This video is beautifully edited and your commentary is hilarious. As someone that had to ride home with no clutch after a cable snap earlier today I appreciate your preparedness as well.
If not earlier, you are now my hero..! I mean, how many of us would have survived a snapped clutch cable? I sure wouldn't..! I clenched my teeth until I saw the end of the cable coming out of the top end of that tube. Every time you dropped that spanner, I said to myself "Ok, he's doomed now!"; it was like watching a thriller movie for the first time.
Back in the good old days ( when my bikes had cable clutches ) this also happened to me ... but i made sure that it only happened ONCE ... I then always had a NEW, SPARE CABLE "tie wrapped" to the one that was 'in use'. And a small poly bag covering each "greased up" end. So, if your cable does go "SNAP", all you have to do is unhook both ends of the broken cable and hook up the new one. Hey presto, back on the road again in about 5 minutes. ( Just remember to replaced the knackered one with another NEW ONE ! ! ! )
I've done that in the past too. This is the first touring trip without and BANG, snapped cable! The universe hates me. That or my servicing schedule hates me.
Your premature snappage is something I had never considered so seconds after watching your new cable was installed I was inspired to purchase off Fleabay an Oxford emergency cable kit. You have inadvertently saved my bacon before my bacon has needed saving! A decent toolroll and said kit will now reside snugly under the seat of my FZ6 permanently now. Saved my life AMC 😊
I’ve only just found this - I’ll let the reader guess why. The most astonishing thing I have found from watching is how the feck you remained so calm when doing it! My own experience included: tearing three gloves…tearing the skin on two fingers and the back of my hand…breaking my leatherman…using every expletive I know (and some I made up on the spot!)…threatening to sell the bike……threatening to abandon the bike….threatening to set the bike on fire…..crying…begging…..and then, what felt like two days later but what was in fact just shy of an hour and a half, riding off into the sunset on my loyal, trusty and favourite steed with a smile and a “job well done” swagger. P.S. my hand got infected……antibiotics should also come with the kit………
Ouch. Sorry to hear of the suffering but glad you finally rode into the sunset! What can i say, I’m angry all the rest of the time, but when I’m around bikes, all calm! 😎
Love your trouble how to videos, because they actually demonstrate how things really happens. Hate those how to's where they do everything perfect and edit out all the tricky parts and possible issues you may have. By the way I had to replace my clutch cable and I just ask my local Costa Rican Kawasaki to order a new one from USA, it was $35 and it came with the cable cover and all the parts, just remove and replace.
Cheers mate! Glad to hear that there's a place for the honest accounts of how it all DIDN'T go to plan! I ordered a used on when I got back. Did 5000km on a mk3 Versys and was like new for just 20€ SCORE!
Thank you sir! You prepared me well to do this job myself which worked out great! Your commentary is intertaining as well. I've now given more thought to my riding emergency kit
My pleasure! Very happy to hear it. Always gotta have one of these handy. Although now i have a hydraulic clutch and throttle by wire, I’m going to have an empty space in my toolkit!
You know you're maturing when you repair a clutch cable on the roadside without cussing the cable, Kawasaki, the tourist behind you, your dad for the spanking you received 25 yrs ago and the price of milk.
lol. I'm getting there. I still curse Mao for my 44CCP scooter every time it strands me. Like last night. Two days after the previous calamity. I forgot my 9mm wrench to adjust the tappets this time ( overheating. ) I need to get another kind of 9mm to put it out of it's misery. YT obviously can tell I'm searching online for a replacement throttle cable however with this video recommendation. I did purloin one from an abandoned scooter to keep rolling. lol.
I'd hate having to do this at home and there you manage it on the road. I'm really impressed. This is going to be useful for the 3 days trip in Cornwall I'll do this summer.
Aggravated slow mo is clearly the best. If only I was ninja enough to catch some stuff for slow mo super rescue action. Must watch more Superhero movies.
