  • How to inspect and replace a FSI HPFP and Cam Follower on a MK5 GTI. The high pressure fuel pump and cam follower is a common MK5 FSI failure. Checking the cam follower is basically maintenance. Also failure can cause check engine light codes P0087, P1093, P2293. Today I will show you step by step how to DIY the FSI fuel pump and cam follower. Thanks to FCP EURO and Meyle for sponsoring the MK5 Rusto-Mod project.

Checking and replacing the follower and replacing the timing belt were the first things I did when I bought my 8P S3, just a no brainer and peace of mind 👍

HumbleMechanic did you consider doing the stud conversion? I also had to replace the rubber hose. It had degraded on the inside over time and was causing the car to go into limp mode under load..

Thankfully these high pressure fuel systems are not as complex as some others. Key word is maintenance as usual. Charles, you are the man when it comes to these repairs. Thank you.

Manuel RVS Yup. Especially the earlier FSI 2.0T in my opinion. We have a 2008 Passat and we just absolutely love that car and I have done just basic maintenance and small issue repairs over the course of its life. I do my own belt changes, metal impeller water pump, reseal vacuum pump, check follower once a while and some upgraded ignition parts and it purrs like a kitten. It’s 11 years old at this point and I am planning on keeping it for at least another 5-7 years because no one even offers a good wagon hardly anymore that is affordable and fun to drive. Perhaps a Mercedes wagon next. And I will never buy a Subaru wagon, sorry Subaru.

That exact sensor has failed on my Mk5 GTI in the winter of 2016. After a search on eBay I found out that I had, as mentioned in the video, the old revision, with E, and I ordered the one with K from America, because somehow, no ebay vendors here in Europe had the part. Took 2 weeks to get here, but my engine ran again.

Previous owners had somewhat neglected follower changes on our EOS BPY engine, and there is a new (ish) fuel pump on the engine, but the follower of the same vintage is starting to show some wear and the cam surface shows some wear also. How much wear on the cam fuel pump lobes will fall in the "worn, but acceptable to still operate" zone with follower inspections with each oil change? Based on the pictures of damaged cams I have seen, this appears to be somewhere in the marginally operational (vs obviously fubar) zone.

Is there anyway to replace the fuel pressure regulator sensor on the pump or does it come as 1 unit?

Hi charles, I need to replace my hpfp as the bottom hard line brass fitting is damaged and I don’t think you buy it separately. The problem is all the hpfps I can find have the newer style bamboo fitting and not the older banjo bolt like mine. Can you swap this part over from the old pump to make it work? I don’t honestly know what to do to get it working again. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Your channel is awesome

hey man. I'm getting these codes on my MK5 GTI 2.0T DSG STOCK BWA. Engine light is on so scanned and came up with 2 pending codes: P0171 System too Lean Bank 1 and P0441 EVAP System incorrect purge flow.. My car seems to be revving itself on idle slightly, especially in neutral. I'm thinking change the pcv valve and cam follower and do a change of spark plugs. Already done the oil change. My GTI also been drinking 1L oil every month..

Check the plastic "T" fitting with the check valve near the driver side of the intake manifold. That is a common breaking part.

Just replaced my cam follower… it was trashed!! A hole so large it was working it’s way through the sides of the follower and also wore big grooves in the cam lobe as well! 😣

I need help! I have a 07 GTI Fahrenheit. I get sputtering when accelerating hard in a high gear and lower rpms. This happened after I have replaced the spark plugs. I have now replaced the low pressure fuel pump, high pressure, fuel filter and cam follower. I still get the sputtering but is less than before. I didn’t replace the thrust sensor. Is that what I need to do to fix? Please help!!!

Hey, man, I got a problem with my car. my vehicle is an Octavia with a 1.6 FSI engine. I drive down the road in my car and he cuts off the gas. the gas needle surges and the engine stops. the computer shows error code p2293. Service officials say the problem was caused by a high pressure pump. however, since the problem is not always experienced, I think there may be a problem with some other equipment. I care about your ideas, and I await your answer.

    Humble,
I have this same motor and it is clattering like it has a cam chain flopping around in the housing . I have read it is common to make clatter under a few different parts failing. I just watched this video and pulled the follower it looks very clean and well kept I was wondering what else could be making this noise on this type of motor I am not really interested in chasing parts and replacing them if i can find an experienced vet to help in the diagnosis process

Sounds like it's a faulty timing chain tensioner on the back or right side of the engine. The tensioner is known to fail and cause a rattling noise, with catastrophic engine failure if not fixed in time.

    Awesome video Charles.
I need to replace the Thrust sensor only as the black little nipple on the sensor broke off. Do I still need to relieve the fuel pressure or is it just a take off and put back on type deal ?
    Cheers

Yep, you will still get HP fuel out of the thrust sensor

If there was no pressure left in the system, and the cam follower smells like gas, should I replace the HPFP?

  • @steveweyerts
    @steveweyerts 4 ปีที่แล้ว

So I just had a HPFP put on in a shop that claims German repair. 2007 vw 3.6 4motion awd. New Hitachi fuel pump.
Does it need a new sensor as you did in this video? They say they tested pressure on both sides and it is the same
and that the new pump must be bad? HELP!
