    These old Dell boxes are nigh indestructible. That growly, angry buzzing usually means a CPU or memory problem, which you can pin-point by looking at the lights "1234" and cross referencing their pattern to the service manual. Might be good to know for someone!

      Yeah, the thing is, I didn't want to change the RAM with this capacitor issue. I was afraid about that the PSU killed the previous RAM 😅 But as you said, Dell boxes are so great that it was not the case here.

    Replacing capacitors must be scary, but as long as you drain it of power before touch the capacitors you should be fine right?

    • @french.satisfactory
      @french.satisfactory  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      In fact, the 1st thing you have to do is that, remove the power cable, and turn on the computer without it couple of time. This will normally make empty all the capacitors. Then, you can also check if there is still power in the capacitors by using a un voltmeter ✌️

    So it was the RAM, not the PSU recap?
    PS. I have an Optiplex 745 that I put way too much into, I went through two replacement motherboards (original dead, first replacement unstable, second one worked), then a Q6600 came up for cheap, and after that, well I had to give it 8GB and a low profile GPU.... Really must decide what to do with it.... Can it run Crysis?
    The card I got, R5 240 1GB is probably a bottleneck for a Q6600, but the price was right and it could be Nimezed

    • @french.satisfactory
      @french.satisfactory  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah Matthew, it was finally the RAM and not the PSU. But I wanted to fix these capacitors first, because I didn't want this PSU kill other RAM.

    Normally, the BIOS batteries, the RAM, the power supply, or even the video cards themselves tend to cause problems when it comes to turning on the PC. You have to try each component until you discover the culprit.

      Well, they are for me also. Finally the issue of this computer was the RAM. Even with 5 plagued capacitors, looks like this computer was still running with good RAMs. The thing is, I didn't want the PSU dommage something else that's why I fixed this first.

    I believe the problem has to do with the cpu supported ram speed. (AKA Bus Speed)
    You see, most E/Duo models support 1066 MHz max. Like the one you used “E7400”
    While some Quad cores support up to 1333 MHz max.
    I suggest getting a Q6600, it’s very cheap but does the job goodie. However I’m not positive that it will work on your Small factor as all quads only work with Optiflex MT (mini towers). You need to upgrade the priority PSU. But good luck finding something as the same size or smaller!