Getting caught up on some of your videos, Andy. Versys owner here in the States. This was a very helpful episode. That cable kit is a must have on any upcoming trips I make. I learned a lot. Really enjoying the countryside shots in Bavaria as well. The wife has an opportunity to get a job in Germany after she gets her PhD, so we're seriously thinking of moving there. Who knows for how long. The prospect of riding in some of these same areas gives me goosebumps. We don't get those kinds of views is boring, flat Nebraska. Anyway, back to your adventures! Really enjoying this Euro series. Cheers.
That was pure Andy Man Cam genius. I would not like to be in that situation. You handled it like a boss. I'm going to have to re-appraise what I carry around with me when I go out riding. Especially on trans-continental rides. Because there's one coming up in the not too distant future.
Cheers mate. I'm glad it at least appeared like I was calm and in control!! I think this kit is a must have. Especially as you're covered for throttle cables too. I might do the parallel clutch cable thingy for the next trip though! I could have saved 2 hours if I'd done it this time.
My Bike was stranded at a friend's & my local supplier was taking their sweeet time with the cable so i Ordered the kit & it'll ship in 2 days! Excited to get my bike home!
It’s probably best that you bought a proper cable. This is really intended as a get you home fix. I left it on for a few months, but the nipple did start to chew the cable after a while.
Fantastic video, off on a Euro trip in a few weeks and went on Amazon and bought one. Last year we were delayed a day as my mates cable broke and we had to get a pickup truck to take the bike to be repaired, this would have saved us the expense. You should ask for commission.
Thoroughly enjoyed your video. The biggest thing I came away with was the repair kit with the various size cable ends.😃😃 I have an 03 Yamaha XVS 1100 and in replacing the throttle cables, one of the stock “ends” is too big to fit thru the handlebar housing. After trying to trim it down with my Drexel, still didn’t fit. I went to Amazon, ordered some ends but even the smallest look too big. That kit looks perfect! Thanks!
I had this happen today on my FZ1 despite lubing that cable generously at minimum twice a year, I used the same kit and it got me back I was so happy. It was sketch AF riding through London traffic knowing there's a slight chance the cable might come undone lol I've packed a pair of gloves for the future now since my hands were minging after the repair :(
I've been watching your videos lately and I must say you are very good storyteller. Very interesting indeed. Special when you wishing for imaginery assistant
Having watched the early release last week, I completely forgot to bring up my recent replacement. I don't envy you doing it in a random parking lot. Also, crazy to see my name in the credits, proud even.
I think a garage situation would have been far more convenient! But then in the shadow of a medieval tower and in the sunshine made it ok! Credit well deserved mate. Thank you for the help!
Some Enduro riders tie a new cable next to the existing one , then just connect the ends voila. Andy my booster plug is on the way after your recommendation.
I did that on the Fazer last time round, but not this time for some reason. Good thing with the kit was I was covered for clutch and throttle cables. But I'll have a spare pre-routed next time!
Well that went better than I thought actually . After the big cliffhanger I pictured something a bit more dramatic . Possibly you finding your way into a seedy looking local fix it shop where an awful Pulp Fiction " Gimp " type scenario takes place . So thank your lucky stars for that cable repair kit Andy ! Maybe drop the company that makes those a lovely note :-)
It's OK. I do the same. Except it's always a vicious cycle. I expect the worst, but quietly kid myself that the best MIGHT happen. Which means I tell myself that I'm preparing for disappointment, except the quiet hope means I'm half lying to myself so when the worst happens, I'm still distraught! I'm hedging my bets in the wrong direction! Of course when it works out, I'm over the moon. It's happened twice.
I'm becoming expert at not throwing a wobbly. Most patient biker on the planet now! Honestly no wobbly in this one. How could I? The overriding fact was that I was still on holiday and it was all part of the adventure! If I'd been on my way to work, different story!
@@AndyManCam Yep, also ordered a new Leatherman. Well, not the genuine Leatherman as they're so bloody expensive. I ordered a ' Leatherman like ' tool at about a 1/4 of the cost. Hope I don't regret it!!
