Hi Andrew. My Mk8 GTI is coming up for 3 years old soon. I'll be requesting the Gearbox oil and filter change together with the Engine oil/filter. Some may disagree and question but for me, new oil= longer life for the components.
On my 5spd mk6 tdi I have changed trans fluid around 3 year intervals. I can feel a difference when I change it after that long. All gearbox fluids get sticky after a while, usually well before their service life expires. When you keep ahead of that they always run great.
I've probably driven several 1.9 TDIs with manual gearboxes which probably never had their oil changed and had covered 350-500k km.. So yeah, with normal driving - it should probably never be needed.
No but front callipers looking likely as they clank when smacked with palm. Pads aren’t sprung correctly in calliper so it moves a bit. Hope it’s this, waiting to upgrade brakes before I attend to it
@@volkswizard my 16Golf GTI goes in for its service on Friday hoping they can pin down the grumbling from passengers side, I’m sure it’s the tops mount, I’ve checked everything else. Hopefully it’ll be covered under the VW warranty or the MOT insurance 🤞🏻
Hi Andrew! Thanks a lot for all the info you shared. Could you please tell me how much gear oil should be filled in 2015 2nd Gen Jetta TDI 2.0 MT and how to know when it is filled up to the mark. My car uses the same MQ350 gearbox. Should I fill precisely 2.3 litres?
Hi, i have VW Polo MK5 1.8cc TSI GTI 2015y 141kw 191hp, engine code is DAJA. Current mileage is 240000km, everything works fine, gearbox oil has never been changed, and the gearbox is DSG 7 speed DQ200 dry cluch. Should i change the gearbox oil or not becouse many people told my in this type of gearbox it is not necesery to change. please help, sorry for my english
Hello mate, great video I throughly enjoyed watching it. I have a 2018 MK7.5 Golf 1.0 TSI SE, and just today the car wouldn’t engage into reverse (only has 51k miles). The gearbox is not faulty at all (all other gears worked fine) and I get it serviced every year at a VW main dealer. Read up somewhere that putting it through first and second continuously would do the trick, and after doing that for some while reverse was working again. My question is, any idea as to why? Is it to do with the gearbox oil or a cable of some sort?
Eibach Eibach Eibach all day long Really comfortable has the looks Fitted to all my cars edition 30 edition 35 golf gti performance golf r audi s3 etc Please you wont be disappointed Tim
Hi mate. I used synthetic 75w90 synthetic gl4+ another synthetic additive on my Audi A1 2012 1.4 tfsi manual 6 speed gear box. The original gear oil is too expensive in my opinion. Do you think it’s gonna be bad for my gear box? Thanks for your information
Great job Adrew, this job is so overlooked. Plus as cars get older changed hands who knows what oil some garages have used. The difference in gear change can be night and day. 👍
Great video, going to change the gearbox oil in my manual 7R at next service. Does the CSS come with no underbonnet sound deadening from factory or have you removed it?
I did mention that but cut it out - I put it under the bolt head that goes through rear wishbone bush into subframe. Might be different on others as CSS has alloy subframe.
I will do a Gearbox Oil change on my Octavia RS this Weekend. Thanks to this Vid I know what to look out for. @volkswizard many thanks for making the effort of this vid, it helps a lot!
VW state replace fill plug and not drain, the kit from Deutscheparts includes both - if you are going to replace one then do both. Didn't realise this until too late though still think it's weird replacing fill plug when drain is the one that could leak and empty gearbox. VW's logic must be if the fill plug seizes in then you are in trouble but I do wonder if it's a way of extracing more £ from punter. These plugs don't have integral rubber o-rings like some I've seen.
Thanks I see the logic and may get it done next year when my 2019 Octavia VRS hits 50k. Sound quality is great and thanks for this How To Do video as very interesting
Mine was at 210 K when I did change the manual fluid for the first time, luckily It’s running greatly better now than but since I didn’t have OE fluid I used oil from company tobe called “ ROWE😂”, exactly it’s ROWE fully synthetic 75W-80 S FE GL-4 but it’s also rating a bit of gl-5 “. For manual transmission 6 speed TT 225 And I used ROWE ATF 9000 for my R53 MCSA too at 111 K I was a bit surprised because it’s smooth sailing on both by far Honestly --- we don’t find yet any use of ROWE on TH-cam 😂---
Hi Andrew any chance of you doing a video on changing gearbox oil on a DSG 7 speed golf or similar, as I’d quite like to see this done with the filter change Thanks
I notice on owners groups and forums theres always that one person who chimes in when someone asks about servicing a "lifetime" fluid, that will put in their own anecdotal evidence and some wank about the engineers at xyz car brand know best, which i suspect is purely so they feel better about not doing it or getting it done on their own car.
Thanks John! Well it's still here so that's good. I'm going to sell the Corrado which means I can garage the Mk2 and that means it's worth getting the paint done and basically getting the project going so stay tuned!
Great episode really interesting to see you change this gearbox oil I’m always learning from you thank you :) Can I ask you a question, I have a Golf R32 mk5 completely stock 78,000 on the clock and when do you know the brake disc Need changing and what would put on this model in your years of experience. Should I go to VW OEM ? Thank you so much
The discs either display corrosion which doesn’t come off with use (usually worse on inner face) or they form a lip on the edge of their faces where the pad doesn’t touch. Carefully with cold brakes run your finger along disc face from inside to outside and see if lip there. If more than 2mm approx then change them - there is a minimum width for discs often stamped on bell area. Pagid are ok but Zimmerman is better quality and I think Deutscheparts have just started importing them. Genuine won’t be any better and should cost a lot more
It is not in manufacturer's interests for items to last much beyond the 2nd or 3rd owner/user, it is in their interests to artificially lower the running costs and accelerate wear and failure beyond 10 years. They'll make more money this way and it'll be way out of warranty by then.
Hi Andrew, here i am locked out of reverse on my 2015 gti three pedal with 86 thousand miles and cursing myself through gritted teeth cause I've never done this!
I imagine the facelift mk8 GTI's will get manual swapped, surely there will be transmissions for the job, something from Skoda or Cupra for a budget conversion maybe even parts from the TDI cars.
Andrew, what about changing the diff oil? As its in close proximity to the gearbox and everything removed for access, is there a reason for not doing it the same time? Silly me I didnt see your previous video

