit faster, I'd look at Q9550 or Q9650. It's not much of a boost, but a bit better than the Q9400.
      16GB or RAM is the max these models can take so you're good there, and it sounds like you got a halfway decent hard drive and graphics card as well. That said, I wouldn't really try to use it for gaming. I mainly do basic office productivity tasks. The 780 line is more than a decade old at this point, and will leave you pretty disappointed if you try to use it for gaming. Can still be useful for basic word processing and web browsing tasks, however.
      Regarding the "no boot device" error, I'd go through BIOS and disable any ports that don't physically have a device connected. There's a screen where it says something like "Port 0, Port 1, Port 2". Connect your boot drive to port 0 and disable any others that don't physically have a drive connected in BIOS.
      I'm having a hard time understanding the rest of your question. Like I said above, you're not going to have much luck playing games on these unless you only want to play games that came out a decade ago. From the error message you posted it sounds like "your graphics hardware does not support all features" --- it's just saying your hardware is too old.
      The OptiPlex 780 is capable of running the latest version of Windows 10 22H2, which is still supported by Microsoft for a couple more years. I'd load that on there and make sure you take off any "bloat" that can slow it down. Also make sure you download the latest drivers for that graphics card from the manufacturer's website (this should fix the yellow exclamation mark issue). For the other drivers you need to download them from Dell's support site. Use it for basic productivity or "retro gaming" and you should be fine. 😉 Hope this helps!

      Hi! Not sure I understand your question. Most form factors of this machine, including the "DT" or Desktop form factor shown in this video, do have room for one standard optical drive. That's pretty dated technology now though. 😉

      Hi! Try removing all cards and accessories and all but one stick of memory. You may need to alternate which slot that memory is installed in, and try a different memory stick. Basically remove or swap all of the easily removed and/or swapped components. Does it boot then?