I got one of those once... I’ve got two leathermans now! 😂 Though i needed to use mine at work and haven’t found any to be nearly as reliable and take as much stick as leatherman!
Nice video 👍 I don't pay for tv so I'm not paying for vimeo. If you take you Spair cables and put a little solder on the end just enuff to hold the strands of cable and make a nice rounded end should feed easy. It sucks when this stuff happens but look at the up side. You where prepared and it wasn't raining. From one rider to another ride on stay safe.
You complain about the sun coming out and you're hot, but yet you keep your sweatshirt on? And you also did that repair without taking our helmet off? What a tool.
Thanks for your input David. Your empathy knows no bounds. Sadly your observation skills are somewhat lacking. The camera is mounted to the helmet, along with the microphone. No helmet, no video OR audio. If hate to think what gracious things you’d have to say if I’d just posted a black screen with a written description of what came to pass on that fateful day. As for the sweatshirt, I was running to a tight deadline and had people to meet. The effort and time to take off the helmet, unplug the aforementioned microphone and remove the sweatshirt, would have cost me vital minutes. Better to sweat a bit, moan about it and still be on time.
Terribly sorry, your Grace. I guess there’s a limit to how funny you can make a clutch cable replacement. Maybe I’ll wear some comedy ears and use honka-honka sound effects next time.
Cheers!! So very right!! I reckon you're not a real rider until you've had to stop for a calming coffee while contemplating how the HELL you're going to rescue your trip!!
OMG! What is it with Kawi clutch cables? My KZ550’s clutch cable snapped so many times (always at the lever) I took to keeping a spare on hand at all times.
Don't underestimate that, I instantly checked my bike, what possibilities I would have. So I can get prepared when going on a longer trip. So I can do some fixation till I find a dealer.
That's the best thing you can do. If it's all 100% before you go, then much less likely something will break. I was under pressure because of the boosterplug fitting, new tyres, gear indicator, brake pads etc.. So I didn't check the clutch cable properly. So all my fault!! Fingers crossed you have no trouble mate!
Hidy high, Andy my man. I replaced the clutch cable on the versys today. Faff does not begin to describe the arduous load of shit to get a new cable in. If you follow the Kawasaki service manual, i.e. first attach the cable on top at the lever, then by magic try to get that little stubby knob into the holder at the bottom with the clutch under tension. Ha fucking ha. It does not really work. Part two in next week's installment when I redo it to properly seat the cable at the bottom while swearing profusely. Also, the old cable was so gummed up with a combination of old grease and the bike sitting at the dealer's in the sun for three years before I bought it, that it made me think that it's very very likely to be the case with just about all the lubricated parts of the bike, i.e. engine, crank, forks, wheel bearings, head stock bearing etc. I think I'll have to rent a garage this christmas and strip and rebuild the bike. What fun.
6 hours later... :-p Nicely done though mate. Thanks for filming it as I've never thought about taking spare cables with me on tour before. But then, I own a Suzuki which are much more reliable! :-p I was a bit turned on by the rubber gloves and all that lube and insertion though. Oh my, I've gone red now.
Smart emergencykit! Kinda cheating to use a new cable ;) I would have had to shift gears without clutching (only shfit when speed of engine and tranny are equal) or do a makeshift footclutch. Nice bike
I waisted around 3 hours, first attempt was good if was on the road, almost 0 free play, 2nd attempt, too much slack and itwouldn't disengage. I already ordered a brand new cable!
Haha! That’s not a great success story!! It’s a bombproof safety net to have when you just run the spare cable alongside the current one. Then if it breaks, just swap the ends over and carry on.

This is exactly what i needed. got a similar emergency repair kit that im going to use once i manage to get off work when its not pitch black outside. for some reason i dont like working with tiny nipples, lubricant and sexy gloves in pitch black, i'm so very very afraid of them nipples just getting completely lost.
In order to get to the end of my clutch cable, I have to take off the side plastics, seat and remove the fuel tank. Looks like I'm going to have to invest in a small traveling tool kit, as well as a spare cable!