Noel from Deutscheparts here, we can supply all that for you

Did you ever get to the source of the front suspension noise?
No but front callipers looking likely as they clank when smacked with palm. Pads aren’t sprung correctly in calliper so it moves a bit. Hope it’s this, waiting to upgrade brakes before I attend to it

Interestingly enough, just recently my local dealer has started pushing for people to get their transmission gear oil changed.
Probably to make up for 5 year cambelt rule being wound up

Enjoyed the video. Audio was spot on 👍
Good and very good 😊
Excellent video, didn't think to do the airbox removal, that way I don't have to mess with getting it level on rhino ramps.
Can I change the oil in the FAQ diff, in my 2015 Leon Cupra?

Does this oil change do the diff oil as well? Mines a cupra 290
Is it the same on the CDLB MK2 TTS?

What about 4 Motion gearboxes? Are there any differences in this process (front differential shares gear oil doesn’t it)?
I have a vw tiguan 4motion. Front differential or bevel box doesn't share same oil with manual gearbox

Not bad but it is the wrong oil, these take straight 75w gl4 not 75w90

Audio is much better 👌🏽 no high pitch screeching this time

Well said David, thanks!

Does the CSS come with no underbonnet sound deadening from factory or have you removed it?
My 2017 Skoda Octavia VRs petrol doesn't come with sound deadening from the factory but the VRs diesel does.
Do you recommend to put additives in the gearoil?
No because a good gear oil has them already
Exactly where have you placed the stand please Andrew? Thanks.

I always thought the shifter quality a let down in the Mk7. The golf ball shifter looks good and feels ok but is too plasticky and lightweight.
