    My $.02 worth. When you're discarding the old housing as junk, save the oil filter cup itself. I once cracked one, and Uber'd to the dealer, and he didn't have one in stock. They're expensive. And he was good enough to "borrow" one from a new oil filter housing, and sell me that and order a replacement for his inventory. But you never know when the that filter holder may crack, get overtightened, etc. I'm keeping my old one. In the process of doing this job on an '06 GLI. I probably shouldn't have let so much crud get into the block when cleaning up the mating surface, but lets hope one quick oil change can make that some better. Good video, I'm almost starting to go back together with it, but I'm one of those guys puzzling about how to remove the dipstick tube

    After needing to do this twice because I got just the gaskets and coolant leaked into the oil...I was able to remove the housing the second time in less than 2 hours and didn't need to remove the throttle body. I removed a few extra torx screws and hoses and was easily accessible from either the top or bottom of the car. I took the bottom oil cooler bolts from underneath and the rest from up top. then I just worked the oFH down from underneath.

  • @asherkimball8349
    @asherkimball8349 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Just did this, was brutal. Both the shallow triple squares on the metal bracket rounded out and I had to torque the housing behind the bracket one degree at a time with an ity bity ratchet completely blind😅 but we did it! To any who attempt this, be careful with the bracket bolts and invest in hose clamp pliers!

    • @fcpeuro

      Super frustrating when a bolt or two multiplies the complexity/frustration/time to do a job... glad you got it done in the end though and perservered!

  • @adhizzle9985

    The oil housing bolt torque of 15nm is correct, but oil pressure sensor torque is 20nm and oil cooler bolts are 25nm. Although 25nm seems rather tight..I think 20nm might be better on the safe side. I am reading the official manual from VW US and these are the specs shown. Just torqued them down a few hours earlier as I I performed this housing swap as well. If anyone needs the official manual just ask, its about 7,000+ pages in total. Has everything from basic maintenance to engine disassembly.

    Fantastic video! We are attempting this repair today as our filter housing cracked all the way when trying to remove the oil filter cap. It was basically melted together with the housing and there was no way to remove it, other than destroying it. Unfortunately this also resulted in a cracked housing, as I didn't realize this was a plastic piece and not aluminum as it is with most others cars.

    Great how to video. Super helpful. One thing though. Regarding (bending that bracket). That small triple square bolt isn’t what’s holding it down. It’s the upper oil cooler bolts that hold it down. The left one is accessible with just a 6mm Allen socket. The right one can be removed with a long 6mm Allen socket. No bending of bracket required. I’m really surprised it’s not covered in any other diy I’ve come across. It’s literally unaddressed or omitted. Also as far as taking the fans out…it does give you more room but take care not to damage the radiator core. So s suck to have to also replace a radiator.

    I did this on audi A4 quattro b7 few weeks ago. I didnt remove oil cooler hose as the hose was welded into the cooler lol and I just let it hang there with the hose. Used razor blade, brake clean and scotch brite to clean it. Used brake clean, shop towels and razor blade to clean the block where oil filter housing goes. Dont used oil or grease to lubricate the gaskets btw. While you are in there replace the dipstick tube oring( guy in this video replaced the dipstick tube but forgot the oring on metal pipe lol). Throttle body gasket replacement in not need as it never soaked in oil and mine was quite in great shape after 185k miles and re used it. Its also good time to replace Thermostat and oring on the metal pipe that goes into thermostat if it wasnt replaced. Thermostats are failure items on Audi's and VW.

We’re all included in the total. My question is a couple months later we got a powertrain system code that came up yet again for secondary air injection system incorrect flow detected is that area anywhere near the area they just worked on that cost us $1100?

    Hi Nathan. First of all, thanks for the detailed video. I spent $1200 today on an Oil Filter Housing, Oil Cooler, Oil and Oil filter and some gaskets replacement. When I asked to see the old parts all they showed me was the gaskets and the oil filter and came up with some (to me) lame excuse why they couldn't show me the Housing and Cooler saying they had to be taken for testing to a third-party expert and because the parts were damaged, they left them there. My question is, I know you had to remove some parts to get to the other ones, but how difficult would be for me to see if they actually replaced those parts? If I get under my car, will I be able to see them? I have a Golf Mk6. Thanks!

    Originally had just the OFH gasket replaced, but soon it started to leak again. Did the recommended OFH unit replacement and followed all the recommendations of this video and I still have a leak coming from the newly installed OFH. I took it apart and examined the OFH & gaskets - they were fine. Reinstalled the damn thing and made sure all gaskets in place, oriented / seated ( with no preexisting gasket residue) correctly and I tightened all the bolts and OF cap to Neuton Meter specs and I still have a major oil leak. It's too tight to observe leak and determine where pressure is allowiing oil to leak out. Don't want to have to take VW to those dealership pirates to charge me $$$ to install an overpriced OEM OFH... can I just put some sort of seal around the outside of the plastic OFH where it meets the engine block?

I would recommend a very small ratchet for the top oil filter housing bolts or one of those universal joint drivers to get at the bolts from an angle. Getting the housing out is a little trickery to but not to bad, you can flex the bracket up a little to do so.