Time to rebrand yourself as HandyManCam, a travelling bike repair specialist for all your emergency bike needs. **smallprint: liable to get lost and/or cause spontaneous downpours**
TBH I never really go over 130kmh (80mph). Over that is just uncomfortable in the wind, tiring and the fuel economy takes such a dive that I don't gain anything because I have to stop more often for fuel. Pretty boring I know! Sorry! I do blarst up to 160kmh every now and then, but only for shitz and giggles as it's exhausting.
@@AndyManCam thanks, I bought the kit because I thought I needed to make a longer cable but turned out I didn't.. only needed to reroute it.. anyway, good to have the kit in case of emergency like yours.. would suck to get stuck because of a stupid cable.
After watching this video a couple of years ago I bought a repair kit and it’s ready saved the day on the wife’s bike
I'm very happy to hear that Carl! I've still always got one with me, but thankfully haven't needed it since this trip!
i needed one today and i had none :c

The tip should have a bit of solder on it to keep it from fraying since you have to cut it to length anyway.

Better to sweat a bit, moan about it and still be on time.
hey andyman, the clutch cable of honda hornet 2010 (cb600f) fits perfectly on versys!!!
That's VERY good to know!! Thanks!
well done on the roadside repair! :-)
+Hippo-Drones Thanks! So relieved that it came together!
got to have a Leatherman, great vid..lol
Agreed! It's always in the bins! Cheers!
A touch of comedy & sarcasm but not enuf to stay interested to watch till the end.
Terribly sorry, your Grace. I guess there’s a limit to how funny you can make a clutch cable replacement. Maybe I’ll wear some comedy ears and use honka-honka sound effects next time.
nice job man!
Cheers very much mate!
Well well, after that cliffhanger in pt 5 you are well prepared. Why I'm not surprised?
A good boy scout is always prepared!
That happened to mine too! It seems like an especially fragile system compared to other bikes, since then I also carry one of those kits
Absolutely. I think most Versys riders have had a clutch d´cable issue! Either stiffness or full on snappage. The kit is brilliant.
Good work mate! Been there, done that too... But it wouldn't be a interesting trip if these things didn't happen! ;)
Cheers!! So very right!! I reckon you're not a real rider until you've had to stop for a calming coffee while contemplating how the HELL you're going to rescue your trip!!
ah the joys of ride by wire and hydraulic clutches 😁😁
One day I'll be a growed up with all of that stuff!!
OMG! What is it with Kawi clutch cables? My KZ550’s clutch cable snapped so many times (always at the lever) I took to keeping a spare on hand at all times.
I must admit that I#ve only ever had cables snap on a kawasaki! Must be some kind of conspiracy!
booster plug fitted all good
+Garry Gibbons Awesome. Enjoy your 'new' bike!
Thanks for the lesson 😁
Less of a lesson, more of a documentation!! I think it could ALWAYS be done better than I do it!!
Thanks! And for the next tour through Europe I wish you better weather :)
What fun.
Oh wow. Yeah i remember the faff of fitting a new cable. Not fun! Sounds like you've got a very and lube filled winter ahead of you!
A lube a day keeps the squeeks away (she said).
Boom Boom! :D
Cable repair kit to hand? I call setup just for the views :-P
Good job though, very handy kit to have :-)
Dammit! You found me out! I've been pouring salty water over the clutch cable for months! Luckily my evil scheme worked out perfectly!
Ur a trooper mate.
+Geeth Perera Cheers mate. Had to fix it or bin the trip. And that was NO option!
Andy Man Cam
How long will last mate in between the repair and a brand new ??
I actually left it on for 6 months before I finally bothered to change it for a new one! Not bad for a €12 kit!!
Bloody oath mate. These cables are waaay too exxy. Good on ya. I ordered a kit too.
I don't think I'll ever leave my immediate vicinity without one again!
6 hours later... :-p
Nicely done though mate. Thanks for filming it as I've never thought about taking spare cables with me on tour before.
