LFC#51 - Dell Orange Light Diagnostics

  • A diagnostics session on a Dell Vostro 220 throwing an Orange light on startup. Spoilers below...
Initially thought it was going to be the PSU, but a BIOS reset (remove RTC battery) was the cure. Sadly I wasn't able to resolve the cause of the orange light, but it'll be put through several on/off/warm up/cool down cycles to make sure it's really fixed.
If the BIOS reset hadn't worked, my next move would've been to remove the CPU and hunt down a spare - with the dusty HSF, I suspected a dead CPU.

sometimes it's either the memory or the cmos battery. 😁👍

glad I watched all the way thru as it was the little rtc battery on my Inspiron 560 as well. Took it out, waited a few minutes, plugged it back in and everything worked! Never, ever would have known if I hadn't of found this video, thanks!

This helped me today. I reset the bios...and never thought to take it out. Just FYI when a fan is that dirty and I feel it has heated up quite a bit...I re-paste the CPU. This might have been the culprit to trigger the BIOS battery. Just a check. ok Cheers!

Ive had issues with my power supply ever since i got my used computer. I would have to disconnect the 24-pin to the motherboard and plug it in and it would work. Today that didnt work. So i took off the ram and plugged them back in and it booted up. Thanks mate!

Thank you so much for this video!! My computer isn't on warranty and it started flashing amber and wouldn't boot. So I cleaned inside the desktop, plugged stuff out and put them back in, changed the CMOS battery (I think it's called that) literally nothing I did worked. But from watching this video, I took those long rectangle things that's in the videos thumbnail and wiped them with a cloth and put em back in. Now i now can turn on my computer and now back up my stuff incase my computer decides to bail on me again. Thank you so much you're a life saver!!!!!

I already had a deal with Dell for them to pick up my computer, fix it and send it back (permission to wipe the hard disk requested!). Then I watched your video. I'm afraid I was lazy and skipped the new power supply option in favor of the easy stuff first, on my son's suggestion. Popped the battery, replaced it, good to go. So, you know, nice job.
I was wondering, what if that hadn't done it? What would you have done next? Then I noticed in your comments that you're working on a general diagnostics video. That'll probably cover what comes next. I've subscribed to your channel so I can catch that and you're other gold nuggets. Keep up the good work!

We have a set of the Dell Vostro 220s - One week after our warranty went out one of the computers amber light lit up. Since Feb 2010... that computer has been sitting. When my operating computer has trouble, we've always been able to use it for parts (power supply) and test when we have problems.
My power supply went out again, just received the new supply - replace it and thought while I have it open, why not go ahead and see what I can find on the net. Found your video... and guess what? I remove the RTC battery... and it fixed it.! Wow... what are the chances of that happening? Only 2% of the hard drive is used... only bad thing, it has Windows XP OS.
I do have a new 7 Professional... just do not have the wherewithal to upgrade. Thanks for you video.!

My "new" Dell Inspiron 530 I just got has a solid amber light on the power button. Surprisingly when I pressed the amber button it went blue and it DID POST a couple times and I checked out the BIOS. I put a solid state drive in it and powered it on but it won't POST now. I disconnected the SSD but it still won't POST. It now still has the solid amber light but when I press the power button it goes blue like before but it will not beep. The screen doesn't power on now either. I press the power button again and it turns off. I don't have to hold it in to turn it off. I might have to get a new Power Suppy Unit. I DID replace the CMOS battery as I was told the old one was bad and the guy I bought it from replaced it with another old battery and he wasn't sure about it. So I put in a new one. But my power button isn't flashing orange which I think means its the CMOS. It's light is solid amber. So solid orange means a power supply problem, I've read.
After watching your video I'm going to try unplugging the same things like you did. Making sure I know where everything goes. But resetting the BIOS might be the answer as the guy I was talking to said when he took the power out the BIOS was resetting and then he put in a new battery. Plus my Inspiron 530 supposedly will not run with 8 GB's of RAM without the newest 1.0.18 BIOS and the setup screen said it was running BIOS 1.0.15 which can't run 8 GB's. Yet this computer came from a set of office computers running this way I think. Will the BIOS revert to the earlier 1.0.15 when no power is to the motherboard? But it DID POST a couple times though with 1.0.15. Maybe, I'll try plugging my 750 watt power supply from my XPS 8300 into the Inspiron's motherboard like you plugged that PSU into your motherboard.

Those Dells are very particular. You can put one in the closet for 6 months and it will do that. Pull out the cmos battery and then replace and there you go. Or even unplugging everything from the power and bleeding the capacitors by holding down the power button. Plug everything back in and Bob's your uncle. Very strange.

When you removed the ram and then reset them in the board the bios needed to reset to successfully populate them and register them. Hopefully when you cleaned the heat sink you removed the ram again and cleaned the board connections or this problem will return. another board that has this problem is the gigabit boards.usually starting with ram being corrupt or damaged.

I'm hopeful you will get this message. I enjoyed your process for hunting down the issue with the Dell 220 and wondered if something similar could be the issue with my Dell / Alienware Aurora desktop. At first it was power cycling and I removed and replaced all cables and hardware. Now it no longer power cycles, just appears to run but doesn't display or post beep. I've tried another video card also and different HDDs

Interesting... the first mosfets should be the inrush limiter near the DC jack, you mean there's only 2v coming out from that point onwards? That implies a problem with the main power rail (VIN) but if that were the case, I'm not sure how you have a charge light. Unless the light is on but the battery isn't actually charging because 2v 🤔

sorry to post on an old video, clearly im drunk watching you work LOL, so does that mean the cmos battery is dying, the motherboard is dying or something just corrupted the current bios settings? im a tech as well, so its nice to be able to say exactly what the issue is and how to prevent it to the client. I think the board is going personally. those caps dont last very long.

You may have solved one of my problems. I`ll have to give the old thing a try. One would think they should replace the battery every fifteen years. Is that the reason my bios isn`t working properly?

    • @darrelpetrie8793
      @darrelpetrie8793 6 ปีที่แล้ว

That`s nice to know. I`ll try that first. It`s an old dell 260sff. If I can get it working it will be a give away. Unless it will handle a duel core upgrade.

Well that worked..It`s up and running. It didn`t detect the hard drive on boot. I booted through the usb with the linux I was trying to install to begin with when it started acting up. Once installed it`s running very slow due to an outdated integrated graphics card. I have searched high and low for the correct upgrade graphics card. Every search showed cards that didn`t match the slots. dell gx260 mini tower. sff. It doesn`t have the hinge on the front the plate is fixed and the usb exposed.

    How to fix a dell...
Step 1. Throw it in the bin.
Step 2. Don't buy a Dell ever again...