    Friendly Neighborhood Nerd here. Capacitor replacement in this day and age has... kind of become a catch-all fix. Be aware that in most cases, this is NOT your issue, electronically speaking. The lone exception would be machines from around the early 2000s -- roughly 2001 or 2002 at the earliest, through 2009 at the _absolute_ latest, and much more realistically, 2003 through 2006 -- when the so-called "capacitor plague" was a thing. These are all Windows XP machines with Pentium 4 CPUs or Celerons based on the Pentium 4. Pentium III systems were too early, and the first Core series systems (Core Solo/Duo CPU) were too late. A _very_ few Pentium M based (very early slim/SFF) desktops _might_ be affected, but by and large it's things like the Dell Optiplex 240 or the Dell Dimension 2400, along with HP Compaq systems of the era (the two companies having _just_ merged) and the very, very earliest Lenovo ThinkCentres (having taken over from IBM in 2004-5), most of which would still have IBM branding on them, as Lenovo was allowed to do that somewhat briefly.
    Also, in the realm of vintage computing -- be aware that vintage home computers such as those made by Commodore, Tandy, and even the original IBM gear, were a LOT more rugged and resilient than nearly everything is today, and they had a lot less to break inside as well. If it doesn't boot at first, don't just chalk it up to "well of course not, it's an old computer" -- get online, there are enthusiast communities for almost every machine from that era. If the fix required sounds like something out of your depth, please at least make sure your machine gets into the hands of someone who cares about it and _can_ fix it. Those old systems are precious to those of us who still preserve them. This is likewise true of game console systems of the era. A lot of people, locally, have thrown out Atari 2600 and Commodore gear and seeing that stuff in eWaste recycling bins where you are legally prohibited from rescuing it (the county where I live is in charge of that and gets a kickback from the recycling company) genuinely makes me die a little inside. DON'T BE THE PERSON WHO DOES THAT. Fix it, love it -- or get it to someone else who can and will.
    Most of the rest of this was just simple, basic troubleshooting -- reseating RAM, swapping spare parts. A word of advice on the upgrades, though -- if your power supply has bad capacitors, even though it's a proprietary Dell unit, it's probably worth replacing outright at that point... especially if you're going to drop an SSD in there. I would also max out the RAM and get the best reasonably-affordable CPU the system will support (this will depend on BIOS version -- get the newest BIOS from Dell and flash it to the board, first). If you're not going to upgrade RAM and CPU, or bother with replacing the power supply... just drop in a relatively recent 500gb laptop hard drive, one of the mechanical ones; this will actually provide a noticeable speed increase over that creaky old Maxtor, and for an absolute pittance... also, just get a generic 2.5-to-3.5 adapter for the drive off shAmazon or fleaBay, rather than 'splurging' (if you can call it that) even for the cost of the Sabrent -- it's just not worth it, if you're not going the full distance.
    That said -- if you DID upgrade all of those things, and you were able to somehow fit a higher-wattage power supply in there, you might also consider dropping in a relatively inexpensive gaming-grade graphics card, something in the $/£/€ 50-100 range. Most cards in that range are actually fairly competent even still today -- you don't need a bleeding-edge card that costs a genuinely princely sum for most games -- and even on the lower end of that, with a CPU and RAM upgrade, and a power supply reasonably able to drive the graphics card, you have a machine that will serve a young teen for several years as a starting games machine, the sort of fellow who's into Call of Duty, Fortnite, Roblox, Minecraft, that sort of thing.
    Getting the power supply right is a bit of math, but it's easy -- look up the CPU and what's called the "chipset" on your motherboard (the two biggest chips that aren't the CPU, generally at least one will have a heatsink) and find out their "TDP" rating in watts. Add that together, round up to the nearest roughly ten watts (10w). For every USB2.0 port on the system, add 5w, for every USB3.0 port or USB-C port, add 10w. Find out the TDP of the graphics card, add that on. Add another 2w for every SSD, 5w for spinning laptop drives, 10w for spinning desktop drives like that Maxtor or for CD/DVD drives -- 15w for HDDs and slim/laptop optical drives, or 25w for desktop optical drives, if they're fairly old (from before about 2010 or so). Another 5w for any peripheral cards other than the graphics card (for example, a sound card or a network card... 10w+ if it's a really fancy sound card, like a Sound Blaster Audigy or something... if there's a modem card, you almost certainly can just pull that out and be fine.) Round up to the nearest 5w, and that's your minimum power supply rating. If you can only get a really dodgy power supply... roughly double that final number, sorry.
    But if all you're going to drop in is an SSD, it's really not worth your time to repair the power supply. Just replace it.

      wow, that's a comment 😍
      First, I did read all your words. That's really interesting and amazing to see how skilled you are about these stuffs.
      In fact, my main goal here was just to clean the computer in a satisfying way. I was inspired but a French TV show "c'est du propre" which was itself inspired by "How Clean is Your House ?" in the UK. I also wanted to add a "restoration TH-cam video" touch as I love that content. I had all of this in mind when I started this channel.
      So to answer you, there was no deep intent when I published this video. Just wanted to make satisfying content to watch. I didn't even want to upgrade things. Just wanted to make clean a computer I found dirty/dusty and make an as satisfying video as I could with it. With this video a tried something a bit different, because I wanted to try fixing this PSU in a video.
      But I get what you mean, I really would like to say thank you very much for taking time writing all of this.

    RAM sticks compatibility are the most problem in DELL computers, they have to be the same as preconized by the brand.
    I have a laptop with corsait and samsung and the samsung freeeze Windows sometimes ! Care also with the quality of SSD Nvme put inside. >This brand is very sensible. Good job otherwise.

    Blody hell man, is this worthy the effort ? I usually just replace the psu by minimum...

      Hi Manuel! Well usually I would also just replace the PSU. But I wanted to replace these capacitors for couple of reasons.
      - Gain skills. The last time I used a soldering iron was when I was student
      - Sometimes, I have an old PC I want to make a restoration. And it can be difficult to find components.
      - Some PCs have specific components difficult to find. On this computer I can"t just go to the computer shot and take a random PSU. Dell computer have often specific components.
      - It makes for me a pretty nice video❤️

      Oh you are right, I realised that I forgot it a bit later.I putted it back, but it was too complicated to integrate this part in the video editing without destroy my transitions. So I decided to not add it in the video, but the this plastic part is well back in the PSU 😉
      Nice shot! ✌️