But then, I own a Suzuki which are much more reliable! :-p
I was a bit turned on by the rubber gloves and all that lube and insertion though. Oh my, I've gone red now.
Luckily only 2 hours later! Still too much though! Sorry about the sexual nature of the video. Or am I?...
thank you for this video i needed this
My pleasure! Thanks for watching!!
well done. and my friends make fun of my tool and spares roll
Cheers IM! Your tool roll is something I aspire to. One day...
Ichiban Moto give him 5 ichiban moto sticker sir
Man I was just about to say .."if you had some oil you could have put some on that cable before you drag it out...lol
Right there with you Bea!
Smart emergencykit! Kinda cheating to use a new cable ;) I would have had to shift gears without clutching (only shfit when speed of engine and tranny are equal) or do a makeshift footclutch.
Nice bike
Ha! The old cable would have been a challenge, seeing as how it snapped at the nipple! (Oo-er missus!)
Good one. You can never over lube.
It's so true, and in so many avenues of life.

+Skalhen I did drop my greasy nipples a disproportionate amount of times! Must have kit for any trip though.
Exactly what happened to me today on my vstrom... Didn't have a bloody kit tho 😂
Nightmare! Sorry to hear it mate. I never go on a trip without my kit anymore!
In order to get to the end of my clutch cable, I have to take off the side plastics, seat and remove the fuel tank.
Looks like I'm going to have to invest in a small traveling tool kit, as well as a spare cable!
It's always a snowball effect isn't it! One tool means you need another tool, but that tool doesn't work unless you've got the third tool...
@@AndyManCam The truth!! :)
The struggle is real!
Time to rebrand yourself as HandyManCam, a travelling bike repair specialist for all your emergency bike needs.
**smallprint: liable to get lost and/or cause spontaneous downpours**
Not a bad idea at all! Though the small print is sadly very necessary!
how fast you usually cruise on motorway? I mean if there is no limit :)
Looks like a surgery! cable implant?
Haha! Surgery, but with far more oil and swearing!! 😂
I appreciate the slow mo dropping. Good job repairing the fucker
I thought that the slow mo clumsiness would appeal to some! Who doesn't love a slow mo!
Either you edited out a lot of swearing or you have the patient of a saint. I was swearing like a sailor out of sympathy just watching this.
Or a combination of the two! 😜
Thanks
This video is hilarious!
Thanks very much. Happy to entertain during my emergencies! 😜
@@AndyManCam the slow-mo tool drops are the best 😂
Gotta create that drama where you can!
might have to get hooked up with some adult beverage and watch again!
Cheers! Enjoy!
155 like lol
well done m8 I'll be getting one of those kits just in case 😊😊
I can only recommend it! Saved my trip!
how long did that repair last you?
I eventually replaced the cable with a proper one just over 6 months later. Even then it wasn't necessary. I just wanted the peace of mind!
@@AndyManCam thanks, I bought the kit because I thought I needed to make a longer cable but turned out I didn't.. only needed to reroute it.. anyway, good to have the kit in case of emergency like yours.. would suck to get stuck because of a stupid cable.
Totally. I’ve always got it with me now.
What cause it to snap
Age, overuse and rust.
is that Jason Stateham?
Haha! His taller, less famous, (slightly) less bald double!
Rubber gloves, no tissues. Pfff...😊🏍💨 all the schizzel and kerfuffel. Convert to hydraulic? .... done that one.... next, chop chop 😎🍻🍻
I know! Half a job AMC! Hydraulic would be nice. I'll put it on the list with shaft drive!
Hope mine breaks now having watched that!
Hahaha! I hope yours doesn't break mate! Unless it's close to home or a nice Cafe!
Andy Man Cam
I've recently had new camera shafts on a brand new bike.....she's bomb proof now! lol
Nice! Nothing like newly fitted stuff!!
Andy Man Cam
oh yes! doesn't sound like a bag of spanners anymore
And you managed to edit out most of the swearing ha ha!
You may not believe this Tony, but there was almost NO swearing! I was in holiday mode, and no phone based satnav involved!
